I've been on RUclips since late 2007, and this is without a doubt one of the best channels on the site.
Hear here!
I'm assuming that you have watched Tyrell's classic workshop....But on the off chance that you haven't, check it out! Its amazing also
The clink of the gearshift in the metal gate is magical.
"something happens when you take traction control off"
-does a burn out, hard shift
"Yes, it does lose a bit of traction." With English politeness 😂😂👍👍
Harry's just the best!!
"When I needed an everyday Ferrari", what a wonderful sentence :-)
Thanks for the video Harry, you inspired me to cancel my Model 3 order and hunt one of these beauties down instead.
thedr00 bit of a cost difference 😂😂
How did the search go? Did you find one?
Jebus, that's like saying you've dumped Delia Smith for Nigella Lawson.
Did you get one?
Greta says "How dare you" :-)
Look at that gated manual. LOOK AT IT!
Don't just look at, listen to it!
Sad to see that go
Yes. The only transmission that should be in a real sports car
Ha Ha, you know it!
Just think, no modern flappy pedal Ferrari will look this classy in 25 years.
Gorgeous design, my pick would be a manual 550 in a dark blue with tan leather!
I'd personally plonk for the WSR version of this car. Ultra rare and with a very tasty spec. Roll cage covered in leather, the handling pack and even stiffer roll bars. Only 34 made I believe and still very much attainable.
Tour De France Blue... crema daytona seats
I saw a red one at the shopping mall back in the 1990s. It was gorgeous in person. Videos don't do it justice.
Yellow with grey leather for me. Grey wheels too
Red looks great as well
Finally a real youtuber with experience !!!!!
"Back in 2004 I bought one as a sort of company car..."
cheeky lad
He just wanted cheap runaround, nothing special, like the testarossa
yeah, big LOL moment
In my country for company owners the best way to duck the taxes is to get some "costs" for the company. It's made with a family fleet of some expensive vehicles. All BMW 550, 750, all Audi 5, or 6, then the Porsches from Boxster to Cayenne all of this class cars fall into this space. No problem to sort out a Ferrari 550 here.
"I had a Pagani Zonda after this..." As you do, of course.
My first ever 'favorite Ferrari' from over a decade ago. Love it
tharun72 for me the favourite Ferrari from the new age. I don't really like the styling of the cars afterwards.
Same here, such a pretty car
I agree, I still want one.
Really wish Ferrari still made cars as elegant as this :-(
They do
@@jaymyers6452 Not really, I guess the closest thing now is that, albeit sexy, 812superfast got it lacks the rawness of the 550 Maranello. I rode passenger in the 'nello once and have sat in the 812 at the dealer. that later car seems like computer driven spaceship. the 'nello seems like a mechanical marvel.
@@jaymyers6452 no, they don't
@@albertoj.mollinedo4116 go in an 812 when it's moving and then tell, but times change the eu made safety standards tight :(
@@albertoj.mollinedo4116 You're right. Even ROMA, FF or F12 are just no real Ferraris anymore. Too much has gone lost without manual gearbox
This is so refreshing to watch after seeing American kids and there click bait youtube channels
Yeah
don't forget the 20-something british douchebag youtubers (STG, schmee, and the rest of those bell-ends). Those trust-fund cunts are the worst.
@@stevenhaas9622 Ahahaha exactly the same thoughts here. Boring and irritating, full of childish screams and expressions...FFS TALK ABOUT THE CARS
Couldn't agree more. I wish Harry would do a review on a 599 GTB, haven't seen a review on it in his style. Hopefully soon

What a combo! NA V12, gated manual transmission and an FR layout. The 90's was quite an era.
Great video as always Harry, really enjoyed it. The 550 Maranello is truly one of the most beautiful cars of the 90s.
Great video as always Mr Harry. When I was a teenager I used to eat every single Evo issue. Now I'm automotive engineer and I want to say thank you for what you have done.
I always thought this was one of the most beautiful Ferrari's.
when we talked about cars in the philippines, i always mention this car because this is my favorite
It's styling is quite elegant and doesn't over do it. The 550 Marenello might not look so bold as the others, but that actually makes it very appealing. It's nice not to attract a lot of attention.
It is in my view
bella, bella macchina
This is the one I've been looking forward to, thanks Harry.
Something about this car, the front-engine, the V12, the era, it all comes together to become something very special.
