When the news broke that PRS was coming out with an SE version of the Silver Sky I hit up Sweetwater and asked for one to cover, thankfully they thought that was a good idea because Im honestly pretty stoked on many of the details of this guitar.

Don’t know if this has already been said, but PRS puts the name of the factory that their overseas models are made to give both credit and accountability to the people making them, which I think is pretty cool. 🤘🏻🤓
Yup, Cort makes pretty good guitars....
Exactly. My SE that I bought around 13 years ago was made by the World Musical Instrument Corp. out of Korea.
I love the cooler “erm, actually” combo you did at the end there.
Cor-Tek is a famously great manufacturer.
Recently, you have been a bit self-conscious about your playing when demo-ing guitars, but you don’t need to worry. Not all of us out here are manic shred-meisters craving the maximum number of notes per second. I like to hear nice easy chord sequences that tell me about tone, sustain and such, and you do that perfectly. Sometimes less is more.
How do you tell someone else they're self conscious about something? That's not even something you could know without someone specifically tell you that much.
Now you could theorize he feels that way. Or whatever you want to call it. But to come straight out and try and tell someone they're self-conscious about something when you can't know if they are unless they've specifically told you is pretty out there, IMO. 🤔
Vibes? Body language? Mildly self-deprecating comments?
I’m only at the assembly stage of the video here but it’s completely reasonable in general.
Hey.. Demo is a QC fail - saw a sweetwater tour vid where this was covered recently
@@JC-11111 Ryan has mentioned it several times in other videos, so I guess that is what Howard meant.
@@JC-11111 JC, I’m a fan of your comments, but lately you’ve seemed a bit self-conscious… don’t worry, your comments are always “your truth” and we respect your courage to just get out there and comment! (As I write this I realize I’m feeling a bit self-conscious, not knowing if you’ll realize it’s tongue in cheek.). By the way, have you ever seen the sequence of cartoons by Charles Schulz (Peanuts), in which Linus says that he is aware of his tongue, and then Lucy starts to become aware of her tongue?
The reverb and tremolo setting with this guitar absolutely hypnotic!
I've had my PRS Holcomb since 2017, and I have only just now realised that the soft case has a hanger in it thanks to your video.
AHahahahhahahahaha, shame bru
Watched this video well before I bought a Silver sky SE, and watched it after I just got one! Love your videos, and surf playing style. It’s definitely inspiring!
"The bird at the 7th fret" sounds like a nice b side tune.
One of the best demo's and reviews I've seen. Thank you
This guitar made you play outside of your "normal" licks. And I mean that in a nice way Ryan. The guitar sounds amazing and like you mentioned. It doesn't have that same strat quack. Great video as always!
uù uh hi
It's the quack we WANT😉
Love your reviews, Ryan 👍
You have a great way of describing what you’re experiencing as you go along.
I got one just like it today. It’s the only one they had at guitar center. Not crazy about the color but it’s growing on me. It is a unique , different guitar . I really like it . Been wanting one for months. Finally got it. Great review man. Appreciate you. Subscribed.
Something I have done with Guitar Center purchases, when they don't have the particular color I want, is to have them order the color you want online or over the phone. Then go back in with the one you bought and, because of their return policy, you can just swap the color you don't want for the one you do. I've done it recently, last month, with the Sterling Mariposa. I wanted Pueblo Pink, but they only had the surfy green/blue color.
The dragonfruit color is really neat, however, I can't see myself picking it over Evergreen or Moon white. I love the Evergreen man, it's fuckin tight. I can't wait to get one of these SS SE's
This is a good representation of not only the actual color but how the guitar sounds. I have the same exact guitar and color and it's more than I expected. In the past, the only Strat I really liked was the Jeff Beck Model. Yes, I've played the Eric Johnson and other Custom Shops but was never impressed, especially considering the price point. I put up a demo on this site and my 432Hz Universe Tom Aragon as well and the guitar only arrived yesterday. Also, I've never owned a PRS Either ...
Good Job !!
One thing I love about gig bags is it’s way easier to transport a guitar that way and go gigging but it also makes it way easier to sell the guitar and lighter and easier to pack and ship - not to mention the reduced shipping cost when it comes to weight of the package.
Brilliant fun review, love all your reviews! Keep it up! 🎶👍🎸
Now we just need to get PRS to make a Telecaster.
