Thanks David. I've been trying to understand Wires-X and programming my 991 for using it. In doing a search on RUclips your video came up, and while watching and learning I realized you're in Boise where I live. Now that blew me away! I appreciate you sharing this information. For some reason I've been running into a brick wall trying to understand the digital side of my radios, but your video got me into your repeater and I was able to follow along to help my understanding. You rock! Thanks again! It's awesome when the "light finally comes on."
Thank you for your comment! I really enjoy WiresX and love learning more about it everyday! Its my joy to share my knowledge and create videos that help folks! Glad this one hit home for you! 73
Thanks for the video. Thinking about buying a 991a as my first base station. Currently operating mobile on an FTM-300DR in my truck. I recognized your voice and then callsign in the video from the airwaves here in Boise! ~N1SLA
The 991A is a great radio for sure! If you are looking for 1 radio to do it all - it is the one for sure! Thanks for watching and nice to know my videos are being viewed by fellow Idahoans! 73
Can't wait to get my 991a. Trying to decide between it and the Icom 7300. Decided on the 991a and am trying to learn about it before I actually order the radio. Thanks for posting. You make Wires-X look easy. 73 W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
Thank you for your kind words! I will be doing more indeed as my health is getting back to normal after about a year of issues. With winter closing in for 2024 I will have more indoor time to start making videos again. Thanks for the sub and I hope to keep you as one! 73
One tip I discovered from a forum when using the wiresx button with a pi-star. If your squelch is open the rig wont transmit when you press the button and it doesn’t connect.
What areas are you looking to get more information on the 991A? It can be used for so many things I wouldn't know where to start without a topic for sure, but willing to put one together just let me know
Hi David, I am trying to understand this Wires-X stuff and your video was very helpful. However, I have two questions. First, what is the R in the upper left corner? Second, when I hit "ALL" I get a list of rooms but I cannot connect to any of them. It always says "No Data" and/or "Busy Error".
I don't think its your radio settings - remember if you want to change the room on the repeater, that is the only reason to try to handshake with it. Otherwise, just transmit in DN mode instead of FM. Another thing to remember is when in DN mode the repeater won't have a sql tail like FM ones do.
Thank you for your kind words! RUclips content is new to me, and I love sharing knowledge so I thought I would start a channel and share! Let me know if you have other questions and I will try to answer.
Thanks for this helpful video. I'm a newbi with Wires-x system. When you connect on a repeater like you did in the video, is the repeater still available for others users ? How this is working ? Best ,
Great question and I am glad you enjoyed the video! The repeater is available to other users, they will just be listening to the same wiresX room it is on or what ever ROOM a person changes it to. Kinda like watching TV in a living room; someone comes into the room and is watching the same show everyone else is and if that person changes the channel, then everyone in the room is watching the new show. 73
so in c4FM the radio use the 144mhz repeater settings of the radio's menu? are there other ways to connect to other repeters input? i have a problem with c4fm of 991A. it do not connect because it call the wrong entry frequency, like a wrong split. it's a little hard to explain.. i think i have to reset the radio :/(
Basically you set the radio to communicate with the repeater just as if you were using it for FM analog and then change the mode to DN for digital. Keep in mind, handshaking with the repeater with the WiresX button is only necessary if you want to change the ROOM on the repeater. Also, if you are to far away from the repeater it might not handshake but that doesn't mean you cannot use it for DN communication - just won't be able to change the ROOM and search like in my video. Yaesu repeaters are pretty picky when it comes to doing the Digital handshake and if you are to far away it fails. However, Key Up and say hello and you will probably get a response from someone in the ROOM. 73
Good question! Favorites from a WiresX repeater and ones on Hotspots work differently. ROOM numbers on repeaters running WiresX software are not the same as YSFReflectors on hotspots. Different backend systems. Sometimes you can find a repeater and reflector that have the same number - I got lucky as the N7MKY Room and YSF are the same number 83624!
Might be to far away from the repeater to communicate the digital handshake but should be able to still use it in DN mode and talk to folks in the ROOM that the repeater is sitting on.
@@n7mky Thanks for getting back I will check repeaterbook for dg id number if not there maybe the repeater has a webpage with it. Also thanks for video.
No internet on the 991A - this is all RF connections with the radio. The repeaters that have WiresX are the ones connected to the internet either directly or through a donor radio running WiresX software.
Didn't want to make the video any longer this go around - next one / updated one coming soon and I will take that into consideration. Thank you for your input

Trying to decide on Icom 7300 or 991a too.
Thank you, so many things to explore on my new FT-991a. This will me one.
...thank you very much for this video! My 991A is ordered and will be "mine" next week. 73 Mike
you are welcome! I enjoy doing them for sure. Did you get your 991 yet? Loving it?
@@n7mky ....tomorrow the package will arrive my home......👍👍👍👍👍
Great informational video on wiresX and the FT 991A, Thank you. KD4FJ
Thanks for watching! Sorry for the late reply! 73
Nice, clean video tutorial. I think you should do more for the 991a and the 891. I did sub in hopes of you doing more videos

David, can you only connect to rooms. I was trying to connect to a node that doesn't have a room. How do you do that.
David, very nice instructions, do you have other videos showing how to work this radio?

I can’t even hit the two or three WiresX repeaters near me. The closest is about 20 miles. In your opinion is it my radio settings or beyond range?

what cable did you use to make the wires x connection to your computer
The 991A isn't connected to a computer - Just a dummy load on the back and connecting to my WiresX repeater here at the QTH.
How do you actually use the favorites? I find how to delete them please help, but I’m doing it for my hotspot.

hi. why can't i log in to the wiresX repeater? it do not make the successful sound. any ideas?
Did you ever find out why? Around here most Yaesu reoeaters either didn't have Wires X or it was turned off today.
Might be to far away from the repeater to communicate the digital handshake but should be able to still use it in DN mode and talk to folks in the ROOM that the repeater is sitting on.
Are there any settings I need to change? Same radio into 4 Fusion repeaters and I cannot connect to anything.
I’d check to make sure you are in c4fm mode and then check to see if the repeater requires a dg Id number - Yaesu’s “tone” per se
@@n7mky Thanks for getting back I will check repeaterbook for dg id number if not there maybe the repeater has a webpage with it. Also thanks for video.
Can we start with how you connect it to the internet? Is it Wifi? Cause I don't see an RJ45 connection in the back.
No internet on the 991A - this is all RF connections with the radio. The repeaters that have WiresX are the ones connected to the internet either directly or through a donor radio running WiresX software.
@ thanks for clarifying!
No problem! My apologies for taking 9 months to reply! 73
Very good
Thank you! Still learning and having fun doing videos! Love the feedback, especially from seasoned RUclipsrs! :)
Thanks PA3CRL
So I guess you can’t talk on it then? You need to show us how it operates and not just bounce from nodes to nodes.
Didn't want to make the video any longer this go around - next one / updated one coming soon and I will take that into consideration. Thank you for your input
This is hopeless. The worst radio ever purchased.
Sorry to hear you don't like the radio. Are you unable to connect to WiresX? Need further help?
Thanks for the video! 73 de WA3RSL
