I am putting a lot of effort into learning the Yaesu digital system - but it is confusing. Even after reading and watching videos for hours.
When a system requires a lot of specific cables, software, radio models and is able to operate in numerous modes - it really needs a high-level overview that makes sense. So far, I have not found that. All I have seen so far is video and manuals that just dive right into C4FM, PDN, WIRES, HRI, FT5, SCU-39, SCU-40, etc, etc......acronyms, buzzwords, options, limitations that all sound like jibberish.
The questions I still have after hours of looking is: 'Why' and 'what' on almost every topic related to Wires-X.
Why do I need Wires X?
What does it do for me?
    Who uses it?
What do they use it for?
    What is common use case?
What are some common hardware configurations?
What is the deal with the 'donor' radio, what does it accomplish?
Do I need to be in range of a repeater for Wires-X to be useful?
(there are so many more......I just don't have the time to write them all out)
On the interconnect cables, perhaps refer to them by function instead of part numbers. The general public does not necessarily want to memorize part numbers or try to associate the part numbers with a function. Simply referring to the function - 'audio cable', 'mic cable', 'control cable' will help me understand the intent. This is especially true if there are numerous variants that cover a basic function or cable kits that include numerous part numbers.
I still cannot grasp how analog and digital are handled in Wires-X, even though there is a considerable amount or air-time talking about it along with limitations that are not clear.
Either way.....after hours of effort, I walk away with perhaps more confusion than when I started trying to learn this system. As a side note, I am a mixed discipline engineer that designs electronics and mechanical systems for commercial imaging and factory automation. I am immersed in technology and specifically digital communication systems all-day, every day. I feel like I have a reasonable aptitude to learn systems like this.
I hope this is received as constructive as it is not meant to be negative. The capabilities seem interesting, yet confusing and needlessly complicated. Perhaps I have missed something somewhere?

I agree. I'm a computer consultant, and though not specialized in networking, I have a decent understanding of how the internet side of this works, and the WiresX software config seems relatively straightforward, but am still baffled by the hardware requirements.
I can see plugging in one of the FTxx radios to a PC to get into a WiresX room over the internet ('Direct' modes), but to me, that seems somewhat limiting. Also, if I want to talk to people over the internet, there's much easier ways to do it than using a radio plugged into my PC. Using the radio to 'bridge' RF to the internet, however, gets interesting.
I have 2 'WiresX' capable radios - an FT991a in my 'shack' and a FTM-400 for my truck. I have yet to be able to connect either to an existing WiresX node/room in my area. So, now I'm looking to set up my own Node so I can connect to WiresX Rooms, kind of like my own personal WiresX repeater. But, my FT991a, which is right next to and already connected to my PC, cannot act as a 'doner' radio. It would be perfect if I could just put the FT991a into 'Portatble HRI / Access Point mode' and then connect to it from my FTM-400 from the truck, or maybe from a FTxx HT from around the house, but that's not possible w/ the FT991a. I think I now have to add ANOTHER digital radio to my bench, along with another antenna (not easy for me), and connect it to the PC (which now also has to have the WiresX software running constantly, not just 'installed' as per the docs?) in order to be able to have a node to connect to. If I want to do this with any type of range, I think that radio has to be a FTM-300 or FTM-400, otherwise I'm limited to 5W from the HTs(?).
I also still don't see what an HRI-200 adds to the equation, as it still requires the same radios that you can connect directly to the PC w/ the cables John talks about. Is it just an interface to provide DIN connections for radios w/o USB? Can I use it w/ any analog 'donor' radio? And if I have a dedicated piece of HW like the HRI-200, why should I still need a PC and WiresX software (other than to connect and initially configure the device)? And why (per the HRI-200 manuals) would you need to connect it to a DX-2 repeater instead of having all needed functionality built-in to the repeater? I think this is where the 'Hot Spots' come in, though they are limited in power/range, and I don't think connect directly to WiresX rooms(?).
I'm probably missing a few things, but I agree that Yaesu's material on this topic is not really helping...
Edit - I'm also seeing the following reference in the FTM-300 marketing - "The FTM-300DR supports both the WiRES-X Portable Digital Node function and Fixed Node function with the HRI-200." What is Fixed Node, as I can't find any references to this in any of the WiresX documentation for any radio or the HRI-200 - only PDN function?

Can you please help me, everything I watch starts after 3-4 steps are already completed! I have a 300 DR, what software do I need on my laptop? What cable do I need to connect the 300DR to my PC or do I even need to do that ? All I want to do is access a room or node or whatever they are called, I can hit 1-2 Fusion Repeaters close to me. I’ve read everything and still very confused. Can you start from just received the radio, put my call sign into the radio….now how do I hook up to wires x without buying a $200 HR 200? Please help me out and thanks very much

Hello John. First of all, I am a novice about programming and electrical stuff. BS degree in Banking & Finance. So, I learned all Amateur Radio applications the hard way and spent a lot of time understanding the application. I will need to watch this again to let it sink in. I have a FT-3DR, SCU-39 and am using the Sabrent USB Type-C External Stereo Sound Adapter. My laptop is a Microsoft Surface 4 w/ a Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2.00GHz, RAM 8.00 GB. So, I want direction on DIRECT OPERATION HRI where I am using the CT-44 w/ the Black & Gray Cable connected to my Sabrent USB Type-C External Stereo Sound Adapter. I had one of the Yaesu Technicians help me out and spend an hour making it work but was not able to. So now I can only connect by PDN Operation ONLY. By using the BACK & WIRES-X application. Lastly, can I use the EDC-6 DC Cable to power the FT-3DR with the Battery Pack on the radio and not use up my battery pack FBA-39 or my SBR-14LI ? Much appreciated your directions on this issue. Stay Safe Ruben KD6CWI

GREAT tutorial! It all makes sense to me now :) I love my Yaesu radios. Just bought the FT5D (I also have a couple FT-70D as you showed) and only had a minor hiccup with the SD card. I have seen people returning their radios but the problem seems to be that some SD cards are not all the same fit. I could not engage a 32 gig Sandisk card but I had a Samsung card that immediately engaged and clicked in. I wonder if you are hearing the same thing....
Next stop... an FT-991A (when the wife isn't looking)
    Thanks Again!

After quite a bit of work, have direct mode working with FTM-300D downstairs and FT3D upstairs and loving it. Now want to set up using my 70D as portable connecting to one or the other. Question - Have my 300D connected to dummy load. Is that sufficient or do I need some kind of antenna to receive signal from 70D? Steve E

Think I will need to watch this a few times to get what's happening John, you are jumping around too quickly. New to this, just got my ftm100 connected in PDN mode, connected to link no audio, so what do you do now? Do I type Hello? Exit the room, no idea. There are so many experts that race through how easy it is to do... but not when you're at a lesser level starting out. At least I have an idea where to work up to. Thanks

In trying to reactivate WiresX, I get a greyed out screen. I can't get beyond it because it doesn't read the radio ID as it did the first time. It's greyed out, so I can't even enter my node or room ID # 71853 K9RJT Great video, BTW!

My port check drop down in Wires X is grayed out--unable to click on it. Basic Wires X functions seem to work--I can connect and listen to rooms, transmitter check works when not connected to a room (have not tested by talking in a room-I am still working on audio settings). Any thoughts?

    • @johnandanneschwab3929

I believe I found my answer: The Port Check function does not work with the 5D connected directly. Port Check works only with the HRI-200 connected.

For WiRES-X operation it mist be a cable and not Bluetooth. The Bluetooth is for audio only not control.
