  • How to sleep easily on a plane? People who can easily fall asleep on a plane are among the lucky few because most of us aren’t able to doze off in a cramped space, sitting in such an uncomfortable position and surrounded by total strangers.
What if we told you there are some simple tricks that can help you catch some Z’s on board? Who knew that flying on a Tuesday or keeping your seat belt fastened could actually make a difference?
    TIMESTAMPS
Night is the best time for a flight 0:34
The best days to fly are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 1:27
The perfect seat is by the window 2:16
Tilt your seat back to the max 3:17
Clothes should be warm and comfortable 3:58
Fasten your seat belt over your clothes 4:43
Get yourself some sleeping accessories 5:25
Control the scents around you 6:05
    Put your gadgets away 6:59
    Food and drinks 7:34
    SUMMARY
    - It’s great if you can pick a flight for the time you usually sleep at. Wake up 2-3 hours earlier on the day of your flight to help you fall asleep faster on board later on.
    - If you want fewer passengers and more space, pick the most unpopular days for booking flights: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as a rule. You might even get up to 3 seats to yourself!
    - Always try to pick a window seat to rest your head on the wall and not be bothered by your neighbor wanting to get up to go to the bathroom. If you normally sleep on your left side, aim for seat A. If your right side is your preferred sleeping position, pick the window seat on the opposite side of the plane.
    - If you want good quality sleep in the cabin, adjust your seat as far back as it’ll go. Just make sure the person behind you doesn’t mind.
    - To have a sound nap onboard, you should wear loose clothes made of natural materials that don’t constrict your movements. If your airline doesn’t provide blankets, take a jacket and warm socks too.
    - A seat belt fastened over your clothes or blanket won’t make your sleep more comfortable, but it will prevent flight attendants from waking you up if the plane experiences turbulence.
    - Light and noise are the main culprits that keep you from getting needed shuteye. So this answer might be obvious: use a sleeping mask and earplugs!
    - You can control the scents in your immediate surrounding. Just sprinkle the head rest or your travel pillow with some lavender oil or any other essential oil you like.
    - Don’t watch movies on your phone, tablet, or laptop because the blue light of the screen wakes your brain up. Most sleep experts say you should put away all your electronics at least half an hour, or, better yet, an hour before you plan on dozing off.
    - If you want to be fast asleep, don’t overeat onboard. The food should be light and healthy, while the best drink option is tea (the herbal variety is perfect) or just plain water.

I take 15 hour flights a few times a year so I have tried a few things to make it more pleasant. I used to hate flying and never slept on the plane but now I can sleep for the majority of the flight.. usually around 12 hours by following my routine below!
    - take gravol 30 mins before flight
    - wait until first meal is served before doing any of the next steps (usually within the first hour of the flight)
    - after eating I usually go to the bathroom and get changed into my pjs, wash my face and brush my teeth.. basically whatever you do before you go to bed when you are at home.
    - take a 5mg pill of Zopiclone (ask your doctor for a prescription but sometimes this isn’t needed as the gravol can make you drowsy as well)
    - apply lip balm as my lips usually get very dry on the plane, especially when I’m sleeping. The dark blue Blistex works best.
    - I download guided sleep meditation videos to my phone and listen to them with my headphones on (The Honest Guys is my favourite RUclips channel for this)
    - put on a lavender scented moisturiser on my hands and around my neck. The scent is very faint so the person next to you won’t be bothered by it but it will help relax you.
    - put on my eye mask and fluffy socks
    - when and if I wake up during the flight, I usually go to the bathroom and stand at the back of the plane for a few minutes to help the blood circulate to my legs then I fall to sleep when I get back to my seat :). Remember to keep a water bottle with you and stay hydrated.

If you are in business class seat that can lie flat, you can sleep. For the rest of us sitting a small cramped upright seat, you are unlikely to get any decent sleep without chemical intervention. When I'm on on long haul flights there are plenty of times when my eyes are shut and it looks like im asleep, but there is no sleeping going on. The best advice is try not to sleep, stay awake for the whole flight, then arrive really tired so you sleep that night. I loved the line 'you trick your body into thinking you have slipped into bed' ........ and anyone who has ever tried to sleep in an economy seat on a 10hr plus flight laughed and laughed.

A travel mask with pockets that carry flat speakers (used to play white noise) works so well on a plane that I use it at home when I can’t sleep.
The smell idea works too but not this way. For 2 days before a long flight I use my travel wrap as a blanket. (It is actually just a huge microfiber shawl.) Then when I travel it has the smell of my clean bed allowing me to sleep. It works in the hotel too.

