Altered Book Black and White Collage Layout

- Today I have two more layouts in my latest altered book, a vintage Italian bankbook. I build up the pages from blank to complete, layer by layer, and talk about collage, composition, and a variety of mixed media techniques. I also have a free printable scan of the vintage butterflies I used in layout number 2 and the link is below.

Great to have a peek inside your mind as you decide which collage elements to choose. Loved your final layouts. The vintage black and white butterflies are calling out to me. Will have a go at printing them out.
Thanks, Helene. I am now second-guessing my decision NOT to use the ruins on tissue paper but they will go somewhere else just as good soon. Probably. Good luck with the butterflies. I do like that black and white style although you could also add some hand-tinting to them. Or both! Kelly

That little bird is so charming. It tells a story, as you like to do. I love to hear your thought processes and your actual process. Hi Alexandra. Yes, I know what you mean about leaving the rose. Off camera I spent ages going back and forth. In reality that layout that I show for six minutes took almost four hours to put together off camera! Kelly

Why thank you. Actually, this is not my real accent. I am from Mississippi in the southern parts of the state and my original accent is quite country but I've lived in the UK for 20 years and it has modulated over the years! Kelly
I've said it before, but I have to say it again...I adore this book. Your layouts are spot on, as always, and those gorgeous stamps really add a wow factor. Your reasoning about why you place your images is so helpful to me, because I tend to just run with my first idea, then kick myself because I think of a better one later. Thanks for this video, and I look forward to the next one xx
H Sandra. In my altered books I plan and plan and scheme and scheme. I spent literally over four hours on that second layout that I showed in about six minutes. I do have an art journal where I work spontaneously and glue down whatever is at hand and then add drizzles and marks and stuff and see how it evolves and transforms and there really is no right way, so I can learn and then take that spontaneous stuff I learned back to the planning and scheming and very careful pages and cross-pollinate techniques. (Did that make any sense whatsover?😮) Meaning, don't feel you have to corner yourself into running with that first idea. You can always let it percolate a bit and see if it really wants to be something else. Kelly

Dear Donna, thank you for this thoughtful message. The good news is that I am visiting France but the other news is that my husband needed an emergency root canal the day we arrived! It has been difficult and hectic and something had to give and that something was making videos. 🙄😮He is still waiting for the procedure (next week) and this is the first half-way calm day I've had in ten days. I just found a Frankenstein book that I wanted to use for an altered book BUT the pages are so brittle they just flake apart.
Is there a way to fix this problem?
Hi there, Kri. I am so sorry to say that nope, you might as well stop now because working on this book will end in tears. I have several videos where I talk about the importance of choosing an apt book in the first place, how it will set you for success or failure. The paper, how the spine falls open or doesn't, size - so many factors. Have a look at this and see if it helps. And let me know if I can clear it up some more. Kelly
