  • Liszt: Mephisto Waltz no 1 arranged and played by Nathan Milstein?
This recording was given to me by a colleague over 15 years ago, and I've hesitated to upload it until now as the only proof I have that it is Milstein playing is my colleagues word. He told me it was recorded when Milstein was in his late 70s or possibly even his early 80s, towards the very end of his performing career. That is all the information he had. Having listened to it many times, I personally have no doubt that it is him playing, but I add a question mark at the end of my title, in case anyone does, or can prove otherwise. Either way, it is a sensational piece of violin playing that needs to be heard....enjoy!

Yes, this is Milstein playing- is it from one of his Ann Arbor, MI recital in the mid 1980s, not sure? But I did hear him perform this in the early 80's and was there with the late Jacob Krachmalnick, U of M violin professor, former concertmaster of Philadelphia and great personal friend of Nathan Milstein.
Milstein had not published his transcription but was constantly adjusting it-it sounded different every time he performed this work. The Ann Arbor recital may have been his first public performance of this Liszt transcription. Backstage Krachmalnick and I were with him, and Milstein said "You know Jake-y, this piece was Really Meant for the Violin. Whoever heard of the Devil playing a Piano ! But I must make 'amputation' ! the piece is too long ! " Any of my colleagues from Milstein's MasterClasses in Zurich will recall hearing him say these funny expressions, like "make amputation" instead of saying "make a cut" - Nathan Milstein's native tongue of course was Russian, though he spoke perfect English, and was fluent in French, and German. What a Gift to the violin world. What a Master Violinist, Musician, and Artist...I miss him very much. Thank you for posting this.

I almost gave up hope to hear this again.
I was lucky enough to attend his recital in Paris in 1983 when he performed this piece. Never heard it again 'till today .
    Unbelievable.
This recital remains the most thrilling concert in my life.
    Unforgettable.

When I was a teenager, I learned that Milstein's proudest transcription was Mephisto Waltz. Ever since then, I've been looking for a recording of him playing it. I've never found it, of course, because he never recorded it. After a while I gave up. The only recording of any violinist playing it was Ruggiero Ricci, and I have the recording. I would give a part of my either arm to hear all of the recital: PLEASE, PLEASE upload it for us?

  • @ernstschliephake522
    @ernstschliephake522 3 года назад +14

For sure this is Nathan playing!! I was with Ruggiero Ricci the old days, a longtime friendship between us. Ricci also played Mephisto and called it (similar to Milsteins own words) as the hardest piece ever. Ruggiero told me about the famous Nupen film: when Nathan was talking about the fact, that his friend Ruggiero played that piece: Nupen cut that passage from the film!
So this performance of Milstein is an amazing document, thanks so much for sharing! Greetings

This is an amazing treasure, thank you so much. I went to his masterclasses three times, and once a (I think Finnish) violinist came to play this to him who must have had a recording and written it down to paper from it, as Milstein never published it. Milstein was very surprised, and flattered that somebody made so much effort to copy out the music and play it. Like with everything he played, he took it like a very serious piece of music, not just as a virtousic showpiece (as the student played it at first). Absolutely no doubt it's him, and thankfully an amazing recording quality too! Amazing that there are still unknown Milstein recordings and sometimes even videos trickeling in on youtube over the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I wonder whether we were at a Milstein masterclass at the same time. That Finnish violinist -- was it Benita Nordell? That would have been in 1983. I was there one other time, in 1987. That's when he realized he could no longer play low notes with his 1st finger, and this ended his career. A sad moment, actually. All other aspects of his playing were still marvelous. And what was that name of that strange rich Swiss man who financed the masterclass and tried to dominate the proceedings?

