True, but the car was designed for the F1 gearbox and I have heard from a credible source that the 599 and also the 612 were horrible to drive with a manual gearbox.
My source is a Ferrari dealer. He told me, the later cars (575 and even more so the 599 and 612) were designed around and for the F1 gearbox, the ECU and the whole set up where not programmed for a manual gearbox, hence the F1 suits the cars much better. Apparently the 550 was the last "real" manual gearbox Ferrari...
I can remember problems with the speedo - in the UK you could only legally use a tiny segment - by the time the needle was horizontal you were ten miles over the motorway limit... See my chat above but I was in the process of buying and demoing a 996 Turbo X50 like your father, and it was a real A road weapon, but without the aesthetics of the 550 and of course not that wonderful V12, hence my decision to buy the Maranello instead.

Harry is a treasure! I had a 550 in the day and now have a 575M. The interior of the 575 is more pleasing to the eyes in my opinion, but I do miss the clanking sound of the gear shifts.
I love the way you review cars and take them on adventures. You are an adult with a love for cars not a wannabe hip guy who needs the latest lambo to show of to his instagramm followers or something. You are calm and yet enthusiastic about it. I love it!
This is still my all time favorite Ferrari. I saw one about a year ago and was struck not only by how well it's aged but by how small it is compared to the newer stuff.
Favorite modern Ferrari. Looks very liveable. Very understated. I'd delete the emblems. If you know, you know. This car doesnt need to say "Ferrari" on it.
@@JayEmmOnCars I would be disappointed if you hadn't !!! Goos stuff - hope its all working out as well as you dreamed it would be. My Dino was more than I could have imagined it would be. Driving dream cars is one thing - waking up knowing that you own one? - Thats a dream come true in itself!
Beautiful car, such a sexy shifter, but not such a race car that you can't drive it whenever you want. Sometimes even the exotic manufacturers get it just right!
About 20 years ago I had bought a Lancia delta Evo and had just received my BMW M3 e30 that I found while I was working near Bremmen in Germany. Whilst picking up the M3 I spotted a short wheelbase Audi Quattro so I put a deposit down on it. I had a dream of owning all 3 Box arch babies as I called them. Sadly my enthusiasm outweighed my talent and I crashed and wrote of the M3. Because of this I never picked up the Audi ! What a mistake this turned out to be. Harry is my favorite petrol head to watch. Keep up the good work Mr Metcalfe
Mine too at the time I was fortunate enough to sit in one for real back in 1999 when I went to a car show. It was the same color as this too I remember. :)
Another enjoyable video as always Harry - love your no nonsense approach and I always learn something along the way! I've always loved the 550 Maranello - this was a great era for Ferrari! While I like some of the current range they are almost too much 'in your face' - during this period they were just that bit more elegant I feel! Thanks for the upload - keep up the good work!
This was the 1st Ferrari I ever test drove, the 550 back in 2007. I drove it like a grandma, regret not letting the reigns out a little. Test drove a 360 back to back with the 550 and the 360 blew me away, much more of what I thought a Ferrari experience should be, couldn't stop smiling on that test drive. I put a deposit on the 360. Shortly after, test drove brand new 505 HP Corvette Z06. Got my deposit back on the Ferrari and bought the Z06. I won't make that mistake again. The love faded fast for the Corvette. Going light-speed on freeway on-ramps gets old after a while, much more to the driving experience than just speed. Now I'm shopping for a 550. Always thought this was the most beautiful modern Ferrari, reminiscent of the '64 250 GTO. It's aged beautifully, looks fantastic, elegant from the front, very aggressive from the back unlike all the 12 cylinders that Ferrari has made since, modern designs have been bad in my opinion. The 599, F12 and the Super Fast all have design problems in my opinion. The F12 looks like it's wearing a diaper from the back with the weird center lines coming down from the trunk, looks like a sumo wrestler or something.
Loved your comment about going to work and coming home and that car lived your dreams! I know that joy! Your videos and overall experience in various vehicles are fantastic! Superb! Keep up the good work!

