Can You Ride Your Dirt Bike On The Road, LEGALLY? - Yes & Here's How

  • It's a common misconception that some dirt bikes can't be made street legal. It's just a matter of how many hoops are you willing to jump through and how much time you want to invest, but first off.. Why?
In a market saturated with overweight Dual Sports, left is the technical rider wanting something with a license plate that doesn't weigh 400lbs. You can either sacrifice agility and ride an obese hog through the woods, or lack a bit of road performance and have way more fun on the trails you really love. After being on both sides I decided to sell my CRF300L and give the all new CRF250F a try.
As the successor to the legendary 230F, the updated fuel injection brings this bike into the 21st century and makes it an awesome candidate for a lightweight Dual Sport. Getting the title transferred can be as easy as raising your right hand, or a long list of inspections and BMV visits. Thankfully regardless of what state you are in, the job can be done.
With the help from our good friends over at Rocky Mountain, today we install their Tusk street legal kit paired with the Squadron headlight from Baja Designs. With a little effort we now have another street legal Dirt Bike to enjoy not only on the trails, but the backroads across America.
Here are the parts we used!

    Baja Designs Headlight: bit.ly/BajaSquadron
    Integrated Turn Signals: bit.ly/TuskHandguardSignals

Vermont allows bikes manufactured for off-road to be converted to street legal. Put on the required equipment, pass state inspection, present proof to DMV and pay your DMV confiscatory taxes. Here in VT we have tons of unmaintained seasonal roads (referred to as Class 4 roads here). A big chunk of the NEBDR route is on these roads.

@@DiZZoLabs Section 4 passes by my house and I love riding our back roads. Our class 4 roads are a great way to see VT. There is a growing amount of dissatisfaction among locals with the amount of traffic that NEBDR has brought. Previously only a few locals rode these areas. Tread lightly, particularly on the maintained dirt roads between the class 4 sections. Those roads pass by homes and that extra motorcycle traffic is the primary source of the complaints. I suspect we'll see more radar enforcement this summer from our sheriffs. They are paid by towns to enforce speed and they get a cut of the action from every ticket written.

I had to convert my 2019 450X with all the road legal stuff and had to bring it to an inspection station, were they approved it and gave me a letter that I gave to the BMV and the titled it. Bought the bike brand new and might have been the first to road register the new Gen 450X in Maine. Only added thing Maine required was a chain guard on the swing arm. I only use it for the inspection and take it off the rest of the time.

I was able to make a Yamaha TTR 230 street legal in KY. It was relatively easy. Mostly because of a DMV clerk who was eager to help. I will say that most clerks were not familiar with the process. Thankfully, the clerk that I approached was helpful. Local sheriff dept had no problem recommending the bike for a street license after inspection. The requirements were Headlight (HIGH and low beam), horn, brake light (Front and rear), and turn signals. I pieced it all together with separate components and built a wire harness. Everything except the headlight ran on a 12V 5000mah Lipo battery. The stator was plenty for the Polisport headlight. I do not remember the Sheriff dept checking my Kenda K270s for DOT approval. Insuring the bike with liability was a non issue. The DMV used a generic bill of sale signed by myself and the previous owner as a means of assessing value for tax purposes. The only issue on the DMV side was a non-existent odometer. After some trial and error, the clerk noted "Not actual mileage" in the Title field for Odometer, and the state accepted it. They then issued my plate and I received a title in the mail about 2 weeks later. Fun fun fun.

I went through the process of getting a CRF250RX made street legal in TX. I also used the Tusk kit. For TX, you must have both a high and low beam. And you must also have a brake light switch for both the front and rear brakes. Blinkers aren't required in TX and I used the circuit for the blinkers for either the high beam or the extra brake, but I can't remember which. I don't think it was possible to have both beams, both brakes, and blinkers with the Tusk kit as is. I bought a keyed switch that I was hoping we could tie in to have some more security for the bike. We followed the instructions and all but it kept blowing the bike's main fuse. So the key only turns on the system to the dual sport kit, the lights and horn and all that. At some point I will address that issue and make the bike so that it requires a key to run. For now, it's doing what I need it to do, letting me connect trails. The headlight I got was an Amazon cheapy and it's worth no more than I paid for it. But I won't be riding after sundown, so that's okay too. If I ever do decide to ride it after hours, I might get a headlight mask for a CRF450L and then the Baja Designs kit for that bike.

