Wow. This update hits me on a personal level as this has been my biggest struggle with making music. Lyrics combined with my limited vocal range/abilities has been a musical punch in the gut for me and I had started watching some of the various songwriting videos on youTube to help get me out of it.
I feel that your description of the lyric writing process is very similar to the process I typically find myself pursuing, and it's incredibly motivating to see that it is possible to create fantastic music that way. Thank you for being so candid and open about your life and artistic process for all of us. ♥️
I always find myself writing lyrics. Then, I realized I wrote a line the exact same way two albums prior. Hand them off to my vocalist. When it's brought to my attention. "Hey, this same line was in this song." I go ahead and make the changes only to re-write the entire song's lyrics. My point? Being a drummer, writing lyrics, and handing them off. Is a lesson I cherish because it forces me to write in new ways of expressing words in new ways.
The initial insights involving ‘effective distraction’ mechanisms…sounds a lot to me like stimming. I know that’s saying a lot (a whole lot), but as someone who relies upon stimming (because I understand it), it’s generally easy to spot. For those who need it, it’s more than essential. For the self-aware, the torture is accepting it. And for the ‘pro’, the win is incorporating it into situations and environments that always generate anxiety. The alternative is tolerating anxieties that in many ways will never go-away.

However, getting my hands in the clay of the medium -- sketching, doodling, or noodling on the guitar -- is where I get things done. Or, at least, get them started. My conscious brain is too insecure to make any decisions. Following my gut and creative intuition are my compass.

You’ve found a course of action that works for you in this moment. That may change but, Dude, your self-aware enough to recognize that. When I was in university I realized in the 2nd year that if I spread out my work load and evenly paced my writing of papers over the allowed time period I would consistently receive 2s and 3s (B’s and C’s). But life situations found me completing entire term papers the night before their due date. I done all the reading of course (even on the throne) but did the entire paper between 8pm and 3am of one night. I had a complete run of A grades on papers for the rest of my time in school. With different Professors and Different subjects. What works works. Maybe not in every situation. Roll with it.

Sounds kind of like automatic writing that writers use when they are blocked or looking for ideas. That inner critic...i think best shown recently by Ren in Hi Ren. It sounds crazy when you hear it in someone else's head but you laugh because you know you fall for it in your own head. 😊
I found a podcast from a guy called Joseph Vadala called Songwriter Theory and he has a RUclips channel as well. He's got a great 6 steps system for lyrics writing I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone wanting to find a way to write lyrics more easily.
I've found that some lyrical ideas I have take a little while for me to understand what they mean to me. I'm curious if it's an unconscious expression becoming conscious, or if I'm generating meaning in that jumble of words.
Dev, I can crank my volume, but not everyone has the means. Maybe you upload raw camera footage, but if you could be bothered to add a limiter it would make a world of a difference. There are ways to remux audio if you don't have time to "render" a new copy of the video. I could help expedite the process if needed, email address in my channel info. Right-click your own video, choose "stats for nerds" and it'll show how far you're off from the -14LUFS normalization target. Any negative number means you're low, hopefully people listening on laptop speakers can still hear you over ambient noise. You're a savvy ATMOS boy, you're capable of this, I believe in you. I thought the Beatles had a cool process of recording a song then work on the next song And just keep going focusing on one song at a time. It’s funny im a painter but when I do a entire house I focus on one section at a time or it can get overwhelming. The same with music 🎼 but whatever works best for you

I've tried all kinds of methodical strategies for writing lyrics and music, but they don't work for me because they're safe and methodical and - least for me - after the initial spark, the thing that keeps the creative flame stoked all the way through is uncertainty and playfulness. I'm sure the methodical approach should feel playful though. I need to figure that out
@3:30ish....I hate lyrics....I can write them, but it's a bitch to "melodically associate" lyrics to music for me....a good riff with no good words, or vice versa. I need to practice more....I sense a song called "Phuque" in my future..... Much love from Sidney