Travel pillows are certainly a good idea. However, if you're going to recommend them, perhaps you should also suggest using them properly and NOT as shown in your photo at 5:40. The opening in the pillow is SUPPOSED to go in the BACK!!!!!!! Placing the thickest part of the pillow UNDER YOUR CHIN so that your head tilts back will open your breathing airway to the max, increase the proper curve of the bones in your neck, and place the least amount of pressure on your shoulders and skull, thereby giving you the best chance at a restful and healthier sleep experience. 99.9% of people use these pillows incorrectly. Don't make the same mistake!!!!

I believe there were at most 100 People on the Plane. We all had a whole middle row to sleep stretched out and well, could get more food and in general it was the calmest flight ever. I carry a Ziploc bag with antiseptic wipes. Mine are medical grade because I'm a nurse and have access to them. As soon as I take my seat I wipe the seat arms, all the buttons and every surface on or near the seat tray table as well as all of the vents, buttons and controls on the area over my head.....the air flow nozzle & light. I also carry antiseptic hand wipes that I have added a little bit of antibacterial gel. I also swab the inside of my nostrils with a generic antibiotic ointment. I learned that one from an interventional cardiologist. The wipes go with me to the bathroom. And, I am a bit peculiar and will also have a Ziploc with a few light weight vinyl gloves for in the bathroom. Nobody's in there to laugh at me so I don't care. I usually get some curious looks as I wipe down my seat area. Most of the time when I shrug my shoulders and say I'm a nurse and I'm a little weird, Passengers sitting nearby will ask if I have an extra wipe that they can use.

The best sleep I ever had on the plane was for a 13+6 hour plane ride, not including layover (hence the 13+6). Anyways, here's my tips, especially if you have a fear of flying:
    1. I got the Trtl Pillow (not really a pillow, but it works really well). There's so many different neck pillows out there, that you just have to buy them, try it out, and return it if it doesn't work (I don't condone returning it after your trip just to save money, but if it really doesn't work, then return it). Buy it several weeks in advance before your flight, so you can try out what works the best for you - AND it will give you time to smother your smell on it. My Trtl pillow was so stinky when I got it that I had to wash it, so I'm glad I didn't order it last minute. A comfy neck pillow/wrap is the best advice I can give to you because it really is amazing when you find the one ;).
    2. Sleeping pill. Why did this video not recommend it? It works wonders for long flights. IF YOU HAVE FEAR OF FLYING, and if you have insurance, go to the doctors, tell them that you're flying and need something to calm you down because you fear you'll freak out and have a meltdown in the middle of the air. They will prescribe you with a muscle relaxant or anxiety medicine. If you don't have insurance, Xanax can cost you a hundred bucks or two. So the next best option is plain old sleeping pills. Whatever pills you end up with, MAKE SURE you take some several weeks in advance so you KNOW how it feels like and what side-effects it causes you. Xanax made me drool excessively in my sleep, even on less than 1/2 a pill, but at least I knew this before I boarded, so I was prepared with cutting my pills into 1/4 and pocketed napkins for occasions that I can't get one from the flight attendant.
    3. Ear plugs or music to plug into your ears. I blasted rock music on my flight because I was so afraid of flying. That's my preference of music. Yours can be anything. But ear plugs work amazingly well too! I tried it on a return flight, and I seriously snored almost immediately because it was like white noise. Very comforting. Make sure you get comfy ear plugs. Foam is ideal if your ears are prone to aches like mine.
    4. Do-Not-Disturb sign or signal. It isn't necessary if you don't mind getting woken up to eat your meals, but if you really don't want to get woken up, either let the flight attendant know (when he/she's not busy) or write a NICE "Sorry, I'd like to sleep, please do not disturb" sign. But letting the flight attendant know is the best way because she'll mark your seat on long distance flights. Domestic flights will not care about you at all, so this tip will not apply to domestic flights.
Everything else was already in this video.

Regarding a sleeping pill, to avoid the hassle and cost of going to the Dr, and paying for a med, just use over the counter Benadryl. An adult can take up to two; I'm sensitive to it so even one is too much for me, I take the childrens chewable tablet which has half the amount of one adult pill. If you haven't taken it before, try it before bedtime before your trip to see how you feel. It will dehydrate you, added to the dehydration from just being on a plane, so drink water. Now, deal with getting from that window seat to the bathroom, that's another story.

