1967 Chevrolet Corvette: American Nostalgia

  • The Chevrolet Corvette is the quintessential American automotive protagonist. It’s a car that Apollo astronauts drove on earth, but also one that’s won its class at Le Mans. Simultaneously a relatable product from Detroit and a sports car that stacks up against the best international efforts, the cult of Corvette has grown to a level of organized religion since the first ones rolled out in the 1950s. The C2 generation (like Matt Euson’s 1967 Stingray in today’s film) is widely loved for its looks, but it was also the first generation of Corvette that saw material success in motorsport. It’s a piece of American racing history, and for Matt Euson, it’s a piece of 1960s nostalgia that he shares with his family and friends whenever he can.

@Literally Shaking You're absolutely right. The split rear window is the coolest. Yet it made the car itself almost the Holy Grail among the C2s. It's become a museum piece rather than a car for a true enthusiast who can afford to buy it. I wanted to emphasize the fact that Matt has the car he can enjoy and its pedigree comes from the town he grew up in. I bet he could've had the splitty as well. Sometimes I'm just tired of these stiff guys on Petrolicious showing off their precious pieces of art. And they try so hard to look cool while driving them.

This video kind of reminds me of myself. I still own a 1967 Coupe today. I actually owned 2 '67's the first one a Vert. in 1970. I always loved the 2nd Generation C2 Corvette since Chevrolet rolled out the first '63 while I was in the 6th grade. The '67 Corvette is the most refined C2 that Chevrolet ever built and the most sought after Corvette out there still by Car Collectors all over today. I kicked myself later on after selling my first '67 Vert. during the early 70's to move up to a C3 generation. I owned 3 of them. This C2 stays with me to the end. Hopefully my daughter keeps it in the family when I am gone. I own some other collector cars along with 3 other Corvettes a C3,C5 and C6 all Coupes. I kind of relate to the fellow who posted this fine video up above. Glad You Tube put it right in front of me this Sunday morning as a Video I may like. They were right in their assumption.

The c2 Corvette had a front lifting problem at higher speed when it competed in Motorsports, which is why both the mustang and Daytona coupe always beat the c2. Pete Brock's first professional assignment was being part of the c2 Corvette design team. He advised the head designer you change the front to prevent lift, but he told Pete to fuck off......

I am not in the age bracket of the demographic who would fully appreciate or have memories of this car, but I still think there is this lost appeal with these classics.. There's just something rugged, raw and badass about these older models.. both the interior and the exterior.. This style really captures the essence of the "stingray". You look at the most modern corvette and the C8 looks more like an imitation ferrari than a vette. Not saying it's not cool, but i just feel something is lost. Even though I wasn't even born during this era, I can see the appeal of these classic cars.

jdl 96 I think it’s fine that they be drag raced and enjoyed, but not when used by some unkempt suburban cowboys to fulfill their overly-macho fantasies. Richard Rawlings, Robb Pitts and the guy from vanguard motor sales is what I mean.

I was 6 when the C2 first appeared on the streets of Nashville. And I ached for it on a level beyond my comprehension. Even the pedal car version that Western Auto sold stirred something inside me. And I see it in your son's eyes. This is a beautiful example and a great story. The fact that it's not a garage queen is mind blowing. My '96 Corvette is a daily driver so I know the feeling of accomplishment it brings. Some long for the latest, fastest, most high tech. I long for the days before the Optispark was conceived. LOL. Props to you, Matt. A C2 is still on my bucket list.

Great video on one of the most beautifully designed cars ! Watching the owner and his son eating donuts and doing a little hellriding through the backroads, the car sounds amazing sidepipes have such a killer attitude when it goes by. Passing down the knowledge and passion to his son is every gearheads dream hopefully he develops the same emotional connection as his dad. Looks like a really nice neighborhood in Indiana

My dad got my mom a vette from I think ‘67 as well. She never drove it, and it sat in the garage until a month before I turned 16 when my dad sold it. My soul was crushed that day.

Seeing him and his son riding along reminded me of my Dad and I cruising around in his 61 Austin Healey 3000 with top down.
That kind of bonding definitely turned me into a car guy. Wish I had that Healey!

I have several Corvettes and often people ask me which one is my favorite to drive. They expect me to say the C7 Z06 or my '67 Sting Ray Restomod. They are very surprised, when I state it's my '64 Sting Ray Coupe that is exactly, perfectly stock. It has a 365 hp engine with an appetite for leaded high octane fuel, that flows down the first year for Corvette Holley carburetor, it has factory AC with Freon pumped through it's veins. It has the off road exhaust that lets you hear that 30-30 cam. I has power brakes with metallic sintered drum brakes, that I think just work fine. No power steering, cause that wouldn't fit under the oversize L-76 engine's oil pan, even with it's steering play, it handles just fine. It has skinny bias ply white walls that drift nicely around corners. No, I think this video sums it up very nicely exactly, what it's like to drive one of these wonderful treasures. With the way things are evolving enjoy them while you can, I tell younger people to listen to or read the lyrics of the Rock Band Rush's song Red Barchetta, that's where we may be heading!

A c2 coupe with a small block and a 4 speed (pretty much the car in the vid) is a bucket list item for me. Sure the big block gets all the fame, but the lighter weight over the front axle and better balance is my preference.

Love those back roads and hope to get back to them soon.

Not a huge Corvette fan nor do I typically like black cars, but this video encapsulates the vintage car culture. The car & video are awesome, but the scene with the owner’s son smiling back at his Dad is priceless. Two huge thumbs up!

"You have to share" I loved that part at the end, Ive discovered the joy in sharing, we all want to share even if we dont know it yet. I consider my self a purist driver and in no way a show off, I hate cars or bikes that are all show and no real driving performance, I like purposely built thing, yet deep down I recognized I wanted to share, I wanted people to see my car, I enjoyed when they get excited, and found that in those moments Im sharing and connecting with people, and it has nothing to do with being a show off, its about sharing, and it happens the other way around too when people share their toys with me... I see all this people with their cool cars and they take them out for a ride, and they want people to see their flashy car, and I see their longing to share, but they dont know how to, and we dont know to either, and we all get into this pattern "he is showing off" "I'll pretend I dont care and it doesn't impress me".. Just share and enjoy

Same here. I've bought Nissan S14 Kouki to save at least one from autosport and ricers. Have rebuilt it in a perfect condition so I could drive it on everyday basis for 20 years+. Not many of them on roads these days, less and less with each year. People should be able to see classic cars on road not on RUclips or Wikipedia .