As always wonderful review. Funny how Ferrari had an almost "Aston Martin" philosophy when producing this car. Sober and sleek design, few badges, attention to detail, and a lot of power if needed.
sdfsfsf notice how when Aston have updated their 9 and Rapids they added a little ducks arse spoiler just like this? Totally agre re the styling analogy, the last truly elegant Ferrari that put elegance ahead of iPhone snapper appeal.
A car suitable for a gentleman.
How much nicer to see a steering wheel without millions of buttons....
Same as in some Hondas of the time, dc2, accord type r etc
Porsche still makes those steering wheels even today.
The funny thing is that they thought it was too bulky as a result of the newly added airbag!
Harry, your videos always make my day! I return periodically and watch these older videos because they are like nothing else out there. Lovely work and amazing passion! A big thank you, Sir.
Harry I have just come across your channel. I have just gone from one video to the next for the last 4 hours. Absolutely love it and your experience and knowledge of the cars and presentation is second to none. Thank you
I wish there will come a day when I will need an "everyday Ferrari" :)
Gen 1 NSX and now 550M! Harry's doing all my favorite cars!
Harry just does the best car reviews on the internet. I've watched this particular video multiple times. Its so refreshing to listen to an unbiased review. Helps that I own one of these 550 Maranellos but I never get tired of hearing about them.
It is always a pleasure to take a break and watch your videos. Thank you for keeping up with the uploads
Harry's Garage is like a more informative and classy Jay Leno's Garage.
Absolutely, I hadn't thought about that and I agree. I must confess to actually also loving Jay Leno's videos though too.
The nice thing about Jay Leno's Garage is having the owners of the cars that give their experiences with them
The problem with Jay Leno is that he does not know much about cars. Most comments are sheer superlatives, a typical American trend to find that unique fact or statistic for everything. Harry, on the other hand, characterizes his cars, he can compare year models, he notices design patterns of the times, he does his homework out of passion. He is also willing to get his hands dirty fixing or cleaning his own cars. Harry has a way of appropriating his vehicles where Jay remains at the sideline, a pure spectator, a child with cash incapable of an appreciation that only true immersion confers..
@@flourishforever WTH? Jay Leno once started talking about cars at a concours and he went for 3 hours sorting out every important car ever made from the 1890s to the current day with mindblowing knowledge and information on every single one, right out of the top of his head. Jay is a freaking automotive encyclopedia and works on cars himself most ot his day!
"I've never listened to Jay Leno review a car before." - Pablo Espinosa 2020
Good lord, the nose on that car is incredible. Always loved the original 550 design, but never appreciated how low slung that nose is. Gorgeous.
One of my favorites from Maranello, Harry’s knowledge and presentation are unrivaled on the internet.
Thanks for the video Harry, reviewing cars of this era never gets old. Your channel is a time capsule.
A lovely Sunday just got even better with a new Harry's Garage upload.
Great review Harry! I always love your reviews. The owners perspective is a true review.
This is a car from my youth and somehow looks better now than ever. Also a proper review delivering so much knowledge and experience that could only come from having owned and lived with this car. Awesome! Thanks Harry
Had a 1999 550. loved it! daily driver for years as well as drove from Virginia to Texas.
Man i love this channel. Definitely, you Mr Harry and Chris Harris are best car reviewers of all time! I wish you upload more videos :)
Dying to see you review a F40 Harry! :)
Yep, can never have enough F40 videos.
Agreed. Especially it being 30 years old.
I think Harry said he wasn't keen on doing one because he doesn't really like the F40 much.
Say whaat? ;)
If you review the countach you have to review the f40 to, its every 80s born childhood dreamcar
This is the best channel on RUclips, period. Thanks Harry
Awesome video. It's cool hearing you talk about the car and how knowledgeable you are about it. It's neat to see a real world review on a car like this. It was definitely ahead of it's time in terms of performance and styling. It's a very beautiful car and still holds up well today.
Great vid harry, just admire your sense of enjoyment . Keep on pressing ! Cheers
Crazy that this came out in 1996...styling looks about 10 years newer.
For me the styling is poor, those front air vents are fugly and the rest is plain with just a kink over the rear wheels, not for me.
@@MonaichFother If it isnt design loud enough for you then just go. Dont say its "poor" because it is everything but not poor. Nobody wants to know you"re lacking taste.
