This song is a traditional English hymn first published in 1931. That Cat took it to #1 on the easy-listening chart is a testament to his unique voice and styling.
I did not realize that. Thanks Carol! And yes it may have eventually became big on "easy-listening" stations but when it first came out it was just a great hugely popular song played on rock/pop stations everywhere.
@@flubblert Yes, it went to #6 on the pop charts and #1 on easy listening.
Written by the wonderful Eleanor Farjeon, an English writer of children's books. :-)
For those who don't know, Rick Wakeman of YES played piano on this beautiful song.
No, I didn’t know that? Ty
@@scottlaughlin9897 You're welcome Scott.
I was waiting for someone to say that. Love Rick.
@@susangonsalves9636 As do i.
I did not know that!
When you listen to this you shouldn't be surprised that he would eventually walk away from the spotlight and devote his life to religion. He was indeed a very special artist. We could definitely use a little bit of Cat Stevens today. You should check out "Moon Shadow" next.
Yes yes, “Moonshadow” 💯
He's still around.
There is also a song called Tuesday's dead that is awesome
@@kentclark6420 absolutely Don. Made a few late night TV appearances a few years back. Still sounds great! Hard to believe this song came out 50 years ago!! smh.
We DO have The Cat today. He just did a 50 year remake of the entire "Tea For The Tillerman" album which is wonderful.
Have always loved Cat Stevens. Great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his Tea For The Tillerman. Morning Has Broken is on the album Teaser & The Firecat. This is probably one of my favorites but I like all his songs. All the songs on both albums are great. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great. Check out his song Matthew & Son.
That's not his name any more
@@barbmurray1821 Yes I know it is Yusuf. But he will always be Cat to me.
What can I say. Class
Sad Lisa. Lady d’abaville and how can I tell you. We’re forever remembered close to my heart
Thanks for your hard work. You bring joy🙂
This is a very old hymn that we sang all through school, at assembly. Usually accompanied by a teacher on a very out of tune piano! Such a beautiful version.
Rick Wakeman of Yes on piano.
Rick Wakeman of Rick Wakeman, also
@@Vrealita And ARW!
More of his songs "Wild World", "Moonshadow"," Oh Very Young", "Don't Be Shy", "Father & Son" (which was in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2) . The song " First Cut Is the Deepest " which has been covered by Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow and others. And if you want to watch a movie that is mostly Cat Stevens music watch "Harold and Maude".
Oh Very Young is one of my favourite songs ever!
If you like Rick Wakeman's piano on this track, wait til you hear his piano on "South Side of the Sky" by Yes.
Yes Rick Wakeman is always phenomenal and has released well over 100 albums.
And on "Life On Mars?" by David Bowie.
@@shyshift Look Rick up in the book of world records. Master Wakeman has recorded more music than anyone on the planet. I have about 50 of his solo works. Rick is definitely the GOAT!
@@jeffschielka7845 Space Oddity has Rick Wakeman playing Mellotron sounding like an orchestra.
@@shyshift David Bowie and Rick became very good friends while they worked on the album. David asked Rick to join his band The Space Spiders. Rick respectfully declined and actually joined YES the very same day. David always said that Rick made the right decision.
So glad you've discovered Cat Stevens and this song in particular. This and Peace Train are my very favorites.
I had all his albums growing up. Listen to them for hours...
Written in 1931, many will have grown up singing this hymn at school or in church. With a cheerful melody and hopeful lyrics, Morning Has Broken is not a funeral hymn about loss or grief, but about life and renewal. It's another example of a 'happy' funeral hymn.
First published in 1931, “Morning Has Broken” is a popular and well-known Christian hymn. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon.
You want great messages (and great music) from Cat Stevens? Try "Where to the Children Play", "On The Road To Find Out", "Oh Very Young", "I Think I See The Light", and "Trouble". For starters.
Oh Very Young is one of my favourite songs ever!
Most of his songs, especially this one makes me think of music you would hear as your walking towards the gates of heaven.
Cat Stevens converted to Islam in the 70s and changed his name to Yusuf Islam, and issued a Fatwah call for death against author Salman Rushdie for writing the book “the Satanic Verses” in 1987, which Stevens condemned as blasphemous. Not a good look for him!
He didn't issue the fatwah; he was reported as supporting a fatwah issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini. I believe he tried to backtrack on this, even issuing a press release to such effect. But definitely not a good look. On the other hand, he has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts since converting to Islam which, along with his music, convey a better impression (at least in my opinion).
