I used your pipe trick today to loosen my caps on my Yamaha 150. Worked like a charm! Thanks for all of the great tips and videos Eric. I’m glad I found your channel!
Me too the tool kept slipping out, I couldn't keep it from popping out. Put a pipe on like TheBoatGuy suggested and it took some extra strength but the cap spun without slipping! Thanks!!
To all the people who have leaking trim seals and think this video is showing you how stop your leak with the seal he replaced, it's not. He only replaced the dust seal, the seal that holds the trim fluid and pressure is down below the dust seal inside the cap and he never replaced it and it's much more important than the seal he shows in the video. Make sure you buy ALL the seals and replace them or you're wasting your time like this guy just did.
What could be some of the issues if you've replaced these seals in the video, plus the one you are referring to, and it worked for a month or two then starting hemorrhaging fluid again?
I love this video, so much. There have to be at least two dozen others out there, all with (I'm sure) pluses and minuses, but you made this task so easy to understand and I'm fully confident now that I can do this repair myself. Thank you!
Thank you for the very informative video. With your help, I replaced the seal and O-rings for my trim/tilt today on my Yamaha F250. I used your pipe trick as my caps were on extremely tight. My caps had a retainer clip in a groove I had to remove first. Thanks again.
Great vid Eric. I just replaced my trim seals ,,watched this before,,getting out the old seals from the caps would have been a challenge if I didn't see your vid, thx.
Just ordered that tool a couple of days ago, looking forward to using it. My system is different, but the principal is the same. Thanks for the video...
I am working on mine right now. The the Trim side of the project was easy. I cannot figure out how to get the large trim ram fixed. I can’t figure out how to take apart the sub assembly, to put in new seals, and stop the leak. Any luck?
I had trim fluid leaking from the center column that has the rod that mounts to the motor. I replaced the dust seal, the seal beneath it, and the outer seal for the cap, all the other seals looked good. It worked for a few trips out, about a month or two in time, and then it started hemorrhaging fluid again and I ran out of trim fluid at the dock loading the boat back onto it. What are some of the reasons/fixes that could be for that? I am new to boats and outboards so, forgive me in advance. Thank you and I enjoy all your videos.
I have a 2013 Yamaha F70 4 stroke with a single ram tilt that is leaking badly. My cap does not have holes on it. Could I send a picture to get your opinion on how to remove?
@assassinlexx yeah I called The marina and they said they use power steering fluid if it’s just because it’s little low also herd Marvel mystery oil is good to from a guy working on outbords his whole life
One other question -- I didn't see a video on the process for swapping out a tilt/trim *motor* on your site. Or is that such a trivial matter that you didn't need to create one?
Gday mate i know this is an old video but i have an 90 40hp that has the same trim and tilt system on it this is invaluable information for me as mine is leaking too , those trim spanners are about 80.00 here in aus . Now i know what model to look at as none of the 40hp have this trim system (maybe of another motor) i will be able to get the parts i need to fix it , the trim motor is really sad covered in rust but still works so there is another 400.00 but with the cost of a new motor at around 8000.00 im gonna try to keep this one going .
I love your videos man!! Very informative and interesting. I have searched the tube for videos describing a timing belt change. Preferably on a four stroke Yamaha outboard but I can’t find any. Can you please make one when you get at opportunity?? /Daniel from Växjö Sweden
so I would have to jack up the trailer that my boat is on to get the canister that holds the fluid in to get it level? also I noticed you didn't mention the longer rod in the rear of the ones you replaced the seals on, do we need to change that one as well? Thanks
Place Motor so the fill hole is 90 degrees vertical to horizontal line. Remove fill hole plug fill until overflow. Install fill hole plug Cycle System several times. return motor to Vertical position remove fill hole plug check fluid level top off as needed. Apply small amount of thread lock to plug install fill hole plug do not over tighten
How do I get to the center seal. I have the pistol rod in my hand, I'm not sure how to get the end off. There is no screw on the end, but I see a small pin. Does the pin need to come out? I have a 1988 90ETLG Yamaha. Thank you
Love the videos thank you! This helped me with my 2001 250 Saltwater series. Do you have any recommendations for Yamaha used parts dealers online or I can call? There has to be a used Yamaha parts store . I am unable to locate one here in Texas.
I have this same engine and some how while I was using it this weekend I lost one of the pistons for the tilt and trim. Any idea if I can still get replacements?
Thank you . Very informative. My 70 ya my has the same trim tilt. When trimming , there seems to be some delays before it moves, something like 3 to 4 secs. Is this normal ?
Hi there :) great Video! I have an Yamaha F40 BETL 2004 and need such like Tool you promote. Cant find it in Germany. Maybe you have some web links for me to find Tool. Distance needs to be 38milimetres and pins with 4milimitres. Thanks in Advance, York
Nice video just wanna ask some question please.. the oil for the lower unit it’s the same oil to use for the trim seal ??please answer I’m from New Zealand.. Cheers..
I surely don't know for sure but most hydraulic systems are designed to measure the fluid in the reservoir when all hydraulic cylinders are compressed. It seems possible the way you're doing it you could easily get too much in the system? Of course access on the system you're working on would be a real pain if that motor was all the way down so possibly you're doing it correctly and it is designed that way?
The procedure is to tilt the motor all the way up and then fill up the reservoir until the oil spills out, then run the engine all the way up and down a couple times and check again.