Bro, I have been thinking the same thing since they SE'd these Sky's. I love fender guitars more than anything, basically they have been all I've played since I started playing 15 years ago lmao. My first non Fender was an Ibanez AS73, cause I wanted a 335 type guitar but I don't like Gibson/Epiphone. Now, my next non-Fender will be one of these SS SEs lol. I fuckin love the colors available, I'm gonna have to do some hard decision making between Moon white and evergreen. I keep leaning evergreen cause I have buttercream Strats, which are v close to moon white, but I haven't been fortunate enough to grab a strat in British Racing Green. But luckily, Evergreen is a much different shade than British Racing, so I'll be cool to have both lol.
I can't imagine how fuckin sick a PRS T-style would be ...I'm really hoping these strat types sell like fuckin crazy and they want to do the guitar market a service and give us the Strats old pal, the Tele. Would love to see what they do for the bridge
Well have I got news for you, lol
@@MiketheNerdRanger hahahh
You’re in luck!
You’re in luck!
Why does no one ever talk about their collection of gig bags?
Gig bag lives matter!
i definitely appreciate your review. While enjoy Mayer's work (and being a deadhead, his work with dead & co), I had an internal mind-struggle that by purchasing this guitar (which I did prior to your vid), I'd be stereotyping myself into a Mayer-sound..-thing. This review really helped justify me buying based on the sound I've heard from independent creators such as yourself. Thank you for the review.
His work with Dead and Co is fantastic.
I might be in the minority here but I'm a huge JM fan. Love the color and the sounds of the guitar. Loved the surfy stuff you played. You laugh exactly like him, it's adorable.
same here! jm is my favorite artist.
@@stylesstephens The best guitar player since SRV! I love John MAYER since 2003! ;-)
John Mayer is an amazing artist.
Your not in the minority…anywhere
He’s a spectacular guitarist, great respect for John Mayer
THAT’s! A great review! Planning to get one of these guitars soon! It just is such an attractive guitar in looks and sound. ❤ And you made a great review of it!
how are you liking it? thinking of trading a couple of my lower end guitars for one
“I’m just a guy who likes guitars and started a RUclips channel”! Fantastic! Love it. Your channel is way cool. Keep on trucking.
Wow - for the price, those pickups sound amazing!
I think I’m your only subscriber that actually likes John Mayer. Cool review!
I'm his subscriber and I'm a mainly into metal. I appreciate Ryan's dedication to honesty, his tendency to not be afraid of holding unpopular opinions, and his ability to completely bash a guitar that is sub par. He will tell you directly what he likes and what he don't like, and I like that. The problem I have is that I have a very short attention span and he make very long videos, lmao.
(Edit: my point was to say it doesn't matter what music you like, as long as you like the reviewer)
Love the pups in the SS SE and that Dragonfruit color is growing on me. Can't wait till I can afford one (maybe by then they will be in stock ~ but the price will have gone up!). Great review ~ thanks!
Was able to get one from reverb, i too dont even like john mayer but the moment i heard these single coils in person i had to have it. Hated the color at first as well, now I absolutely can not take my eyes off of it. I hate that i love this guitar
I think the PRS Silver Sky SE is one of the nicest strat style guitars you can buy. I saw a review recently did where Mary Spender compared the $849 Silver Sky SE to her regular $2,649 Silver Sky. She said she found little difference to justify the much higher price. I love this dragonfruit color too.
Hey I think it’s great that from time to time you remind people that you’re just like us, that is the majority of us are people that like Guitars but we are not professionals. We’re somewhere on the big sliding scale of amateurs :-). I love the fact that you play so many clean tones because you love surf guitar.
Well damn. My gig bag has a hook, who knew? Thanks man, good review.
I bought the green silversky a couple months back and it is truly a thing of beauty. So many sweet tones
thanks for making everything clear since the beginning :)
Ryan, I'm a piss poor guitar player so i dont know good from bad, i love the sounds you make when you play and thats what keeps me coming back.
Really nice demo. Easy to write it off as another strat copy but I'm hearing tones that I've not heard from other strats. Nice colour too
even if it was just another strat, who cares? most brands have strat variations.
My Favorite video on this guitar by far. Just a dude enjoying the guitar and not doing the busy bee endless solo crap. Great vibe and spirit about you brother! God bless
Loved the demo Ryan. I even like the color. I myself may look at changing the guard colors but leave the knob and pickup covers. The truss rod cover I think would look good as the same color as the body. I'm intrigued about the 3x3 headstock and how you compare the tuning stability of it to a standard strat. Tuners smooth?
Probably the best guitar review I’ve ever watched. Kudos
I’m guessing this is the first guitar review you’ve ever watched ;-)
Nice unboxing and review! Your beard game is ON POINT, my dude!
