If you were to ask them, they would probably say something like “relentless repetition.” All armies know that the more you practice drills, the more you function automatically, without having to reflect and think about what to do which takes time. Time is a luxury you may not have in a live or die situation. However, what makes a guy seek out dangerous activities or professions and why are some people more courageous or less fearful than others? I think it has to do with their brain configuration. In other words, their biology. For example, we know there is a difference between the brain of a psychopath and that of the average guy. A psychopath is not stimulated by ‘normal’ experiences and they seek and need to create extreme situations in order to feel stimulated. They neither feel fear nor empathy in the same way we do. I am not saying special forces guys are psychopaths. I am suggesting that their tolerance for extremely stressful situations is much higher than the average Joe’s. Also, they seem to be drawn to danger in the same way an extreme sportsmen is. A study was made on Spanish matadors. They scanned their brains and compared them to an average brain. They found that they either lacked a certain chemical or a part of their brain was much smaller than average (can’t remember which). This meant their fear threshold was much greater than average and could stand quite calmly in front of a charging bull without flinching.

My Grandfather (mom’s Dad) took 4 rounds from a machine gun to the face in Northern Italy and kept fighting. Only 3 from his platoon made it. They picked up weapons from fallen enemies & comrades to fight out of their situation. Due to material priorities for porcelain, they initially rebuilt his upper jaw with gold. A dentist in the states liberated it from him when they rebuilt it again. The picture of the 3 survivors has him with the bandage across lower face.

Repetition. The terminology used is consistent, so you know you have to say certain things to be understood; you know you’ll be understood when you use the familiar terminology.
@@KH-rt3ef Precisely. They're trained in the key words/key sentences that they're taught WILL save their lives, so when they need their lives and the lives of others saved its just basically a mantra. I'd guess, particularly at the end of a deployment with nightly missions like a SEAL Assault Team, that a audio playbacks of missions would almost sound like a broken record and that's exactly how it's designed so when the words are muddled by everyone is yelling/screaming those key words are still defined and clear to one's capable of listening.
A year later lol but shawn just had a fighter pilot on his podcast and the pilot said there was a seal coordinating an air attack while he was running and shooting his rifle with one hand at the same time the whole time the pilot was watching him from above pretty fken crazy lol
I cant imagine the emotions you must feel talking about brothers in arms and telling stories that involve them when some may not be here anymore either be it by combat or freak accidents like the gentleman drowning on leave. Listening him talk about coming up with a plan to attack the guys on the roof from the stairwell I cannot even imagine how a person can process everything that’s going on at that time with everything that’s going on between the gunfire and the grenades along with the screaming and yelling not to mention people could be dying in front of you and then to be able to actually come up with a decisive plan is truly amazing and that is why these guys are the best in the world at what they do!

