Yes, that’s right we are not tasting your run of the mill, liter bottle, everyday wines but the greatest wines, from the great producers, that money can buy. This time we will taste the 1983 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Capsule by JJ Prüm - Let’s do this!

I tasted Wehleneder Sonnenuhr from 1993. Exceptionally good, but currently I pfrefer Frith Haag or Tesch, especially when it comes to price-performance ratio.

For the first 5-8 years of drinking wine, all I knew & drank were the wines of Joh. Jos. Prum. I've been lucky to have a few from the 80's, 90's, and about 10-12 bottles from 2001 over the years. For me, JJ Prum was the foundation of what I understood German wine to be, grace, intensity, clean, & long-lived. Of all the wines I've had over the years, the one I continue to search out & buy whenever I find it is the 2001

JJ Prum is one of my favourite German producers alongside with Robert Weil. I am Chinese, and I like to pair my Spatlese with mildly spicy Thai or Chinese cuisine, and occasionally with sashimi and seafood sushi too. Thanks for sharing your knowledge in the video. Cheers!

Your review triggered my memory that I have a few bottles of 1983 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese stashed away that I bought in the mid '80s for $13/750. Sadly, not gold capsule. Still, can't wait to try one. I like sweet Rieslings with spicy Chinese or Thai food.

Had my first Auslese JJ last summer at a pop up wine bar on Seneca Lake in NY. It was a 2012 Gold Cap. Had it with a free range barbecued chicken. It was a beautiful wine. Being with my love, eating good food, looking over a beautiful lake, drinking a memorable wine.....just a great evening.

My wine mentor, Dennis Dinsmore, shared 2 bottles of Prum at a Thanksgiving meal. He opened a 1976 Prum Graacher Himmerlich Auslese and a 1976 Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese. I vividly remember the experience. To be nearly 30 years of age and still showing fruit and freshness, was something I could not get over. I love old Riesling.

We are huge fans of JJ Prum and have been drinking their wines for over 30 years, we have had everything from their Riesling Kabinett’s to Riesling Auslese’s namely the 1983 and 2006 vintages. We actually paired the 2006 with a Mogul brazed Indian curry dish my wife prepared and we were actually surprised how well it went. Thanks for another great video.

Joh Jos Prum is my favorite wine producer in the world. It’s extremely hard to come by in Indiana in the United States, but I have a amassed about 100 bottles in my cellar. My favorite thus far is the 2001 WS Auslese. I have had it twice and it’s been remarkable both times. I will continue to pay the prices to get this wine to Indiana. I’m jealous of all of the European wine lovers who can get this much easier. JJ Prum will likely always be my #1 producer and one if my bucket list items is to some day visit the winery. Thanks for sharing this. I hope to see more JJ Prum in the future!

JJ Prüm wines are amazing. If you get a chance to have a tasting at the winery you would need to try and arrange in advance. I had a wonderful tasting there in 2015 with Dr Katarina Prüm that was truly memorable as well as tasting with Oliver Haag at Weingut Fritz Haag. I love the 2001 vintage wines at Prüm.

@@larrydalton2205 That is truly amazing @larrydalton2205. I can only imagine how special it would be to have a tasting on site with Katarina Prum at the vineyard. I contacted the winery a couple of years ago about an auction bottle I purchased and Mihailo at the vineyard was super kind and unbelievably helpful. I can only imagine a tasting there would be top class. I’m afraid I likely don’t have the clout to have an actual tasting there, but I would love to visit and have a glass on-site. You definitely did something right along the way to a tasting with Katarina Prum AND also with Oliver Haag at Fritz Haag . I am truly jealous and also happy for you at the same time. I would love to hear about those tastings sometime if you have ever written about them or if you make content. Thanks for the response. It’s always a pleasure to be able to communicate with other passionate Riesling lovers.

@CurdBros Sorry, I don't produce content. I'm just a German riesling lover. I don't have any clout in the wine world and was surprised to get the tasting as I had contacted the Prüm winery some weeks before our trip and told no appointment was available. However about one day before leaving the USA I got a second email from the estate which said if I could attend on one specific date and time only, could my wife and I attend the tasting. It worked perfectly although I would have adjusted my schedule in any way possible to be there. About two weeks ago I was just able to buy a nice mix of 14 JJP wines (kabinett and spätlese) from the 2018 and 2019 vintage locally in San Antonio at a very good price. Very pleased at that.

    Hi Constantin MW,
I’m a drinker from Bangkok, Thailand. Although a relatively new followers of your for over a month or so, I found your videos truly amazing with the way you casually go through tastings, background information in a relax, yet informative manner. You simplify rather complicated wine making technique, vineyard history while at the same time providing your own experience. Me and my brothers are huge fans of your channel so please keep up the efforts!
We have been fond Bordeaux drinkers but we are relatively new to Riesling and German Riesling are our favourite so far. It would be great if you can share us your opinions on the
    1) different style of dry German Riesling from different region
    2) unique characteristics of German Riesling in comparison to the Austrian or Alsatian Riesling
    3) lastly, your tasting of best value German Trocken (Dry) and other sweetness levels (Auslese, spatlese, or even BA and TBA Riesling.
WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW YOUR CHANNEL AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

Every time I watch one of your videos I find something to add to the "must try" list (and the "must earn more money to pay for them" list).
I haven't tried any of the Prum wines. I do love Dr Loosen's, so I can only imagine how good JJ is. I did try one very old Riesling. It was from the "Russian Imperial cellar" (whatever that might be) and a very good friend of mine picked it up when she was sort of in the wine business. It was from 1933. I wasn't sure what to expect but I did a braised guinea fowl with dried mushrooms to partner it. (I had a good rioja as a stand in, just in case the wine was undrinkable). The wine was interesting. The cork was very short and I wasn't sure there would be anything much left of the wine, which was very dark. It tasted it's age (quite a lot of tertiaries) but the very strange thing was that there was still some fruit as well as acidity. It was really a glimpse in to a bygone age. And the food pairing worked well.

As I've understood due to climate change the kabinet level (especially during a great year like 2019) no longer feel like "watered down", but the prices haven't adjusted to the new reality. Or would you rather aim for the spatlese white capsue? anything above that gets too expensive for me. Thanks

Yes, buy it but keep it for at least 5 years before opening it.

@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine thank you very much! Of course I'd store it in the wine cabinet, I was planning to drink it during 2025

i must be abnormal, eating and drinking does not work for me. i get faded, most often cross-faded, i let the hunger rise before eating and then im done for the day. no more drinking after i ate it totally rekt my digestion.

How do you think this will pair with goat's cheese?

Would rather drink a Sancerre with my Crottin de Chavignol but it might work!

@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine Im not disagreeing with you re. the Sancerre - just curious how this might pair with some aged Chèvre, a ripe fig and some onion marmalade...