The motor you sold me is running like charm eric ,was a pleasure meeting you !!! yamaha 115 4 stroke. thank you for share
This is EXACTLY what I needed to watch. Currently doing this exact job. Good descriptions and you made it look easy. Great job bro 😎

Great vid Eric. I just replaced my trim seals ,,watched this before,,getting out the old seals from the caps would have been a challenge if I didn't see your vid, thx.
The top seal is just a static wiper seal the oil is bypassing on the piston seal. If there was any pressure on that seal it would just pop out.
Since you replace the cap seals, why did you not replace the piston seals on the rod as well?
Great video, now I have already changed the seals, thanks
Excellent video, great camera work, excellent commentary , nice and clear and the tool link is a nice touch.
Nice 👍 even though it's old it's still very helpful🤓 makes me feel like I'm a you tube marine mechanic thanks to you🤠👍
Just ordered that tool a couple of days ago, looking forward to using it. My system is different, but the principal is the same. Thanks for the video...
What size tool did you wind up getting? I see different sizes. Thanks
Have you ever done a video on servicing / seal replacement for the tilt cylinder on the yamaha 90 2 stroke? Getting ready to tackle that soon. Thx.
I am working on mine right now. The the Trim side of the project was easy. I cannot figure out how to get the large trim ram fixed. I can’t figure out how to take apart the sub assembly, to put in new seals, and stop the leak. Any luck?
Thank you! That pipe trick saved me pn my -96 70hp 6h3/6h1 combo. Thanks!
How do I know when I have to service my trim tabs?
I wished you were u here helping me
Yes you did a great job 👍 on The video easy to follow
Thanks for all the part numbers on the seals
You look so much like my Sone. Handsome man. Thanks for the info on those seals. I have to replace mine soon. Thank you. I subscribed to your channel.

Thanks for the video! I successfully changed my seals out this morning.
Did you change out the middle one?
@@russudvp Negative. However, I now at least have proper pin/spanner wrench if I need to get in there.
@@jayboogie27 how do I send you a picture of what I'm trying to do. I'm stumped.

Very informative video thanks

Search ebay, tilt seal tool. Should come up, including the one he used. About $100aud
Great job.....ciao
can you use thoose rings and seals on a yamaha around 2000 model trim too
One other question -- I didn't see a video on the process for swapping out a tilt/trim *motor* on your site. Or is that such a trivial matter that you didn't need to create one?
Do I need a different bracket to install a power trim unit Yamaha on a non original power trim bracket?

Where did you get the tool from ? I need one like yours that is adjustable and cannot find one !!
Is this for a Yamaha "6h1-10" or a 6h1-somethings else? Can't see in the video
Thank you very much! Easy and very well explained!
Thank you very much. Great clear precise video.

hi eric i'm trying to remove the ( MANUAL RELEASE SCREW) and there is a snap ring i have to get out ..have some tips... Yamaha 1987 115ETLH

Good info tx
What a fantastic video. Thank you.
Hey mate, what microphone are you using in your videos?
Awesome video, thanks for the help
Need name model # of wrench you're using
What about the main rod seal is that more difficult
If one of the cylinders have water in It how do you get It cleaned out? No way to push oil thru it until it’s clean?
👍👍
The caps don't have to be super tight, just a little past snug. The oring and the seal are the seal. Also don't put teflon tape on the threads.
yamaha 85hp same?

What is the name of the tool?
How much for that 90

I noticed that many of the of the outboards in your videos are Yamahas. Is that a coincidence or do you seek out Yamaha motors?
