- On 1 April 1992, Diana, Princess of Wales and Prince Charles, Prince of Wales attended the funeral of Diana's father, John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Great Brington, Northamptonshire. The Princess of Wales was joined by her brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer; her sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes Tuck; and the late John Spencer's second wife, Raine Spencer (née McCorquodale). After the service, ITN's cameras captured the floral tributes and messages of remembrance left by Charles and Diana as well as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

You meant his daughter. He knew her marriage wasn't that wonderful. It is likely that the subject of divorce came up, it was only a matter of time before it came to fruition. John knew there was a lot of hurt and revenge in his daughter's heart. It was not healthy. He, as a father, hoped that she would find some happiness - not the illusion of it. She was not happy when she died and this was confirmed by those who were close to her. Those photos on the pages of newspapers and magazines were just that, a façade.

@@mariec.albuquerque6446 the marriage was engineered by Earl Spencer’s mother in law, like all bullies, he was a very weak ineffectual man p, he was left in acute financial distress when he became Earl through crippling death duties, it was Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles saved them, otherwise Althorp Would have been sold. It was, in essence, nit a marriage but a business contract.

@bellaflor8528. This flashes me back to the funeral of Aristotle Onassis in 1975 when Jackie Onassis smiled and giggled throughout almost his entire ceremony! I think Jackie probably wanted everyone to know that JFK was her real love but it only conveys someone who was thoughtless and ungrateful - all that giggling was very harsh!! Onassis' daughter, Christina was badly hurt by Jackie and I could see why! When Jackie returned to the USA she issued a press release stating something about how grateful she was to have Onassis in her life. Hmmm. Then why didn't Jackie show it? She wasn't there for him for hospital visits except for maybe once or twice and for her last visit Onassis supposedly, told Jackie what he really thought of her and their marriage and their relationship in general. Good for Mr. Onassis!!
As for Raine Spencer... well I honestly can't figure this one out. Maybe she was just nervous with the cameras around? Also I think Diana and her sisters and her brother were at odds with Raine for decades. Diana and Raine were very controlling women by nature so they fought fiercely. The Earl Spencer was probably in the middle of their fights. I'm guessing that Johnny Spencer never handled personal problems too well - he may have been somewhat of an "emotional cripple."

It us what you call a "grimace" and is an expression of intense emotion, and possibly fear.
You dont see the expression very often so most people do not recognise it when they see it
However, older people will recall in the days when boys were sebt to be caned by the headmaster, a typical comment would be "How dare you stand there grinning! Think you're smart do you? Hold out your hand!"
THAT is the expression.
Poor Raine. She was the one who was with him to the end. And here, noone in the family holds out a habd to her, or comforts her, except Charles. She is in a very lonely position.
Subsequently, Diana had all her possessions put into garbage bags and put OUTSIDE the huge house for her to have them picked up.

I'm not surprised - after her divorce Diana threw all of Charles's good chinaware in trash bags and took a hammer to the bags and supposedly said to her friend "Paul let's go through all of Charles's money!" She was destroying a few things of his according to Paul Burrell. Diana had no class!!

Darling Daddy was probably the reason why Diana was so messed up mentally. He gained parental control of his children, but wasn’t a caring parent. Effectively, he made sure his former wife had little access to her children because she left them due to his bullying behaviour.
Her mother did try to visit, but no one ever opened the door.
Tragic.
It also appears that he was more interested in marrying his immature, mentally unstable daughter into the Royal Family than he was in getting her the help she needed to be able to live a satisfying and useful life.
He was a domestic abuser which was enabled by the aristocracy and the government.

Diana marrying into the Royal Family saved them from financial ruin, Charles Spencer made a fortune out of his sisters death , he is. Is selling the family’s London home for £10 million. They have some serious personality issues which ru through the family, look at Harry!

