Meleys The Red Queen spared the lives of King Aegon II & his whole family in House of the Dragon
Princess Rhaenys while imprisoned by Queen Alicent Hightower, escaped and approached with her dragon Meleys. She could have roasted the entire family of Otto Hightower, Aemond Targaryen, Helena Targaryen, but she spared their lives by a gesture of mercy and a warning.
Meleys, nicknamed the Red Queen, is a she-dragon ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Covered in scarlet scales, she has accents of bright copper. It is her unique coloring for which she received her nickname. In her youth, she is said to have outpaced even Caraxes and Vhagar.

Despite all his faults you cannot deny Otto has balls. Every time he comes on that bridge he gets surrounded by dragons but comes back anyway.
He knows they don't have the power to kill him because it would mean Rhaenyra can't be diplomatically talked since she kills messengers and the realm would support Aegon's rule more. That's why the last episode was such a debacle for the Greens, they bloodied their hands first before the first round of talks ends which means other lords not only think they are vile kinslayers but would rather support someone more diplomatically worthy of their trust.

Rhaenyra is right in calling Otto a traitor. He conspired against the wishes of the previous king to displace the rightful heir to the throne, even to the point where he was willing to order her and all her children murdered. And he thinks that House Stark would even consider breaking an oath?
It's what's best for the realm. Rhaenyra had illegitimate kids who would have become king and queen. Also the son always comes before the daughter... any other king would have changed his hier but viserys was not smart.
@@joshua6207 I wouldn't have any issue with Jacaerys inheriting the throne. Even if he is illegitemate, he'd clearly be a good king and that is what should count above all else. Plus, can you honestly claim that Aegon would be a better monarch than Rhaenyra? As loose as she was in her youth, she at least mellowed out and became more responsible and dedicated in her role as heir apparent; Aegon just stayed a drunken, raping wastrel and made no effort to improve himself.

Tyland Lannister at that point had already divided the treasurey and ensured that even in a case of rhyenyras temporary victory shed be ruined, wich is exactly what happend.
The war was literally over before it began, you can win battles or sieges but if you cant rule or feed the people you are no king or queen.

The dance of the dragons ultimately left the kingdom dragon less and the Targaryens lost what made them powerful and ultimately, they were then finally killable which is exactly what happens. Only a few kings later, the mad king and his children all die. Obviously, I’m the books, Danaerys is still alive but she gave up on the iron throne and left the land.

I'm currently re-watching Game of Thrones and when everyone saw Drogon they were about to shit themselves, but since dragons were common during this time these guys saw Syrax like it's just another Tuesday.
The first episode shows it the best. The citizens of KL don't even give a second glance when Syrax comes home from her flight.
If the characters in Attack on Titan (anime) behave consistent with their character identity across 4 seasons, even through minor details about how they relate to each other over time, the least GoT -> HoTD can do is have some basic reactions of everyone correct based on it's own directed and obvious lore.
The main characters of HoTD are a mess in terms of making sense to any prior, maybe stated or observed, desires. Yes, I'm saying the writing is inconsistent, and maybe it'll take another season or two before the audience with writing quality standards leave like The Walking Dead. If you didn't jump ship before season 4/5 of that show, it really didn't matter how poorly put together the production was or how silly unnbelievable the characters in it had become. 1 bad season and 1 terrible last seasons of GoT, one very subpar (probably even bad) season of HoTD. For me, I'll only watch one more season that bad before I only pay attention through headlines.

Otto is the epitome of a great game of thrones character. Little finger said the best way to manipulate someone is to get them to do your bidding as if it was their own intent. Otto showed his true hand with that very first offer of peace for the realm while rhaenyra acknowledges aegon but then plays the dirty move by showing the page from the book to play on her mercy. Rhaenyra realistically should have captured Otto and held him prisoner and then began her conquest. She’d have the hand and grandfather of the king while then he would also be leverage in negotiations while if he didn’t have any use they could end him right there.

Rhaenyra should have arrested Otto and everyone who accompanied him to Dragonstone for treason. Also, since it was so easy for Blood and Cheese to get into the Red Keep, they should have gone straight for Aegon & Aemond and killed them. Then Daemon should have helped Rhaena claim Vermithor. Then they should have all flown over with all their dragons and claimed the Red Keep, arresting Alicent. After Rhaenyra is crowned, they should fly to Old Town and burn down Hightower to set an example. Then burn Alicent and Otto alive on her coronation day as punishment for their treason but also, she gets the satisfaction of having them see her sit the Iron Throne with Daemon by her side, Rhaenys as her hand, Jace as heir to the Iron Throne with Baela as his queen-to-be and Joffery as the new heir to Driftmark with Rhaena as his lady-to-be.
Edit: Helaena and her children are the only ones who will be spared but none of her children or descendants will be allowed to learn High Valyrian, claim dragons or marry into noble houses. At the slightest sign of treason or vengeance, they'll be burnt alive.
Yes agreed. But Rhaenyra wanted to not move because war and bloodshed wasn't what she wanted. It was a very noble decision, but a very poor one at the same time. Daemon also chokes her because it was such a foolish decision plus she did not want to start the war and her actions had consequences. Had she done this, perhaps Luke could have survived too.

Rhaenyra, like all the so-called good guys/people with some sort of morals in the show, made a similar mistake. You never let a snake live if you have a chance to chop it's head off. Killing Otto alongwith all of his thugs would have been such a powerful move on Rhaenyra's part.