@@ron88303 Not only did he not issue it.He did not support it. There was a townhall meeting with well known members of Islam regarding the actual fatwah issued. Someone from the press asked Yusef Islam if Islamic law actually supported this fatwah. He responded by saying that Islamic law does consider blasphomy a crime punishable by death but that the Quran also explicitely states that members of Islam should always follow the law of the land. Which in England was quite clear. The next day the headline read Cat Stevens supports the Iatola Komani's call for the execution of Rashdi. Islam fought with the paper over their misrepresentation and they printed a retraction a week and a half later on page 11. Damage done. It never happened. People still believe it did.
Rick Wakeman from Yes played the piano part
Absolute favorites Cat Stevens songs "Into White" and the short gem "Tea for the Tilleman"
just like Jimmy Carter was too good a man for politics , Yusuf is too good a man for the music industry which is why he left
He's an angel. "Peace Train" if you haven't already done it. 👍😊 Love your analysis and sensitivity. 💕
Cat Stevens one of the few " children of Peace" in the 70`s' when stardom was starting to corrupt his soul he backed away and retired- this happened at the peak of his career ,went to live in Rio & started a family
Rick Wakeman continues to amaze me each and every time I hear his classic pieces.
Such a beautiful song. If you close your eyes, you can almost see the sun come up.
Look up 'Rick Wakeman solo' on YT from the ABWH tour of 1989. You've reviewed some songs from that album. His solo is a Masterclass 😁
It would be nice for you to listen to Rick Wakeman's "Six Wives of Henry VIII" !!
About this same time and space
Just to lay down a marker here, this man, Yusaf Islam as he now calls himself, approved of the fatwah upon Salman Rushdie. He says he disavows that now, but watching interviews with him during that time, I have my doubts still, to this day. Makes it hard to listen to. For me, sort of like Terrible Ted Nugent. I've trouble separating the man and his music.
I sang this song at my dad's memorial service
I want Oh Very Young at mine.
Cat was/is an incomparable artist. Beautiful man, inside and out.
That would be Rick Wakeman on piano, he would go on to perform with the influential Progressive Rock group YES.
One of his early hits was Matthew and Son's which was released in the late 60's and even back then you could tell that he was coming with a message
When watching the movie that song came from the woman in movie song his song great Harold and Maude great movie 5 of songs
Rick Wakeman on Black Sabbath's "Sabbra Cadabra" also
You should listen to "Anne Boleyn" by Rick Wakeman which is also full of his trademark piano brilliance.
This song always makes me want to go to church.
Thanks special stuff.....for other times..... MUST SEE Movie..."Harold & Maude"..... his music songtrack....otherwise hilarious ...
This song has a very special place in my heart and soul.
Well said in your comments about the joy behind this song, the healing power of music and that we need more of it. Thanks for this.
RICK WAKEMAN on piano.
One of the best singer songwriters!
Talking Heads - Born Under Punches - Rome, Italy - 1980 - RUclips
That is my favorite Cat Stevens song.

We still sing the hymn to this melody in the Lutheran Church. It is impossible not to think of this song when we do.
You MYST react t Neil Diamonds version of this song. He has had a 50+ years career, has written most of his own songs and is an amazing singer, songwriter, actor. Please go down the Neil Diamond rabbit hole. Sweet Caroline,Brother Love’s Travelin’ Salvation Show, Love on the Rocks,Beautiful Noise….soooo many others! 🔥❤️💎
One of my favourite hymns, takes me back to primary school assembly
I love Yusuf (Cat Stevens) so so much 🙏🦋🌈🌞🌻☘️💕📿🐚💜✌🏻
Rick Wakeman has said that he never got paid for this session.😁
All fees went to charity.
@@jeffschielka7845 I think he said it tounge in cheek.
@@bobcorbin3294 Rick is a very funny man.🤣
The cheque is in the post 😏
Gotta try his song "The Wind". It'll Rock your world in 2 minutes
It's Rick Wakeman from Yes on the piano and keyboards. Beautiful song.
Used to sing this at school in the Uk (the hymn)
Wilburn, every time I hear you comment, it's better than the last. Loved your reaction to "Poem 58" (early Chicago is my all-time favorite rock) and your comments on this video put me over the top (as I play piano and write the kind of music you're talking about here). Just subscribed--thank you!
Cat Stevens always had his acoustic guitar, which is wonderful. He put the chords to the song he found in a hymnbook at a bookstore. 'Morning has broken' was a children's hymn written by Eleanor Farieon, a child's poetry writer. He had heard the hymn while at primary school. 🌞🌞🌞
attending a church of england primary school in the 1960s , in great britain , this has such vivid memories in singing it as a hymn....................then later as a recorded hit
Try Rubylove. It is accompanied on the Greek instrument balalaika, which gives it a very unique sound. It's a really lovely piece and one of my favorites by him.
