I wish more Jerry Goldsmith music should be played in concert. Nothing against John Williams or Ennio Morricone but there are other brilliant film composers whose works never or seldom being played which is a damn shame.
I would dearly love to see ST-TMP's soundtrack performed live with a screening of the Director's Cut...now THAT would be something. I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly.
This is such a flawless performance! The orchestration! The timing. The smiles on the faces of the orchestra and conductor! One of the best live renditions of Jerry’s amazing theme.
I doubt that. The great composers didn't rely on people to help them orchestrate their music. Popular success doesn't automatically put you in the same class as Bach or Beethoven - especially if your work is essentially in one finite type of music: film scores. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁🧡🍁
@@TheStockwell the difference is film composers like Jerry Goldsmith were often working so much and so fast that he didn't have time to compose and orchestrate but he did write in very detailed 9-line sketches which a trusted orchestrator like Arthur Morton could flesh out. Morton knew how Jerry liked his instruments arranged so he basically followed Goldsmith's template. There were a few times in which Goldsmith orchestrated his own scores and the Final Conflict was one of them. That score stands as a pinnacle of Goldsmith's command of an orchestra so I'm confident he knew exactly how to arrange and orchestrate his own music. It is generally acknowledged that Goldsmith's orchestrators were glorified copyists, and their role "stenographic" (to use John Williams' description). Aaron Copland also worked this way when scoring films, and even Mahler wrote his concert works in sketch form, with an assistant (in this case his wife Alma) serving as "orchestrator" (i.e. copying it out onto full score). Interviewed about his score for Poltergiest in CinemaScore magazine by Randall D. Larson, Goldsmith was asked: RDL: Did you orchestrate any of the score yourself? JG: In the physical sense, no; in the technical sense, yes. Meaning that I write it on a nine-line sketch with all the instruments indicated, and then Arthur Morton, who works with me on all the pictures, transfers it to the orchestral scores.
@@TheStockwell: Oh, Jesus Christ -- Jerry largely did the orchestrator's work for him; besides which -- a film scorer as busy as Jerry has only several weeks to write an entire symphony that is syncopated to a movie to a fraction of a second. Bach & Co. *never* had to do that. . . .
This “ending” music, also became the “musical theme” for the tv series, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (starring Patrick Stewart, before he was knighted)
My 35th birthday was yesterday (although I've been celebrating all week, LOL). I have a lot of friends, and each day this past week was devoted to spending time with different friends. Most notably, this past Sunday, I and a group of about ten other people met up and played bowling and lazer tag at our local recreation center. I even had a backstory where we were the crew of the USS Aries, fighting the Borg on an alien world. I'd been looking for the perfect theme music for this past week of celebrations, and I most definitely found it. I was looking for a concert of Star Trek music composed by Jerry Goldsmith but performed by an orchestra in the past year. I was NOT expecting to find such a concert, let alone one so competently and beautifully performed. This was the perfect final gift from the past week of festivities!
Well, I'm 54 years now, Trek fan for years.... And a bit shamed to say, Didn't know this score is the same as the Theme of Star Trek The Next Generation..... SORRY.....But I won't ever forget it now..... I do know a lot from the early years in scripts comes back in the today's adventures of the many spin offs of Star Trek, which each of them I like..... Especially the Themes, so, please do a full concert of All the Star Trek Music and Themes..... This was AWESOME, Thank You..... What would a Motion Picture or Serie Episode be, without you people and your instruments.....
Superb performance not spoiled by poor tempo or embellishments by the conductor. It has been played and conducted just as Jerry would have done, back in 1978. Bravo to the orchestra and the conductor. Professionalism at its finest. Also Gene Roddenberry would have enjoyed this live performance. An orchestra and conductor comprising many different groups of the human family coming together to create music...diversity creating symphonic magic. He just would have loved it!
Liebe WDR Klassik!
I'm going to hire this orchestra to play all the best tracks at my funeral and require everyone to attending wear a custom fitted uniforms , no exceptions, or no admittance. More than likely, they will play for my cadaver in a custom-made torpedoe coffin because no one buys the fitted uniforms😂
Goldsmith original work for Star Trek in 1979 had nothing to do with a TV show (i.e. the old Alexander Courage Theme for "The Original Series"). Actually it was the other way round because the "The Motion Picture" - Theme became the theme for "The Next Generation" TV series (in 1987).
@@josealvarez9517 i thought I had to remind you because your statement "Goldsmith took a TV show intro and rebuilt it...." sounds like Goldsmith' work is based on it...i hope you see where I am coming from....I just meant he literaly started from scretch and created the original TMP score. i.e. he took nothing from the TV show.
This has got to be the best Star Trek theme ever.

That was beautiful. The Motion Picture theme music is so moving.
Thank you!
Only Jerry Goldsmith could write music like this. He was one of the absolute greatest in film music!
He went before his time but he left loads of fantastic music to listen to, shame about his son also,he started doing music like his father.

Whoo! An iconic masterpiece of a work there that the musicians make sound have true flare!
Watching Star Trek: The Motion Picture might be boring, but maybe we just need to listen to it. The soundtrack to this movie is brilliant!
So beautiful…….. Jerry Goldsmith was just an amazing composer! I can’t help it but to be mesmerized.
I didn't know the algorithm was going to bring me this gem. So many good memories.

This was my all time favorite theme for Star Trek. The Motion Picture was an underrated gem as far as I am concerned.
Jerry Goldsmiths classic has lasted for decades. Bravo to the orchestra; well done 👏🖖

Jerry Goldsmith would be thrilled with this performance. My ears find it indistinguishable from the original.
I saw TMP in the cinema recently after many many years and the music made up for all the other cons in the film. See it at the cinema if you can!

Deep Space 9
Ot The Next Generation

Goldsmith took a TV show intro and rebuilt it into the definitive Star Trek theme. His range of work beats Williams in my opinion.
