    Pro-tip: put your phone, wallet, keys, pocket stuff, etc in your personal item before you even get in line. That way you have less to put in the bin and less chance of forgetting it all as well.

      @@LincolnClay98 I put my phone and wallet in my carryon. Anything larger than a phone (tablet, laptop, shoes and jacket) goes into a bin. An exception would be your phone and laptop chargers. These go in the carryon.

    I once believed I was a savvy traveler and wore no metal at check in; my belt, glasses, rings etc were removed before lining up. Four times I did this, did not set off the detector and four times I was pulled aside and put into the scanner. I now intentionally wear a ring, set off the detector, get told to remove my ring and then continue through promptly. So much for trying to help security do their jobs! Haha!

      I once was on a Ryanair plane and they checked everyone for drugs (Germany to England(so drugs are illegal in both countries)). They led everyone into separate rooms where your carry on, clothes, and your body got swiped and checked in front of you. I once heard that you find traces of drugs every where so I was curious if they found a little hint of drugs on mine due to what I've heard. She got annoyed (probably thought I might want to do with stupid) or maybe it was a long day.. I'm still curious if they found sth (never did drugs apart from alcohol)

    Tip - Before entering the security area why not go ahead and place your belt, your wallet, coins, keys, sunglasses, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, jackets, etc in your carry-on bag (make sure to leave a bit of space to do so). Then all you have to do is remove your shoes and place those in the tray with your boarding pass and passport (and the clear bag with liquids if you have one), place the carry-on on the conveyor belt (and laptop if traveling with one) and simply pass through the scanner. Once passed the scanner all you need to do is slip on your shoes, grab your carry-on, boarding pass, passport and clear bag and off you go. If shoes have laces then tuck the laces into the shoe, slip them on and walk to the nearest bench, or space where you can take more time to tie your laces and put on your belt, jacket etc without any pressure. Your personal items will be safe inside the carry-on and it will save you the hassle of putting all those items into the tray and then having to quickly collect them after. Oh, and a good idea is to wear some cheap, dollarstore socks or disposable sanitary socks over your good socks that you can walk around on the dirty floor with and then dispose of once past security.

    To precheck or not to precheck? I think I travel enough. This year, I’ve gone internationally 3 times and domestically 4 times. I’ve done this for several years now and until this last trip, did not have TSA precheck. What made me do it? I found out that my United credit card would actually refund my $100. Before that, I did not care to have precheck. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don’t. I just go to the airport early. What’s more important is to know how to pack and what to remove to go through the lines easier not necessarily faster. Remember, you have to wait for that plane anyway and unless you want to live on the wild side, you want to give yourself enough time to be at the airport to walk, not run to the gate. As for global entry, it only works in the US. The lines in Asia and Europe are longer. Many of the US ports of entry now have kiosks that make going through immigration hassle free. After a long flight, I head straight for a lavatory. I wash my face, brush my teeth, do some sprucing up and the lines are a bit shorter by then. If they are not, then at least I feel more human. Lastly, even if you rush to get through that immigration checkpoint, you may have to wait for your luggage if you check it in. Moral of the story, give yourself ample time to go through security (in Europe and Asia, that could mean 3 hours instead of 2) and once at your destination, take your time. Rome was not built in a day.

    OK Jess, I'm going to have to step in here! Years ago you showed us/me a bag that has hands down drastically improved my experience at checkpoint! I mean, before I bought it, I had visions of people beating me over the head with checkpoint bins because I was soooo unorganized and had so many bins! LOL! So I kinda thought it was weird that you didn't mention Eagle Creek's checkpoint friendly bags! You know, the ones with one zipper along the sides that allow you to open it so that you can open it flat on the conveyor belt instead of taking all of your electonics out? I got the Eagle Creek knapsack (I bought it so long ago that I can't even remember the name of it) but I also remember there was a Convertabrief bag that did the same thing and both will open up flat so that there's no need to take out the laptop, ipad or phone! Sometimes I can even put my liquids on the very top of it in between the laptop and the iPad/phone section and let it sail right through! That means one carry-on filled with packing cubes (with a telescope handle), one checkpoint friendly shoulder bag (that opens up flat) which then leaves the need for only 1 bin! Zippppand I'm through! And I know that I sound like a commercial but I couldn't help it! If there was any place to bring up those Eagle Creek checkpoint friendly bags it was this one! As always, thanks for the tips!