04dram04 yeah my friend just got a '96 S600 V12 at auction for $3000 Canadian, absolutely ridiculous, probably because it's an old luxury car before a classic performance car
04dram04 thats because the oil coolers leak and cost several thousand to repair, also the coil packs are about $1000 each. The suspensions cost $10,000 to replace, its a maintenance nightmare when they get old.
V8 It's because they are luxury cars so it's muffled up to be quiet. The 6.0L V12 is the same one used in the first Zonda so it's possible to make the luxo-barge S600 sound like it with a new exhaust system.

You really offer an extra level of insight on top of the usual (best on YT) level here, Harry. Very nice. Since everybody else in the comments seem to post wishes I figure I should as well. It would be magical to hear you talk us through the 288 GTO - easily the best proportioned car Maranello has produced (and a video of that would be much more special than a F40 one). I realize it's not a particularly common car (lol), but since we're throwing wishes around...
Wow... Watching this 550 take on turns has to the best thing. I would edit a few more rounds of curvy roads. When you compare to current Ferrari’s, the 550 reminds me of an Italian Mafia boss dressed in English tailoring. Soft and elegant looks, but don’t get him mad. I would confidently say this is truly one of the most timeless designs from Ferrari of modern times. Just Perfect.
So what. It's a great steering wheel. The difference was that this was clad in proper Italian leather. Speedline also made wheels for lesser brands. So what?
Something funky about this vid Harry, either the autofocus or lighting, made my eyes hurt watching this one, never had a problem on your other vids tho ? Lovely review thanks :)
Thank You for this wonderful real world review. I just tripped over this video couldn't believe my eyes. Aways thought the 550 is the most beautiful Ferrari. Even better than the P330. Thanks Again.
Pretty good, but I have got to disagree with you about when Luca di Montezimolo arived on the scene. He was Enzo's right hand man at the age of 26 in about 1973. He subsequently ran the whole Ferrari outfit including the F1 side extremely well for decades until the thuggish, not very intelligent head of parent company Fiat Auto, Sergio Marcchione decided that Ferrari exclusivity & desirability (Which has everything to do with used car prices, hence desirability when new) were very secondary considerations to short term profit, & production should increase by 40%. di Montezimolo didn't agree, so di Montezimolo was booted out With a 26 million Euro fu** off gift. A bit too early to accurately assess the long-term effects & implications of this move, but I doubt if it will enhance Ferrari's reputation in the long term.
Frank Cree - you are both in fact correct but Harry was of course referring to LdM's return to Ferrari after doing other jobs in the Fiat empire & The Americas cup & Italia 90 etc
Just heard about this channel because of James's 550 video. ( JayEmm on Cars ) Glad i checked it out. Really nice to have another, non clickbait or shouty car channel to watch. :)

Thanks Harry, great video again. I couldn't help but notice the white BB next to the Espada. Really hope your doing a review on that sometime soon. Once again thanks for all your videos.
The truly classy, graceful lines from Ferrari's beginning in the late 1940's through the early/mid-90's were the most attractive years, in my opinion. The onset of 4-wheeled video games with exaggerated sculptures and electric hybrids are just a different vehicle and, to me, are a totally different class of machine. Many like them but the appeal just doesn't reach me like the earlier era... and not just with the Ferrari, but many of the other cars of those same periods. Harry's style and this fine older Ferrari fit together like "hand-in-glove." I happened to be in San Francisco traffic for a couple of miles down 19th Avenue one sunny afternoon, along side one of these when they were brand new. I thought then that it was one of the classiest cars I'd ever seen and my opinion hasn't diminished the slightest bit since then. It is one of Ferrari's finest ever. It's too bad that Enzo didn't live long enough to have seen it. I think he would have approved very much!
So highly appreciated, yourself as well as your 550! Thank you for sharing your passion! And I can´t start to tell you about my strong emotions about that open gated gear box! That feeling, that sound! And stroooongg loong V12 legs.. (Getting carried away, sorry!)

I'm still mad that my Father bought a 996 Turbo over my recommendation of one of these 8 years ago! Both have appreciated but these considerably more so. I just feel that the 550 is so much more special.
Yeah but he could have driven the 996 a lot... the 550 would have to be garaged almost indefinitely for it to appreciate.
