The C2 Corvette was the first to have the Stingray name (or Sting Ray as it was then). We take a pristine 1967 model out for a spin to see why it was the car of choice for the coolest men on the planet.

I bought a 327 340 horse corvette roadster in 1966. That car was just so fast for its time and really cool. Two years later I was battling NVA in Kontum south Vietnam with the US Army's 4th infantry div. I made $265 a month for my tine in Vietnam and every cent of that pay was for my vette back home. When I got back I stuffed a 427 in my car and street racing wasn't as populate as it was when I went into the service. So I raced the local drag strips. Since those days when I was a young man to this day I have owned eight mid year vettes. I spent this past winter building a 63 roadster with a ls 1 engine. I have the car up and running and it has some big balls with a 3:55 posi and original side pipe exhaust. So I am planning a trip to the drag strip in the next week or two and just see what it will do. I am 71 years old accept when I am behind the wheel of my vette. Then I am still the young kid I use to be. BTW installing the ls1 engine I did not have to hack anything up ob the car so it can still go back to the origenal engine setup. ( Have class and wrap your ass in fiberglass )
George Humphrey I love this
It's great to see such a big amount of retro-car related videos on a channel that feels young. I mean it's great to see old people talk about modern cars, but I feel it's better to see younger people talk about old cars, it makes young people understand things that they've never lived. I prefer seeing reviews (and some history) of old Corvettes, hell I'd even prefer seeing your take on old Volvos rather than dream cars (for some people) such as the Porsche 918 or the McLaren P1.
I feel your videos have the power to make people more interested in cars, and I thank you for it.
***** I did. I didn't realize it was in black and White until I rewatched it, that's how good it was. I was thinking that old mainstream cars could be interesting as they're cheap nowadays.
+Carfection Would you please give a reference on soundtrack.
63 split window the coolest corvette ever made
Im with you on that one
Beautiful Car. If they werent so expensive, I would definitely have one in my garage. Those small bugs he complained about, the brakes locking up, the speedometer not working, ect. are due to it sitting in the museum. Any classic car owner irons those problems out little by little as he drives the car and finds them. I know I have. Keep up the good work and keep featuring these gems. Thanks
I haven't done a lot of commenting on RUclips...but I have to on this. As a Corvette owner, I believe the C2 is the BEST Corvette ever produced. But to say the new one doesn't stir the soul?
I own a C5 Z06 (2004 model) and when the C5 hit the market for the 1997 model year in reinvigorated Corvette. Much stiffer, much better built (still not great by any stretch) but it certainly reinvigorated the car. The C6 in my opinion is pretty lackluster, it was a better car than the C5, it should be but it was very evolutionary.
My neighbor has a C7 and I've now been in and seen numerous C7's and I have to say they're simply amazing. The C7 is a classic in the making best I can tell.
It's still no C2 but the C7 definitely stirs my soul.
I disagree about the C7. It is the first one SINCE the C3 that has stirred the soul in the same way. The new corvette absolutely deserves the StingRay name. It is drop dead gorgeous.
I have a 1967 427 Tri-Power and a 2009 Z06. I couldn't agree with you more regarding the exciting driving experience of the C2. Back in the sixties it was unheard of to have a sports car with 4 wheel disc brakes and a independent rear suspension. The C2 was truly ahead of it's time and remains timeless.
I love the rumble of a V8. There is just nothing like it.
I agree the old cars where milestones and drove evolution and design forwards. Though to me the C7 Z06 is the best looking and most desirable Corvette ever!
A very enjoyable presentation and a nostalgic look at one of my favourites, the Sting Ray (yes, two words). Corvette fans all have their preferred generation and as much as I like the 63-67 cars I disagree that modern Corvettes are not attractive. The C7 is really impressive but I still prefer the lines of my C6 Coupe. Mine may be a base model with the small engine (like the one in the video!) but times have changed: 6.2 litres and 436 hp on tap.
Gen. 1 SBC engines available off the shelf with 500+ HP now... www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rfhrk
Stumbled on this vid while surfing. Loved it! You're commentary was top-shelf. "...like Thor blowing his nose..." cracked me up so much , I'm still laughing over it 5 minutes later - never quite thought of the song of a sidepipe like that before! For that alone it was worth the 'thumbs up'. Keep up the good work!
This really is one of those cars that will only get better as time goes on. For me a black 79 Corvette coupe will always be one of my favorites.
What a stirring tribute to America's only true sports car, its early history, the feeling of freedom driving one engenders, and a nod to another American icon, the Beach Boys toward the end. Well done ode from across the pond!
Late C1 with four headlamps is hands down the best looking Corvette ever made. This one is also beautiful, but slightly less cool.
Modern Corvettes still look good. The only thing I can think of about them that isn't so attractive is maybe the weird bubble rear window on some of the C5 models. But Even that generation looks quite nice with the rear window that extends over the boot more.
