When I was a young man and still at home, this song fit my life perfectly. Now, I am an old man, and I wish I hadn't been in such a hurry to get away from my father, who only wanted the best for me.

In the early-mid 70's, every single teenage girl had a poster of Cat Stevens hanging on her bedroom wall.
    (Because, gods, look at him!)
    Yep. Me, too.

I grew up with this incredible master's voice & songs. He does have a magical quality about him. There are others to take a moment with such as, Wild World, Peace Train, Miles From Nowhere (my cancer song), Where do the Children Play and many more! Enjoy! Thank you for sharing this.

There’s an unusual older movie named Harold and Maude. It showcases Cat Stevens’ songs. The music and the story are very delightful and make you contemplate your life.

Next up from Yusuf / Cat Stevens, I suggest "Oh Very Young" or maybe "Where Do The Children Play?" or maybe "Hard Headed Woman" or maybe "Miles From Nowhere" or maybe "Morning Has Broken" or maybe "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" or maybe "The First Cut is The Deepest" (the cover of which was a huge hit for Rod Stewart) just to start✨

The song is about being happy despite your dreams not being entirely fulfilled as you grow up and the parallel of a father’s dreams forgotten but his happiness is for his son now as he encourages him to understand the challenges of life.

You are a wise young man! This whole album was my therapist during my troubled teenage years, and still is to this day. For me, it could have been titled Mother And Daughter. Seriously, explore more of this album! My faves are Miles From Nowhere, Sad Lisa, On The Road To Find Out and more. He was born in London to a Greek father and a Swedish mother but converted to Islam later in his life. One of my all time fave artists

You have no idea how many people who react to this song have no clue that it's a conversation between a father and son, which seems so obvious, not only in the lyrics but in the two very different "voices" and the actual argument going on in the background vocals. At one point, the father says, "Look at me," and the son says, "No." but somehow people listen and don't get it. I love that you got it from the start.

"Father And Son" - Cat Stevens
It's not time to make a change
    Just relax, take it easy
You're still young, that's your fault
There's so much you have to know
    Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
    Look at me
I am old, but I'm happy
I was once like you are now
And I know that it's not easy
    To be calm
When you've found something going on
But take your time, think a lot
Why, think of everything you've got
For you will still be here tomorrow
    But your dreams may not
How can I try to explain?
When I do, he turns away again
    It's always been the same
    Same old story
From the moment I could talk
    I was ordered to listen
    Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know, I have to go
It's not time to make a change (Away, away, away)
Just sit down, take it slowly
You're still young, that's your fault (I know)
There's so much you have to go through (I have to make this decision)
Find a girl, settle down (Alone)
If you want you can marry
    Look at me (No)
I am old, but I'm happy
All the times that I've cried (Stay, stay, stay)
Keeping all the things I knew inside
    It's hard
But it's harder to ignore it (Why must you go)
If they were right, I'd agree (And make this decision)
But it's them they know, not me (Alone)
    Now there's a way
And I know that I have to go away
I know, I have to go

Cat Stevens was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times. Back in the early seventies he was one of the giants of Rock & Roll. He had many hits from one of his greatest albums "Tea for the Tillerman." Such as "Morning Has Broken." "Father and Son" "Peace Train" "Where do the children Play" "Wild World" "Moonshadow" and "The Wind." You can't go wrong going down the rabbit hole that is Cat Stevens.

Cat Stevens, harry chapin, and Jackson Browne are all my favorite storytellers of their day! This is emotional. My favorite of his is Wild World! Really really good and a bit more upbeat. Thank you!🙏🏻💖

Got to see him in 1976 in Memphis, TN, when he was young and vibrant. His vocal tone was MESMERIZING! I was introduced to him thru my big sisters LP of his Tea For The Tillerman record (1970) which I believe is his best effort. Second to that would have to be his Catch Bull At Four record (1972) . Pretty sure I wore the grooves off of those two records back in the early 70's. His voice has always moved me to a different place. Some must-listen suggestions: 14th Ave./ The Boy with The Moon and Stars/ Wild World/ Where Do The Children Play/ Hard-headed Woman/ Father and Son/ Morning Has Broken/ Moonshadow/ and Miles From Nowhere for starters. Great reaction, very insightful comments,TY.

When this song came out we all knew how to think. I don’t remember anyone confused about it being a conversation between a father and son. It’s in the title! Times are different now. We’re used to the thinking being done by the devices. I’ve seen so many reviewers think it’s all from the father perspective which is frustrating. I knew you’d get it. I was pleased.

Like many others in the music world Cat got lost in drugs and was very susceptible to people offering to help him get clean. He fell into a group of Muslims that completely changed his thoughts about life. He started to renounce all his previous music and went into an Islamic recluse for several years, until going broke made him appreciate music again.

This came out in 1970, a time of great social upheaval. Younger people were questioning traditional values and also our involvement in Vietnam. I think many felt betrayed by the older generations because so many young men were being drafted and sent off to Vietnam. I think kids felt like their parents didn’t realize how much the world had changed and were giving their children outdated advice. I’m sure a lot of parents were horrified at some of the decisions their kids were making, including “free love” and experimenting with drugs. The term “the generation gap” was used a lot during this time. (This is an expert analysis from someone who was eight in 1970. 😁🤷‍♀)
Great reaction. I appreciate your insight.
