"Probably the most difficult car in iRacing to drive fast." And my genius here bought it as the second car on iRacing... With little competitive racing experience before. As I said: genius!
I bought it as soon as I possibly could also lol. I was not too happy after trying to drive it an realizing it refuses to turn if you don't brake exactly right into the corner. Just forces me to try an perfect my technique though
after copying your awesome attitude towards racing and maxing out my A license (oh yes A4.99), i am now trying to get some pace into my game. thanks dave for making us better drivers!
Long Beach, this past week, was a perfect track to learn aggressive braking, and trail breaking in the Porsche. You cannot get around that track without trail braking. Plus with the bumps it really is a good place to learn on. It can get frustrating if you are new to iRacing, or the Porsche, but the rewards for getting it right make you feel like you have accomplished something, imo.
I absolutely LOVE the idea of using drills to hone fine skills like this. I do it in almost every other activity and especially games. Trying to learn this while hot lapping is really difficult. Breaking it down into an activity where you can repetitively apply the technique is awesome. I did some similar stuff in the MX-5 when I first started but this shows how useful it can be for learning new cars.
Love the Cup Car. I committed to learning how to drive it a couple seasons ago. Started the season with a 1440 iRating. Ended with an 809. LOL I really do love the car, just wish it wasn't always trying to kill me
Keep in mind that when doing long races the weight of the car changes because you use fuel, brake bias 46% might be good in the beginning but maybe needs adjustment on the last few laps for example.
@@robcawood You'll want to decrease it. The fuel tank is just ahead of the windscreen so, as the fuel is depleted, the front of the car gets lighter and it will have less grip as a result. You should shift the bias rearward to prevent the front brakes from locking with the lesser grip on the tyres during cornering from the lightened front end. You only need to do a click or two once you notice that threshold braking is lower to bring that back to a normal response. Too much and you can lock the rears and cause the engine weight to rotate round on you.
Trail braking really does help in the Porsche. I started using it and noticed right away how much more settled the car felt and how much tighter I could turn. And it was easier to hold a steady line through longer turns. Great video, Dave. Thanks and Cheers!
Just wanted to thank you for not just telling us about technique, but also demonstrating it while letting us see exactly what is happening with the brake and throttle… and the overlap that occurs. I’ve always wondered how the faster drivers get a launch out of corners, and it could have been an illusion at Red Bull National layout last night, but I think while practicing the trail braking, I may have figured it out. I was taking the long right hand 4th gear sweeper and it was a bit of a surprise. A shock, really. Totally overshot the last turn because of it. 🤣 Anyway, thank you for what you do. It’s very much appreciated. 👍
Oh baby some training offered by the man himself! I can already feel the seconds I’m shaving from my time! Can this be applied into other cars/series’ by chance?
I'll have to try these drills for some of the other cars I own. Simple instructions to follow for the drills, shows how the car will handle, and easily replicable which I really like.
Thank you for the video Dave. I've been iRacing for about 6 months, and never understood the Porsches. I tried driving them and couldn't make half a lap. Sure, I've heard of trail braking, but after a few months I have enough experience to start understanding what folks are talking about. I practiced your drills for a few minutes then took the Porsche cup car out on the nurb grand prix circuit. What do you know, I could control it, and managed to even complete a lap without an off after a few times around! Then I decided to press my luck and take the 718 Cayman for a spin around mid-ohio (not my favorite track either). Whoa brother... Now I get it. I managed a 1:31.4 after about a dozen laps. Nothing impressive really, but not super embarassing either (1200iR). AND I started anticipating where the limit was and caught the car a few times. There is a lot more to learn, but now I can start the journey. Keep putting out the great videos.
Brilliant, I made the decision on Sunday to buy the car and start doing the 911 Cup.......and this comes out!!! Awesome content, thanks, can’t wait to start practicing tonight! Cheers
Love this type of video Dave. You should do more! Always watch your videos and try and learn how you take corners so fast, or dodge oncoming incidents, when to push etc. Nice to have the explainer.
Fab ty again. Just got C license so trying more powerful RWD cars including Porsche Cup. I had no idea such small bias changes were significant. I shall now get experimenting! I also aassume these tips will apply to most RWD cars not just Porsche.
Watching this in season #4 2022, trying to get my nerve up for Porsche Cup this season. I'm not near your level, but I'm learning to at least get around without crashing in this car, if not competitive yet. I appreciate this video, as I'm sure the new Porsche drives in a similar manner. Great drills sir!
Great work again Dave. Really helped my understanding. Especially on my problems on corner exit. I wish you would do more of these. I benefited a lot from you instruction video from Spa about using all of the track.
Thank you! I've just started the cup car. It's a beast to handle. Think if you can drive this car good with all these techniques you will drive any car a lot better. Thank you for this instruction. Will focus on these techniques.
I know this is old, but blipping the throttle is required for downshifting this car? Idk why I thought it had a dog box and auto blipped for me lol you have taught me so well, Dave! I have my first IRL road rally with my WRX this Saturday and most things I’ve learned have been from you! Cheers, Dave! 👊🏽
Dave, thank you so much! This is brilliant! I think this is exactly what I need to take my driving to the next level. I'm going to practice these 3 skills from tomorrow. Thank you once again. Your 'learn the track' series is absolutely amazing too.
Thanks, Dave! I drive the cup car 90% of the time and love it, but am not very good at it. Hopefully this will help. Getting a better wheel and pedals than the T150's would help as well. The one thing about driving the cup car is that it has made me faster in anything else I drive. They all seem controllable in comparison.
You can learn trail braking in a simulator by braking later and later and engaging your survival instinct, pumping the brakes to make the apex, eventually you'll smooth it out and just release the brakes in a few little steps or twitches off and on. Ultimately your braking plot should look about like the lower leg of a sine curve.
very cool video and this is my favorite car in the iracing, but, it has been very difficult to improve my performance in my T500, some tracks are torture with it
