  • I changed around some of the anisotropy (particle warping) calculations in 0.4b so they look a lot cleaner at smaller radii. The default radius will remain at 10 (like in other videos) but its nice to be able to scale particles now without weird-ish visuals

      Source engine might as well be its own operating system at this point it's so ubiquitous and the modifications for it are so easy to do if you know what you're doing, there's probably an exponential curve of technology in Gmod, on the fly water physics in Gmod is something I never would have thought possible in 2011

    I doubt its possible but it'd be crazy to see the water dissolve when it touches ground and for the ground to become a bit darker for a while to make it look like a puddle or something. Gwater 2 feels more convincing than like 99% of water physics in games and it's in this old engine from 2003 but the biggest problem is that it feels like everything is coated in aerogel. It's one of the features im not expecting will happen but knowing Mee and how crazy this guy is he's probably already been brainstorming solutions for this exact thing for months now.

    • @Milbyte11
      @Milbyte11 2 месяца назад +1

      correct me if im wrong but i remember mee mentioning that the info he gets on particle hit is very limited so i doubt it includes the material/texture in that hitinfo.

    • @trashtrash2169
      @trashtrash2169 2 месяца назад

      Isn't that just because of the color? It'd look more realistic if it was just clear. Then the surface would just look wet. Only the concrete would get darker, but it would also still be glossy for a while.

    • @Meetric1
      @Meetric1  2 месяца назад +16

      I've been brainstorming since gwater1, I have yet to think of a (non performance obliterating) solution.

    • @xentrix89
      @xentrix89 2 месяца назад

      I only know A little bit of unity but i could make it switch to another particle system on collision that has the darker color/texture the particle system can be timed to show the water get dark to light as it "drys" aswell the water would need a dissolve effect on hit aswell that might be another particle system depends

    Another crazy good video man your killing it.
    Something to think about implementing could be some sort of absorption system for stray particles. For example in the instance where the small bit of fluid is stuck to the rim of the tub at 0:24, those particles might just fade out or shrink in scale until they are no longer visible. Resulting in those small rims and sticky instances of only a few particles fading away, leading to something that might be more realistic, and to my naive mind more performant due to the particles being killed.
    Just some food for thought, keep up the great work!

      C++ "backend" with a Lua "frontend".
      I started making E2 (gmod addon) scripts in 2019 but didn't really start working on Lua and more advanced projects until 2021. This is my second C++ project, with my first being gwater1 (Though most of my work was on researching the FleX interfaces while my friend (other creator) actually did the C++).
      In all honesty all of my programming experience led to this moment.
      -all the small scripting projects helped me grasp the idea of coding
      -gwater1 gave me a good feel for the FleX interface
      -Seamless Portals taught me how to use rendertargets and basic vector math
      -Procedural Terrain taught me collision generation, mesh instancing, UI design, and codebase management
      -InfMap taught me how to properly manage an API and what *not* to do when making public APIs
      -The voxel engine (now abandoned) taught me how to properly avoid scope creep (eg. FULLY define your scope BEFORE making a project)
      -I did a few videos on EGSM right before gwater2 which was a shader base that let me get into basic custom shader creation
      And in the middle I had school projects which taught me Java and manual memory management. C++ is actually really easy to grasp when you know the basic concepts.
      Anyways, thats my long rant. Thanks for asking

      I'm running on 10 year old hardware, if your GPU is any better than a GTX 970 you'll run it fine

    This water simulation looks better than blender's lol

    Yo… Add sound effects, drying on the ground and the ability to swim in there and boom. The most realistic water mod ever.

    I'm amazed by what people can do with a 20-year-old engine. First infmap, now this.

    Only thing I'll comment on that should probably be changed is that the water doesn't really look metallic as real water does - the reflections and fresnel seem very toned down. The blue tint also makes it look like gel of some sort, even if it's more visible that way. Remember, the blue in water just comes from it reflecting the sky. Otherwise tap water would look blue too, and yet it just looks like flowing glass.
    Can't wait to try this myself though.

      Reflections aren't very powerful since they rely soley on the cubemap.
      Unfortunately, screen space reflections are impossible because I do not have access to a proper depth buffer
