I totally agree Chuck. Now IS a good time to buy a radio.I have one on the way and the SDR front end was the selling point for me. Thanks for making this video.

I could still kick myself for selling my FT-897d , also I found out that I can't go without my FT-817/818 ( owned one since they were released. ) I'd sell one and would instantly regret it. My wife gifted me my FT-818 a few years ago because she missed sitting at our picnic table listening to the bands on a warm summer evening. I sold my 897d for my icom ic-7000 all because I was mostly a digital operator, and I got frustrated by AGC "pumping" whilst running PSK and CW and the ic-7000 has IF DSP rather than ADSP , but the ic-7k doesn't like any voltage drop maybe +/-5% where the ft-897d can handle much more variations. The ic-7k is fine mobile but a pack radio-it isn't, unless it's running a voltage conditioner, but it's still a power-hungry rig. The 817/8 will happily run 8 volts up to 15 volts .
Yea I meant to do that and just forgot and it focused on my mic half the time. I had it locked on the radio at one time but must have touched the screen again. Thanks for watching!

So, where are any backlit buttons (that even the 991a and every 30$ china handheld have)? I still don’t understand, why yaesu (and others…) doesn’t offers this feature even not in the (high price segments) DX-101? Have a lot of fun with the new radio! 73, Stefan
Stefan, that would be good and I know they added it later in older radios. Maybe to save on battery power while portable not that small led's would draw much.
Congrats Chuck on the new rig, nothing like New Radio Day..seems like I see a lot of FTDX10's on QRZ makes me wonder about them...curious how this one settles in for you..I had a TS590S for a decade, now I'm a year in on a 7300 which still feels new and modern.. ;)
Thanks for the video Chuck. Yaesu knows about the lack of 2m and 70cm in their newer radios. Because we bring it up to them frequently. The 710 is a great rig. I have the FTDX-10 as my shack radio. It is the best I have ever owned. The price of the 710 is best value as an entry HF right in my opinion. I paid $899 for my FT-857d a few years ago. This radio is far superior to that one.
Nice job, Chuck. I was planning to take out my club's 710 again next month. I believe there's a firmware update I need to do on it and I haven't played with it since the spring, so I'm looking forward to it.
I really like the FT710. I think it probably the best entry level radio especially at the price. It's the cheapest radio in the class and newer than most radios in the class like the 7300 also a good radio. I will miss the 991A for the 2m SSB but I have a ft857 which still gives me the 50 watts on that band.
I love my 710( my first 100 watt radio) but I'm have several QRP radios( 705 and an ELAD) plus a G-90. This radio is very intuitive and I've done everything I wanted to do and I have yet to open the manual. I'm still hoping for an upgrade to the 991A. I live in a small apartment so I don't have the luxury of having a big shack. Thank you for this video and please post more content about this. Thanks again and 73
Y ou need to lock the focus on your camera when doing the radio shots. Every time your hand reaches for the radio it goes out of focus. Just a suggestion.
Very nice Brother. 👩🚒 🚒 I really loved my 991A but I sold it and got a great deal on a new FTDX10. I like my DX10, but miss my 991A and wish I wouldn't have sold it. If I ever find a great deal on the 991A, I'll probably buy it again. Thanks again for the informative video. Enjoy your new Yaesu brother boot! Thank you for your service. Once a FF, Always a FF. 😊 73
Hi, When I was looking for a new tranciever I looked at the 991A. Because I didn't need UHF/VHF I went for the Yaesu FTDX10 when it had only been on the market about three months. After the radio development a fault and was repaired at Yaesu UK and over a year to get it set up how I wanted it, I'm very happy with it. Your FT710 seems comparable in performance to the FTDX10. Great video. Enjoy your new set. David M0DUU
Yea I tried that on the 705 and never could get it to do that. I suspect the 710 won't either or I haven't figured it out, well I know how to but not like your talking about, thanks for watching!
So tempted to sell my 991a and ge this one. I have a I like the shack in the box though but now that I have an 891 for my pota I don't take it out. And I have a 2730A I could bring in the house. I don't really use radio in the car.
