I have been bowhunting since 1985. I will be 70 next month. This is my first year to saddle hunt. Your videos have been extremely helpful. I will watch this one numerous times. I have already seen numerous advantages to the saddle. It my age, I am tired of lugging a climber around. Keep up the good work and thank you!!
Your teaching style, my friend, embraces the Chinese proverb: "Tell me and I will forget, . . . , involve me and I will learn." At 71 years of age entering my first season of SH, I have saturated my brain with a wide spectrum of videos. The timing of finding this video makes it the most valuable lesson that I was missing. I’ve learned from my limited practice that regardless of what I’ve learned about ascending/descending, ropes & knots, etc., it all becomes secondary to enjoying SH if you are not comfortable in your saddle. This demonstration is truly the missing piece for me. When they create " Saddle-Hunting Teacher of the Season," you have my vote. 🤗 I, as with the rest of your followers here, am seriously grateful for all of your videos.
I whole heartedly agree with you here. However, I think your quote was from Benjamin Franklin, "“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Maybe he stole it from the Chinese LOL.
I am all about angles. It has taken me 2 years to learn what you have just taught in 20 mins. People go hunting with the intention of sitting for extended periods but get tired or restless, with this set up you really can stay comfortable for a long sit. Thanks for taking the time to educate.
Did my first saddle hunt last weekend I’m walking out of the woods my hips were really sore. Just figured it was old age at 60. Thank you for this video I think it will help me avoid that on my next hunt.
It makes me so happy when I type something into youtube and Average Jack has a video on that topic. You and Jason from the Traditional Bowhunting and Wilderness Podcast are by far my favorite two youtube hunting channels. Keep up the good work man.
Thank you for explaining everything the way you did. I was ready to give up on my mantis, after watching your video, I made a couple adjustments & am completely comfortable now. Thanks again.
I can confirm that the Mission platform has an angle adjustment and agree that a slight to moderate downward angle is ideal (imo). Also, the Cruzr saddles can also adjust along the bridge loops so the pressure moves to different points along your hips, back and legs. It is actually more adjustable than the Phantom because it uses AmSteel and prussic knots. Great information!
Awesome Video. I’m new to saddle hunting and have been struggling with comfort. Your tips should Help A LOT! I’ll try them out in the morning! Love your channel!
Excellent video, your presentation was fantastic. You can tell that you’re a teacher because you were clear and concise probably one of the best videos on the saddle that I’ve seen yet. Keep the great content coming
Coming from a engineers point of view, the higher the girth the less pull toward the tree you'll have, decreasing the stress on your legs or knees. You'll can always readjust your bridge so you won't have the upper pull.
Good info. I tried saddle hunting last year for a bit. Was pretty uncomfortable. Good tips. May give it a go again next year. Didn't know so many adjustments could change so many things. Good info.
I just started the saddle this spring. I shoot well from it. I feel I’m too close to the tree bumping my bow. Thanks for this tip-I still have many questions. I will scroll through your other vids. I have a late archery tag. I got a blacktail last year. I knew the saddle is the ticket for a big one;)
I'm loving my 2 panel Latitude Method saddle. It clips together for walking in so it's out of the way, then when I climb up I can place the lower panel under my butt and the upper panel across my low back. Super nice to have that adjustability.
That was very helpful! I'm purchasing a saddle for this up coming season, and my biggest concern is hip pinch and comfort. Thanks so much for the information! Good luck this season.
My saddle order was filled and finally coming...hope to apply these tips and tricks practicing to find out what works best for me. Thanks for making this vlog...!
Thanks for all the tips and also the link for the video from the budget sportsman. I'm going to try the angle with my predator on my next sit. Thanks much!
Outstanding video. Thank you. I have spent several hours in my saddle and you have summarized extremely well what I have experienced. You are a great teacher!
Thanks for such a detailed and informative video to breakdown all of the little adjustments that can be made and how they affect the comfort. I believe most of the people who try saddle hunting then quit do so because they haven’t taken the time in the stand to try these little suttle changes. It’s amazing how much a 2” adjustment here or there makes.
Thanks Jack. I found shooting from a saddle that with the wrong tether angle that it makes it very difficult @ the beginning of the draw cycle. U r right about the lean & the tether angle. I like my tether a little lower & I really like to lean back. I have always shot better & with my bow from a tree where u r bending from the waist. I'm thin & shooting on the ground with a high center of gravity makes me less steady. I'm not talking holding steady but from step 1 to step 5 of my progression. I've always used a tether attached to a waist belt cuz body harnesses give me pain. The belt goes halfway between my fanny pack & my armpits. However with the saddle it is much easier to sit relaxed for a longer time. Not to mention not having to lug around all that metal. Is your 2nd bridge & tether an Oplux tactical 1. I went that way & I wouldn't use anything else. There r specially made prusiks for the Oplux & I recommend those as well.
