Ken, I had a really rough day and came home to find my fiancée upset because her brake light went out. Of course I had to fix it for her. Your demeanor in this video reminded me of when my grandfather used to teach me garage skills as a kid. Made my day a little easier. Thank you sir.
Ken! Came to RUclips for the instructions for my 2015 Forester brake light. Great job dude ! 4 years ago I bet you didn’t think people would still be using your video. What I found interesting was that a few instructions say to pry the light housing out of a clip. But you clearly show it simply sliding off and back on the clip! Anyway. Well filmed, well edited clear instructions.
@@justmont6635 Funny you should say that..I had to change my Brake light bulb again this weekend. I was disappointed that it didn't last longer!!! UGH!!

Didn't know what to do when my Brake light went out. saw your video and thought that looks easy...went and bought one and replace it in less then an hour..Wonderful instructions, easy to follow and I'm feeling pretty good!! Thanks Ken for the instructions
Thank you for this simple and straight forward tutorial video! Your instructions were well paced and very helpful. It made it very easy for me, when I had to change out my brake light bulb for the first time on my 2010 Forester.
Thank you from Assachussettes.😅 I wonder why I bought a repair book, sometimes. God bless you and your family. So simple. Your info is better than the 28 buck book i just bought. Thank you again. 🙏
This was the most helpful of all instructions I've seen so far , except I did take the tip to slide a thin strap behind the mechanism to assist with sliding it out, because there is no way of obtaining a good hold on it. Maybe if I wore better grip gloves it wold work, but the strap behind it made it really easy. No need for wedging it open with some tool. Replacing the bulb and sliding it all back in again was the easiest. No problem. Thank you for the demo. With my 2014 Forester approaching 10 years and this is the first time I had to replace a bulb in the rear, I am now thinking of replacing all of them soon. Considering how easy the whole process is, I won't be delaying it much longer either. Thanks again.
This video is gold! From the type of bulb to the size of ratchet, removal with the clip caution and the bulb removal I was able to do it all in one go - by myself! THANK YOU! 💐
What a sweetheart you are to make this video! Thank you so much - you have a servant's heart. I will do this myself instead of paying my great mechanic who I save for the hard stuff! We seniors must economise so this is an extra thank you for the economic aspect.
Back from the store, summoned up my courage, and it's done! I did have to work a bit to get the assembly disengaged from the car but by putting my weight against it, I could then push it off laterally. If that makes sense?! Can't thank you enough, Ken.
just changed both brake lights on my '12 forester and your instructions were perfect. screwdriver didn't budge the screw portion of bolt, so went to socket wrench and they came off like nothing. job took 5 min.
So cool to hear that it help you..Thanks for sharing that...and god luck with your future projects, It amazing how easy things are when you know what you are doing!!
@@Backyardprojectguy so easy and rewarding. been learning as much as I can about my subaru and have been doing most the work myself with help from videos like this. thank you for the content.
Thank you! I changed the rear brake light bulb on my 2012 Forester in minutes thanks to your video. I did need a plastic putty knife to pop the mechanism out. Who knows what my mechanic would have charged. 🙏🏻🙌🏻🪛
Worked fine on a 2010 Forester. Comments talking about getting the unit loose by rocking it many times (and not breaking the plastic clip, too) were most useful. My 3/8 inch ratchet didn't work on the bolts (didn't have the metric), but a big vice-grip pliers did get it started enough to use the Phillips head screwdriver. Thanks!
Bought my bulbs on eBay. LEDs. I ended up bending one of the pins in the bulb socket trying to get it in. Had to make a little hook from a paper clip to pull it back out. Then got the new bulb in. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this myself!
Thanks so much for this video. I was so sure that's how that piece came off, but I have a real bad habit of breaking things when applying any kind of force to them. Seeing you pull the cover off without breaking it let me know I was right and just had to pull that little bit harder.
@@Backyardprojectguy I actually just changed both sides. The hardest thing for me was pulling the side panel up and off. But I got it off and back on without breaking anything🤩👍
Thx Ken! I did both my Forester brake lights when one finally went at 8yo, and I had to careful insert a flathead screwdriver in fabric on the front side of the assembly to goose em both out, then easy peasy.
Nice video, well explained, good pacing - great video. As others have commented, don't touch the bulb and the job is easier with a 10mm socket esp if one's Soob is not as clean and pristine as yours is :) Your assembly popped right off, if it's cold and snowy out it can be much, much harder to get the assembly off the car esp. the first time.
So glad to hear that the video helped you..That's what it is all about..Helping people saving Time and Money..Thanks for the comment and letting me know!!Good luck with other projects going forward.

Yesterday, dealer wanted $56 for this 5 minute fix. I figured if it wasn't self-explanatory, the solution would be on youtube, and declined. However, I was always led to understand that halogen bulbs shouldn't be handled with bare hands, something about skin oils causing hot spots on the glass and premature failure. Since the pack of Sylvania 7443LL had several icons on the back, one of which was apparently gloves, I erred on the side of caution. I had no metric sockets, and found neither a 3/8 nor a 7/16 workable. I found the top screw to be overtightened (on the other taillight, too), but a large blunt tip Phillips bit got them both loose unscathed with some tenacity. I would also recommend first masking off the bumper cover below the taillight assembly. Once it was detached and hanging down, the sharp inner edge of the black plastic housing made some light scratches in the paint. Probably removable with polishing compound, but more trouble than some painter's tape and newspaper.
Great video! Just a quick question, car noob here... aren't you supposed to wear gloves when touching the new bulb? I thought the oils from your hands could cause the bulb to burn out more quickly. Thanks!