The only reason I picked the 710 over a shack in the box is because if the 710 goes down, I still have 2m 70cm on another radio on the bench. Shack in a box, you send your radio in for service, you lose all your base radios.
You will find that if you place the external speaker on the right-hand side you will get better stereo sound, lets face it you don't put your stereo speakers to one side. Also to make it easier to use along with a mouse with scroll wheel use an external monitor (DVI-D or HDMI) , I have used both on my FT710. Congratulations on purchasing your FT710 Cheers VK3KGW.
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures I own a DX10 but I read that when you put the speaker on the left it covers the SD card slot. You'll need access to that slot to remove the SD card so you can plug it into an SD card reader on your computer to copy new firmware to the card so you can update the radio's firmware.
Only downside to this radio is the buttons are not back-lit. With the bright screen and led arcs around the tuning know it is difficult for me to read the button labels.
Sadly, your cam focused on the closer microphone or hand, and not the rig...but it loox quite good. On the fence between this and a 7300. My major ?? is what voltage will this rig work DOWN to - matters for battery ops. Neither my 7000 or 706 MkIIG do well below 12.0V, so I still use my trusty 817ND for field work... Also your opinion between this and the 7300. Tnx, Jerry wa2omu
I’ve used FTdx10 and 7300/705. Imho Icom user interface is easier but Yaesu is better receiver for isolating weak signals. Some prefer ease of use over performance in difficult signal environments. Often the harder the decision the less it matters.
This was a very interesting video. Thank you for the upload. A bit of background: I currently have the FT-857D and the FT-897D (inspired acquisition influenced by @TheTechPrepper). I want to permanently mount the 857D in my truck, and use the 897D in my bedroom. For the shack, I want to get the FT-DX10 for the base radio, and the FT-991A for POTA and all digital operations. The FT-710 looks like a great rig for portable ops, and the price is right. That said, I am more inclined to secure the previously mentioned 991A and DX10 for their specific functionalities. Buuuuuuut, if you create more videos featuring the capabilities of the 710, I might rethink the allocation of my precious few ham radio bucks. 😉
Lol they are all good radios I have a 857d that's why i let the 991A go because I will throw it in a backpack for some SOTA activations for 100 watts. Thanks for the info!
The FTDX10 gets you a superhet front-end with three different roofing filters (and an optional 300Hz CW filter for four) which then feeds an SDR, and a bigger 5 inch screen. It also gets you kind of sucky ergonomics with buttons and knobs all clustered too close to the VFO and its outer multi-function ring (which you would have to get used to. This definitely isn't a radio for people with ADHD.) The 710 gets you a pure SDR radio with a 4.3 inch screen, same size as the IC-7300, a somewhat smaller form factor, better ergonomics, and the Aess speaker thing where I guess both the internal and external speakers work at the same time with level adjustments for both which people say improves RX audio. I have the DX10 and apart from the ergonomics which still slightly annoy me I really like it. It can pull signals out of a pretty high noise floor and its internal tuner can tune up to around 3.5:1 or higher SWR: not as good as a G90's 5:1 tuner but still better than most radios. Even with its minor annoyances I don't regret my purchase at all. Yet per Rob Sherwood the 710s are ranked right below the DX10s in his lab test results and I'm sure you couldn't even hear the differences between the two radios apart from the Aess thing, assuming the DSP noise reduction algorithms in the 710 are as good as the ones in the DX10s.
Great vid Chuck, I do have a question, why haven’t you got a 101 ? Please do not say you are waiting to save enough to get a Flex 🤣, but I would like to know your reasoning ?
Please consider manual focus, if your camera has it. As nice as it is to have tack-sharp focus of the freckles on the back of your hand, it’s certainly not what you’re trying to show. Also, I just bought a used 891a from giga… I wonder if I’m getting your old one.
I have read the specs of those two radios, looked at the Sherwood assessment, and plenty of side to side videos of the 991A vs. 710 and I can’t get it how the 710 is much better overall receiver. Triple conversion superhet with roofing filters vs. SDR tech mainly refined for the HAM bands. IMHO, I think the 991a is keeper that will become more expensive overtime, particularly after its discontinuation. The FT710 will become a cheaper option as SDR technology advances. Just my two cents.