Another awesome video! You are indeed great at explaining each subject, and I truly appreciate your advice. You have helped me numerous times, so thank you again for helping me become a more effective hunter 👍
Great video, I was having a problem with my binos interfering with my bridge.... now I realize I have had the tree tether too high and the saddle to high on my but.
Thank you!!! One important safety question: How do you back up your Ropeman 1 on the tether? I strive to be part of the "1 is none; 2 is one" club. Thanks
Nate, that was probably the best explanation video, covering in-depth and educational (the teacher in you dropping the acute/obtuse terms) saddle positioning. You definitely gave me some things to think about and try. I too, change positions every once in awhile. Although I am a leaner mostly, I do like positioning my feet on the platform sideways to the tree and wedge my ankle/shin as my body swings to the side of the tree. BTW, are you still doing the podcast?

Thanks for the great comfort tips. I currently don't have a tree saddle or even a climbing tree stand, but I really want one for certain situations to get above the head height brush that the bruiser bucks I saw love to get into and bed, etc... I have been hunting from the ground for a while, but really got out more than I ever did and saw many deer including missing 3 does between 20-35 yards (first animals that I have ever drawn and released an arrow on), a really nice tall 8-10 point that came within 10 yards of me while on the ground, but I didn't draw since he never looked down or away. Plus other opportunities that I didn't draw on. But I believe that a tree saddle would provide better opportunities in certain situations and areas. I just don't have the $350-$550 sitting around for a really nice Tethrd system yet, especially with me getting married in August. Have you done a how to practice shooting all the shots out of a saddle video yet?
Great video! What’s that device you’re using on your tether? I like prussik’s but hate having to use two hands to adjust and notice you do one handed adjustments
There is no way I’d be comfortable being up 16’ on that little of a platform and no way I’d tie my lead to the tree that high because I like to sit from now and again. This dude is crazy I always want more room up in my tree stand.
It's been less than stellar, but there's still gun season and late archery after Christmas to make it happen! I usually float between 12-17ft platform height, depending on cover and how much I can stretch in between sticks. At 6'4", standing on a 15ft platform gets my vision well over 20ft, so I don't try and sky scrape it much anymore.
Hey man, amazing video! Definitely subbing to your channel. Was wondering if you have any tips for bow accuracy in the saddle. Just tuned my new bow and broadheads. The issue is I’m shooting very accurate and consistent groupings on the ground, but when I get in my saddle and practice it seems 50% of my shots are low and to the left. After watching this video, I think I may have to play around with the angle of my tether and/or length of my bridge, but was wondering if you have any ideas or tips for me before I start doing that tomorrow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and good luck this year man!
Also definitely want to check the 3rd axis of your sight. If you’re consistently missing one direction from an elevated position, it’s a good chance the 3rd axis is off. IF your sight has that capability.
@@averagejackarchery it does! Thank you so much for that suggestion, never even crossed my mind. I’ve never messed with a 3rd axis on a sight before. Not sure if you had a comment before this one because I noticed you started this comment with “also” and I don’t see a comment previous to the 3rd axis. @@averagejackarchery one thing I forgot to mention is when I was practicing out of my saddle, I wasn’t using sticks to get up the tree because I just wanted to get the feel of shooting in the saddle before shooting at elevation, so I was only like 2ft off the ground
Curious. I’m of a slim build and much prefer my tether to be as high as I can get it. Practically no hip pinch, far more ability to swing all the way around the tree and with the tethers angle being closer to parallel with the tree while sitting, it’s easier on the leg muscles as it mimics a sitting position in contrast to a “push off” position which requires much more muscle tension. Different strokes...
Thanks for the great video. Hunted for the first time this weekend with the saddle and probably the biggest issue I had was not "hip pinch" but 'thigh pinch." The saddle was super tight against the side of my thighs. I played around with everything but couldnt eliminate that. Any suggestions? Im 5'10, 205 with a 36" waist. I actually tried standing, sitting, and I did the side sit all in my 3.5hr sit Saturday.
Are you a righty or lefty? I find that switching your caribener to where the open gate is facing up. This does 2 things. I dont like when the gate of the caribener digs into the bark when i switch to sitting and it goes against the tree but more importantly your tag end for your tree tether is on the right side. So if you're a right handed shooter you can hold your bow in your left hand and have easier one hand adjustment with your right hand. Just a thought. Thanks for the video
I see now that your tag end is on your right side of the caribener. But if you would please explain the open gate facing the tree. I think you can adjust it to where it will be open gate facing up while still having tag end on the right. Im sure you just do what works for you im just curious because you seem to put a lot of reasoning into your ideas and setup
Depends on how I put my tether on the tree. I've ran it both ways without a hiccup. Being a screw lock carabiner you can have it either way without fear of opening. Depending on how a tree is leaning depends on which direction I girth hitch my tether.
Leg straps just need to be slightly snug. Definitely don't need to be pinching off the legs that's for sure. And I run the belt of the saddle while walking above more normal belt. Loosen and slide down and retighten below the belt once at height.
It's interesting that you're a teacher in real life. It shows! This is one of the best teaching channels on YT for hunting .
