  • In this video I show you HOW TO CHANGE LANES SMOOTHLY AND SAFELY. This video might be long but it covers almost all the points you need to know when changing lanes. Changing your position on the road involves changing lanes or overtaking and passing another vehicle. Before beginning, be sure you have enough space and time to complete the move safely.
Never change lanes without giving the proper signal and looking to make sure the move can be made safely.
Here are the steps for making a lane change:
Check your mirrors for a space in traffic where you can enter safely.
Check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder in the direction of the lane change. Be especially careful to check for bicycles and other small vehicles. Signal that you want to move left or right.
Check again to make sure the way is clear and that no one is coming too fast from behind or from two lanes over on a multi-lane road.
Steer gradually into the new lane. Do not slow down, maintain the same speed or gently increase it.
Never make sudden lane changes by cutting in front of another vehicle, including bicycles. Other drivers expect you to stay in the lane you are already in. Even if you signal, they expect you to yield the right-of-way.
Avoid unnecessary lane changes or weaving from lane to lane. You are more likely to cause a collision, especially in heavy traffic or bad weather. Don't change lanes in or near an intersection. Remember that spending a few seconds behind another vehicle is often safer than going around it.

This was by far the best explanation and demonstration needed in regards to changing lanes. I finally found the right info!! I struggle with how much to turn the steering wheel at a fast speed when changing lanes, how to gauge the distance of the car behind me and the time it takes to check the mirrors and my blind spot ! You hit it on the nail! Thank you!!

6:27 Really, I thought I was the only one. I guess it's a natural tendency to turn your head and wheel at the same time until you learn the coordination. I will never forget when I was taking driver's ed and the instructor would get so mad when I would do this. He got so mad one day, he said, if you do that again, I'm going to cuff you one. This is what I remember more than anything from driver's ed. I'm watching this video because 40 years later, I'm still not as confident as I need to be in changing lanes.

Dude!, plate Exercise oh my god I’m glad you did it too. It gives me hopes that this isn’t a waste of time. Since none of my family or friends know how to drive I have to exercise my brain to get used to the road. I imagine myself into feeling that I’m on the road with my imaginary pedals, mirrors, shoulder checking and hand over hand doing parallel parking as well as a lining while parallel parking, turning signal all day like 5 hours. I don’t keep my head straight I move my head scanning my surrounding.

  • @mostinho7
    @mostinho7 2 года назад +27

    Done thanks
Signal first before checking mirrors (because if you check mirror first you have to check again after)
    Must check
    1. Rear view mirror (if car behind you wants to also switch lanes, let them switch first)
    2. Side video mirror (if you see full car in side view mirror then you have enough room, also make sure car isn’t speeding up, if it is then let it pass you before you switch lanes)
    3. Blind spot check
Steer slightly when switching not suddenly
Don’t steer the wheel while checking blind spot
Give your self a distance of two car lengths before switching behind a car, the car you switch behind might stop you need enough distance to stop too

Wow, my instructor literally made me to the slow checks you said not to do. It made no sense to me, to make me stare at the mirrors for so long, or be turned around in the blind spot check, because that way I don’t have eyes on the road... So my natural instinct to be fast was squashed and now I have to relearn it...

Anindita Roy girl don’t worry, I failed too but I have another one coming up in November. Keep checking the icbc page, or call them. But most of all chin up, because failure is one step closer to being successful since now you know what your shortcomings are❤️

Thanks Haminder’s great video, it really help me a lot , it gives me a clear picture & have confidence on lane changing , great ! May I ask this rule also apply to the highway driving on changing lanes ? That mean when I see the whole car on my side mirror , the speed is 100 mk/h is it enough time for me to change lane, of course I must do the signal, check rear view mirror , side mirror & blind spot . Hope u can answer my question, thanks again 😍😍

The situation that I came across this morning was the following:
I entered the highway from the acceleration lane/ramp ( actually it's is the first lane from the right that stretches all the way till the exit,it doesn't end ) .After that, I found myself in the middle lane , having 2-3 cars in front of me (moving with 110 -115km/h) and one car following from behind.
The left lane was almost empty so it wouldn't have been an issue to change lanes to the left. However, returning back to the middle lane didn't seem easy and safe.
Changing lanes to the left and then and slowing down to return to the middle lane doesn't seem safe and the right thing to do.
On the other hand, should I want to speed up , I would have to go over 120km/h, get ahead of these cars ... and that doesn't even guarantee me that I won't miss the exit ( doesn't seem very safe either).
What would be the ideal thing to do in that scenario? Honestly it's the only thing that is bugging me about the test and I get mixed responses .
