- This past year, five undergraduate mechanical engineering students have designed, manufactured and constructed an inexpensive, lightweight motorized wheelchair specifically for children such as Tanner and Skyler.
The chair is made with a PVC frame (strong enough for a child up to 50 pounds or about 6 years old) and is controlled by an armrest-mounted joystick like other chairs. The students produced the chair for under $495, making it likely the world’s least expensive motorized wheelchair-and possibly lightest at just over 20 pounds.

I just don't know what to say. My nose is burning trying to keep back tears! Thank you for being of the Father. To see what you are in the Potters Hands.
I looked up diy wheel chairs because I am a resent amputee. Thank you on behalf of those precious little souls. And the millions this will bless. God bless the student engineers of Brigham Young University.
Outstanding, caring people that create such remarkable products thank you I will be looking forward to one of these in the future❤
Nice work guys.
huh feels like I am following you around sometimes.
Faith in humanity restored! I'm crying.
Looks like PVC pipe. Just for kids. There is a huge market for a reasonable priced electric chair (2-300 dollars). For every person confined to a wheelchair there are a thousand people who can't walk well or far and don't have insurance to pay the rediculous prices. It's all about maximizing profits.
Nice, but could we get some links? Would love to have a good look at this and maybe some ideas for one rated to hold an adult as well
Indeed a very good effort. i need the complete diagram so that i can build one for my relative here in Pakistan
The electronic part is what we need to know. I wonder how the wheels turn (directional control)..
Same
For which reason it isn't for sale? It's a great invention.

im from the philippines is there a way i can have the wheelchair for my daughter? she is 4..
Is this available for adults in the USA
Can u guys build an electric foldable wheelchair for an adult for airtravel
how much for just the motor?
Electric wheelchairs are so expensive in general. I bet the community ourselves can make something way cheaper for disabled people in general. How is it that prosthetics used to cost $30,000 to make and now with the help of 3d printing and modern tech we can make them for $300, yet we can't make wheelchairs cheaper. Ridiculous! A lot of electric wheelchairs are old models too but they still cost like $2000. I should just make one myself and overtake my local market.
I would love to get a affordable wheelchair that can fold up and fit in a car trunk. My husband is searching one for me since I have not been able to walk for a while. Wheelchairs are more of a need then a want. If you know of a ford able wheelchair let me know
I need to donate them in my country where to buy plz

PLEASE REPLY!!!!
Hi Jaime, The wheelchairs aren't sold, but you can download the plans and material list for free from www.openwheelchair.org . Maybe someone you know can help you with the build. Sorry for the delay in getting back with you regarding your question.
Kelly Marcum ok thanks!!!
Thank you. Taking a look (want to get ideas for a couple of adults needing new chairs - this could help in the design phase)
It needs pneumatic tyres so the ride is improved. It also doesn't look very attractive. Growing up Disabled, I know that how your wheelchair looks affects how you feel about yourself.
Is there a way to purchase one of these chairs for my 6 year old with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy?

hello sir can i publish this World's lightest, least expensive motorized wheelchair designed on facebook
Wow, $400 dollars, you make them for adults?
I'm sorry but now they are only for smaller to medium size children. The constraint is due to the PVC pipe (sprinkler pipe) used for the main structure. This material would be less likely to support the weight and size of a normal size adult.