I have an XR400R made street legal. I bought the bike with a street title already, but I am in the process of all the wiring and such. I have all the parts, (blinkers, stator, battery, wiring, etc.) I just need to install it all. I bought switchback running light/ blinkers and mounted the on the hand guards. The blinkers are sequential and sweep though from inside to outside and do not need a flasher relay. I also bought a key switch that has, OFF/RUN/RUN+LIGHTS so that I have the option to put all accessory lights on a separate curcuit. I bought wiring that has multiple wires encased in a coating (think phone cord) so that it's nice, neat, and organized. Here in Michigan, we don't need blinkers, but I want them. I also got a flashing brake light and a LED strip brake light. I want to be seen.

I converted two dirt bikes to street legal here in Indiana. Then Indiana changed the law and made it illegal to do so. No more conversion from "off road" to "motorcycle". Sucks but true. I'm not sure even licensing in another state and then trying to title it in Indiana will work.

I have ridden my 1993 kx250 two stroke from Dalton Gardens, ID to downtown Coeur D’Alene, which is a ten to fifteen minute drive many times.Have passed sheriff’s and police. Never had any issues with them. Don’t ride stupid, on the sidewalk, no lane splitting, and no riding on the freeway. Hell if you’re 18 or older you don’t even need a helmet as they recognize your an adult and you’re responsible for your actions.

Anyone have any clue how to make one street legal in Tennessee or if it’s possible?

    • @jamessettles6485
      @jamessettles6485 4 месяца назад

I live in TN and it's possible through dmv. They might or might not issue a ohv or non ohv title long as you have notarized BoS it's not stolen and no liens and be older than 9yrs and have fair market value less than $3k I believe. You need head/tail light doesn't have to have high and low a horn front/rear brakes no signals or brake light required. After you've added those you can get it converted to street legal and tagged. I will mention you must be a resident or have a business in TN. Also do a NICB vin check too see if it's hot or been titled before. If it's hot don't try it you will get charged for receiving stolen property, if it's been titled better hope you got it from the person the titles names in. I'd you have the extra $ dirt legal will do it for you, they wanted to charge $700 to do this for my 06 ttr230

  • @matthewhoopes7757

Arizona is stupid simple. You can street an old Big Red 3 wheeler! The DMV or even private DMV's never even look at the bike. Its up to you to make sure you're legal. Light, horn, brake lights and a mirror. Probably need hi and low beam but the reality is chances of getting checked for that is nil. Almost sure that you don't need turn signals. Can't say 100% but I'd bet $100 you don't.

If the objective to convert to street legal is to have: a headlight, tail light, brake light, license plate holder, license plate light, horn, and one rear view mirror, then I don't understand why state DMVs make life so hard on the public by mandating a 12 Volt battery, which requires a device to charge the battery. They need to get with the times and not enforce the old technology on us. Everything for a dirt bike conversion to street legal can be copied from cyclists. They instal rechargeable lithium battery powered head light, tail light, and a horn which are very loud, actually louder than some mopeds or street legal motorcycles. Same goes for their lights that are very bright, brighter than car head lights and they last for hours. For some reason local DMVs enjoy inflecting hardship on people. And that I find very frustrating.
I have a rechargeable lithium powered head light and tail light on my bicycle and they are brighter than motorcycle lights. I also have a rechargeable lithium powered horn which is louder than a motorcycle horn. Both the horn and head light are mounted on the handlebar for easy access. I also have a mirror mounted on the handlebar. The brake light can also be powered by lithium powered battery, it only requires a wire to be connected to one or both brakes.
