Old Top Gear in a nutshell: We all agree the British car is sort of rubbish. Clearly, the foreign car is better in every possible way. But. The British car won my heart and therefore wins the recommendation. 😅
Tbf I’d rather own an Aston Martin than a Ferrari. Obviously I’ll never own either 🤣
Not quite every way. The Aston is much prettier, and sounds way better.
Aston looks so much better that i prefer it still. That Ferrari is fugly.
To be fair, they reviewed the last version of the Vanquish against the last version of the Ferrari 575M a year or two before, and both him and an F1 World Champion picked the Ferrari.
Well, it’s how it goes in real life too.
I know the Ferrari is better in every way, but that Aston Martin is a prettier thing to live with.
And then came the 599 GTO, an no one ever called the v12 Berlinettas "soft"...
I remember when Fifth Gear also had issues with the Vanquish. I think the timing belt slipped off because of the torque, which prompted an Aston Martin mechanic to fly in by chopper and fix it (twice, I believe).
Well, I think the 550 and 575 aged beautifully
Yep, how wrong he was!
That aged like fine wine. This guy was completely wrong. Always thought that was one of the prettiest Ferrari ever made.
@@MarkknightexeterI think he has a point. It's a similar case when Lamborghini introduced early Huracan. Sure you could still look at them today. But styling wise, it doesn't feel special enough among their respective brand lineup
Y'all tripping. The most bland and non-elegant ferraris that inspire no magic or attention
@@nayil100this guy???
It's been like 15 years now but I still love the looks of the 1st gen Vanquish. My God that is beautiful.
The only good thing about that Die Another Day movie was this Vanquish
The Vanquish is 23 now, still looks beautiful
This generation of cars will never be surpassed.... Modern day supercars look overstyled, overdramatic and shouty, massive grills, weird, square angles everywhere, dents, and odd lights that don't get along with the rest of the styling.
1990s - 2008 cars were the best in terms of beauty
@@Firemarioflower It's the same reason why I much prefer the Murcielago over the Aventador. I'm really not a fan of the latter's jet fighter styling. Give me the smooth curvaceous lines of the former all day long, even if it's the stripped-out SV version.
It's tantamount to heresy to say this in the face of the DB5, but the original Vanquish is possibly the best looking Aston ever made.
The Jaguar XK of this era was also a looker. Was essentially a super-sized E-type.
Once you hear a Vanquish start up you'll never forget the sound. It's the best noise I've ever heard.
Heard a db9 once it was awsomme
"and a rear wheel drive, in the back" thanks jeremy I thought it was up front
Just a heads up
It just continues the flow of the sentence.
@@sukhdevr3489 bothers me he didn't say "and the drive at the rear"
These astons have aged like a fine wine
More like a turd on a sidewalk in a hot summer day
Personally not a fan of the older models
Crusher Rusher why don’t you like them?
@@chriselliott3133 It looks literally like a potato. The newer ones are so much nicer
Crusher Rusher idk I like the vanquish s
The 575 and 550 has to be my favorite body style out of Ferrari. Clean and simple FR, nothing more, nothing less.
I remember this review from when i was 9. Its by far my favorite episode. I think i got the chills when the 575M entered.
The 550, 575 and 575 superamerica are some of the best looking Ferraris in my opinion.
For me only the 550 Barchetta is the pretty one of the 550s/575s. Also for me there is no prettier Ferrari than the 458 Italia. It's again question of taste and i respect your opinion.
I agree. 550 looks better. I wish there was a 550 with features of 575. Anyway, I don't like the look of 458 and the newer ferraris because they have one rear light on each side. The classic dual twin lights look much better.
I agree. If I ever move to the US or Canada, I will buy one. I love the 575s.
Funny how they thought the Ferrari wouldn't age well in their review, where they have changed their designs so much in the last few years vs. aston which have remained mostly the same. I think the Ferrari has aged very well.
Killacamfoo O.G. You just attested their statement. You see, only because the 575 (what was the specific model they were talking about) didn't age well, it wasn't timeless as the Daytona, so Ferrari redesigned the whole thing and Aston didn't because it was aging well, AM has this like a retro/classic style what makes it to look good even now, they are timeless, especially the new Vanquish and Vantages...
Coogan would have been so much better Than Chris Evans!
