- This will be our last vlog from New Zealand for a while as we take a break to enjoy some quality family time together before we go away on our first overseas trip since 2020!
Our day started at the iconic and popular Mount Eden (Maungawhau) volcano summit which has brilliant panoramic views of Auckland city.
We then headed over to KIIN, a thai restaurant in Mt Eden for some delicious and jumbo-sized lunch. We love Thai cuisine, and this place serves up authentic and very tasty Thai food.

Eden Garden was our next stop. A peaceful spot which is run by a not-for-profit organisation.

We then drove all the way over to Clevedon in East Auckland to do a hike up the stairway to heaven at Clevedon Scenic Reserve. Going anti-clockwise on the track seemed to be a slightly easier route with well spaced steps that weren't quite as steep as those if beginning on the clockwise Totara track instead. It takes roughly 40 minutes to reach the summit lookout and then about another 30 mins coming back down to complete the loop.

Neither of us have been to Florida but it's definitely on our bucket list. We're a Harry Potter crazed family so one day we have to visit just for Harry Potter world hahaha.

A while since been to Eden Gardens - went during camelia time which is lovely. Turkey is unreal you will love it (although I went in 80s so long time ago). Must see Goreme in Capadocia - is like the moon. Also the usual places like Ephesus is a must see. Lots of brilliant ruins in Turkey & great food too!

Thanks Leah! It was busier than we thought it might be when we left for Turkey a few days ago! Our Singapore flights were both full too. Airport was definitely not precovid busy but not super empty either. It was however pretty slow at check in coz I guess they have more things to check for passengers now document-wise etc!

Hi guys. Will be fun so see your videos from Turkey. I was there in 2013. Amazing country. I can recomend the Cappadocia region, with it's amazing rock formations and hidden ancient cities. And the city Konya with the Mevlana museum and the "whirling dervishes". Just amazing. I hope to visit NZ again in a few months. Will definitly put Eden Garden to my list. Thanks for sharing.

nice! I enjoyed Cappadocia when I was in Turkey - try to get the hot air balloons - we had no luck but apparently it's great fun! also loved the salt terraces at Pammukale, and the Hagia Sofia! Also, enjoy your family time!

I haven’t been to eden garden since doing our wedding photos there back in 1990. It truly is a little gem in the middle of the city. I feel a bit guilty for not going back now

Oh yeah that stairway actually looks so cool! So cool how you find these things to see and do! Phew your last vlog...for a while! Haha! Yeah that would have been crazy almost stuck overseas when COVID-19 started back then! Great to hear you have family returning here, bet you can't wait to see them! Oh wow Turkey, even then it has a food theme for Peter! Haha! Wow yeah though first overseas trip since the pandemic yeah be epic! I am still branching out in NZ travel which I am happy with! Thanks guys! Nah this trip will be just spending as long as we can to go around seeing Turkey. If we had more time we would've added other countries but we need to return to NZ for our friend's wedding so we just wanna get as much Turkey experience as we can during this short trip 🙂

I visited Istanbul when I was 20, but that is over 20 years ago. The scale of the city is hard to fathom.
Will you communicate a little more on your itinerary? I can ask a Turkish friend (living here in Belgium) if she has any tips for you if I know what regions you'll be visiting.
Spent the last wee while planning and the itinerary is pretty much all of turkey hahaha...
Istanbul, Cappadocia, ankara, trabzon, Antalya, pamukalle, Ephesus, various cities along the coast line and other small places along the way. If your friend knows any hidden gems not well known to tourists that'll be awesome 👌

I am conflicted... On one hand am so pleased you are both going to get to spend some quality time with your family, on the other hand. Am going to miss your videos. I hope that you both enjoy your trip to Turkey. I was lucky in lots of ways as when I did my world traveling, things where not as they are now. A lot of places I went too, simply either now dont exist / too badly damaged / destroyed or are way too dangerous to even consider going too. (yes I realise am giving away am ancient lol) There is only two countries have not been too and still hope to get to them... You enjoy your travels both of you keep safe and well and look forward to your next wonderful video :)
Sounds like you've been on a lot of amazing adventures Greg 😁 you're totally right the world's changed a lot and from our research it seems a lot of magnificent places around the world aren't what they used to be. But on the flip side there are a beauty's that have only opened more recently too like the hooker Valley trail in New Zealand or the terracotta warriors in Xian China.
If you had to pick your 3 favorite places that you've been to what do you think you'd choose?

