The good old days when Hollywood still had writers. They knew how to make female action heroes without them coming off as ridiculous Mary Sues. The great Writers Guild strike of 2007-2008 destroyed all that. Half the writers never came back. The rest have slowly filtered out over the past 15 years or so, and have been replaced with purple-haired gender studies grads. Now all we get is 'reimagined' stories packed with... "the message". It's all just woke plagiarism of stories that other people previously wrote.

How about just write a good story, without worrying about the politics of it (and if the politics just happen to be there, then fine....don't FORCE it). This film is a GREAT example of female equality, but it wasn't intentionally written as such, as far as i can tell....it was just a story that happened to have some strong females in it. I guess these young writers are over thinking it? It's frustrating.

And if you can simply wake up and change gender on a whim, then how can any gender claim oppression? Wouldn't it basically mean they were CHOOSING to be oppressed that day? I get confused by the circular "logic" sometimes. I guess I'm getting old!

The best bit however is the auto-gun scene. In the original, it's just listed as an asset and that's the end of it. Extended version has the aliens attacking the sentry guns, while the ammo counter ticks to zero - and it adds a feeling that they're under siege, a feeling which was absent in the original.

@@CoffeeMatt10 Cutting the discovery scene makes sense from a story-telling perspective, it pushes the reveal of the aliens WAY deeper into the movie and helps build the tension because you don't KNOW know that there's aliens, just you FEAR that there's aliens, and the scene adds nothing really to the story for you to meet Newt then rather than when it happens: you're not more connected to Newt as a character just because you saw her for 10 seconds 30 minutes earlier. It's a "less is more" moment.
Axing the scene about Ripley's daughter was a mistake though, while it wasn't NECESSARY to the story, it did add to the story.
The autoturrets to me also feels a bit off, I understand the "feeling under siege" angle and that it introduces that there's intelligence at play, but the theatrical release makes it instead feel like the aliens are more unstoppable because the humans haven't managed to successful hold a position at all, and it makes the reveal of intelligence at play in the egg room hit that much harder and unexpectedly as an "Oh! OHHHHHH!!!" moment.

The main pieces cut out of the theatrical release (137 min) versus this extended cut (154 min) are:
    1. The backstory element about Ripley's daughter (btw that photo is actually Sig Weaver's mother)
    2. Everything on LV426 prior to the Colonial Marines arriving
    3. The automatic sentry guns
Since in the short version we don't see Newt's family discovering the Alien ship, that means that the whole sequence of Ripley being recruited to go back and the prep during the voyage are in an air of mystery/uncertainty rather than action, because the viewer still doesn't know for sure whether it's really Aliens or "just a downed transmitter."
I'm not sure which version I prefer.

Well done for watching the superior Directors Cut. One scene that was left out, was Burkes real fate.
Fun Fact: Acton Power Station in west London doubled as the interior of the atmosphere processing station. When they went to film the Tim Burton adaptation of Batman, they found all of the Alien hive set still in place.
Al Matthews who played Apone was a real veteran. He was the first black marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant. He also was awarded the Purple Heart twice; along with 13 other awards. His portrayal of Apone was the inspiration for Sgt. Avery Johnson in the Halo franchise.
Also, during takes for the scene where Newt falls down the shaft, Carrie Henn kept messing up her takes in order to slide down multiple times. Also, if you watch carefully, part of the costume for Alien that takes Newt falls off.
Please, please, please ignore what people say & make sure you watch the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 to round off the trilogy. Alien 3 is a masterpiece; albeit a flawed one, with some excellent performances (Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance) & has divided fans since its release due to being so different to the previous two films. It had a very troubled production & was David Fincher’s debut.
The Assembly Cut is as close to the directors vision as we’ll ever get; the studio interfered to the point where Fincher disowned the film.
It was also the last film legendary cinematographer Jordan Crowneweth (Blade Runner) worked on; he left the project due to suffering with Parkinson’s.
Carrie Henn who played Newt is now a teacher & regularly attends Aliens events

@@bonchbonch you have a strange idea of what a “Mary Sue” character is.
She’s not stronger and smarter… well, maybe she is smarter, but she has experience of facing a Xenomorph before, and she’s not exactly young (she’s in her 80s). The marines (most of them) are portrayed as gung-ho lead slingers that just want to mow everything down and smoke a victory cigar, they get taken down because they underestimate their foe.
Ripley uses her wits. Her strength is an inner strength, a resolve that is given purpose by her bond with Newt. She’s still terrified all the way through, but her determination gets her through, just like any parent trying to protect their child.
She doesn’t even use a weapon until she is shown how to. A “Mary Sue” would’ve just picked one up and started hosing lead with deadly accuracy. The first time Ripley fires the Pulse Rifle she’s struggling to control the recoil. She has to use the Loader to help combat the Queen, and even then it’s not like she totally dominates the fight. “Mary Sue” would’ve battered the absolute tar out of the Queen and thrown her out the airlock without being pulled down with her. She’s not a superhero whose powers come out of nowhere. She is a person who learns to adapt and survive and we see that happen in front of our eyes. It’s not a flip of a switch, it’s not an “awakening” (Rey Palpatine), it’s a natural progression in the face of adversity.
We see Ripley’s development over the course of 2 movies… that is not a “Mary Sue”?

