The manga might give this information a bit earlier than this, but here's the first real demonstration we get of how exactly Mustang's flame alchemy works. Every kind of alchemy we've seen before this doesn't really manipulate energy, just matter. Mustang's alchemy is no different. The transmutation circle printed on his glove, the same one he etched into his hand, doesn't produce flame, it splits apart gasses in the atmosphere to produce flammable gas wherever he wants to shoot his fire. His gloves are made of a special material that creates sparks when he snaps, which allows him to ignite the gas produced by the transmutation. We can see him getting around the limitations of the glove getting wet using the lighter to ignite the gasses produced by his transmutation. This is also the third time we've seen a philosopher's stone being destroyed; the Freezing Alchemist's stone in episode 1, Father Cornello's stone in episode 3, and now Lust's core. Based on this, we can start to deduce how a stone works, how it dies, and as an extension of that, how to kill a Homunculus. A Philosopher's Stone isn't an outright cheat code that lets you break the law of Equivalent Exchange. Rather, it's more like a giant battery that can fuel your alchemy up until it runs out of juice, at which point it disintegrates. It doesn't create matter from nothing, it creates matter from energy, the same principle as E = mc^2. The Freezer and Cornello used their stones up, while Lust was forced to burn up all the power in her stone regenerating from the damage Mustang inflicted. Homunculi aren't invincible, they just have a really, really big health bar to burn through.
Yep. Supposedly, Travis Willingham (Mustang) couldn't handle listening to his wife recording Lust's death screams and had to step out of the room. If I'm not mistaken, they were engaged at the time, and she got a bit frustrated with him over how she had to ruin her voice for the next few days 😅
The best, spoiler free explanation IMO of how Lust was killed is this: Philosopher stones could be seen as an immense , but not unlimited, store of energy. Healing wounds or regeneration uses up a fraction of it, so Mustang just kept making it use energy until Lust ran out.

the philosophers stone is basically a battery. fire is so effective because of the massive amount of energy it takes to fix it. a few bullet holes are relatively easy to fix, but 3rd degree burns over 95% of the body are a bit more difficult
I always love the "Well spoken, I couldn't agree more!" moment, not only because awesome line, but also Alphonse's reaction, just the "OH DAMN! Shield time!" look they manage to convey.

I think it’s awesome that Hughes effectively saved Roy’s life retroactively. He put a knife into Lust before he died, taking one life from her. If she had had that life she would’ve reached Mustang with her spear.
My favorite Alchemist has yet to reveal his powers. My second favorite just revealed his power. Alphonse learned from Greed's crew. He's thinking for himself, and rank no longer matters. He speaks as equals to others.
Okay, I need to know what editing black magic you're using to get such clear anime dialogue, I have an editing project in mind, and would love to know how you isolated the voices so well!
davinci resolve has a plugin called vocal isolation. it's normally for reducing room tone but it's pretty good at turning music down while maintaining the dialogue.
So there's actually some light novels that for this series as well. They're not written by Arakawa-sensei (and thus not required reading) but she did talk with the author of them and APPARENTLY one conversation basically went- Novel Author: Oh I really like Hughes Arakawa-sensei and Editor, knowing what's about to come(Hughes' death): *nervous chuckling* Novel author:...why are you laughing like that? And then it happened again with Havoc here. She expressed interest in him/in writing something focusing on him, right as Arakawa-sensei was prepping to take him out of the story. Luckily he didn't die BUT. This poor woman either has the best or worst timing either.