Remember how offices often remind us that they are a fragrance-free office? That's because so many people are extremely sensitive to fragrances. They can't shop in the laundry products section, sniff for the fragrance-free products they must have or search for a mild, natural fragrance they could possibly tolerate. It's really not just in their heads! I know some of them.
Some reactions can be: cough, sneeze, the throat can collapse shut causing air to barely get through. Some get terrible headaches or other maladies. Just wearing scented antiperspirant and a mildly scented cologne 2 rows away will cause the reaction.
So please, use any suggestion but the fragrance one!

Make sure to make a few pleasant comments to your neighbor at the beginning of the flight and learn a little about their travel. It helps me feel at ease with close proximity to others. Go to sleep as much as you can. When you land, follow up with what you talked about 14 hours earlier and wish them well. I know everyone's personal tale with that brief moment and, I feel at ease after landing as well. With international travel, I learn a bit of someone else's personal story in most cases. Mostly though, shut the f up during the actual flight.

I have a combination of things that make it easy for me to sleep on a plane:
    I’m:
    Small
    Flexible
    Social
    Fall asleep easily
    Love sleep
    Fly often

      Me too! :0
I also am a child, (11) so people are always careful not to wake me up, and I can lay on my moms lap so I get more space.

Aisle seat fan right here 🙋🏻‍♀️ the window seat is hard to get up and worse when the people next to you are sleeping and you need to go to the restroom.

Once I really had to go to the toilet, I passed through a guy beside me who was sleeping, utilising my small and flexible (and enough strength to hold some difficult positions 😂 - while trying to not touch him at all) body to the max.
Btw I love window seat also because it really helps with motion sickness

Aisle seat definitely. But on the other hand, other people in the row wake YOU up climbing over you. I do windows on domestic flights.

A good trick is to buy cheap sunglasses and wear them for a few weeks to get used to them. Next cover the lenses with black tape. Wear them when you want to sleep on the plane. They prevent light reaching the eyes and are more comfortable than the sleep shades across the nose. They cut out the light from peoples screens and those passengers that raise the blind. They also are easy to raise so you can see if you want to get up or look around if startled.

Glasses, being made of hard plastic, are much more uncomfortable than a mask. Most people sleep with their head on its side, that wouldn't work, glasses press into your face uncomfortably and could break. A mask is way better.

    • @gabbycamp
      @gabbycamp 5 лет назад +6

A better trick is to wear a hoodie, put on a sleep mask... then put on a beanie and pull it over the sleep mask, put in earplugs, then pull the hood of the hoodie over your beanie and tie the strings really tight to secure all that... seriously so comfy... you look like a nerd... but comfy

The seats infront of the lavatories are actually pretty good if you want to recline your seat really far out. You dont have to think abt annoying the person behind you because theres no one behind you. Theres usually a big space

As for electronics, it's always best to put them away, but if you must, you might install f.lux, it eliminates the blue light on your screen and so you don't have to worry about it waking you up (you can choose when to turn it on). For a better combo, put f.lux and also put it away a lot of time before sleeping, i. e. when you are eating.
As for the seats, I'd recommend falling asleep just the way your seat is, and when you are super tired and midway on to it, lean back your seat. That way you'll feel sooo good that your seat reclines, instead of doing it when you're not sleepy and thinking "that's not gonna help". ;)

Maybe traveling at night is better for getting sleep, but I’d rather travel in the day to avoid having that issue. It’s too bad the cheapest flights are always night time though.

Please leave the perfume at home. About 10-15% of the popukation can have violent reactions to fragrance. Consider the health of others so that you both have a pleasant flight.

I learned this from a flight attendant--take a scarf or pashmina, and tie your head to the headrest to keep your head from rolling forward and waking you up. Tie the tighter part over your forehead, and then pull a loose part of the scarf over your eyes instead of eye shades. Use a neck pillow too, and also an inflatable small pillow for your lower back. Take benedryl, Ambien, or other sleeping aids. Rest your feet on your backpack if there's no footrest.

I’ll be flying in seat 7F i chose it because it’s further in front, not the first, second, but the third seat. Second would be good too. 7F was the only seat i slept in. Most of the people would prefer left side, but i like the right. Thanks for reading my essay.

When you are taking off either chew lollies or put rolled up tissues in your ear to prevent them from popping and if they do pop then yawn and they should be all good.
