上を向いて歩こう Ue o Muite Arukō (I keep my head up high)"SUKIYAKI" Quarantine Japanese Artists in NYC

- This is a difficult time not only for freelance artists like ourselves, but everyone from restaurant workers, students, family members and especially medical care workers due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Many of us are suffering financially and more than anything, mentally.
I am not usually the type to get upset, but since the "New York State on Pause" order took effect, I lost all of my motivation as an actor because we can not predict what's gonna happen next.
After watching Governor Cuomo's press conference and world celebrities sing John Lennon's Imagine, I regained hope.
I am an artist. My mission is to deliver my message to you all by expressing under any circumstances. I thought it is time that we, as artists stand up together for all over the world and our Japanese community. That's why I decided to make a video of Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukō) song by Mr. kyu Sakamoto, with lyrics by Mr. Rokusuke Ei and music by Mr. Hachidai Nakamura.
I caught myself singing this song the other day and it cheered me up. I hope this video will send a message to all over the world and our Japanese community as well as an appreciation to Governor Cuomo.
We are facing an unprecedented situation, but we are not alone.
We are all in this together, and will eventually get through this challenge.
Let’s keep our heads up high.

Ue o Muite Arukō (I keep our head up high) ”Sukiyaki”
I keep my head up high when I walk
So the tears won't fall
Remembering those spring days
But tonight I'm all alone
I keep my head up high when I walk
Counting the stars, but they are blurry
Remembering those summer days
But tonight I'm all alone
Beyond the clouds, there is joy
Above the sky, there is joy
I keep my head up high when I walk
So the tears won't fall
I walk and I cry
For I am alone tonight
Remembering those autumn days
But tonight I'm all alone
Behind the stars, there is sorrow
Behind the moon, there is sorrow
I keep my head up high when I walk
So the tears won't fall
Remembering those spring days
But tonight I'm all alone
But tonight I'm all alone

This is ADORABLE. I've always felt a sadness and a sense of nostalgia when listening to this song which is impossible since I'm not Japanese and wasn't born when the song was popular. Guess life really is strange. Anyway, stay safe everyone.
As a Dutch 9 year old, I heard this song played in the background of the stores. In my twenties I found out what song it was and who sang it. Now I am 50 and I still love this song. And now I found this version that gives me as much joy during this time as the original. Thank you all, made my day even shine brighter! Arigatou gozaimasu!!
Thank you for watching! I'm so glad to hear that.
Respect for you Harm San !
Hee Harm, wat voor winkels waren het en in welke jaren? Ik heb dit lied alleen op een lp van de Blue Diamonds gehoord...

This is so beautiful and I truly mean it. Even though I learned the language of my ancestors (German), I wish I went for Japanese instead as it's such a beautiful language and culture. it's great to see people in my home country singing such a great song. Sakamoto made a song that can touch us all regardless of where we are and that is one of the things that make his song great... and his song actually re inspired me to start learning Japanese long after my childhood Japanese neighbor ignited the flame of appreciation of Japanese culture many years ago.
I do not speak Japanese but I know the words to this song in Japanese.
In one word, this production is absolutely brilliant. I was nine years old in 1963 when Kyu Sakamoto rocketed to #1 for three weeks knocking Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" off the top of the charts. In the three weeks prior to hitting #1, Sukiyaki moved up 43 positions on the Billboard weekly Hot 100. Nobody knew what he was singing about but they couldn't stop humming and tapping their feet to this song.
The piano part really rocks. The "whistling" interlude being replaced by the clanking of glasses is great. Putting the singers all together in a video collage took this production over the top. Thanks for sharing.
Rip Kyu Sakamoto! May we take the greatness from his song! As a covid survivor I still walk alone....Keep your head up! Many thanks to the Japanese artists! Great song with curry and anime with my kids.
He died in the crash of JAL Flight 123...

Thank you so much from an Australian nurse working with covid patients. A song that brings both a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. Looking forward to the day I can visit NY and Japan once again. I hope all of you are doing ok now. Take care, and thanks again.
From an Aussie in California my sincere thanks for all your and your coworkers hard work with during the epidemic. This song is so beautiful and wonderfully made with these lovely people. Thank you all so much.
Was looking for the original, but when I realized what this was, instead I'm playing this version in honor of all restaurant workers.

I think Sakamoto Kyu-sama would be proud of this cover. I heard this song when I was a child though I didn't understand any of it and I didn't even know it was Japanese, but not too long ago the song came up again and that was when I found out. That's when I also found out that Sakamoto-sama unfortunately died in the plane crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123 on 12 August 1985. Great effort and arigatou gozaimashita for this cover.

My wife left this world on May 12, 2019. Although I have heard this song many times, I learned the translation of the lyrics a few months later on another video - around what what would have been our 25th anniversary. It reflects my feelings exactly, and hearing the song, or seeing the lyrics still brings me to tears.
May she Rest In Peace and may you find solace.
Japanese Artist in NYC have a nice smile - feels very good - greetings from portugal
Japanese music/songs have a unique flow of melody that sometimes you don't realize that the meaning of the lyric is actually sad or sometimes tragic, when i was a teenager i used to think that this song is a love song, then i realized this song actually was about someone trying to move on after getting dumped or separated with his couple,...
anyway stay strong and safe people,...
Very nicely done! Thank you for your production and your feelings in the video description. Please, hang in there. We'll all get through this! 頑張ってください!

I remember this song from two films, one was M.A.S.H. the movie, and the other was with Suzie Quan, I think that was her name, William Holden was in it too. Wow, that was great, the way they all got together thru the internet and presented it in a very lovely way. Thank you all for your home production. Keep healthy and happy.

This was wonderful to see and to hear! I remember this song from decades ago when it first became popular in the West and was known (inappropriately) as "Sukiyaki" -- only because that was one of the few single Japanese words Americans recognized at the time (and which they still managed to mispronounce!).
Thank you so much. Let's Ue o muite Aruko!!

Today(August 12, 2022) is the 37th anniversary after the death of Kyu Sakamoto.
I found on RUclips his last voice and singing before his tragic death on the same day.
The public recording of NHK-FM radio ''Song Special - Kyu Sakamoto'' occurred in the afternoon August 12. 1985.

For more than 1 reason this brought tears of joy especially at this time. I remember the original recording Sukiyaki. Bring on the 60´s. Thank you. L. A. Luvs you.
Thank you. This song is great song. I'm always cheered me up by this song.
I actually still have the entire album, with Kyu Sakamoto flicking his cigarette ash, sitting on a box of Dynamite (labeled in Japanese)! Over time, my favorite on the album is Side 2, track 1, Boku No Hoshi (My Star), a more Japanese minor key, with Western jazz saxophone blending perfectly, and though I understand none of the words, the visual abstract images it evokes are profoundly melancholy and moving beyond words. Sakamoto was one of the 520 killed in 1985, when a Boeing 747 crashed in Japan, still the deadliest single-aircraft disaster in history. To say that a song like this brings back memories is an understatement, for sure. I just never felt anything from the country cover in English ten or more years ago.
That was lovely, y’all did a great job!