It would have also been the thing that kickstarted the war, which she didn't want at the moment. In Westerosi culture killing a messenger is taboo, her killing Otto would have made a lot of the houses who were still considering who to side with side with the Greens. Yes, we know the war was inevitable, but Rhaenyra was still considering her options, and I can't stress this loudly enough, killing a messenger is *major* taboo in Westeros. It's why Aemond killing Lucerys is going to be such a huge problem for him and the Greens, because it's killing a messenger as well as kinslaying.
Why is everyone talking about killing Otto as if that wouldn't have led to the war starting even sooner? 😅

You people weren’t paying attention. Rhaenyra wasn’t perfect but she would have made a better ruler than Aegon by far. Even Aegon knew it. The dance started because the conditions were already prime due to the Hightowers scheming and seeds of dissent planted in the family. Rhaenyra would’ve accepted the terms anyway, until as far as she could possibly reason, *they killed her son in cold blood.* Please someone sit here and tell me if they had access to basically nuclear launch codes but were vying for peace anyway and then the other side just MURDERED your child, you would react calmly and diplomatically. Aegon was so consumed with winning power he literally bankrupted kings landing which led to the tax levied Rhaenyra had to put up to compensate, which of course made the lower classes angry. At first the people where happy with her rule because Aegon was so unpopular, hell even after the Queen died he still couldn’t garner enough support, and was so hated such that he was poisoned xD.

Besides that, the small folk are most of the population, there really wasn’t much nobility to tax and taxing the nobles more heavily would have led to a noble rebellion so it would have led to the same outcome

And even if we take you're side on this, you'd have the entire Hightower line wiped out or banished over the actions of... what, one, maybe 2 Hightower's at best? Seriously? Why should the Hightowers be purged? If they're to be purged, so should over half of Westeros. Many major houses sided against Rhaenyra, and the Hightowers were only one of them.
You're as unreasonable as Daemon and Rhaenyra. Viserys and Rhaenyra are the ones who were Unworthy of the Crowns they held, and as Targaryens they should've known better.
Jaehaerys KNEW what would happen if the succession wasn't settled, and so he made a Great Council. And even then, the Council reaffirmed that Jaehaerys was right in making the Eldest Male Heir the prime claim to the Throne.
Viserys was a terrible father who should've raised Aegon 2 right and prepared him to Rule. So now, we have Rhaenyra and Aegon 2, both unsuited to be rulers of Westeros.

Important thing to note regarding terms is that Rhaenyra would be made "lady of Dragonstone" not "princess of Dragonstone". Prince/princess of Dragonstone is the title given to the heir to the Iron Throne. She would probably be styled as princess the same way Rhaenys is, but it would be a downgrade not just from her new position, even from the position she helds from the first episode.
And these terms are really bad, almost designed to start a war. If Alicent wanted Rhaenyra to accept, she should have offer her some hostages, and some marriage alliance. Aegon's children are betrothed to each other, but that could be broken and they could be instead promised to the future children of Jacaerys and Baela, uniting branches. Win-win.
Alicent would never agree to marry her kids to a line with Bastard blood. Also if u give rhaenyra hostages that would incentives her and strengthen her political position. The only way to fix this was to wed Aegon II to rhaenrya and name him heir, but that ship sailed a long time ago

The saddle is even more elaborate now that she is queen.
Otto is so shameful to appear in front of the rightful heir of the throne. Viserys trusts him, respects him, values him throughout his life. He lets his daughter to be queen, he offers him glory and titles and making him the second most powerful man behind the king. All he wants before dying is the family to live in peace, and this is how he repays him.
Both blacks and greens are no good in truth, but Otto is one of the worst in this conflict.
Otto knew the moment Alicent bore a son that he had a way to unseat Rhaenyra. The world simply wasn’t ready for that change without reason. Viserys unmade his own attempt at rewriting history for his daughter through his own weakness. I suspect a lot of Daemon’s frustration with his brother stemmed with him seeing Otto’s intent from the start but stymying his own efforts at trustworthiness through his own impulsive and ambitious actions.
You are absolutely right. Be mad at Otto all you want but he knew how the game was played. Daemon saw it too, but again Viserys was a weak king.
I'm genuinely happy that the ''teAM bLaCk'' phase of cringe ''girlboss'' tiktokkers supporting the impulsive ticking time bombs because they have kinky sex with people they shouldn't so they can ''live freely'' is taking a backseat to actual objective evaluation of the plot lately. Yes, Otto is a selfish schemer, but he did have the right of it.

And as much as an ambitious bastard as Otto was, he had several valid points about Daemon. He’s willing to use murder to get what he wants, even against women and innocents. And his talk of restoring the House of the Dragon to its “proper glory” would’ve ensured the days of peace were done.
An idealistic change always happens against the grain, and it's always brought in by dragging the world kicking and screaming along with it. And hell, in Dorne, she would have been entirely unopposed, and nobody would have batted an eye at her children's parentage.
Viserys' only mistake was having more children. If Rhaenyra was all he had, then the realm would have been forced to accept a woman as ruler, because who else would they take? Daemon? Nobody liked him. Rhaenys? Yeah, that would be ironic, given they voted her down the first time. Rhaenyra could have dragged the Seven Kingdoms into a new era, if only Viserys hadn't remarried and begot a son who the realm would root for to replace his daughter.

They now see him as a legitimate king to the iron throne. A political power move that ensures that he is the “true” heir to the throne.

True Targaryens, who are on the other hand, would feel cheated, even if the whole thing was a Hightower conspiracy. They are traditionally speaking the rightful heirs. She also has “true Targaryens” sons with daemon. So no matter how you see it she has all rights of the throne. Aegon only has superficial legitimacy that can be easily lost which he will.

At this point if we could change episodes from the book so rhaenyra and her allies win and live up to some point, it wouldn’t really matter because either way Rhaenyra’s son ends up on the throne.