If only he got a 993 turbo instead
He considered one at about £50k in 2012 *sob*
See my chat above but I was in the process of buying and demoing a 996 Turbo X50 like your father, and it was a real A road weapon, but without the aesthetics of the 550 and of course not that wonderful V12, hence my decision to buy the Maranello instead.
One has much lower maintenance costs and better reliability...the Porsche 996 911 Turbo.
Harry, you are such a joy to watch. The way you show everything about the car, goes to show the time and passion you have spent in these glorious machines...!!! 😀🔝👍🚗💨
There is only few people that i watch their videos and listen. the others you just want to fast forward through the non sense. Great video Harry.
Good to see such a professional & polite review. Please do a review on the testarossa or a 512.
There is a testarossa review and a trip to the Sahara...
Great review Harry! I always love your reviews. The owners perspective is a true review.
Thanks for the video Harry, reviewing cars of this era never gets old. Your channel is a time capsule.
The Tywin Lannister of the car world.
Harry is a treasure! I had a 550 in the day and now have a 575M. The interior of the 575 is more pleasing to the eyes in my opinion, but I do miss the clanking sound of the gear shifts.
And the 575 is faster too! Lot faster than 550 ☺️
Great vid harry, just admire your sense of enjoyment . Keep on pressing ! Cheers
I love the way you review cars and take them on adventures. You are an adult with a love for cars not a wannabe hip guy who needs the latest lambo to show of to his instagramm followers or something.
You are calm and yet enthusiastic about it. I love it!
Dying to see you review a F40 Harry! :)
Yep, can never have enough F40 videos.
Agreed. Especially it being 30 years old.
Say whaat? ;)
If you review the countach you have to review the f40 to, its every 80s born childhood dreamcar
Ultimate go-kart.
This is still my all time favorite Ferrari. I saw one about a year ago and was struck not only by how well it's aged but by how small it is compared to the newer stuff.
Thats how a car interior should be ,simple and functional ,not like the starship enterprise full of switches ,knobs and screens that no one ever uses
It's a beautiful interior design
I love Harry’s attention to detail. He appreciates and sees things that not many do.
This is my favorite Ferrari of all time
Favorite modern Ferrari.
Looks very liveable. Very understated. I'd delete the emblems. If you know, you know. This car doesnt need to say "Ferrari" on it.
It is amazing how much easier it is to work on a V engine mounted in the front where it belongs. Excellent engine bay on this car.
Nice Ferrari 512BBi (white one) in the back, can't wait for the review!
That snicketing of the gear changes is so refreshing. So mechanical. I love it.
came to re-watch this after @Jayemm bought a 550 and referenced Harry as an supporting inspiration for the decision
I wonder if jayemm watched this first?
@@nelsonclub7722 well if he has been lusting after one for 23 years I'm sure he'll have researched as much as he could..
@@nelsonclub7722 Yes he did
@@JayEmmOnCars I would be disappointed if you hadn't !!! Goos stuff - hope its all working out as well as you dreamed it would be. My Dino was more than I could have imagined it would be. Driving dream cars is one thing - waking up knowing that you own one? - Thats a dream come true in itself!
Stunner. And that scoop on the hood somehow makes this look even more exotic, intimidating.
Beautiful car, such a sexy shifter, but not such a race car that you can't drive it whenever you want. Sometimes even the exotic manufacturers get it just right!
Porsche always have, even if the looks polarize on occassion.
the speedometer ?
That was my favorite car in NFS High Stakes
Mine too at the time I was fortunate enough to sit in one for real back in 1999 when I went to a car show. It was the same color as this too I remember. :)
The prettiest of the "modern" ferraris. Always had a soft spot for them, such a handsome car
I wonder how much is going for the 6 speed transmission conversions to the 550/575 nowadays
Smoke 'em
lol you don't need it
All 550 were manuals 575 were mostly Autos but the conversion is waaaay to expensive to really consider it
All 550's were manuals, and only a small handfull of 575's were manuals.
Harry, I'd kill for you to do a review of the 360 that's always hiding in the garage. Cheers!
Harry - you must know someone with a Daytona - would love to hear your thoughts and see a film about one of them..!
Maybe..
Fingers crossed! Thanks
@@harrysgarage Thanks to your Mr Harry, Tyrrell´s Classic Car Workshop!