I've returned to listen again to my private Violin Mentor, following Mr. Heifetz, *Nathan Milstein, reputedly playing his own
arranged/added to NM exquisite "Mephisto for Solo Violin" - hearing such bumpiness in the bowing which is NOT Milstein.
I request many here to read my Reply just below. Listen not with your admiration of the Real Milstein, but to This which is
a good try but Not Nathan Milstein. It is not the version of "Mephisto" that my mentor, Nathan Milstein, shared with me &
in London, at his home in Chester Square. We met in London in September 1968, via Sascha Lasserson, a close friend/
Leopold Auer St. Petersburg Class classmate, who was the authentic Assistant to Leopold Auer, who dragged me, his JH
RX'd to study with Lasserson pupil in London on my Fulbright Fellowship to a surreal experience meeting Nathan Milstein!
I was charmed by the Milstein In Person personae, so welcoming and gracious also inviting me to come round to his new
home in Chester Square, knowing from Mr. Lasserson, I was 1 of 7 original pupil's of Jascha Heifetz, & for naysayers on
here go to my Jascha Heifetz Violin Master Class film-Khachaturian, JH-7, Elisabeth Matesky {Rus vers. Library Master
    Performers} 28:44 min here on RUclips since Spring 2011. I know 'Mephisto Waltz' of Composer, Franz Liszt, for Piano;
yet also know Mr. Milstein's 'Obsession" which took him 3 years + to not transcribe yet *redesign the devilish Liszt most
difficult "Mephisto Waltz" of acclaim and which Mr. Milstein's "Musical Brother", Vladimir Horowitz, played so incredibly,
Nathan Milstein determined to make this bedeviled piece available for Violinists to come after him ... Being a close friend
of the Milstein Family, I was told he was 'driving all of us crazy working on "Mephisto' for the violin and for 3 Years!" One
is shocked by many here thinking -believing a person unknown to me claiming the person who gifted him this particular
performance said "it is Nathan Milstein playing his own 'Mephisto' for Solo Violin'! It is Not and I know this due to my
mentor, Milstein, and close friend of 24 years from Sept. 1968 to December 21, 1992, upon his passing, told me and
also shared his added sketches to 'Mephisto" which you do Not Hear on here because this is Not Nathan Milstein's
signature artistry with a rugged bow at the Frog and yes, many arggiated passages but w/difficulty in tossing them
off which NM Never had being a complete Master of the Left hand with a sort of Chanel Suit seamless technique, aka,
no technical hurdles showing or apparent to the listener, and certainly Not here on only Audio. One must Listen with
the Ears minus seeing Milstein, which would never have been allowed by Nathan Milstein, if he had known a rough
performance and not yet completed added variations in a Final "Mephisto for Solo Violin'" was completed and with
himself playing. Always in touch once moving back from London to Chicago, I knew the process of NM's 'Mephisto'
was ongoing and NM gifted sketches entered into a more lengthy NM "Mephisto' for Solo Violin. This performance
is Brief and Not Finished musically nor is the violinistic technique comparable to that of The Nathan Milstein. I am
going to contact the Milstein Family to advise this is being promoted as valid for it is Not, and after in depth bowing
studies with the Master of the Bow, I am most sure this is nowhere equivalent to the Artistry of Nathan Milstein and
quite candidly, Upset someone would parade this and possibly not someone who ever met/knew or studied for 3.5
years privately with Mr. Milstein in London at his Chester Square home nor played a Double Violin Concerto with
Nathan Milstein or was invited quite frequently to "play my Strad, Elisabeth, so I can hear it away from my own Ear,
to discern how it sounds today." Quote: Nathan Milstein. Ref: facebook.com/elisabeth.anne.775?fref=nf
and go to my Jascha Heifetz Violin Master Class film-Khachaturian, JH-7, Elisabeth Matesky {Rus vers. Library of
Master Performers}28:44 min here on YT but in Russian Titling and in our Original English as it Was & Remains, prior
to my private in depth-studies with Nathan Milstein, who 'liberated' my bow arm to mirror his own, and lifted my solo
concert violin playing attracting numerous International Engagements as Violin Soloist in major concert violin works:
Sibelius Violin Concerto: Khachaturian Violin Concerto; Glazounow; Brahms V.C.; Beethoven V.C., and with NM's RX'd
EM Cadenza between LvB Mvt's 2 and 3, plus Shostakovich Violin Concerto #1 in a, Opus 99 with the Bamberger
Symphoniker for Südwestdeutsche Rundfunk just prior to the most devastating loss of my Mentor-Father a week
following our recording in Bamberg in 13th Century Abbey where so many of the Bamberg Symphony recordings
used to be produced/made ... Btw, due Rudolph Barshai, engaged Russian Conductor being taken ill, HvK's Assist
Conductor, Hermann Michael of the Berliner Philharmoniker stepped in at a Last Moment's Notice to Direct the
Bamberger Symphoniker for our collaborative recording ... Not keen on the Scherzo (2nd Mvt) I would be okay
with the other 3 Mvt's, due my immense concerns I would be notified of the passing of my father in the US and
lost him just following completion of our late February 1979 in Week One of March. Respectfully re-submitted,
    Elisabeth Matesky, aka {on FB, Elisabeth Anne Matesky} w/Link typed out above ~ 4th August, 2024 ~ EM/US
