I agree as well! Have been saying this for years! Mariah especially has really laid the groundwork for all future signers to come after here! Almost every singer that came after her has some sort of Mariah element in their voice in the sense of Melisma, runs and rifs, belting etc…. For example, Arian Grande was inspired by Mariah and so many signers that came after Ariana imitate Ariana Grande not even knowing that Ariana was inspired by Mariah! Mariah does melisma without it seeming like melisma. It's so amazing how intricate all her melodies are, not only with riffs, runs and melisma in general, but also register switching. I very much respect Beyoncé, but even though she is like a robot (perfectly executing all her riffs), the subtlety and musicality of Mariah's runs are above all other singers I've ever heard. She is almost superhuman.

It's an anatomy-thing. Mariah has a natural husky tone. To recreate it, you are on the right track but it would indeed be like an intentional cough. And that is not good for your voice.

I also really appreciate your mention of Mariah being an accomplished, talented songwriter, which she is. She reminds me of Maria Callas because of her absolute commitment to vocal quality and integrity and because she pushes herself to get the most out of her vocal ability. I'm not a vocal coach or expert but I don't think there is another modern-day singer with such an impeccable, powerful, controlled range as Mariah's. I love every song of hers, some more than others, but, with that voice, she can never go wrong.

The only singer that has ever happened to was Julie Andrews over 30 years ago and thousands of nodule removals are done daily. It’s fine if she doesn’t wanna risk it, but she stop performing live anymore because it embarrasses me for her. She could get almost all her range back if she did it. Some of her whispery techniques could change but not much else.

Did you notice how John Henny had to defend her again and again? The massive amount of critics througout her outstanding career makes me sad beyond words. It hit me real hard when comparing this vocal reaction video to millions of other videos of that kind on YT. I'm not a lamb, but PLEASE leave this ICON alone! Anyone with ears next to their brain and a heart filled with love and understanding in their cheast should realise that Mariah will always be in a league of her own and a blessing to music. The only singer that has ever happened to was Julie Andrews over 30 years ago and thousands of nodule removals are done daily. It’s fine if she doesn’t wanna risk it, but she stop performing live anymore because it embarrasses me for her. She could get almost all her range back if she did it. Some of her whispery techniques could change but not much else.