I will never get over that fugly headstock on the beautiful strat body. With that said, I really like your reviews and personality you bring to your videos. Keep up the good work!
Prs headstock is so fn ugly
@@tomvice yeah it’s like a cheap Walmart headstock on a lawyer guitar.
I believe Dylan Talks Tone is going to mod his SE! Very cool guitar. I’m not really into Strats but I’d like to try one of these SE models at my local shop.
Every video I've watch gave this guitar great reviews. I really thought you were going to find something wrong with it...instead I now want one even more. It's a good thing they're out of stock. LOL
...and this hasn't given you pause for thought at all, has it?
That vibrato you have dialed in there is awe inspiring.
That bridge pickup has a bit of tele attack, i like it. Keep jamming the surf guitar , not enough people play it on the nets!
Congratulations! You managed to make that Blue Sky sound fantastic. You didn't overcook the overdrive, so both clean and dirty sounds were beautiful. I'm guessing th intonation was spot-on. Great job!

@@kyloren4849 you are responding to months old posts. I was kidding around. Then again I am not sure why this guy has so much gear when he seemingly has a passing hobby. God that guitar sounds like ass. Get a dinged up original one they are like 1200 every few days- with plastic cases it’s happening constantly. I see a dealer that calls them “reliced” lol. 800 bucks is way too much for a 3rd world instrument. I can’t believe this entry level rip off garbage costs more than my USA VG strat did in 08. These prices have gone nuts- PRS never go up in value unless they are like 5k such a bs brand. So shiney so boring. Rip off company buyer beware overpriced hot trash. I keep hearing the same riff over and over might help to learn more than 3. Palm mute sounds like a quarter falling down the stairs- tone strangled 😵. Out of tune as hell. Hell a Mexican strat costs this much now too let’s go branden.
I recently got a stone blue one. I love it. Excellent review. Thanks.
Ryan, great review. Don't change! Some guitarists just flash through scale after scale, and maybe I'm weird, but it doesn't sound like music?
Your beard is getting more and more luxurious. Looking good 👍
Sweet guitar want/needed one of those for awhile because you know a guitarist needs a new guitar once in awhile even though it a really a want. Any thanks for your videos ryan
I really like the stone blue, but am really hyped for the root beer barrels.
LOL
Excellent review and shows how different from a Strat it sounds, especially in the second posish, as Gregory Kochery would say. I miss the quack.
How does this compare in feel and playability to the SE 245 and the SE Starla? I know it's modeled after a strat but I find PRS to be easier for me to play.
New subscriber here, great review. I'm really torn whether to buy this $850 PRS silver sky or the full meal deal on at $2649, tough decision. Not being an accomplished guitarist it's tough to make a decision. If you're looking at your older videos it would be great to get your thoughts on this. Thanks for the fun video.
I had a set of GFS Texas Premiums in a Mexican strat once and I swear those pickups really remind me of those.
I had no idea that PRS gig bags had that hook thing! Had to go check for myself and my mind was blown
NICE demo ! Thanks for the surf sounds ! I've been playing pro 51+ years, over 10,000 gigs. Play a red sparkle Mexican Strat with Mojotone Quiet Coil 67 pups, and just bought a demo SE Silver Sky for $611 at Sweetwater, rosewood fretboard and "Piano Black" finish, plus comes with a Graph Tech nut.. Thinking of getting a gold sparkle pickguard to dress it up. May have to replace the bridge pickup if it's too "edgy"... The Mojotones are sweet, warm and QUIET ! It arrives in 4 days...
Great review. Positive but not just plain gushing over it. Appreciate it.
Hey brother! Thanks for the video. Would you take this over your player plus green strat?
You just sold this guitar to me! I was on the fence and I am glad I found your review!
Wow, the color fits well with your surf blue amp.
Sweetwater does a full set up on every guitar over $299. So yeah im sure they set it up. I think in this case 'demo' meant that this is the one they had out for photos and filming for their own channel.
@@60CycleHumcast I must correct this item, Sweetwater sent me an $1100 Fender Vintera with NO SETUP.
Not a JM fan and I bought the same one. I love the color and the guitar is fantastic. The attention to detail beats my Fender Player Strat, especially with regard to the fretwork. I was rather disappointed with the Fender, but since it was a prize guitar, I couldn't send it back and I felt bad about complaining.
Learn some basic fretworking and dressing and you can buy Squiers and be just as happy.
@@KelticKabukiGirl I did.
@@gathda ohh! Well, I guess I am less picky. The newest video on my half assed for now channel is me shredding a $75 Glarry orange strat I did a light fret polish to and that's it. I don't know if it's because I have been playing since 89 or what, but I like to spend more on pedals than guitars.