@@HanSolo__ I just rewatched the video and I don't know what the hell I was on about. Looks very classy to me, something you wouldn't be embarrassed to turn up in to a first date or golf outing etc. Maybe I should go looking for something with go faster stripes which would be more to my taste. :D
@@MonaichFother I would say there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a car with the stripes. As long as you do use it on the track or some specified model sport event. I mean you have to stay recognizable on the competition right? With 20-ish simmilar looking Porsche 944 S2 Turbo S or 20+ Mitsu Lancers Evo 9 Not only for your service/help but for the judges. If you are racing stock machine and you cant afford 2nd car for daily. Run it with stripes all the way. Cheers :)
Well the 575, which was an updated version of this car, was produced until 06, so you aren't exactly wrong.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Harry, looking forwards to the next.
Loved your comment about going to work and coming home and that car lived your dreams!
I know that joy!
Your videos and overall experience in various vehicles are fantastic!
Superb!
Keep up the good work!
I didnt really like the 550 when I was a kid, now im older I think the styling has aged so well. Lovely car
came to re-watch this after @Jayemm bought a 550 and referenced Harry as an supporting inspiration for the decision
I wonder if jayemm watched this first?
@@nelsonclub7722 well if he has been lusting after one for 23 years I'm sure he'll have researched as much as he could..

I love your channel, Harry! Great cars and presentation style. Keep it coming!
Thanks for this one Harry, it's my all time fave Ferrari in detail I'd never get to see... Once again Great video!
These are the sort of reviews you smoke a cigar too and drink a glass of fine whiskey.
Maker's Mark, straight outta' the freezer, and into a short glass., in front of the fireplace, with Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" barely humming along in the background....
...at the end of the day, in my leather chair in front of a roaring fireplace... AFTER the drive in the Maranello... PERFECT!
Well for me it would be a Lagavulin 16.... because I can't afford a 25 !!
Best looking Ferrari IMO. A silver Maranello is so understated it's almost socially acceptable.
Keep the videos coming...You're like a car enthusiast, mechanic, engineer, historian, and journalist all rolled into one.
Another enjoyable video as always Harry - love your no nonsense approach and I always learn something along the way! I've always loved the 550 Maranello - this was a great era for Ferrari! While I like some of the current range they are almost too much 'in your face' - during this period they were just that bit more elegant I feel! Thanks for the upload - keep up the good work!
I'm still mad that my Father bought a 996 Turbo over my recommendation of one of these 8 years ago! Both have appreciated but these considerably more so. I just feel that the 550 is so much more special.
Yeah but he could have driven the 996 a lot... the 550 would have to be garaged almost indefinitely for it to appreciate.
If only he got a 993 turbo instead
He considered one at about £50k in 2012 *sob*
See my chat above but I was in the process of buying and demoing a 996 Turbo X50 like your father, and it was a real A road weapon, but without the aesthetics of the 550 and of course not that wonderful V12, hence my decision to buy the Maranello instead.
One has much lower maintenance costs and better reliability...the Porsche 996 911 Turbo.
Beautiful car, such a sexy shifter, but not such a race car that you can't drive it whenever you want. Sometimes even the exotic manufacturers get it just right!
Porsche always have, even if the looks polarize on occassion.
the speedometer ?
Great Video Harry I always liked the 550. Looking around in your garage is like a dream what a collection you have.
Lovely to see this again - remembering mine (apart from the fact that the maintenance almost broke me...), yes, it has a 110 litre tank, and a fuel gauge the size of a coin, which didn't move for the first 25 litres/140 miles, worked ok until halfway, then dropped to read zero, so you never dared pass a petrol station. Stunning thing. It owns you, mind...
Harry, of all your video's, this is the one one where you're smiling for 25 minutes. You may not know it but you and the last V12 front engine manual gearbox prodotti di Maranello are meant for each other. My favorite video since harrismonkey hit 30mph in his 2CV....thanx
Mark Stevenson 599 could also be had with a gated manual
I stand corrected...according to Wikipedia, 30 were made.
True, but the car was designed for the F1 gearbox and I have heard from a credible source that the 599 and also the 612 were horrible to drive with a manual gearbox.
575 also had manuals available... dunno about the 599 being horrible to drive, the videos I've seen suggest it's fine. No idea about the 612.
My source is a Ferrari dealer. He told me, the later cars (575 and even more so the 599 and 612) were designed around and for the F1 gearbox, the ECU and the whole set up where not programmed for a manual gearbox, hence the F1 suits the cars much better. Apparently the 550 was the last "real" manual gearbox Ferrari...
There is only few people that i watch their videos and listen. the others you just want to fast forward through the non sense. Great video Harry.
Still a dream car today. Wonderful review; your enthusiasm for the car really shows through, and it is clearly deserving of it.