I started ham radio with the 991A. After about a year, I ended up getting an icom ic 7300. Why? I just found it easier to use. I have also gone through a series of QRP and HTs as well, going through various models. I have finally, after several years, simply settled on everything icom. For me, just makes sense. Get used to the menus and the layout, then the learning curve isnt steep. Loved the 991A though, a solid performer!
Nice overview Chuck. I'll be watching for more updates on how its working out for you. Seriously considering buying one. I am so frustrated at the RX on my 7300. Its a good radio. I like it and get a lot of compliments on the audio. But its seriously lacking in the RX department which is common on this radio. RX on my ft-891 blows it out of the water.
Congrats! Been loving mine! Personally I'd have saved the 100bucks for some good headphones the AESS isn't worth lugging the speaker round for POTA work, I don't even plug it in on my desk half the time. Maybe if it had the power supply build in it like a certain more expensive rig from the same company it would earn its desk space more frequently. Maybe I just need to open it up and go all mad science ham inside it......
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures I sure hope so. Just all my licenses this year and this is my first base station radio. So I wanted a shak in a box to get going. Almost went with a 710 or the 10, but this may eventually end up in a pota or go box. Thanks!!
I guess, price difference between FT 991 and FT-710 being $400 , I probably go with FT-710 also. if I were in market of buying HF radio now. FT-710 is the radio I recommend to new Ham , as first time HF radio. AG6JU
Thanks for the info Chuck. I think I'll start with the HL2 first for HF radio, mainly digital at QTH for now, but I still want physical buttons and QRO later. The 710 has some stuff that I'm keen on and is current tech compared to the vintage 7300. Lol Good point with the 705 needing a HF, VHF and UHF amps and ofcourse, a tuner, i which, I think is its biggest fail.👍
I have this radio also and love it, it is my first HF rig. I did consider buying the 991A but went with the 710. I would like to buy the 991A for 2m and 70cm as a base radio. I don't like these small radios, the display is to small, that is why I bought the 710 because of the availability to use a monitor. These small screens are hard to see with my vision not the best. I hope Yaesu will make a larger 991A display and the monitor capability .There is not enough radios on the market with 2m and 70cm functions, I only see Yaesu 991A and Icom 9700. Right now we have to use a mobile radio for 2m and 70 cm as a base station. The Yaesu 710 is a great radio , it has been a lot of fun to use. Your camera was going out of focus.
I just ordered a 991a and plan to sell my old Kenwood TS-2000a. My thinking is both radios have similar bands. But the waterfall and convenience of digital modes are easier on the 991a . I was considering the 701 before I bought the 991a. 73 Steve AA4SH
That radio is wayyy too small. It looks like a mobile CB. Not enough buttons on the front means you have to go to the menu to adjust. Put your readers on to see the screen.
The design of that external speaker always frustrates me. If I had a FT-991A I would have 3D printed something that allowed all of that wasted room for...something. You could at least store the power cable and a few other things in there if you are going to carry it around.
On the FT991A the volume is quite low. If you're using an external speaker, you have to put the volume control about 1 or 2 o'clock to get decent volume out of the external speaker. If you go too far it destroyed immedigilly. That's what I don't like about the 991
Imho the only thing that makes the 991a better is having 2m/70cm. Everything else the 710 and FTDX10 are hundreds of times better. I have the FTDX10 and it will likely be my forever base station.
Your auto focus played havoc with the video. Alot of it blurred. Suggest for future efforts remove the mike in the foreground and avoid having your hand in the frame as much as possible.
A well definitely not sale Mty Yaesu FT-991 I really love that radio. But will buy the Yaesu FT‐710 at a later date when the price comes down a lot more. It looks to be quite the radio. I definitely want one of them. 73 AE4OY WILLIAM PEACOCK EM-81UF Blackshear ,Georgia