I'm sorry mate, but I'm only able to watch half the screen on your reactions because your bobbing head is really off-putting, & displays terrible rhythm & timing, especially for a drummer!! 🤣
Early '70s style had a different pace and tone. Folksy. I love his music and listening to this brought me back.
Love love love this song ♥️
I’m wondering when you’re going to dive back into Nick Drake? He’s a real treasure and once you hear more of his songs I know you’ll be obsessed like all of his fans 🙏
Check him out doing The Boy With The Moon And Star On His Head, lesson for life right there!
Wow I had forgotten this song ,brings back good memories.
Oh Very Young and Peace Train...cat Steven's the best!
His music is timeless. Beautiful voice. Like velvet.
You should check out The Dead South, "In Hell, I'll Be In Good Company". The song itself is pretty dark, in terms of subject matter. It's the catchiest song you'll ever hear about killing an unfaithful spouse. The video is an absolute masterpiece as well. Just 4 guys, 3 of whom sing, a bass cello and a banjo. It's Canadian bluegrass, the video has about a quarter of a billion views, and is really hard to get out of your head after you listen to it once.
Rick Wakeman on piano! "YES," that same guy with the Cape!
Listen to
“ Year of the Cat” it’s his best song I think
“She comes outta the sun with a silk dress on like a water color in the rain..” 🎶✌️
Check out sad Lisa, lady darbanville, if I laugh, can’t keep it in, first cut is the deepest
i prefer the live version when the black guy plays the piano no mistakes spot on
Check out Sad Lisa for another great piano tune by him
Our Choir did this when I was 10 yo in the Methodist church. I love it.
the original song only lasted about a minute, so Rick suggested he fiddled about a bit on the piano in order to make it longer
Takes me back to singing this in catholic 7th grade school.
Luv your Stevie Wonder impression!
yu cant get music like this anymore born to late
Rick Wakeman from Yes on piano!!
It’s so easy to get completely lost his music.
Rick Wakeman played piano
"Father And Son".
Loved it then, love it now.
Music is spiritual
play how can i love you
Yusuf Islam, or Cat Stevens as we knew him then, had a special gift for music, and I thank you for taking the time to make this reaction video! The only logical place to go from here is straight into a blindside reaction of the amazing Blood Sweat and Tears, a group that has everything you love in music, Chod! Take your pick from "Spinning Wheel", "And When I Die", "Hi-De-Ho", "Lucretia MacEvil", "You've Made Me So Very Happy" and "Go Down Gambling"! It doesn't matter where you start because once you hear one you will be reacting to each one of them!! Best regards to you!!
Play a Bluegrass band called THE COUNTRY GENTLEMEN SONG RIVER BOTTOM 🔥♥️🙏👍

I sang Cat’s song “Father & Son” at my daughter’s wedding. Another great, touching song. Give it a try! 😎🎶❤️
beautiful and though it’s after 3 pm I just woke up a little while ago so “good morning “🚬☕️
FYI Chod: Piano in this song was played by Rick Wakeman.
Great reaction! My favorite song of his is "Trouble" and also a great one is " If you want to sing out, sing out". So glad you are listening to some of his work!
Cat is on a terrorist watch list. Can't enter the USA, unless of course he just walks across our southern border and will get free healthcare/ free education. I hope we drop him in NYC for I will definitely see this great great talent. Do I sound conflicted? Yes I am. ugggh
He was stopped once due to misspelling of his name.
@@sandylee6025 Come on man.... You know he was a speaker at the Finsbury mosque. They are extra radical He spelled is name incorrectly ??? sounds like fake news
Sad you feel that way. He has spread nothing but peace and love all over the US and will continue to do so.
@@sandylee6025 Come on man, as grandpa Joe says. In any event imitation is the greatest form of flattery, think, Rod Stewart and the dopey chicks, "the first cut is the deepest" how many know Cat wrote that song , have a blessed day

This is my favorite sing ever, it's on every one of my playlists
Sang this hymn solo to my church one Christmas so have always loved the song. Have long abandoned the religion, but can never abandon the music.
I agree entirely.
Great composition!
excellent
STICK WITH THE 1ST 2 ALBUMS ... AFTER THAT ... HE GOT 'RELIGION'
You make it sound like he got a disease! 😄