I check nearly everyday for new uploads! Fantastic(:
Thats how a car interior should be ,simple and functional ,not like the starship enterprise full of switches ,knobs and screens that no one ever uses
It's a beautiful interior design
That was my favorite car in NFS High Stakes
Mine too at the time I was fortunate enough to sit in one for real back in 1999 when I went to a car show. It was the same color as this too I remember. :)
So highly appreciated, yourself as well as your 550! Thank you for sharing your passion! And I can´t start to tell you about my strong emotions about that open gated gear box! That feeling, that sound! And stroooongg loong V12 legs.. (Getting carried away, sorry!)
Awesome Harry 👍. Always fun to watch you and your choice of cars !
The Tywin Lannister of the car world.
Love this car, and why have I only just found this channel?
None of this "HI I'M DOUG DEMURO!! BLAH BLAH BLAH! MONEY MONEY MONEY!"(silly joke) (racist joke) (gets all fact wrong) (knows nothing about cars) (has an IQ of 85)
what a breath of fresh air this channel is.
Buffalo Because America. We do things with a touch more subtlety here in Blighty 👍
Not to get too literary on you, but to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, " Doug Demuro knows the price of everything and the value of nothing" while Harry is exactly the opposite. He can appreciate the value of the Ferrari without having to say, "Why the 550 Maranello is worth some outrageous figure he pulled out of.... " I don't look at Demuro's videos any more because he's so annoying.
AMEN! Peter L - I totally agree.
Yeah, Doug's channel overall idea isn't all that bad, but he truly is annoying. Also I find that every single button inside a car doesn't deserve 5 min rant like he does....
I'm in heaven! I have discovered people who find Doug as irritating as I do!
You really offer an extra level of insight on top of the usual (best on YT) level here, Harry. Very nice.
Since everybody else in the comments seem to post wishes I figure I should as well. It would be magical to hear you talk us through the 288 GTO - easily the best proportioned car Maranello has produced (and a video of that would be much more special than a F40 one). I realize it's not a particularly common car (lol), but since we're throwing wishes around...
Harry, you are such a joy to watch. The way you show everything about the car, goes to show the time and passion you have spent in these glorious machines...!!! 😀🔝👍🚗💨
Nice Ferrari 512BBi (white one) in the back, can't wait for the review!
What a lovely car!
Great video.
Harry, you are an exceptional source of information. Thanks for making these videos.
Harry, your videos make me very happy. Keep up the good work!
Harry, I'd kill for you to do a review of the 360 that's always hiding in the garage. Cheers!
This is my favorite Ferrari of all time
Favorite modern Ferrari.
Looks very liveable. Very understated. I'd delete the emblems. If you know, you know. This car doesnt need to say "Ferrari" on it.
Harry, great video as ever and really well done - your videos can't come soon enough! In the same vein as your motorbike videos that changed tack a little, would be great to get a review of your watch collection one day... Keep up the great work and thanks
Ace review again Harry! Ace presenter. There's lots of car shows and you tubers could do with your experience. Thanks Harry!

@@harrysgarage Thanks to your Mr Harry, Tyrrell´s Classic Car Workshop!
Some classy journalism that was.
I love the way you review cars and take them on adventures. You are an adult with a love for cars not a wannabe hip guy who needs the latest lambo to show of to his instagramm followers or something.
You are calm and yet enthusiastic about it. I love it!
Simply the best vids out there, thanks Harry
such a great looking, elegant car.
Great video! Please make a video review of your recent Alfa Giulia pick up! Thank you
Absolutely fantastic video as usual Harry. I have to admit, of course they are totally different cars in every way, but when you put the car in 4th at tickover it reminded me of when you did that in the Zonda, except you brought it all the way to sixth!
Love the video, and nice to hear you actually drove your 550 instead of treating it like a museum piece. Personaly, I like the styling of the 456 (pre-facelift) more than the 550.
"When I needed an everyday usable Ferrari" emphasis on needed lol
I wonder how much is going for the 6 speed transmission conversions to the 550/575 nowadays
Smoke 'em
lol you don't need it
All 550 were manuals 575 were mostly Autos but the conversion is waaaay to expensive to really consider it
All 550's were manuals, and only a small handfull of 575's were manuals.
Love how you do a firey burnout just after noting the horrible tire wear! Enjoying your videos keep up the great work!