Nice to see a European so enthused about a classic American sports car with a muscle car's engine. But I disagree about modern Vettes. They not only are prettier and safer, but significantly faster... While having a large percentage of that original flavor of the original. The C7 is my personal favorite, and also my dad's, as he owned both a 73' (C3) and 91' (C4).
On second thought other than the C-2 c rap it was a very good presentation. Very Informative and even though I've been in to Corvette since 1960 I leaned some things. Well done Mate!
if anyone is wondering, from what I can tell this baby is packing an L79, a trick version of the 327 with Forged pistols, hydraulic lifter cam and other trick things that came stock on it.
Yep...
L79 65 Roadster here
Bought in 1973
I love the classic Corvette. I think the C7 is a beautiful car too.
Such an amazing car! Great video, BTW.
the 1967 is my personal favorite too !!!
I love how the C2 looks, but I also love how the C7 Z51 looks... I would say the C7 isn't beautiful like the C2, but it is really attractive and angry.
I love the C7, Benz AMG GT , Ftype , Vantage and Roma. I’m with you on the front engine GT cars.
Whenever I see one of these in person my jaw drops.
I don't usually like american cars but i remember the first time i saw this in a music video i fell in love, undoubtedly the best looking vette ever :3 and my third favorite classic after the 300sl and shelby cobra
VydeSupercars
haha tbh it looks very cobra like and i don't know too much about it
1:53 Truly excellent shot. Good film.
More Corvettes on the V8Lounge Channel. Greets from germany
Great intro but Robocop was not filmed in Detroit. It was based in Detroit but filmed in Dallas, Texas.
In those days design was a big part of car making. Now it's efficiency and packaging that matters due to cost and despite many efforts design often comes second. This is the reason many like some Italian cars since design still is their nr 1 priority.
Good episode.
I love the vette c2 coupe too💪
best american car ever.... although it really was more of a muscle car than sports car and i don't think they were sports cars until the c4
Adam Othman I honestly think the Corvette is more of a grand touring car rather than a sports car. Why? It's not really a sports car because It's too heavy, the engine is low revving, and I hear that most classic American cars have over boosted power steering and pedals with poor road feel. Correct me if I'm wrong. But on the other hand, it makes a better GT car because it does have plenty of low end torque for highway cruising, it's style is unmistakable and it has a big trunk with lots of room for luggage.
They were always sports cars... 'muscle cars' were always midsize family cars with big engines capable of 14's or quicker in 1/4 mile...
@@reubensolly2237 - The 1960's Corvette came stock with up to 560 HP, so who cares if low revving? We drivers like easy power steering... only the magazines complained about it... and a lot of other things that didn't need complaining about... but they had to write something... www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rfhrk
Dude this c2 427 had 420HP! Cars from the UK of this era just could never keep up. Not even close
435 HP also offered... also a limited '430' HP L88 version that was actually 560 HP...
God C2 Corvette is beautiful. I would love to own one.
That RoboCop hoodie is almost as sweet as the car.
My favorite Vette gen.
Missing Alex but still a great video.
I know that there is a sense of automotive romance when you drive a classic but, you sounded like you were a bit carried away with that sensation on the voice over parts of the video. Did you say something about blowing that side exhaust? Kiddiiiing, great stuff.
I have had the good fortune to have owned several "sports" cars. A '63 C-2-327, a '58 TR-3, and a '77 Datsun Z. The Stingray was the least of the three. The TR-3 and the Z were so superior in my humble opinion.
I have to admit the C-7 seems to be a super car bargain. Go Corvette...
Corvette C,1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Good show
But as much as I like the C2 I would never give up my C6 Z06 for a C2( if value had nothing to do with it). I've had my Z for several years now and I still get hard on every time I look at it and drive it.
When you mention the Camaro they had several great cars over the years and I had an 2001 SS which still to this day every time I see one my heart skips a beat. Same thing with the Mustang as much as I love the classics, the cars that they are making today have just as much hart and soul they just have not been around as long.
just IMO
Could I please ask you some questions?
Did your Z06 ever broke? if yes, what was it? how was it handled? are you taking it to the track on the weekends?
Thanks in advance.
Yeah no problem,
The car had a rough idle and the SES light came on shortly after I bought it new. It was actually a big problem for me because it happened several times. I pushed the lemon law and ended up getting some cash and they fixed the problem with no issues since.
I smell gas when I push it hard for several hours but I believe it just pressure releasing when driving it hard at higher elevations.
I drive the car fairly hard in my opinion. I have ran it in the 1/4 mile several times with a best time of 11.8 on street tires. But where is sees most of its action is in the Mountains where I will put over 2000 miles of extremely hard driving, where I feel I push the car close to it limits.
FYI I'm a mechanic by trade
I had a 2001 SS Camaro that I built to run 11's sold it to my brother to get the Z06
I have a 2014 WRX my wife's car
Good points
the car is amazing power handling breaking and looks.
