Stars off Transcendence is one of my favorite Dev songs period. I understand it was created in a challenge to write and record a track quickly. You're telling me Powernerd is ALL that? Fuckin let's go

One of the most comforting things about these updates is hearing that the things i've been doing/um-ing and ah-ing over in my own music aren't unique to me. Specifically, adding or changing shit just because i've heard a given song enough times that if they were Spotify spins, i'd have made a dollar.

I've recently discovered these. The thought process, methods, etc are fascinating. My son plays bass in a metal band. He and his friend who is the lead guitarist and backup vocalist do most of the recording, etc. I'm forwarding this to him. It might be helpful. A bit of sage advice never hurts. My son's friend reminds me a bit of Dev in his younger days LOL. I've known him since he was a kid. Either way, thanks for the updates. I love your music and I look forward to hear what comes next. I've been a metalhead since my teen years. We're the same age btw.

7:45 It's kind of like waves in water. If you drop two rocks in different spots, it may be the case that the peak of one wave meets up with the trough of the other wave, and they cancel out and leave a flat boring spot in the pond where nothing is going on. Adjust the locations where you drop the rocks, and those waves can combine and add to each other as opposed to deleting each other. Drums are particularly susceptible to this, especially in metal when you might have a dozen or more mics. You can lose the transient attack of your kick or snare, for example, which is huge in metal.

Maybe it is the purpose of art, of music especially, to remind us of these raw and unmoderated experience of emotions we had when we were young. The moment we lose connection to these emotions, we also stop listening. And vice versa.

  • @AdamTurnerDrumming

As an amateur drummer, this was an amazing update. All the things you’ve discussed are things I’ve worked through in my quest of self-recording drums. It’s amazing to hear you talk about all these issues.
I don’t have the luxury of kit selection as I don’t own multiples, but tuning and cymbal choice are definitely something I work hard on. Loved your discussion on phase too - getting it wrong can make a great drum performance sound weak and muddy.
Can’t wait to hear Powernerd. I don’t know why, but every time you talk about it all the down tempo songs give me the vibe of something Metallica “Black Album”ish.

I had the profile name Devlin Powers for a while. What I wondering, on the lightworker video, that shipwreck the guy in the lighthouse dreamt of, or maybe a memory. Was it caused by the octopuss, or did the octopuss signify everything that held the ligtworker back?

I would love to see Devin sit down with Rick Ruben, let alone work together. Vastly different in musical journey but philosophically similar. I also think Rubins method of “reducing” would benefit Devin so greatly because as he said, he finds that he adds too much or changing too much because to be in the moment is to not over think by working out the same parts over and over instead of moving onto the new idea. I love these videos though, artists need to do these more. Its important content, unlike so much of what else is on RUclips. This is about relatable information from artist to artists, not clicks and likes.

What I notice is when "m not overthinking and endlessly altering the music it maintained more of it's spontaneous creative intend. I notice that the more I keep working on tracks to make it sound special or different it in the end does the opposite and when listing let's say a year later in relation to my other work it sounds less unique.

Darby is an amazing drummer. He has a wonderful instinct when to sit back a bit. He knows when to add a little flavor to assist in ramping up a riff's intensity.
Some cymbals with a nasty shrill can be annoying. Some can underwhelm & fail to sustain when it's needed. However, it's also a drummer's ability to lighten how hard you hit and how you hit, right?
As a drummer, when I hear about picking the right cymbal. Man, my anxiety ramps up with thoughts of over analyzing. For me, things start coming out too clean because sometimes that one cymbal that sustains too long or has a shrill tone turns out to be that one small element adding intensity.
Doesn't matter in the end. We all have our own trip.

Dev's commentary on the Powernerd demos has got me thinking about St. Anger. I think the intent behind that album was to be a return to form METAL album with a breath of fresh air. However, the decisions made in recording and mixing seemed to be more focused on fabricating rawness and intensity rather than being in service of the music. I'm very interested to hear how this record turns out. Thanks for the update as always, Dev.

Its quite disapointing what happened to Devin after DTP. Empath was a very solid but so much overproduced album that it takes very special mood and strenght to listen. After that so many words, podcast and philosophy to when we are now. 2024 and bored Devin promotes something sounding like AI generated djent band. This time you "just" have to get sign to be recognized by someone famous. Couldn't even listen this chinese djent single feat. Dev to the end. You could be excellent innovative creator and nobody cares if you are not in the camp of a certain label. Its even more sad if you remind who Devin was before and how independent he was as an artist in his prime years. Shure IO (?) is well executed but reading Devin who in one statement says music he listen is dissapointing and boring and on the other hand promotes good but absolutely standard and obvious prog metal/ djent track... Sometimes you wonder whether ( on certain lvl of success) those guys have any connection with a reality or live in a bubble when anything they get is from promoter label or someone connected to their business.