"...just a hobby player like you..." :-) Well, you certainly have WAY more hobby pedals and hobby amps than I do (I assume you own all that stuff behind you) - which makes me feel better about my non-stop researching and buying stuff. I like what you do, and thanks!!
Man you got the nice surf tunes . . . plus thanks for good coverage . . . hey, I noticed you keep tuning it during the vid. No other SS SE video shows this. Is this cuz the trem bridge action + you luv alt tunings? Or does this have the classic Gibson problem of needing to retune every song? Or expert luthier to dive in and fix 4 ya kinda scenario? I have heard about strats going out tune in trem action but I don't own a strat (mainly acoustic player). Thanks
It’s because it was new out of the box and the strings were breaking in. Also I don’t edit out tuning in any of my videos. It’s been a very tuning stable guitar after breaking in the strings.
No one who plays a Les Paul plays like the guitarist Les Paul. Ed O’Brian from Radiohead played a Eric Clapton strat but didn’t sound like Clapton. Sometimes a signature guitar is just useful because it has good features, not because you like the artist.
John Mayer himself started out and used for the longest time a SRV signature strat and he sounds very different than Stevie.
Well said!!
some guitarists and bassists don't even use their signature guitar 😂
m.ruclips.net/video/mKWyHe5wY5Q/видео.html
Is this what it’s like to sound “very different than Stevie”?
Yea, and he dumbed down his own guitar by releasing this SE junk..
About the plastic... It comes on the raw sheet that they buy to cut out the pick guards. They don't apply the plastic. They just cut through it and leave it on the entire time for protection.
I just got mine and it fits me like a glove--or as you say "melts into you."
Nice review, how does it stack up against your players plus strat ?
Love your video, great personality lots of little laughs, earned a sub from me and a like, and your playing is great!
Hey!
Is it (technical) possible to replace the PRS silversky neck with an Fender Strat replacement neck?
Yes got to get my hands on one of these.
The fret work on these looks so much better than MIM player strats. But if there’s one thing I’ve taken from this review is that I love that reverb pedal! 😁
That's funny my player strat frets are perfect and so is my son's player strat
I have a SE Custom 24 and a player Strat, the frets on my SE are like glass, my Strat frets are fine, but even visually you can see the SE frets have had much more attention. And I'm with you on that reverb, it sounds glorious
Do you think the wiggle stick bridge system stays in tune any better than a Fender?
imo tuning issues typically come from the nut more than the bridge, but i do really like this bridge and i think its rock solid.
Every PRS I have owned Se or S2 the bridge/whammy is smooth and great neck!
I was super excited when there were root beer barrels in my last Sweetwater order!
As Johnny Cochran once said, " If it doesn't quack, it's not a Strat" or something like that.
I initially thought these would be made out of solid Wantronium and that I'd sell my Vintera 70's hardtail and 1996 Robert Cray strat to get one. But they made the nut narrower than the core SS and the radius flatter. My MIM strats are both 1.65" width, and the Vintera is 7.25" radius. Switching to 8.5" and 1.61" for my meaty fingers would be difficult.
I still might. Or I might save up for the core SS.
Look at G&L's Indonesian strat copies. Far superior, half the price.
@Alec Mullaney interesting. Superior or different? Just curious.
Great demo man. Not a JM fanboy but this thing sounds amazing and for the money. Imma get one. I WANT ONE
Speaking of "artist models", I highly recommend the Robert Cray stratocaster, one of the few (only?) hardtail (no wang bar) models still in production. I got my slightly used version on Reverb for ~$900 w/gig-bag and shipping. FWIW the "Tonequest Report" creator-publisher, David Wilson (excellent writer, perhaps the best in this field?), recommended this model no less than THREE times over the years. He bought three different versions from various years, and is keeping the latest acquisition. His were older versions, and mine is from a couple years ago - I think the necks on newer versions aren't as chunky...? I'm just guessing, but kept hearing about how chunky they are, and mine is not chunky, although not "slim" either, rather a nice medium C-taper, well rounded as I like them. It's light weight (7lbs. 2oz.), the beautiful silver finish is thin, and the Indian rosewood fretboard is dark. The most striking feature is the pickups, which are perhaps the best sounding stratocaster pickups I've ever heard. The neck and middle have un-bevelled staggered magnets, while the bridge pickup has flat magnets, and seems to sound more like a telecaster than stratocaster bridge pickup. The pickups are more jumbo than medium ("medium-jumbo" is a useless description - it can mean different things), the radius is 9 1/2". This is probably a wasted comment that will never get seen, but if you see it my friend - please feature a Robert Cray strat in the future maybe? I'm not very familiar with his music, but do like his guitar playing, and I Love this strat. The made in Mexico version is the guitar I'm talking about, not the custom shop version, which is different. The Silver Sky sounds good, but is it better than a Robert Cray strat.....?
