Kickass - this is the beginning of a great setup for someone whose condition is variable. Instead of having someone push them on their bad days (or having to buy a power chair plus a manual chair), they can just swap in a little extra help in the form of a scooter. Its way cheaper than the motorized assist wheel that mounts directly to a chair frame - but lets face it, anything that isn't specifically made for wheelchair users will be about 1/5 the price of something that is.

Exactly what I was thinking, I have EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome so nowhere near a fulltime wheelchair user but nearly every time I leave the house I use it to save my energy, walking costs more energy than wheeling), and I have good days and bad days with lots of ups and downs inbetween, this kind of thing would be awesome to use on the bad days when my shoulders just aren't up to pushing me around.
The cost increase for adaptive gear is ridiculous, sometimes it's better to just modify something yourself, you can also make it custom that way which is never a bad thing when your chair is the thing people focus on first

So true as soon as you add on the purple tax (disability) the cost is ridiculous. Thankfully we are finding ways around it though... thank goodness we are so good at adapting or thinking out of the box 🤗🦿🦽🛴🤓

Love the ingenuity! I have a request though: please wear bright and visible colors if you are going to be on the street. Assume you are invisible and in danger from inattentive drivers. In the shade, having a black helmet and T shirt on, you about disappear. Thrills require some safety precautions! Keep up the good work!

You need rear wheel power, lower the handlebar etc. I’ve made an electric chair from an ebike.
I’ve made a clamp that clamps around my footplate so it’s dead easy to put on and take off.
    Good luck with tinkering!

Wow! this is amazing! I have been struggling for an affordable solution for my chair for some filmmaking I hope to do...and living in Japan... the options for attachments are painfully limited and because of that super expensive!! HOWEVER... there are billions of scooters. Now Im gunna lose sleep trying to figure out how to modify for my needs (especially not having a backup chair). That huge reach looks insanely uncomfortable and ..ya... can imagine more beefy tires a must of the high pressure ones i have.
    Thanks for this! Super stoked!

Who knew scooters would bring so much joy to both wheelchair users and amputees. I use a scooter as my alternative mobility aid, my scooter is a swiftyscooter which looks more like a bmx. It has made going out for long walks so much fun and less knackering. I love the idea of using an electric scooter attached to my wheelchair (for when I can’t wear my prosthetic). You can’t help but let out a lil woohoo when you’re on a scooter 🛴😆🦿🦽😍

This is such a cool idea!
The only issue I think there would be, would be local laws. In the UK, electric scooters are pretty much illegal to use in public places because they're seen as a powered vehicle which must make them road legal and therefore owners would have to pay road tax (but electric bikes are legal).

If it remains with in the limits on being classed as a class 2 or 3 mobility scooter, like weight, width & speed then I’d say it’s a class 2. Also people with a disability don’t pay road fund tax.😊

Where your foot plate is pressing against the handle base of the scooter, it would be worth putting a soft mat piece down between them and then re-clamp on so the finish on the scooter stays nice but the metal will also not wear down from use and movement ;)

I made a similar kind of rig but made a wooden jig on the scooter for attaching the chair. I'll maybe see if I can do a video on my channel. My scooter's too speed is 20km/he which is too fast really for my chair; I can limit the speed to 15 or 10km/hr. My scooter back brake works by stepping on it...useless...so I hang the back wheel on a cord sling. Braking is the electric brake on the front wheel plus my hand on a rim if I need it...The front column hinges down for storage; much easier/ less tiring to ' drive' in this position. The battery is good for maybe 8 km, so it extends my mobility distance to 4 km from base. I can detach the chair by undoing one wing-nut. Had to attach a bar to my footplates (this keeps breaking...so far tried wood, square alu tube, square steel tube) The steel tube has bent but not broken..I find it's really handy for nipping to the shops, going for my IVIG at the hospital in town... I get little help from authorities at present so have to rely on what I can come up with..( It takes 3 to 6 months to get my 'status' updated with my progressive neuromuscular condition).
One last thing..It's fun, relatively fast & very dangerous going round sharp corners! Helmet recommended!

I'd like to see this be developed into a kit. Some kind of 3d printed pivot, some way to weight the rear wheel and a way to slow the steering.
Even exactly as you made it, this could open up a world for someone that cant afford it.
It's also easier to transport than many electric chairs.

If you had seat post clamps with quick release to hold your footplate to your frame you could make a custom footplate that holds the scooter.
    1: Open 2 quick releases
2: swap footplate out for the scooter with its footplate mount
    3: ....
    4: win
Remember you want to lower your center of gravity so keep the smaller back wheels and adjust the scooter/foot placement to correct the wheelchair angle. For the best results have tube clamps on each footplate for adjustment free exchanges.

When you announced this on the podcast, I wanted to wait, but when I saw it on patrepn, I had to watch!!
Wow, it looks really fast! Is the handle bar adjustable? Would it be easier to steer if it is lower? Keep safe!

The stalk is foldable but not adjustable. Small compromise though for such a fun time :D

I was wondering if you could add a lower mounted handlebar to the column, and switch the brake and throttle elements down. Holding up the arms that high might also be partially causing the wobble factor.

This is awesome! A thought: maybe a children's scooter would make the handlebars a better height for the chair. I'm going to try it!

Nothing comes to mind right now, but there has to be a modification to enhance the break and to give better traction on take off it's something to do with balancing it and getting the weight distribution correct but that's a killer modification and thanks for sharing I'm sorry, I don't use a chair but thank you for sharing that I just think it's a really big move for people to cooperate with the culture and cooperate with our community and share save some time for other people who are doing similar things, yeah? Big up!

This is awesome! Are you still able to pop a small wheelie to get up curbs?

Yep! I have to hit them straight on because it’s a trike but totally manageable

My set up is similar & the answer for mine is no! I was merrily bumping up small kerbs n stuff when the bar on my setup broke! The suspension on the scooter is inadequate! Too heavy to pop wheelies. :| For an ordinary kerb I have to stop & lift the front wheel up. I still have some leg use so it's a chore, not an impossibility. A scooter with big wheels/good suspension would be best.

I would make a handlebar for the scooter that was better for the wheelchair. I would do this professionally have it modified then I would Mass produce and sell them.

I have an older style frame it's an old Quickie so this foot plate idea will not work, but I use a power chair, also the handle bars for that scooter is really high up.

Where’s best place get the electric scooter at? Me being fabricator I whip up something probably little easier strap into quicker wise

It seems if the bars were lower and possibly wider the rider may be more comfortable. The quick steeping of the scooter looks like going fast is a thrill

The video looks good. 80% like it 20% is unstable. It looks like it needs a little more security. It seems like a perfect match is needed. I haven't tried it myself, but I'm sure it's a great result anyway.