Julius Reed Very very good point :)
+Julius Reed exactly what i was thinking. He can make a good presenter and keep the fun/comic element in the top gear
+Julius Reed the guy is spitting his guts out for this project. and he did give top gear his most prized possesion. that white ferrari. i think we should give him a chance. the more shows, the merrier i say.

There are probably certain liability and insurance issues with Coogan. They cant risk him nodding off behind the wheel.
This Vanquish, the DBS and the DB5 are the best looking AMs.
+Krunal Rindani You have the same profile picture!! LMAO
Ayyyy! Nice. Mine is a screenshot of Supercars of London's snapchat :P
K R hell yeah
Yes!
Db9s and the rapide are much better looking than the vanquish
Even the Aston knows not to downshift to 2nd when you're doing 80mph.
Clarkson is nearly as full of shit as that clown demuro sometimes. Knowing how delicate that gearbox is I winced watching him trying to force it to downshift like that
A silver Vanquish S with a 6 speed manual would be perfect😍
@Dacia Sandero guys v10?? Aston never had a V10 car
I just love the 575's entry in this video :D
It was excellent
Indeed...
The Vanquish just looks so good
Thought the 575M would've been a lot faster. Unlike that big Aston, it can actually turn.
Remembering the original film had a longer conversation with Coogan, mentioning "if money wasn't a problem and my first name was Shake..." he'd take the Aston. Also, most of the music is changed from original, probably for copyright.
One of my favourite reviews in the history of TG.

VANQUISH S FOREVER
Such a stunning car and what an engine sound !!!
I still think 575 is one of the best looking Front Engine Supercars. Its amazing.
Sooooooo we’re not gonna talk about how the 575 & the corvette have the same lap time huh 🤔 9:48
Also both of these cars (the 575 & Vaquish) represent the beginning of the end of manual gearboxes in high-end cars. So sad 😞 BUT I’d have the 575 out of the two just in a 6speed.
Yup Yup that corvette was only a simple stingray making 400hp not a Z06 or even a ZR1😎
I prefer the styling of the Vanquish S here (or the original Vanquish) to 575MM. But!!! I prefer the styling of the 550 Maranello to the styling of the Vanquish. I find it amazing how minor cosmetic changes like the ones applied with the 575MM can ruin things. I mean, it's still nice, but the grill and the lights of the original 550 sit so much better with the overall styling of the car.
I love the 550.
with a few mods it would be a demon
7:11 Old Jeremy vs Young Jeremy
My God, the Ferrari 575 was such a beautiful piece of art...
Still, the Vanquish was the better looking of the two.
Shrihari Hudli The Vanquish looks overweight and dull imo.
Omair Sheikh LOL I think you have no taste, the Vanquish S is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
***** Doesn't do much for me. Beauty is subjective btw.
Ferrari 575 equals a modern interpretation of the 275 GTB/4. DB9 equals a modern DB5. Though the Aston may be more beautiful in the short term, the Ferrari will soar up and above the AM in the long term. Both in value, and in beauty. Pininfarina has had some shortcommings, but the 275 and 575 will be in the list of their masterpieces.
When you change up a gear, feather the throttle for a moment - you will find the change a lot smoother. With practice, you can get pretty good at it.
That´s what the owners manual of my 06 S says. ;)
Jeremy Clarkson is a good entertainer, but he doesn´t know much about cars. He never understood the Vanquish and its gearbox and that´s a shame. He didn´t have to loose the drag race, that was his own fault. The Vanquish isn´t that much slower than a 575.
Compare a Ferrari 599 gearbox to a well setup Vanquish S - you won´t feel any difference, that´s a fact. And yes, I mean the 599.
Today, the Vanquish S is a well often-sought after car with a very high reliability. Let´s see what will be in a few years. I think, the Vanquish S is the last true Aston. And even a Non-S car is brilliant if its setup is well done.
Alan Steadman The thing is that most people who buy these cars are not ace mechanics or seasoned racing drivers. They're average Joes who made a small fortune doing whatever they do for a living and can afford a sports car to have some fun with. They're not going to read the manual, nevermind trying to feather the throttle or take a corner with a certain amount of braking or whatever. The Aston should "just work" for anybody, but it doesn't. The Ferrari does. That's all Jeremy was saying. That being said, this was years ago. The shift paddle transmissions have gotten tons better and Jeremy now embraces them. They allow for instant changes, even in Astons, now that they learned from their past mistakes.
+David Van I like your logic.
It's a $160,000 car capable of changing gears with one finger. If you have to feather the throttle on an up-shift with a paddle gearbox then the manufacturer shouldn't offer paddle shift.