@@PeterandYen Ohhh 3 Fav now that's tough...... I guess one you wont or probably wont know is the Tiger Balm Gardens in Singapore... The original one not the one now it is not the original as has been changed. That was amazingly beautiful, Also Cardboard City again in Singapore, it was unique... But sadly the original Tiger Balm Gardens no longer exists. 2. The next lot am going to put all together and once say you will then understand why lost and that is Syria, Iraq the timeless beauty in the buildings. The history has all gone granted some has been saved but mostly gone and besides that those countries are no longer what I would call safe to visit. for Number 3 The Azure Window was lucky enough to see that beautiful structure. Before nature claimed it./ Leaning Tower of Pisa, When saw it you could climb it (the stairs were brutal simply because of the angles was dfficult ) now you can see it but, not allowed to climb it. But there is so many wonderful things. Travel now is so much easier than it ever used to be. And, I have to say for a lot of places it is the sheer number of tourists going there which has in lots of ways destroyed so many places. Even in our own backyard. Take Queenstown for example. From my perspective it is nothing like used to be. The hills surrounding Queenstown used to be hills, not houses, you had likes of the Bottle House, Kelvin Heights had deer. It has gone from a serene place of beauty. To one now overcrowded with tourists and charging a fortune that no kiwi can easily afford......Nature has had to give way to making a dollar or in Queenstowns case several dollars. As far as the Terracotta Warriors go you can only see a very small fraction of the total uncovered The rest are secured and out of bounds.
I hope that you both have a wonderful and safe trip to Turkey, It was a lovely and beautiful country when i was there many moons ago. Full of history and beauty. But the advent of terrorist groups has made it not quite so safe in certain areas. So do be careful there!!!!!
EDIT: I will point out that the Tiger Balm Gardens in Singapore (which is one of three originally built in three seperate cities. The original and first one in Hong Kong has been long closed) does exist today..... what I was meaning is that this one now is not the original one in all it's glory. But, it is still beautiful and well worth a visit if there.
@@nzcyclone Thank you for sharing all this. I ended up loading up a Google images screen to check out the tiger balm gardens and the cardboard city in Singapore. They look very cool and seem to depict Chinese history in almost a pop culture cartoonish way. Need to put that on our bucket list for sure.
When I was talking about places we unfortunately cannot visit anymore Syria was exactly the country I was thinking. What a shame... Yemen is another one as I would absolutely love the chance to see the blood dragon trees.
When news broke out of the Azure window being reclaimed I was also very saddened along with the notre dame fire. Two places we will never get the joy of seeing for ourselves. It sounds like you have been on so many amazing adventures... you must have so many fond memories?
I totally agree that there should be a good balance between tourism and conservation of treasures. It's a hard one... cause I understand it from both points.
Very much looking forward to exploring the historical sites of Turkey. The entire Anatolian region is so rich with incredible structures and stories. As someone who loves classical history especially this is going to be such a joy. Yes will try to stay as safe as possible :) thanks Greg.
@@PeterandYen You are very welcome. Take Singapore for example ... The first and second time there it was dirty. everything stunk really badly.... Now it is so clean and so very lovely... So yes, progress can be good as long as is done in moderation and keeping in tune with the culture. Afterall if you loose the Culture you have lost what in my opinion makes it special. I love the history, When i travel I search and look for the history to try and find out as much as can. Notre Dame have been there several times before the fire... When i watched that on TV my heart withered at the thought of all that beauty all that history gone... even if not gone will be severely fire damaged...
Yes, I too can understand both sides... But I guess what should always be put front and foremost is ... What do the tourists come here to see? if it is the landscape then that is what must be protected at all costs... If it is say a waterway or a building... whatever it is must be protected NOT "enhanced" if that means limitation on numbers then so be it.... moreso when something is historical as once gone... it is gone forever.
The only sad thing about all my travels when was younger is... It was not like nowadays where you have cellphones and cameras... in those days it was film and actual photos.... so have very very very few... I only have the memories inside....
A lot of places now it simply is not worth the risk for various reasons not just wars... and that is even assuming you can get health insurance to go there which is highly unlikely....
One of the first things have always done when arrived in a new town or city when traveling and that was in the hotel staying at... two of the first things I ask the reception staff is. 1. What areas do you advise NOT to go to at all? Which ones can during day but not at night? and 2. What transport do you recommend to use and what ones do you recommend not to use at all? and laters I will ask them do you recommend someone can talk to about local history who can give me pointers etc etc.....

hi guys, my sunday or monday sunshine will be missing for a few weeks but so pleased for you to start traveling again , i have been to turkey about eight times ,i am sure you will enjoy it . if you get the chance to go to a place called Oludeniz and Fethiye or even Side .you will enjoy it there but i think Istanbul will keep you well occupied ,try some of their stews , and they also make some ok ice cream ,and if you can get the real home made stuff the sellers sometimes play tricks on you with the ice cream, but mind you i have not been there for almost 25 years so like everywhere else in the world it has changed i guess, you just take care over there ok have a fun time and i await with baited breath for your vlogs about it

5:04 Hi From Bangkok. Wow Thai food so expensive there. Same 2 dishes buy on the street here NZD6:00 or at cheap restaurant NZD9:00. Admittedly portion size will be smaller. Pete's meal they call one plate meal (จานเดียว) typically for someone eating on their own or not sharing whereas Yen's dish would be eaten together with other dishes when sharing with friends. It's sorta strange how Asian restaurants overseas have conformed to the western doctrine of dining out = one dish eaten by only one person.
😅 yes unfortunately food in New Zealand is quite expensive. It is a shock even to us when we return from overseas. Having been to Thailand a few times now not a good idea to compare or you will feel sad hahaha.

I used to walk up here with my girlfriend and go visit the gardens as well. One night we were going to the summit and a car drove up an embankment and overturned onto it's roof. We had to go help the driver and passenger out of it. They were ok by the way.

Hi again Yen 🙂👋 I believe we covered your first 2 questions already in your other comment on our other video but as for the last one, it really depends on what you like to do! The North Shore is nice, lots of beaches around but staying in the city centre (Auckland CBD) is also handy if you're wanting that vibe and the tourist attractions plus waterfront harbour etc (although there is a lot of road and construction at the moment so might be a bit annoying). Having a rental car is great though as you can stay basically anywhere and get around easily. West Auckland has a lot of nice nature too (but you'll be far from other attractions) so central and central suburbs are convenient in terms of driving so you're not too far from anywhere.