      Hi Midnight Colors! To answer your question, no, jewelry doesn't have to be in a separate bag. And TSA isn't requiring you to remove jewelry or pack it one way or another anymore. That said, finding a good jewelry organizer is so helpful. (I personally hate untangling necklaces ever... especially on the road.)

      In regard to if an iPad needs it's own tray... I think so, but to be honest haven't personally given it a go recently. I'd suggest placing it in it's own tray just in case... unless other travelers (reading this) have more updated info than me! Either way, let us know what you find out on your trip. We love sharing the latest and greatest travel tips with each other. 🙂

      I took a flight last year and yeah didn't have to do most of that. I had on a heavy sweater because it was very cold, I got to keep it on. I had sunglasses on my head, they just asked me to hold them in my hands above my head in the scanner. Otherwise I didn't take off anything but shoes.

      Remember to consider the weight of your carry-on. Most airlines have a 50 lb limit for a carry-on, but some are less. And remember that you'll be needing to lift it above your head into the overhead. If it's a bit heavy, just split the weight between your (carry-on) personal item and carry-on luggage.

    I have found in some airport the most effective way is to set up the security check just before the boarding waiting area at the gate.
    This way it can prevent the bottle neck at the security check, allows passengers to carry their bottle of water until just before boarding and make them more convenient in every way, but definitely need more personnels and machines.

    • @JohnS-er7jh
      @JohnS-er7jh Год назад

      You must be young (or never flown in the United States). That is how Security check points used to be, at the boarding waiting area at the gate (and it was handled by the airports/airlines). That was until 9/11. After that incident the Federal Government created the TSA, so this way there could be one standard/one agency in charge of Airport Security. Unfortunately, there are still over 90% of prohibited items that get through security (including a man with a knife that attacked another passenger recently), And other incidents that led to increased security measures (shoe bomber, underwear bomber and the UK Liquid Bomb Plot). However, I don't see a 9/11 type terrorists taking over the plane again, because the passengers will just revolt and beat them into oblivion.

      TSA requires you take off your shoes when you are being checked by security. Try to wear socks and easy to remove shoes for hygiene and comfort.

    • @alaskancoppertop
      @alaskancoppertop 5 лет назад

      Military personnel in uniform can sometimes get a pass on that. Because of my boot size, I never had to take them off, but my battle buddy did because his boots were big enough to have a metal support piece in the sole that set it off. I've also provided escort assistance for a friend traveling with small children and they didn't have to take their shoes off or go through the metal detector or scanner, they just did a light hand pat down and a quick wand on the kids after the adults went through the metal detector. Of course, flashing military IDs probably helped.

      You can definitely keep your cell in your backpack. If you have your phone in your pants/jacket pocket when going through TSA (as I generally do), you can easily stash it in the bin or zip it up quick in your pack if you want a bit more security - since it will most likely make it to the other side before you do. Happy travels!

    I must respectfully disagree with you regarding TSA Pre-Check. It is a joke and my bag is always pulled aside for additional screening, very frustrating. It is to the point that I completely remove everything out of my bag; computer, food, MP3, charger cords, everything. Then I remove shoes, belt... everything. Why? because pre-ck is just as bad, actually worse because they dont have the large bins, only the small ones and after it is all said and done, the regular line is so much faster and easier than pre-ck, and there is less stress as I already know what is coming and what TSA hates.
    Now some TSA are very resonable, normal people who are doing their jobs such as the ones at SNA, GRR, AZO, DTW, ICT, IAH and in some cases, even MSP and ATL although there have been one or two bad hair days. There are a couple places though that one must watch out for as they make the 1930's Sturmabteilung look like choir boys, and that is the TSA at BTV and PIT.