It is the best I have ever owned. The price of the 710 is best value as an entry HF right in my opinion. I paid $899 for my FT-857d a few years ago. This radio is far superior to that one.
You are totally right , I give John a earful every time we talk. Thanks for watching!
My only nit of these radios is the panadapter does not do averaging. I wish Yaesu would address this feature request in firmware.
You never know they may, I have heard that before and will pass along tp John Kruk.
Nice job, Chuck. I was planning to take out my club's 710 again next month. I believe there's a firmware update I need to do on it and I haven't played with it since the spring, so I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks Mike, I think I checked and it's up to date for now.
awesome video. Thank you
As of this comment, video has been up 1 month - curious how you are liking it over the 991a?
Thanks again and 73
I plan to Walter, yes the 991A is due an upgrade.
I've got a brand new 991a in the box. I'm thinking it's time to cut it loose, too. Love my icom so much I never opened the yeasu.
That was my deal I have enough radios and had to let one go, thanks for watching!
That sounded good! What size of doublet you have up?
My doublet is 110' and is at 30' and 40'
Planning a new antenna set up. Really looking at a doublet or full wave loop

ou need to lock the focus on your camera when doing the radio shots.
Thanks, yea I will regret selling I'm sure but really like the 710 also. I miss FF guys not the city lol.
Hi,
When I was looking for a new tranciever I looked at the 991A.
David M0DUU
Thanks David, the 710 lacks the super-het front end and some filters but for what I will use it for it's perfect. Thanks for the comment!
I wish Yaesu would allow the radio to TX the recorded audio like you recorded.
Yea I tried that on the 705 and never could get it to do that. I suspect the 710 won't either or I haven't figured it out, well I know how to but not like your talking about, thanks for watching!
What a coincidence, i bought mine at Pacificon too. Steep learning curve, but it seems to perform very well. Iblove the receiver.
Dang we could have talked, while not huge Pacificon is a decent show, thanks for the comment.
So tempted to sell my 991a and ge this one. I have a I like the shack in the box though but now that I have an 891 for my pota I don't take it out. And I have a 2730A I could bring in the house. I don't really use radio in the car.
The thing the FT991A gives you is SSB on 2m and 70cm keep it if you can or like SSB on those bands, I have a couple other radios that will.
The only reason I picked the 710 over a shack in the box is because if the 710 goes down, I still have 2m 70cm on another radio on the bench. Shack in a box, you send your radio in for service, you lose all your base radios.
Yes, but I like to do ssb on 2m and that's hard to find except in a shack in the box. Well Icom has the 9700 but it's pricey for only a couple bands
Tks
You will find that if you place the external speaker on the right-hand side you will get better stereo sound, lets face it you don't put your stereo speakers to one side. Also to make it easier to use along with a mouse with scroll wheel use an external monitor (DVI-D or HDMI) , I have used both on my FT710.
Congratulations on purchasing your FT710
Cheers VK3KGW.
Thanks Keith, I just set it up per the picture but I will try the speaker on the other side and will hook up a monitor soon.
@@jaym1301 it does and I will change it in the near future.
@@figspigsandfeathers8179 That's true on the ft450 they changed that in later models.
@@petersichel9934 Thanks.
Do u like it better than the 991A? I am currently looking at the 991-A I Currently have a Yaesu 767 that I got new back in the 90s
Might wanna turn of autofocus if your trx and camera not moving.
Tnx for review. 👍
Thanks for the video. And thanks for the FT-60 video....my go to when I need to reprogram (infrequently enough that I forget the steps). 😁❤😎👍
Lol Andy I did that video to remind me also and still get comments about it, thankyou!
Is the front end protected from static charge/lightning ?
If not then the returns will be pretty fun. 😂
Not sure any radio is protected from lightning, I always disconnect.
Do you know of any third party antenna adapters that will provide for a second receive antenna using the 710.?
Antenna switch?
There are alot of antenna switches out there try to choose a quality one. Also my manual antenna tuner has switches so that's another way to go.
This definitely isn't a radio for people with ADHD.)
The 710 gets you a pure SDR radio with a 4.3 inch screen, same size as the IC-7300, a somewhat smaller form factor, better ergonomics, and the Aess speaker thing where I guess both the internal and external speakers work at the same time with level adjustments for both which people say improves RX audio.
Massive gap in the market now.. What we need is a 710 with 2 meters and 70cms... Its about time. Will Icom make one this year?
I already have the DX 10 and just purchased the FTM 500 for WiresX. Looks like the 710 is a nice size to take POTA.
It is the same size as the 991A, thanks for the comment!
😮 I thought I would never see the day.
Great vid Chuck, I do have a question, why haven’t you got a 101 ?
Please do not say you are waiting to save enough to get a Flex 🤣, but I would like to know your reasoning ?
Lol well the price really on the 101and my shack radio is going to be the Hermes, thanks for the comment!
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures that VC Tune though Chuck, the VC Tune. 🤤 lol
Looks like you're likin' it! That's what counts 73 de Bill
That's very true Bill!
Please consider manual focus, if your camera has it. As nice as it is to have tack-sharp focus of the freckles on the back of your hand, it’s certainly not what you’re trying to show.
Also, I just bought a used 891a from giga… I wonder if I’m getting your old one.
I get it will try the manual next time
I have read the specs of those two radios, looked at the Sherwood assessment, and plenty of side to side videos of the 991A vs.
Luis I value your two cents, thankyou for your input 73!
If your ft891 is better I bet you will love the ft710, I think the sale is into December for now. Thanks for the comment!
Looking for mine soon. First HF.
For the money I don't think there is a better choice right now!
I love my FT-710, and I also kept my FT-991-A. Just because of having a waterfall on 2m/70cm
Haha, I have just sold mine too, in favour of FTDX-10! :-) However, after securing my VHF/UHF operation by IC-9700... ;-)
That's the deal Icom is the only company that makes that type radio, thanks for the comment!
They’re nice set up
Thanks I like it!
Re HDMI. My understanding is HDMI is a royalty item while DVI is not. An HDMI connector would add to the cost.
I have heard that, not a problem the monitor I have is DVI so win!
I put everything in a pelican style box and yes headphones will go also, thanks for watching!
I only bought mine for easy remote base capability. RemoteTX and 991A makes it to easy ……enjoy your your new toy!
I haven tried doing a remote radio, might be a good video?
That 710 is at a great price right now, having two isn’t a thing..is it?
You could make it a thing right?
Nice review. I thought I was the only guy with zero interest in contesting
Just bought one!!
Awesome, you will love it have fun!
Lol
Good point with the 705 needing a HF, VHF and UHF amps and ofcourse, a tuner, i which, I think is its biggest fail.👍
Thanks don, it's hard to wrong with those two radios you will like them both. Thanks for the comment!
Sorry for your loss…
Yaesu need to release an updated version of the 991A with larger screen etc.
I just ordered a 991a and plan to sell my old Kenwood TS-2000a. My thinking is both radios have similar bands. But the waterfall and convenience of digital modes are easier on the 991a . I was considering the 701 before I bought the 991a.

