I just got a job week ago in a grocery store. Finally after 6 months of looking for one and the boss was okay with the fact that I have Asperger’s. He said that my memory, speed and positive additude are great benefits to keep a great atmosphere.
Working at a store has always been my dream job since I was 16.
It’s so fun to put products at the shelves and speaking to customers and helping them is really rewarding.
Plus costumer service is actually good for my health since it helps with my social anxiety and makes my mood better.

I had enough counseling when I was young to know that it doesn't really do much for me. Self-searching does more, for me. The thing that really really REALLY helped me was going to a special school at age 11-15ish. I know that's not a helpful tip for adults, but for parents... if your kid is isolated, shunned, punished and ignored in school, they're not going to be able to develop social skills or skills to regulate their behavior. If they're put in smaller classes with other autistic kids who don't just dismiss them, and teachers who help them work through their behavioral problems instead of just suspending them, then they're going to be able to learn how to communicate with others and regulate their own behavior. It was amazing how I was able to change once I could see the consequences of my actions in an environment where I wasn't just treated like a rabid animal that's totally outside the spectrum of acceptable behavior.

i am a 38 y/o female and have slipped through the cracks and misdiagnosed my whole entire life (from age 8 to this past year).. regardless of the fact that my little brother had a diagnosis, and my mother was later diagnosed as an adult..
PLEASE people - do NOT let ANYONE misdiagnose your children! i am a suicide survivor bc i was placed on anti-depressants, which ultimately threw my brain out of sorts.. i've been forcefully locked away so many times (10 times from age 14 to age 28) in psych wards for disorders i didn't have.. growing up being told you're ""smart but lazy" and everyone around you comparing their anxiety to your autism is so damaging.. i am just now trying to sort this all out. thank you for the video..

I haven't officially received the word yet, but I'm pretty sure aspergers is what makes me, me. Constantly over analyzing, reading into things to deeply, being told to "calm down" or "sit still," loosing 6 hours in a project, and feeling out of touch with the rest of humanity. I want to communicate, I talk constantly while I feel like everything I say goes right over other people's heads, if they are actually paying attention at all. Every day is building Rome in a day, or just giving up and going back to bed. I don't know?

In November I was diagnosed with stage 3 oral cancer, got 50% my tongue removed reconstructed, had radiotherapy, been recovering from that healing my self with cannabis and stem cell therapy but recently I found a paper on living with a undiagnosed ASD partner and it read like my life but so much made sense. I found that Being Surrounded by other people your own age who don't have aspergers can be beneficial. I TrIed being more observant of their behavior in social settings, really helped me alot when I was younger, and I'm alot better now than I was but I still exhibit traits of aspergers in my mid 20's.

I'm a parent, I come here to better understand the challenges my adult son faces in his life. He has Autism Spectrum Disorder - (Aspergers, when diagnosed) and Non-verbal Learning Disability, (which affects his ability to process and understand non-verbal forms of communication such as tone of voice, facial expression, and body language.) The insights I learn from watching your channel have been beneficial in opening conversations where he has struggled to be able to explain as clearly as he would like.
He can be very sensitive about having this diagnosis. I have managed to get him to watch this video and he's seriously interested in the relaxation therapy! I hope he will consider occupational therapy as well, as he often struggles with spacial differences and spills are a daily frustration for him. He is very hard on himself and I am hoping that in time, he can turn that around and use that ability to scrutinize for something more beneficial.
It is my hope that he will continue to watch your channel and discuss his thoughts with me, so I can continue to support him in an informed and more directed way. I've learned so much from him and from you here.
Keep up the great work Dan!

Diagnosed in October 2019 just before my 32rd birthday 😕 only worked it out in February and I totally agree some councillors are great for talking through where your at and trying to unpick everything until it makes sense. I'm so grateful I was with a councillor I trusted prior and after I was diagnosed it helped alot to process part of what it meant to me, how life effects me personally and how I cope with it.
Thanks for your work Dan you've helped me along the way alot ☺️

