Best video of how to tie the FG I have seen. Each step was clearly explained and the reasoning behind each step was great. My new 'go to' FG. Thanks heaps 👍
I have finally mastered the twisting and weaving with your wrist/pinky. It took a while but your method makes it so easy to tie the FG and it is way better than the traditional under/over method with tension. I added 1 half-hitch before the rizutto to lock the FG in. Thank you for such a great video.
This method is really quick but looks like it wastes a lot more braid on the tag end. You also need really thick leader for it to hold out like that. The fg knot is also really good for light line for freshwater and ultralight applications. I have it tied with 6lb braid to 4lb mono on my trout/panfish rod right now, and the only way to tie it is with the pinky method, just because the line is so floppy and unmanageable
I tie the FG knot a total different way. Watching your video is definitely the way to go. You make it look so simple. Practice practice practice. I'm going to give this a shot thank you for sharing 💯
@@Le_person_au 🤔😮 I would be curious to see a video with the solution given by you. with that half hook. I think you're absolutely right. that helps the thread!
Great explanation of finishing the FG with a rizzuto instead of a double half-hitch. If you tie a braid to fluorocarbon, this is a great video to watch.
THANK YOU very much my friend. I've used this finishing knot now for like 3 years. When tied right, it's unmatched. I wish I could get his weave technique down, but I don't use 40# cable either. It's hard to do with 10#. The over/under method works though. 👌 Spot on mate
Awesome vid bro ! This has made it very simple and actually more simplistic for me. I tie them the same way but with slightly different methods and this has made it easier
Thx for the tutorial! I also don’t use half hitches as it adds bulk to a knot that is smooth. But on JB hollow core, I like to run the leader up into the hollow core around a meter, then whip the joint with light weight braid. Super smooth!! BTW, those are some sexy plugs behind you !😍
Does this work with lighter lines? I tried with 20lb braid to a tapered shock leader (15 - 50lb) and find the leader very flimsy and hard to get the wraps around. Maybe I'm missing something?
When I'm trying to tie a thin knot I finish the wraps, half hitch, tighten, 6 loop lock knot, cut your leader material an 8th of an inch and heat it up right after roll your fingers in the hot leader. It don't hurt too bad you get used to it. You want the tag end to melt into the top of the knot but be very careful. I pinch and use my nails as a heat shield. Then cut the braid and do the same with that making sure you just get that to a ball point. I've tried every single way and for me this knot is as much about strength as it is about being thin and this is the way to get that really really thin knot that only barely brushes the top guide. I've strength tested it and if done right between this and the rizzuto The line breaks in the middle. I'm not downing the rizzuto finish I just think this way is so much better.
Fantastic video, clear and concise! The links below for the "line tensioners" aren't working. Please describe what you're using and/or how to make these tensioners. Thanks!
Any cylindrical object with a grippy finish you can get a good grasp on. Could literally be cut dowel pieces wrapped in electrical tape if you want to make something. I just end up using whatever tool with a grip pad that's laying around. Hammer, pliers, whatever.

Try adding more turns the the rizutto and tying it with minimal slack line and tension 70% as tight as you tension the actual FG. Let me know how you go
I accidentally omitted the half hitches when practicing this knot and found the entire knot not only did NOT lengthen when tensioned. After tensioning, the knot simply could not be moved at either end in either direction without any glue & the crossovers all had darkened and visibly compressed the 80 lb mono I wrapped with the 60 lb suffix. The rizutto did what 5 or 6 half hitches couldnt, it locked the knot completely & permanently. Happy mistake. completely.
Hi, You can easily use wooden dowels that can be purchased at a hardware type store. I have done this and cut them to the desired length and wrapped them with some tape for better grip.
Most people do the half hitches then rizzuto. But it seems the rizzuto is enough from your demonstration. Also be careful with the line tensioners. You don’t want to wrap the line over itself on the tensioners. It will dig into itself. It needs to wrap around the tensioners without overlapping itself.
If its not tightening your FG then you've done something wrong. Might be the rizutto, because that one does take abit of attention on this vid to get it right but once you get it its piss easy.
la paix ou l'épée a few reasons. Could be wraps on the fg aren’t close enough together as your wrapping the fg there should be no gap between the wraps. Also could be over tightening the knot. But it is normal to get some leader twist just not a lot.
I can't get my head around why the second set of wrappings on the rizzuto works. Surely it would just unravel when you pull it. The first set is basically a uni knot, but the second is just wraps.
I’ve watched most FG videos on RUclips. Here’s my take, once the FG knot and 2 half hitches are done and you pull and tension the knot it’s basically done. All of the stuff tied after that like several more hitches or the rizzuto finish only help to keep the tag end from backing out.
@@ecksdog I get that. It's just to lock off the fg and tidy up the tag end. But I don't think the second set of wraps on the rizzuto do anything. All you're doing is wrapping the loop around the main line, so it would just unwrap as you pull it through. It's really only the first 5 wraps that work like a uni knot to tie off the tag end.
If you could slow it right down... that would be awesome... Take 20mins on slo mo to show me how to do it. I just dont understand whats going where and why... But... i can see its goodness. cheers man
Do you mean use a Chinese finger trap into the hollow core? If so in my experience JB hollow braid will splice up to its own breaking strain but anything thicker tends to be too big to thread.
Very risky knot. When doing the finishing knot… the ‘entanglement’ is not always consistent for a secure knot. U may pull how hard with your hands the knot remains intact. When fishing after repeated casting, the knot may unravel- your leader and lure will slip away… i rather stay with the conventional finishing for fg knot- more secure
It would be much easier to replicate what you are doing if you recorded from your eyesight point of view. I get the basics but hard to translate into action viewing from opposite point of view.