@@TheBS80 why it won't change down tho? Please explain it to me. I'm curious about it.
I love Aston Martin, but I love the 575 more than the Vanquish. It's a timeless classic.
The 550 and the 575 were kind of poisoned to me by Need for Speed - my first exposure to the car was the 550 in NFS 4, and it was *dogshit* . They'd put the handling flags in wrong, making it greasier in the back than a chili dog. No Ferrari should be getting out-cornered by a C5 Corvette.
I LOVE THE VANQUISH S! What a beauty. Sure, the interior is dated, but it is a classic. This car will be admired for it's looks for decades to come.
I think designwise the 550 will do age a lot better than the 512 testarossa or even the 512BB. There is no denial in that the Aston Martin has something to it visually that is just stunning, though.
It has. The 512's are worth nothing and the 550's and 575's are holding their value quite well for a ferrari of their age.
Maybe it's because I'm an 80s kid but I love the 512. The 512BB is nice but the Testa Rosa just does something for me.
In my personal opinion, the 512 is quite the pretty car but both the 550 and the 575 are straight up ugly
@@mihneaiordan1813 It is not often that I get a response ten years after the comment *G* Of the 5 12 I liked the König (tuner) version without the grates at the air inlets.
Best quotes about flappy paddles ever:"I paid for the car! I want to choose when to change gears, not you!" and " This is really designed for, you know, posers, people who have carpet warehouses...who just want to show off for the people at the golf club...look at me I have a gear box like Michael Schumacher." So true. Those who can shift properly want to shift. Those who can't need flappy paddles.
Yeah, as per the norm BBC, "Sheikh, oooh is that racist ?"... Pretty pathetic.
if you've watched the review on the Alfa Romeo 166 and the initial review on the Aston, you'll notice that someone at Top Gear clearly likes the song when the Aston enters shot in the beginning
Just watching this after Aston unveiled the new Vanquish S and it's astonishing by how much that car has transformed in terms of looks and performance. It's like night and day.
Back when top gear actually reviewed cars...
And back when Steve Coogan didn't hate Jeremy.
Wow, that way of introducing was pure style! 3:36
I think the Ferrari has aged quite gracefully
Nowhere near as good as the vanquish tho
I love when stig listens to those songs while serious tests. LIKE A BOSS.
The DB9 remains one of the most beautiful car ever made.
And that V12 is orgasmic.
Steve Coogan gave a good account of himself in this feature, but he was wrong about the Ferrari not aging well in terms of styling. It looks better than ever.
He was so right when he said he didn't think the styling will age well. Most people wouldn't even recognise that as a ferarri if it was debadged.
i could buy one but its running one not cheap
then again, most people have no clue about cars
As could be said about any Ferrari. They're really not all that special.
It actually ages pretty well, these things are very desirable now on a second-hand market, especially manuals
JUNAID187 Does not aged well?? Compared to Vanquish?? You have got to be kidding me
Did they cut out Steve's comment where he says something like 'If i didnt care about the depreciation and my name started with Sheik, i'd have the Aston' or was that another clip?
Yh they cut it out
7:25 when he said "they wont age well" He was completely right. The Aston looks brand new, modern and something we'd still buy today. On the other hand, the Ferrari looks dated. It doesn't blend into the current line of Ferraris at all.
To this day...
I have to disagree with Coogan. The 550 and 575 imo have truly aged well. Seeing those cars is like having a fine, 20 yr old wine. I love the understated design compared to the flashy cars they make nowadays.
The Aston is gorgeous for sure but to be honest I love the quirky styling of the 575 even more. Something about that center scoop on the hood. Love it.
“So, shall we arm wrestle for it?” Is a saying I still use today 😂
I love my DB9, 6speed manual gearbox and convertible. I finally got one, and it is soooooo beautiful. Of course my wife is jealous but they are equally smooth when I've finished waxing them.
Me: watching a top gear video about a car.
Doug demuro: would you like to know the quirks and features of that car?
Vanquish with its front grill, looks like a prototype of today’s Ford Mondeo )
Vanquish S is a Timeless Classic... STUNNING. Best Aston Ever
The top gear boys make old cars look like good ones! Good reviewing.
3:38 most Epic entrance Ever!
I was looking for this comment. Seriously good cinematography
Cougan was absolutely right about the 575M not aging well. The Vanquish still looks quite nice in 2016 but the 575M looks so dated.