I have averaged over 30 mpg on long drives going 80 mph
oil changes every 8000 miles
plenty of storage space
Comfortable ride IMO
Bad
Tires don't last
feel free to ask anything else if you want or if I didn't answer what you were looking for
william ripke Thank you so much, that's everything I wanted to know.
Wheel centers are missing entirely.
Hood is for a big block car - not small block.
As impressive as the 327 is, the 427 is mind blowing...really
True what you say about the appearance of the car. Not with you on the 427 though. Big Blocks are brutal in a C2 but the high reving small block is so much fun and the Corvette was not intended for the drag strip where you need the biggest engine you can get, but race tracks and winding roads. Independent rear suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes and away you go.
plz make a video about corvette c7
Am I the only one seeing the License Plate saying "Red Shoe"?
Those missing hub caps are bothering the crap out of me.
I'd say he lost at least half his hair driving this car.
6 people dislike this car.
Philistines.
if it's a 327, why does it have the 427's hood?
Engine looks to be a 350 HP 327"... lots of people put the 427 style hood on... 350 HP wasn't "smallest engine" offered, I suspect 250 (regular gas), 275, or 300 HP 327" was...
I like the C3 the most then C7
Wouldn't say the newer ones aren't that attractive, but they've deviated from their roots into more of a brute-force and aggressive sports car. At times, they've been tawdry too.
Deeeeetrooooiit!
c4 conv. and now c5 conv. owner;)
Motor trend with a 69 charger: Good car, you gotta realize its old, so its slow. Motor trend with any old chevy: too slow
he likes U.S cars
That first 53 model in the film is drop dead stunning. The red 327 is gob smacking ugly. How did they go sooo wrong.
Your taste in cars seems to be broken, or at least severely out of whack...
Sweep1511
Well we all like different things I suppose.
You Brits found a way to be the origin of the corvette. You guys can be so silly sometimes. Somehow you clam have your hands in on everything. With your "British engineering". "British engineering" seems to be said in every other sentence.
Lights busted?
I don't like seeing the big block hoods on small block cars.
never!
lost me at the word swagger.
That word doesn't have any of stigma surrounding it in the UK that is has in the US. No one says "swag" here. Not without a heavy dose of knowing irony at least.
I like the '53 much better than this one.
What went wrong America, only these past couple years have they started making decent cars again that can start to rival the European car making geniuses. Old cars like this one are cool as hell though but the crappy plasticky corvettes etc like the Zo6 and other muscle cars fairly recently where plastic straight line only pieces of rubbish.
It's a pet peeve of mine when people open the headlights of cars with "flip-up" headlights without them on because they think it looks cool. It doesn't. Stop doing it.
+kylethestyle How it looks kool I have no idea. I've an 850i and even at night in I'll drive with side lights only. Headlights up: just for the B-roads in darkness.
Couldn't you get a better example of the car you're featuring??
That corvette just looks old, worn, and quite tired.
It's 47 years old! And frankly it looks damn good for its age.
That is the look of a car that is actually driven as it very well should be. You wan't perfection, go to a museum.
Like ur mum
I disagree. Modern Corvette, especially the latest one, are starting to bring back the fame to the brand. I don't think it's okay to put down modern cars for the sake of making the old ones look good.
So why dose your 67 327 have a 427 stingr hood??? So much for matching numbers. and lets get this Stright Eruo boy these cars were never called C-2's (Woosy) Their MIDYEARS or STING RAYS. The next group of Corvettes were called Sharks for the Mako Shark or STINGRAYS one word. C- this and that came out with the C-4 as they ran out of cool names for the Corvette
Lol
...Is it just me, Or can none of these brits not drive on the road?...Seems like every car video there either in the middle of the lines, Or just they go back in forth between the 2 lanes..
I've only seen 1 corvette on the road and it was a C6
Even in the USA, we mainly drive our Corvettes on the left side of the road... LOL!
5:22 Swagger? Really.... :\ Nope
british english != american engrish
Swagger is seen as quite old-fashioned in the UK. It's a perfectly acceptable word.
Could we get back the shaved hair bloke please?
Cant watch more than 2 minutes.
I think thee c7 looks better
60 year old car.
All you guys that make these videos always have the camera on the driver. Have the camera on the hood of the car and the steering wheel and the speedometer. The viewers want to experience being in the car and guess what? We can still hear you talking about the car with the camera on the road! This sucks!
and then the liberal socialist dumped buckets of swill on the spirit of America and Britain and we are just now getting our feet back on the ground. never let it happen again!
Why did car manufacturers use acronym SS after WW2? Isn't that kind of disrespectful when you consider that many Americans and Europeans fought against and died from Waffen SS troups? Thy could yous many other, like RT, RS, RR or whatever came to their minds.
It stands for Super Sport....please get over it
dodge used R/T
SS in both cases is an abbreviation..
Super Sport is so much cooler than Schutzstaffel. The war is over man and by the way, C2 Corvettes never used SS. That was a Camaro and Chevelle thing.