These 550’ are about to soar in prices. One of the prettiest Ferrari’s ever made
Its crazy how valuable these are, but a v12 Mercedes of the era, is worth $3000
04dram04 yeah my friend just got a '96 S600 V12 at auction for $3000 Canadian, absolutely ridiculous, probably because it's an old luxury car before a classic performance car
04dram04 thats because the oil coolers leak and cost several thousand to repair, also the coil packs are about $1000 each. The suspensions cost $10,000 to replace, its a maintenance nightmare when they get old.
He said Destro!!! Lolol
They're not sexy, don't rev to 7500rpm
V8
It's because they are luxury cars so it's muffled up to be quiet. The 6.0L V12 is the same one used in the first Zonda so it's possible to make the luxo-barge S600 sound like it with a new exhaust system.
Back when Ferrari built proper cars.
Amen!
@@revolutionday1 Fuck yes !
One of the Best automobile channels. Thanx Harry!
You did it again!! great vid. I just can't say enough good things about your real world, real exotic car reviews. And there is something about car's with 20y, that are now becoming very interesting, because they are pretty actual in several terms but still with lots of analog inputs, which we came to love and desire in this digital era we live in. If I would be nit picking, I could just say that considering the kind of cars you usually review, you could have a better MIC, probably a personal (in-shirt) MIC (I don't know the exact designation), for a better and more clear sound when you're pushing the car. Other than this, I don't have anything else to pick on, or even suggest. Just great vid in the end. Thx, for this.
Tried convincing my boss to by one of these about 10 years ago. He bought a red 360 with F1 gearbox instead.......TWONK
He shudda promoted you for that suggestion
Pretty good, but I have got to disagree with you about when Luca di Montezimolo arived on the scene. He was Enzo's right hand man at the age of 26 in about 1973. He subsequently ran the whole Ferrari outfit including the F1 side extremely well for decades until the thuggish, not very intelligent head of parent company Fiat Auto, Sergio Marcchione decided that Ferrari exclusivity & desirability (Which has everything to do with used car prices, hence desirability when new) were very secondary considerations to short term profit, & production should increase by 40%. di Montezimolo didn't agree, so di Montezimolo was booted out With a 26 million Euro fu** off gift. A bit too early to accurately assess the long-term effects & implications of this move, but I doubt if it will enhance Ferrari's reputation in the long term.
Frank Cree - you are both in fact correct but Harry was of course referring to LdM's return to Ferrari after doing other jobs in the Fiat empire & The Americas cup & Italia 90 etc
I love Harry’s attention to detail. He appreciates and sees things that not many do.
Something funky about this vid Harry, either the autofocus or lighting, made my eyes hurt watching this one, never had a problem on your other vids tho ?
Lovely review thanks :)
Pointless factoid No. 1000076b; the exact same Momo airbag steering wheel was fitted to the Honda Integra Type R.
MrGrentch that’s why it looked familiar
So what. It's a great steering wheel. The difference was that this was clad in proper Italian leather. Speedline also made wheels for lesser brands. So what?

I'm sure the fog lights on the 550 cost more than my 2017 V6 Honda Accord Coupe. Beautiful car, nonetheless.
And I bet in the real world your Honda is faster, more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than the Ferrari. Supercars are cartoon cars.

This is such a nice refreshing video, full of knowledge and passion for the subject. Thank you
Always a classy review Harry, and nice angle, like to see al the dashboard.
i am not an expert, but for me thats the last ferrari!
AMEN!
The truly classy, graceful lines from Ferrari's beginning in the late 1940's through the early/mid-90's were the most attractive years, in my opinion. The onset of 4-wheeled video games with exaggerated sculptures and electric hybrids are just a different vehicle and, to me, are a totally different class of machine. Many like them but the appeal just doesn't reach me like the earlier era... and not just with the Ferrari, but many of the other cars of those same periods.
Harry's style and this fine older Ferrari fit together like "hand-in-glove." I happened to be in San Francisco traffic for a couple of miles down 19th Avenue one sunny afternoon, along side one of these when they were brand new. I thought then that it was one of the classiest cars I'd ever seen and my opinion hasn't diminished the slightest bit since then. It is one of Ferrari's finest ever. It's too bad that Enzo didn't live long enough to have seen it. I think he would have approved very much!
''When i needed a everyday usable Ferrari'' :)
Thanks Harry! One of my favorite Ferrari's when I was a kid, and a very under-rated car IMHO
Great video H, I enjoyed that.
I was wondering if you would mention the evolution into the 575 and you came up with the goods at the end, perfect!
