My brother works for Horizon and was there last night. He said this guy was a perfectly nice guy, didn't seem suicidal, (not that he wasn't) but also that he had been seen very recently watching training videos of how to fly planes. He was an airline ramp agent who was "tow trained", which gives an employee basic knowledge of how to power on and taxi aircraft.

Mental illness can happen to anyone. It can be caused by all sorts of factors like viruses, genetics, certain kinds of brain tumors, chemical imbalances, allergies, hormonal disorders, medication side effects, etc. He knew he couldn't land the plane before he took off.

I'm from the other side of the pond (Ireland) and don't really see this style of TV journalism at home. Here, they are generally straight-up and report the facts i.e. no histrionics., They don't go for supposition or conjecture in the main. They would certainly quote those who do but you would be left under no illusion that is a particular viewpoint. When I watch US news I find it hard to discern what is fact i.e. what is the story? Versus and what is the agenda of the news organisation. To me Journalist (like politicians) should be boring and competent - just tell us as it is.

People are coming at him saying he could have ended up killing people, but to me it sounds like he didn't intend to harm anyone but himself. He was trying to stay away from populated areas and when he crashed it he crashed it on an island where there was nobody. Some people are like well, why did he have to kill himself that way? But I think he thought "well if I'm gonna go out I guess I'll go out with a bang. I've always wanted to fly a plane anyway" I think that was his mentality. He just wanted to live a little...
