I think critics back then were too old-school. They refused to enjoy Mariah's virtuosity and preferred to call it oversinging. Mariah never oversings, she is musicality made woman. She never does things to a song which do not belong there or don't fit the music, rythm, tone, etc. Mariah's mom was an opera singer after all. She inherited her musical appreciation and technique. Vocal coaches today love her because what she does has been so impactful on the music business that it is no longer a rarity but the rule, and she is the gold standard.

Héctor Bello this is a great comment, and so on point. They didn’t like how she created her own style, and decided to use the fact that she was gaining popularity so quickly as a means to tear her down and not really look deeply into her music.

Cody Walsh absolutely! Her songwriting has also been looked down upon. I think her songwriting has a very feminine quality to it, if there is such a thing. Yet she has that capacity to connect to millions through her songs. Critics are too biased most of the time.

I find that Mariahs voice is very detailed. After following her singing myself and emulating her every tone I have actually learned this to be true. I dont believe a lot of people really and truely understand vocal technique alone so when u hear someone like Mariah Carey you have people who dont like her because they dont understand her vocal type and other who just adore her every vocal. Some people say she does runs too much, whistles too much, and they still expect her to punch every note 24/7 as belty as she can. That really not how vocal cords work. Mariahs are very delicate yet powerful. Her vocal nodules have both been a blessing and curse for her. I think she is one of the hardest vocalists to emulate period and she is and outstanding artist/songwriter/actress. I Love Mimi. I'm grateful for anything she gives the music world. Shes phenomenal and a blessing to this world and the music industry.

For me when i try to sing her song i have to sing it with my true voice otherwise the song will never be completed. You know true voice for most people it is not all pleasant to listen to. But thank god for such a voice of hers for it is so different absolutely. She can show so many shades and depth at low and high through her voice.

There’s no need to defend Mariah Carey’s singing. You have to remember that when she started melisma (riffs and runs) were considered over singing. It was around but not used in the way that she had done. She made it sound so easy to do within a short span of a few bars and made it not only pleasing but common enough for us not to notice as much. When Christina Aguilera came out, she was also called an over singer.
Today it’s everywhere. It’s almost lesson 2 melisma. It’s like you must have it today.
Don’t trash this opera singer please.

I think her cover was masterful. I feel she completely hit the nail on the head with the meaning of the song. It literally feels like she is giving her all in telling the person that she loves them. She can’t live. That’s a big statement and to sing this song softly and monotoned feels half assed to me. Careless. “I can’t live if living is without you...I don’t really mean it so I’ll say it quietly...” boring. Her version is like a yell. A scream. A reach for the other person. I think it shows total emotion. Far more than the original one. Like the original HAD to recorded where’s Mariah’s version was deliberately recorded. I’m pretty sure during this recording of the song she said “this was always my favorite song as a little girl and it used to make me cry” no way she’d go up there just to show off and “miss the point”.

    • @Alebabe
      @Alebabe Год назад

I 100% agree and second this and this is exactly what Ive been saying to all those ppl saying she missed the point by showing off. Showing off?? Just because her voice can do more than others and the way she expresses with it is higher and better doesnt mean shes showing off, her voice itself its a show off against any other voice but because is such a rare and unique instrument, if anything she emotes this somg better then the original and thats why she takes it to another level and gets so many ppl around the world connect with her version, after hers theres no one elses, and thats how masterful her version is.

Well according to 30 million people who bought Music Box and made Without You one of the biggest songs of the 90s, I guess most of us do not think it's "a joke" (as opposed to the critic's remark at the end). This song as a cover\ remake has is by far more depth and emotion than the original. I guess the audience around the world and the listeners alike know how to recognize someone phenomenal who takes this song to a whole new level and puts it in its own league.