Move the FT-710 speaker to the right side for speaker separation using AESS for better sound according to other RUclips videos.
The 3DSS mode is definitely not for contesters. IMO it is cosmetic functionality at most
I have an FTDX10 for the shack, but I also wanted 2m/70cm for portable, so when an IC-7000 came across my path, I snagged it.
To each his own.
Lee that 7000 is really nice but I never saw a good price on one and I do have my Ft 857D also.
Great video Chuck. I am currently looking at the 991a for a home base , currently have the ft817

My home base is a 991a. I run it off a 20 ah agm battery. The battery is hooked to a 5 a charger that runs during the night using a timer.

I did on the next video and it did work good!
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures nice work man ! :)

That radio is wayyy too small. It looks like a mobile CB. Not enough buttons on the front means you have to go to the menu to adjust. Put your readers on to see the screen.
They make a bigger radio!
I like my fT-991A.
I got a 991 and just picked up a 897 for mobile.
That obligatory Tech Prepper sip of coffee.
Right?, have to see if he's watching!
The design of that external speaker always frustrates me. If I had a FT-991A I would have 3D printed something that allowed all of that wasted room for...something. You could at least store the power cable and a few other things in there if you are going to carry it around.
You might be on to something there with the storage, thanks for watching!
They’re all like my “electronic children”, can’t let any go… yet.
I get you Dave, thanks for watching!

Evening Cornbread!
@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures winding down watching a little MNF🏈 thanks for your videos 👋
Yea it's great for people that want 2m and 70cm SSB, and I bet you get another radio someday lol.
looks nice, but I don't like those wacky RJ45 microphone connectors...