    • @bonchbonch

@@CoffeeMatt10 All you did was say I'm wrong about Ripley being smarter and stronger than every other character and then tell me that Ripley was smarter and stronger than every other character. She DID just pick up a weapon and start using it with deadly accuracy within minutes. She DID batter the absolute tar out of the Queen. You're engaging in mental gymnastics to avoid admitting that Ripley is a perfect Mary Sue. She even has psychic powers--she somehow knows Burke tried to kill her, and she INSTANTLY knows his entire plan through some sort of off-screen investigation of the cryopods that we don't even see. She's only a space trucker, yet she masters everyone's advanced weaponry, knows more than everybody else about everything, and gives the other characters orders. The only reason you don't think she's a Mary Sue is because you saw Aliens when you were a kid and hadn't yet been politically radicalized.

Great reaction to an excellent and terror-filled movie! Still one of my absolute favorites, and an absolutely fitting end to the series. i.e. don't watch any of the other travesties that defame the name of Alien. Seriously. I walked out of Alien3 within half an hour because it made me so mad that I couldn't stay. Such a travesty.
    My Aliens story is amusing:
After I graduated high school, I became an advisor for the church youth group I had belonged to before graduating. In 1988, when I was 20, we had a lock-in one fall weekend. The high school youth were allowed to pick movies to rent for the lock in. Aliens was one of the ones chosen. I had kind of seen it before, but it was as background while hanging out with friends, so I didn't know much about it. We started watching it around 11 p.m. All of the adults and most of the teens had gone to sleep in the rooms set aside for that, while a few teens and I started watching Aliens in the High School Sunday School room in the large basement of the large church. The teens went to sleep before we reached the halfway point, and I was interested so I stayed up and finished the movie.
It was now around 1 a.m. All the lights were off because everyone but me was asleep. My last task before I could sleep was to go around the open areas of the downstairs and make sure none of the teens had snuck off to do anything they shouldn't have. So here I am, walking through dark cinder block walled hallways with exposed ductwork overhead, and no lights except for the occasional faint red lights of the "Exit" signs. My heart is beating like a jackhammer as I carefully edge my way through the dark halls, knowing that there are no xenomorphs but still expecting some kind of jump scare that's going to make me lash out and crap myself at the same time. 😀 Luckily, everyone was fast asleep and I finished my rounds and went and lay down, but it was probably the least restful sleep I had and the most nervous I had ever been in church. 😀

It's intense, pulse-pounding, gloriously-scored, and perfectly shows you what kind of person Ripley is. She drives straight into her literal nightmare in order to save a group of people she barely knows. Fortunately, this was a rare case of Hollywood NOT milking a franchise until it was dead. They made no more sequels and did nothing further with the characters. Ripley and Hicks were married and raised Newt as their daughter. Bishop was saved and reassembled and remained a friend of the three humans until the end of their days.

Alien 3 is a masterpiece; a flawed one, but a masterpiece none the less.
Visually, it’s absolutely stunning & has some awesome performances.
I think what some people struggle with is the dystopian vibes from the get go. But it concludes the trilogy perfectly.
Also, it was the last film the legend that was Jordan Cronenweth ever worked on; he was director of photography on Blade Runner. Sadly he had to leave the production very early on, due to his suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

'Aliens' owes a great debt to science-fiction author Robert Heinlein and his novel 'Starship Troopers'. But I'm not sure that the 'Starship Troopers' movies would have ever been made if 'Aliens' hadn't shown the way.

I've heard that Weaver and Henn (the girl who played Newt) had a wonderful mother-daughter relationship on set. And Henn later said that her favorite scene to film was the one in the water. They had to be sure the water was nice and warm because of the amount of time she'd spend in the pool, so between takes, she and the alien would sit, splash the water with their feet, and have fun.
And make this the last movie you see from the franchise. It goes off the rails in a bad, bad way.

IMO the theatrical cut is better. The pacing is better, of course, but also they cut out all the stuff with the colonists at the beginning so when the marines land on the planet it's more suspenseful as you have no idea what happened. The other stuff that is added (scene with the autoguns, scene about Ripley's daughter) is fine... but... ultimately unnecessary.

    • @JulianP311
      @JulianP311 Год назад +1

PREACH! The people who laud the special edition only like it because they (a) had seen the theatrical cut first and (b) haven’t learned that pacing is as important as content; more isn’t always better or every movie that 3 hours long would be better than every movie that’s 90 minutes long.

    • @supersuit5790

Nah special edition > theatrical; the cut scenes add more foundation - the only one which I can agree on that is unnecessary is the colony scene with Newt's biological parents. However, everything else is fine , im glad most people prefer the special edition :)