My boyfriend of 12 years can be very invalidating because he zones in to the things he likes, doesn't understand why I want compliments, fidgets a lot, doesn't make eye contact, only has online friends, etcetera. On top of this, I'm Bipolar I so his lack of engagement has driven me nuts and turned into terrible arguments more times than I can count. He does not have a formal diagnosis but I let loose on my psychiatrist about this and she asked me the family member version of screening questions for Aspberger's Syndrome. He matched up almost perfectly even though I was in denial. I know he will not see a therapist on his own because he thinks he's totally fine. But now that this has become pretty much a reality for me (I have not told him), I'm looking all over for support. I don't talk down to my AS friends but I find myself doing it to him. I'm so worried that we'll fight again over me misunderstanding something or that he'll have a melt down (I have them too, just differently).
I feel on eggshells here. I'm talking to my own therapist Monday to see what I can do to process this in a healthy way for both of us. I've already told him that I support him and that many of his tics and habits are something I will just have to accept. He shrugged like always and I accepted that as an affirmative.
He's a sweet, fun guy. I did try to move on from him but couldn't. I don't want to. Knowing now what he's experiencing and learning more about it isn't going to change him but it absolutely will change how I handle myself in the situations that crop up.
Thank you so much for these videos. I'm so grateful to the mental health community already for the support I've received for my BPD and this is just another amazing resource.
Apologies for this becoming an essay. I'm currently hypomanic lol

Don't feel bad I'm pretty sure I have Asperger's and started looking into it recently.my gf of 12 years always was at the blunt end of things (I'm very honest) she asks does she look fat and I will agree .... She asked right? I don't get social cues,I don't understand how to make friends in real life or what the social norm is I have friends online I can speak to but face to face I clam up.
Best advice I could give is the sweeter you are to him the sweeter he will be back smile and try and be close to him so he doesn't have to try and read the social cues we just don't understand them!
I did tell my gf I think I have Asperger's and she said it explains alot but she's started being more affectionate towards me because I struggle with social cues and just think she's always pissed off at me or had a bad day.
Hope I helped a little bit and good luck

I worked as a teacher's assistant for our special education department for four years. Honestly, the children with autism of different levels were so wonderful to work with. I was assigned specifically to one child for a while because her anxiety was so bad that she needed one-on-one attention. I loved working with her and helping her to stay occupied and calm. I hope you were treated well. Fortunately for my students (but not for me), I was not treated well when I dealt with mental health issues as a child. I was able to learn from the mistakes the adults around me made and to pass that understanding on to my students.
I hope you are well and that you had at least some good experiences in school.

My Granddaughter is now 19 and suffers from anxiety and depression and is on meds for that. From school documents, they think she has some autism traits. Recently she lost her mother who was a very smart woman, who went to college. So a hard act to follow, she just started in hairdressing school, and already is falling behind. She is also dyslexic and so reading the textbooks is a real challenge for her, and although I was very open in the consultation process to let them know her issues they are not accommodating her as apparently they are duty bound to do. By the way, we are in Canada. She came home today crying, and saying she is failing some tests, already, and I am trying to let her make up her own mind about what she should do. Give up now, or try to keep going, She has a long day with travel 7am til 6pm then homework to do. I did get her a Counsellor but she didn't want to talk to him, and so I just don't know what to do now. I have Googled my area and no Autism help around. I don't know what to do to help her, she is very uptight, and can be loud and comes across as rude sometimes but the school does not accept that kind of attitude to their staff which I can see, but where do we go from here? I am a senior with no other family, and now I have inherited 2 Teenagers the other one had also depression anxiety and ADHD so I am overwhelmed and need help getting them through this. I have a Dr that says the school reports are old so he kind of dismissed what they had to say, so that was a letdown for moving forward as well. Anyway, just needed to get this off my mind today and will be following you to see if I can pick up some tips to help me along and cope. Can you make this that only you see it?

I am outside of Philly but close enough to travel there. I know what you mean. It took until I was 30 to be diagnosed with autism and adhd. I am in Delaware County if you are wondering. I wonder if you can go out of the county for therapy. I'm sure there's something like that for your insurance but I'm not entirely sure. I guess it depends.

@@hikariwaifu2313 Oh hey fellow Pennsylvanian. I was diasgnosed at 31, but it's not officially official. My psychiatrist did the evaluation because the 2 places in Philly had crazy waiting lists and is fees upwards of 2000$. I have medicaid and going out of county is always difficult. There is no guarantee I could get reimbursement or get an exception and have them cover it. I found a lace in Delaware that will do OT for sensory processing disorder in adults, but it was no go with my insurance. I can't complain too much though medicaid is very good about covering things and providers as long as it's in county.