Astons are timeless still think the db9 has aged less .
Just yesterday i saw a 575 and couple of weeks ago a vanquish . The Ferrari had a real presence in the area and there wasn't a single person that didn't shouted "look a Ferrari" , not to mention it look incredible despite the 10+ years of age. The Aston unfortunately, seemed like all the other cars and I'm not saying isn't and incredibly fantastic looking car but it doesn't have the presence of the Ferrari and nobody really gave it a blink.
575M looks dated? lol I can assure you, to this day it forms crowds around it. and its side profile is almost perfect!
80386 lol where do you live ?
^ Anywhere where normal people live. Basically anything other than Beverly Hills or Dubai.
Aston Martin looked always great - I remember the 70's Lagonda for example, this car looked like not from this planet. But what does it help: The company got bust several times, changed hands as often as a rental car - and all because their staff had no idea about quality standards. Today the important components come from Mercedes - and I take it the electric future will even increase Aston Martins dependence.
It does Bentley and Rolls Royce no harm to be owned by German car makers, does it? Should Mercedes buy Aston Martin one day, it may well mean the end of their financial and qualitative imponderables.
Definately think the Vanquish aged much better.
Darkmark454 you’re entitled to your wrong opinion.
I think they both didn't age too well. The fog lights kinda ruin the vanquish and the 550 looks alot better than 575. But I agree with Jeremy, would rather have a DB9
@@anthonydeluca6966 designes by Henrik Fischer
Dbs is still better looking
The reason Aston Martin charges ludicrous amounts of money for cars that are pretty much the same as the previous model is simple. They do it because they can. That's Aston Martin in a nutshell.
Say whatever, Aston is the best looking 😇 especially with that noise 😍
You're welcome. Yes, Newport-Pagnell started in 1958 building the DB4. The story ended on 19th July 2007, when the last Vanquish S Ultimate Edition n°50/50 (chassis 2593) was built.
Love the way the Aston looks but honestly I still just love the way that Ferrari looks more. I love silly all over the place mad super cars but the Ferrari is just pretty. It's so beautiful looking but at the same time it's not excess, and it's not too busy. The way it sits, it's posture, it's beautiful Italian tan leather interior, just classy. It reminds me alot of the F430 in this way. Now Ferraris are still beautiful but there much more aggressive. The F12 and 599 are serial killers in disguise as cars. This was the last Ferrari to be elegant and pretty while being the V12 flagship of the range at that time. I'll miss them.
I'd have the Aston but I do agree that most car manufacturers have lost their way recently
I Agree, but i would take the Vanguish if it had all the Bond toys on it, Loved the camoflague device in Die another day, absolutley superb.
The Aston simply looks magnificant!
The Aston is absolutely crafted to perfection, not an inch of body work wasted. This Ferrari is nice too, but the Aston has aged so nicely, the Ferrari looks quite dated.
aston martin vanquish, My dream car
The sound on the Aston is just amaizing...
Thank you, I own an Aston Martin
Steve needs to do more car reviews. Honestly.
They should have used him in the new ‘top gear’ instead of the wallys they did use
If you said the 550 has the best looking rear end of any Ferrari I wouldn't argue with you one bit!
I do get what they mean about the Ferrari not ageing well but I saw a 575 in the flesh whilst in London recently and it sure looks good even now IMO.
From behind looks nice, but the front screams 90s styling. It doesn't means it looks bad, but it doesn't looks modern. The Astons age perfectly well
They actually did this comparison way back in series 1 episode 1. But back then it was the Ferrari 550 (not 575) against the Vanquish (Not Vanquish S) and Damon Hill was the other driver.
Well, it's 2019 and the Ferrari has actually aged well
Also, it's weird to see Alan Partridge in something other than a Lexus
It really hasn't
Aha!
Idk abou you bit that Ferrari is one of the most gorgeos thing that the guys from Maranello ever made.
would love to see my grandma making drifts to the market in one of theese...

why would you want to change down to 2nd while doing 60 MPH?
I drive a stock V6 Mustang that goes 80 in second gear. I'm sure this can do a whole lot better than that.
Luke Parsons Clarkson tried to gear down while the engine was revving at 6000 rpm (max rev 7000), that's why he couldn't do it, he would be in over-rev !
how does a floppy pedal works? yes it's for shifting. but do you have to step on a clutch pedal when using it or do you just flick it to change gear without stepping on the clutch?