I think there are people that understand melisma and one's that don't. For people like Mariah that have mastered it's use, it's placement in a melody and it's use to tell a story, they do what white classical singing could never achieve; freedom of personal expression. Classical singing is about doing exactly what sheet music tells you to, loyalty to the composer. But some cultures see music differently. Gospel music and those of some Asian cultures really exploit all aspects of the voice; the good, the bad and the ugly to tell human stories. And I think people that criticise the use of melisma fail to understand singing that isn't singing by numbers.

I love videos like this. I think many "music experts" don't take Mariah Carey seriously nowadays because of the diva persona and songs like "Touch My Body" - but it's nice when someone who has the vocabulary & expertise of music theory can break down why exactly Mariah's talent is so special. The vocal acrobatics are impressive but it takes more than that to really have the success she's had and touch so many people with her music. At the end of the day, it's literally the sound of her voice. There's an inherent melodic and musical nature to her voice - like an instrument. And what greater, more unique & pure instrument is there than the human voice? She's a natural storyteller through her voice, which makes her very different from the average pop star or even pop icon.

Classical or Pop, Mariah Carey is one of the very best singers ever heard. The thing about singers in the Classical World is that, though many purveyors of opera adopt the attitude that, somehow, their art-form is superior, in fact; they are SUPER-SUPER-CONFORMIST.

This is a great cover. It's rare an artist can 'steal' an already classic song and make it their own. I don't think Mariah was over singing at all at this stage - infact I think her style is beautifully measured on 'Without You'. Maybe around 'Butterfly' i started noticing what I felt were vocal over embelishments and as a singer she never quite recovered the purity and simplicity of her earlier albums, but she remains a brilliant and unique vocalist regardless.

How many view does Nillson have? How many view does Mariah have? I think it’s clear which version the people prefer.

I actually think the "big treatment" Mariah gave the song in the end actually enhances the emotions and sentiments portrayed in the lyrics perfectly. The despair, the heartache, the hurting so much you just wanna scream...her interpretation showed that better than any other renditions, IMO.
To me, it is the ultimate version of this song.
The intimacy you claimed it lacked, was portrayed in the verses of the song where she sung lower and soft.
But as the song went on the feeling of despair grew stronger and stronger culminating in the climax towards the end where she lets loose, like it was too much to bear.
To me, the way she interpreted the lyrics and arranged the song portrayed the feeling just perfectly.

  • @galimatias

The real amazing thing with Mariah is that she does all those vocal acrobatics and it’s always so melodic and seamless and truly beautiful, the notes are abundant and just flow naturally, it’s really special, there’s no one like her, maybe Ariana has a bit of that too, but all the other big vocalists who also have the capacity to do those melismas and acrobatics, Céline, Whitney, Christina, Aretha, Adele, Beyonce, etc they often tend to overdo it, or sometimes it just doesn’t go anywhere, some notes can be off. There’s also often a impression of them just showing off. Not Mariah, she’s truly superior to everyone else in that aspect. Now what she’s really lacking of, it is a capacity to really interpret a song, to really add meaning and depth to the words, to empathize them, to tell a story, there’s something about her voice and her way of singing that just doesn’t work in that aspect, she could sing a sad song or a joyful one, her voice doesn’t change, it doesn’t become darker or more joyful or hopeful or fearful or whatever - she doesn’t have those colors in her voice, that’s a talent that Céline and Whitney for example do have, Céline even more than Whitney in my opinion, and that’s even more impressive when English isn’t even her first language. They’re also on a higher level when it comes to belting, Mariah can belt, but they can REALLY belt, Whitney especially has the upper hand, there’s something more refined about her belts when Celine’s are bit more crude. Great voices with different strengths!

    I agree with Catherine.
I am truly a Mariah fan. Her style is so special and the impact in music is inmense, in actual singers..etc
But sometimes less is more. Less ornated and just soul without embellishment.
When I'm down I feel more connected to Hero song than Without you by Mariah. But I LOVE to listen to Mariah's music and LEARN from her. I love her music. She is my favourite singer and Monica Naranjo.