I had one just like that. As a kid. As a model car. One of my fav Ferraris. Especially in silver!
What a lovely car!
Great video.
This is how an actual review should be. Informative and thorough with an actual experience with the car.
Some classy journalism that was.
Loved your comment about going to work and coming home and that car lived your dreams!
I know that joy!
Your videos and overall experience in various vehicles are fantastic!
Superb!
Keep up the good work!
Back when Ferrari built proper cars.
Amen!
@@revolutionday1 Fuck yes !
Harry, you are one of if not the best car reviewer on youtube, I had no idea you are a professional car journalist until recently, i was just amazed at the quality of the material.
Hope you would do some motorcycle videos(saw the honda trip tho :D ) as the motorcycle community sorely lacks a professional review channel.
Thanks for kind comments, I should do more bike vids, just working out how to do them. Weather being horrible in UK this summer, so not done as many vids as I was planning to recently
Its crazy how valuable these are, but a v12 Mercedes of the era, is worth $3000
04dram04 yeah my friend just got a '96 S600 V12 at auction for $3000 Canadian, absolutely ridiculous, probably because it's an old luxury car before a classic performance car
04dram04 thats because the oil coolers leak and cost several thousand to repair, also the coil packs are about $1000 each. The suspensions cost $10,000 to replace, its a maintenance nightmare when they get old.
He said Destro!!! Lolol
They're not sexy, don't rev to 7500rpm
V8
It's because they are luxury cars so it's muffled up to be quiet.
I realize it's not a particularly common car (lol), but since we're throwing wishes around...
such a great looking, elegant car.
Great video! Please make a video review of your recent Alfa Giulia pick up! Thank you
Ace review again Harry! Ace presenter. There's lots of car shows and you tubers could do with your experience. Thanks Harry!
Tried convincing my boss to by one of these about 10 years ago. He bought a red 360 with F1 gearbox instead.......TWONK
He shudda promoted you for that suggestion
Great Stuff Harry, Twenty minutes of pleasure whenever I can catch up with your Vids!
Pointless factoid No. 1000076b; the exact same Momo airbag steering wheel was fitted to the Honda Integra Type R.
MrGrentch that’s why it looked familiar
So what. It's a great steering wheel. The difference was that this was clad in proper Italian leather. Speedline also made wheels for lesser brands. So what?
8p
Something funky about this vid Harry, either the autofocus or lighting, made my eyes hurt watching this one, never had a problem on your other vids tho ?
Lovely review thanks :)
"When I needed an everyday usable Ferrari" emphasis on needed lol
( JayEmm on Cars )
Glad i checked it out. Really nice to have another, non clickbait or shouty car channel to watch. :)
I'm sure the fog lights on the 550 cost more than my 2017 V6 Honda Accord Coupe. Beautiful car, nonetheless.
And I bet in the real world your Honda is faster, more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than the Ferrari. Supercars are cartoon cars.
A_Wise_Young_Man abscond from the comment section twat
The 550 is going for the price of a new Honda.
Thanks for this one Harry, it's my all time fave Ferrari in detail I'd never get to see... Once again Great video!
Another great video Harry, I never miss your uploads, & comment on most, I see your nearly on 150 subscribers which is well deserved, do you ever look / comment on other channels, my Car Review Channel is on 320 subscribers & hoping for a few more, take a look ?!
Roger Bailey nice channel, I've subbed
Roger Bailey
I'll give you a sub content looks good.
Doug DeMuro Congrats on your new e63 AMG wagon purchase! Nice car! Ever consider reviewing the e60 M5?
Doug DeMuro congratulations on your new Mercedes. very good decision
+Nicholas Zivich this guy is not actually Doug lol
Thanks Harry, great video again. I couldn't help but notice the white BB next to the Espada. Really hope your doing a review on that sometime soon. Once again thanks for all your videos.
i am not an expert, but for me thats the last ferrari!
AMEN!
''When i needed a everyday usable Ferrari'' :)
Awesome video. It's cool hearing you talk about the car and how knowledgeable you are about it. It's neat to see a real world review on a car like this. It was definitely ahead of it's time in terms of performance and styling. It's a very beautiful car and still holds up well today.