Diagnosed year before, 2018, getting the official call that I had Autism Level 1 exactly a week after my birthday. So I'll always remember I was 36 for a week before I found out. I've also previously been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder Type 1 with Psychosis, which kept me from getting other diagnoses until that was under control. It masked a lot of other symptoms. Once quarantine is over, they're going to have me tested for ADHD as well. ^^; I've been seeing a therapist and psychiatrist for my bipolar diagnosis for a long time, and currently see my therapist once a week via video chat. While my previous therapist was mostly cognitive behavioral therapy, my new therapist focuses on dialectical behavioral therapy. Basically as I have issues with things and react poorly or meltdown because of stressors, we work on how to cope with the stressors and find ways to deal with them before I completely break down. A lot of it is mindfulness and finding solutions to things like anxiety. Recently we've been working on the TIPP skills. Temperature, Intense Exercise, Paced Breathing, and Paired Muscle Relaxation. Temperature is good when approaching a panic attack because you can use ice or cold water on your face and it kinda resets you so you can think enough to either distract or remove yourself from the situation. Stuff like that.

Answered my own question from watching more of your videos. So occupational therapy was helpful to you in your 20s! His therapists kept telling my I would be lucky to find an OT to take him, they typically work with younger kids. ?? All of this is new to me and trying to research so I can help him, and either the info is geared more to children and rather patronizing, or it’s very technical and scientific and I don’t understand it. YOU ARE A GOD SEND!! Who better to learn from than someone who actually lives it every day?? I am binging you right now to learn what I can, and I have shared with my son as well. He still has a lot of anxiety and shame about his diagnosis, and this will really help. He really is the most amazing young man and I want to help him succeed because I know he can. ❤️

I appreciate all the info you keep making known to everyone struggling with these differences in life. I was diagnosed with asd a little over a year ago at 29 and adhd shortly before that but I had no clue what to pin everything down to that I was feeling or struggling with. My counselor has helped a lot since he has extensive training with the needs I have and even with it still being someone new, I’m still seeing improvements I thought would have taken me years to see.
With so much on the interweb to research it’s not exactly easy to understand it all to an extent to make it relatable to me but I can’t thank you enough for opening my eyes to more like you have been. Occupational therapy always sounded like ways to help people work and I never really looked into it but you made it clear that it definitely is something to look into more. So thank you for your advice and I hope life keeps getting easier for you to understand.

I got my ASD diagnosis about two weeks before the lockdown and haven't been able to pursue any follow-up for it yet due to the lockdown.
I'm considering speaking to somebody about possibly seeking an ADHD diagnosis as well, because I really relate to lots of people I've seen talking about their ADHD since I began to participate in the ND community online. And I have heard you say that something like 80% of people with an ASD diagnosis probably also has ADHD.

Our whole family is autistic. Our 16 yo has an OT at her independent school in the uk. What I have learned is that not all OTs are specialists in sensory stuff. They need to be Sensory Integration trained, there‘s a qualification they need to have done, a full on whole extra year or two of training on top of the basic OT qualification. And the one my daughter has, has been brilliant. Almost her favourite person there, because she understands so much and makes some great suggestions to help. Everybody‘s sensory diet needs are different. The right sort of movement helps my dd feel better, in ways we might never have worked out for ourselves.

For your sensory processsing and your quality of life try neurofeedback. Try the one with the complete helmet. It will help you alot like me. Eye contact, joint attention, facial expression, and pragmatic conversation issues are no more a thing for me. And I'm not as good for memorizing random facts now I forget after sometimes.

im... pseudo diagnosed? i got assessed for adhd and after an interview the practitioner added a small autism test along with the others i did. it found me rather likely to be an aspie and the practitioner felt the same based on my life experiences and other such descriptions my mom and i gave. the three of us discussed it and the aspects that she described really fit- i agreed. so, that... doesnt feel equal to a diagnosis from someone looking for asd. idk, its thrown me off when im asked, pretty annoying. hmm, informal diagnosis? maybe

I have autism, adhd and ocd. So do you think that the ocd rituals will get harder to reduce when you also have autism? Since you with autism usually likes routines then pheraphs the rituals becomes routines and it well get harder to get rid off?
Also how do you know if it is your ocd rituals or autism routines? Or if it is combined.
Maybe you could do a vid on this? Or maybe you already made one?

I know that I've already commented! But I wanted to comment about your food videos. So I've always had a problem with eating lunch at school. I rather go buy a sandwich or something in the cafeteria and find a quiet place to be by myself and eat. But my mom wants me to eat in the lunch room at my school bcs it costs money and otherwise we pay for nothing. (Ill be living in a dorm this school year) I just was wondering if you had tips on how I could talk to her about that? Caus I find it really difficult to eat in the cafeteria.