      I've never removed jewelry, especially my dogtags and necklace if I'm wearing one. Only thing I've been told for the scanner is move it to the back so they don't have to feel up my chest for the pat down and I've never set off the metal detector. I do take off my watch because of the size and it does trigger metal detectors, but if I'm wearing my silicone bracelets, I leave them on.

      A. You answered your own question--not everybody travels enough to make it worthwhile.

Doesn’t need to take off his shoes and if you have global u enter the country much faster at the airport than others .

      Linzey Acord there is tsa precheck that is around $80 and that covers when you travel within the US to go the lines faster . Then if you pay $100 you get Tsa precheck and Global- global means when you enter the US from traveling abroad you don’t have to wait in the long lines like other people do upon entering the US. It’s a quicker process that’s all. I’ve only travel abroad a handful of times since I got it and found it worked great ! And even if you don’t plan to go abroad pay the $20 extra and get global because you never know if you go abroad.

    It's probably easier for men, but belts with a plastic belt buckle have made my life easier at the airport since you won't have to take it off. Once in a blue moon an agent will ask about the belt but I just let them know it's plastic and move on.
    Also, I toss everything in my pockets into my baseball cap or the quick grab pocket in my bag before even getting in line for the TSA check (keeping ID and ticket in hand of course).

      Eagle Creek I've been around the block once or twice. I always manage to over pack and forget stuff. The struggles of traveling with photography gear. Haha.
      That being said, I'm really looking forward to you new NatGeo Guide Series line. I'm looking at the 40L backpack and while looking at it some concerns came up.
      With NatGeo being heavy in photojournalism and the Eagle Creek team having a NatGeo photographer in the promo vids... I'm curious as to why none of the bags have any consideration for photo gear. Or, at least, accessories for delicate gear like specialized cubes or sleeves.
      Is that something that will be offered in the future perhaps? I'm a hobbyist/amateur photographer (shameless plug @surveillance_penguin) and would love some EC padded cases for my gear to use in the Guide Series 40L.
      With other camera bag companies releasing travel bags and accessories I'm still a little hesitant to pull the trigger.

    • @eaglecreek
      @eaglecreek  5 лет назад

      We're glad you're stoked on the Nat Geo line. We're pretty excited about it, too.
      In regard to considering photography equipment, we get this question often. We understand that a lot of your most expensive gear has it's own hard cases, so instead of creating compartments that may or may not work for you, for this line we chose to build great gear that's nice and open to allow for whatever the shape of your gear. If you want some protection or "cases" however, we do have Pack-It in lots of sizes to help you keep your things together - and mobile!
      We really like the Utility Backpack 40L for camera gear. We were just at a consumer event this weekend and a photographer packed it on up with his stuff and it looked great! Hope that helps.

    • @slickslabmcknabful
      @slickslabmcknabful 5 лет назад

      Makes sense to a certain extent. While I really do like the NatGeo line and am a bit of a bag collector it's hard to bite the bullet for the NatGeo 40L. The Peak Design offers greater organization with their cube system (photography geared) while offering an excellent travel bag option but it's privey. I ended up getting an F-Stop Lotus though and was sold on the modular system geared to photo gear when needed. While I understand not wanting to commit to a specific layout for a bag, modular is where it's at and I know you guys could probably make some very nice camera packing cube solutions. Just look at all the folks using your bags for travel; chances are you'll notice that a bunch are bloggers, vloggers, and maybe a splash of photographers. When we go adventuring most of us definitely want to capture and share those moments and stories on the trail. I'll wait and see if there's any more in depth reviews on this bag since it's still tempting.