You can order fixed bridge strata through the Fender Mod shop with all kinds of options (color, necks, pickups, tuners). Only slightly more expensive then a retail American Professional model.
#4 position! I love it. I just ordered this guitar!!!
A big neon 60 cycle hum sign would look awesome on the blue wall to your left 👌🏻
This is the first video of yours I watched in a while. Captain blondebeard in the house! Lookin good dude
I agree… the sticky plastic is a pain plus it often interferes with the function of the pot controls by making turning the knobs slightly harder ond changing the way they feel.
I hate having to pop the tone knob off to get the plastic off.
When my company sells a guitar we score around pots (before installing knobs) and jack and switches with an exacto. Plastic comes off super easy.
Just got my SE today. So far so good.... but a dumb QC issue. The red wire for the jack was wrapped around inside the jack, and it was preventing the lead cord from from being inserted. It took me 30 sec to remove the jack and correct it. But it obviously had not been checked.
I wonder if after market Strat pickups and trems would fit?
A nice, thorough review
Would love to see Fender do a take off of a PRS double cutaway with a Fender headstock to see how PRS likes them apples.
Methinks old Paul wouldn’t be too pleased about that. I believe fender headstock would make the PRS look better.
Fender can’t even get their own guitars right let alone a brand new (to them) design lol
Who cares? As long as it isn't an exact replica, it's just one more option to choose from. I honestly have no idea why people made such a big deal about this guitar. What is so bad about PRS/Mayer collaborating on an S-style guitar? I don't get it.

Can anyone take a moment to coment on neck radius?
I believe this neck is 8.5, is that a huge difference from 12-in and also up to 14 in. What are the benefits and what are some thoughts on the differences. I don't have any experience these. I have a Mexican player strat which I believe is 9.25. would I notice a difference between the previous stated radiuses? I know it is been said that a flat radius is better for faster playing but doesn't everybody want the ability to play faster if need be?
Thanks.
Player strats are 9.5 so 8.5 would feel pretty much the same, you would notice a 12 coming from a 9.5 but in my experience it's not too hard to get used to
It’s more a matter of taste than fast playing. Notes can choke out on big bends (though I’ve never had that problem) on lower radii’.
You won’t really notice a difference between 8,5 and 9,5.
Like you I don’t even know what John Meyer plays but I saw them guitars and I wanted one , it’s currently on order waiting for SweetWater to let me know when to expect it :)
Did you ever get it?
We can't deny that these are great looking and great sounding guitars. That being said the neck on these is THICCCCCCCC.
Best prs ever imo. I honestly am not a prs fan and really loved playing the silver sky se. Didnt want to stop playing. Really dont want to go get one. But........

The finish reminds me of raspberry sherbet. Wasn't feeling this one until you put a little dirt on it. Sounds fantastic.
I'd be curious to see you review the Nick Johnston Schecter strat now! I think it's about the same price as this.
Is there an option for a CBS era big head stock?
I bought the same color one from Sweetwater and I am loving it! Set up perfect and a gig bag included! This guitar is a bargain so get it while you can.
$1K for an Indonesian strat copy is not a bargain. G&L make a strat copy with USA made pickups for half the price.
I'm already familiar with PRS quality.
IMHO, the DF body color is good,
though I dislike the grey on the TR cover & tuner knobs as it doesn't match anything else on the rest of the guitar,
How is the SS Se compared to say one of the Roasted Maple neck Sterling CT50s?
Dude, your beard is getting mighty epic!!!!
I've found one gets EITHER the root beer barrel OR the fireball, but NOT BOTH! In these environs, the fireball is preferred...
Root beer barrel all the way 🍺

My favorite Sweetwater candy is the honey one (edit: Bit O Honey)
@@keithbriscoe99 Sort of an aside, through an error, when I bought a guitar from Sweetwater last fall, two were shipped. While working-out the return of the "extra" axe, I, in jest, asked if I could please keep the candy that came with the second, mistakenly shipped, guitar. My sales engineer, Logan Miller, said, "of course." What a win, one guitar, TWO bags of candy (both with the coveted fireball!). I loves me some Sweetwater and Logan.