As an artist, who studies people's facial expressions, I can tell you that Raine foes not look happy. She is extremely stressed and has good reason to be.
1. She is stressed because she has list her husband.
2. She has to hold it together and greet a number of the nobility, and probably some people who she does not know, but who are high status. Including the Prince of Wales.
3. Spencer's four children are there, and they are not exactly nice to her.
4. Diana has previously physically assaulted her at a family wediing.
5. Because Diana is there, so are the paparazzi.
6. She is about to get kicked out of her home. I do not know what provision the Earl had made for her, after his death.
So altogether, she has reason to be stressed. When a person is trying to hold it all together, it causes them to get a stupid grin (called a "grimace"). Luvkily this is not an expression that we see very often .... but it is the way a brave oerson looks when they face a firing squad.
In the old days, when schoolboys used to be caned, the Headmaster would say, "Stanford, get that stupid grin off your face and hold your hand out!" and poor Stanford would get six of the best.
Just because she is smiling does not mean that she is happy. She is the "hostess" of this big get together and has to greet and thank everyone that showed up. She was also raised with the "classy" people that do not show their unhappiness like that in public.

Diana pushed her stepmother, Rain(?) down the stairs bc Diana was angry with her. And angry with her own bio mother. But when Diana wanted her real mom, the real mom ignored Diana. Well, that didn't turn out good, and Diana went back to Rain (?). Rain ended up being nicer to her than Diana's real mom after all.

Francis left the family bc of her adultery. Raine remarried to Diana's dad. Party going on at a royal residence. The step mom, according to Diana, didn't pay enough attention to the ex wife, ( bio mom). Raine was pushed, sustained injuries. The real mom was estranged, and she didn't like Diana's dating Muslims, and called her daughter a whore. In the end, Raine was a confidante of Diana. Raine supported Dodi and Diana.

As Charles Spencer was now Earl , the Countess’s clothes were taken out of the trunks into which they had been packed and put into rubbish bags. Her husband was ill for a long time. He had a stroke not long before he walked Diana down the aisle. Perhaps it was a relief that he was no longer suffering. We are not allowed to tell others how to deal with death.
Raine remained devoted to her husband all through his illness. She was treated abysmally by the Spencer children. It is a very, very unwholesome family. All of them, including Diana, had longstanding mental health issues.

Yes, because she was a decent person and he's a completely piece of garbage as he still is today which I'm sure his 3 or 4 wives can attest to.
He and Diana sent her packing immediately. Raine was permitted to take things out of the house only if she could provide proof of purchase. Diana (probably wrongly) had Raine's things taken out of a couple of Louis Vuitton trunks with an "S" monogram, then packed into black garbage bags, which her brother kicked down the stairs. They were so ungracious.

Raine Spencer packed her personal possessions in trunks, which Saint Diana said didn’t belong to her, she put them in bags and dumped them …..that funeral must have been hell for Raine.

Francis tried to reason with Diana to not marry into the royal family. Francis knew first hand what royalty and the media could do to your privacy and health. It's sad that her second marriage failed also - just when you think you have found happiness after coming out of something so horrendous as Johnny Spencer ( and Diana ).
Darling Daddy was a wife beating bully lest not forget. Children went to live with their mother her own mother and Earl Spencer ganged up on said mother to the judge who handed them back to daddy. Kids messed up forever with him there you have it and he lived many more years than expected thanks to Raine Spencer’s care RS saved Althrop from broke house to rich house. Truth always best.

It was probably a nervous smile to hide what she was really feeling inside. Anybody can react differently from the norm especially during such a time of grief of a loved one.

When he gained custody if his children he immediately sent them all to boarding schools and saw them very infrequently. She didn’t visit him when he was ill , as her sisters would confirm. Look at the footage of John Spencer’s, Diana ignored Raine throughout,after she had cared for him the four of them told her she had a week to get out of Althorp. She packed her clothing in trunks which were the Earls, Diana put them into black plastic bags . That was the real Diana. I knew Frances Shand briefly she was a thoroughly decent woman .

She did not want him to. She didn't even want him to go to the service, but he insisted. By 1992, the couple was leading their separate lives, uniting only for public duties.
Charles was willing to be there for her but probably Diana, wanted the media to come down on Charles had Charles not attended at all. I'm guessing she blocked Charles from the burial so that he could feel uncomfortable with the Earl Spencer's funeral. By this stage of their marriage Diana and Charles had to accept a lot had gone wrong. Diana took her married boyfriends back to Kensington Palace and I feel bad for their innocent wives and children. Those wives should have all gone on Oprah! Instead of Harry and Me-gain. Charles remained with his one true love, Camilla.❤🎉🎉