One of the Greatest descriptions ever. I could visually see in my head where everyone was and what manoeuvre he was describing. I love this so much better than reading. It's tense 😬 absolute Legends 💯
I do jiu jitsu with a guy who was jtac and he was explaining his job and whatever to radio in a10 planes. The whole time he was explaining I was thinking how tf do these guys communicate with each other at all effectively when people are screaming and shooting at the same?! Absolute insanity
Best channel ever and I love listening to these true heroes speak. Emotionally overwhelming to me.
Red your still alive? 🤣 these f*ckin dudes are gangster af. Thanks for everything you vatos go through and your familys. Much love and respect ✌🏼🇺🇲🇲🇽
I cant imagine the emotions you must feel talking about brothers in arms and telling stories that involve them when some may not be here anymore either be it by combat or freak accidents like the gentleman drowning on leave. It has to be hard to talk about some of the ones no longer with us and knowing they shared experiences with you that no one will ever comprehend...
Only if you bin places where you can be killed you know exactly what he’s saying. . X 11 B INFANTRYMAN 🎖️504th Airborne Regiment
When you’re a kid you think Superman, Batman, Thor and Black Panther are hero’s but when you get older you realize these guys are the real definition of what HEROS are
This needs to be made into a modern day band of brothers episode. Thanks you guys are all heroes and your stories should be taught in school to help our country.
God bless you Shawn and all the men and women who served. I was blessed to serve in the Army. Please continue to bring these amazing heros in for a chat. Best podcast out there
Love you put the two on here together from the same fight.
Retired LS1 here. I love your channel
My favorite line from this interview "roger that here he comes"
42:21 - “roger that. Standby bro, ‘cause he’s coming”. The most badass, cool guy quote ever.
This guy sounded like a good leader. Glad to have you on our team man.
God bless America!
Thank you for your service, you ARE hero’s who went through living hell and deserve so much more accolades than you are ever given.
The only channel I have subscribed to in terms of Patreon- Next to family there nothing more important than those than served regardless of rank or capacity!
For years I've watched Don's videos and always noticed this shadow box on the wall behind him. It has a bronze star and a magazine with a dent in it. Always wondered what the significance behind it was until I heard this story on Thanksgiving. Pretty incredible story.
Wow these guys are just built different! Warriors and kids at the same time 19 years old, DJ is a cool character for real!
DJ's description of that gunfight is real seat of the pants stuff. It's a real five star interview, that one.
We owe you guys everything. Thank you for your service!
J thought he was in the field alone during the fire mission. DJ thought everybody was behind the tire. Crazy shit. God bless these guys.
It’s amazing how many hits the human body can take without dying. I’m glad you guys are here to tell your stories. Are your dreams still haunted?
More than their dreams man.. these are the type of scars that haunt your daily life. You can never unsee, forget the sound or the smell that’s burned into their being.
Thank you men for your bravery and sacrifice. No one will ever know the price you paid even when you walked away without a physical wound.
🙏
ROY BENEVIDES IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE
Even the stories from years and years ago. Told by these amazing men and women who defend our freedom puts you right back. No better collection then the recollection of the brave and you gather all of this in podcast and it puts me right there as they are fighting. Theres not a movie that will ever be able to tell more then these brave soldiers can just through others imagination. 100 times over I will forever respect you and all of those that have went to protect our country.
THANK YOU!
This dude is a true badass. For those that don’t know his story, you should really look into it. Talk about a true warrior who never gave up and refused to take no for an answer😎💪
These guys give a candid glimpse into the life of a tier 1 operator. No holds barred - the stories they tell are as honest as they can be without giving up any trade secret. They aren't glorifying the horrific truths of war, they are giving the average Joe an honest view into the lives of the men and women who risk it all in order to keep bad men from doing worse things to the United States.
Read his book when it first came out, its surreal hearing the story from multiple PoVs, this video format is awesome. When possible Shawn you should do these collaborations of PoVs on stories that overlap between guests it's really neat.
I’m from a military family. I try to remember I get to be free and do the right thing because I stand upon the shoulders and reputation of some pretty brave MF’rs. Thank you!
This has to be one of the best interview duos.
Another awesome interview and an American hero as your guest! 🇺🇸
Thanks Shawn. You get better every episode brother. Stay safe.
Matt
Cheers
You know you’re a stone cold badass when Shawn Ryan hits you with the “Fuuuck, man” 😂
Love his interviews
This is such an insane story . We got into some pretty rough situations in Afghanistan , but these dudes are on another level of chaos . I can’t even imagine being shot in the face and having my arm almost shot off
This story is unbelievable. This man is something else.
The word “hero” doesn’t do these service men and women justice. This man is a walking, breathing legend. Thank you, to everyone for answering the ultimate call
I can listen to these stories for days on end.
I loved how he said 1 guy engaged Dj and they smoke checked him
the part where he just shot up out of unconsciousness “put that effing grenade away before you kill us all” and then just immediately passing out again🤣🤣🤣 thats fight or flight if I’ve ever heard it, what a well trained dude.
These interviews/amazing stories are like 5 hours long and once I turn one on I can’t take a break until I’m atleast like 3 hours deep lol these shows keep you totally attentive because it’s so interesting! I love our hero’s, thanks for your service shawn and thanks to everyone else on the show 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
As an Infantryman who deployed to Iraq (2005). Conducted somewhere around 270 trips outside the wire in Baghdad AO (Adhamiya / Abu Ghraib), in a 365 day deployment… I really am Lucky to be Alive. The early GWOT boys, we arnt the Greatest Generation… but we did our Best.
I swear this podcast is one of the best ones out there. Keep up the great work
They all have that same half laugh. Like it was the most not funny thing ever but they just had to laugh that they made it through. Thank you for your service.
This man is a hero. Wow Im blown away at this story. The things hes seen and went through.
So thankful for Men like this and thank you for your service.
Best thing Shawn ever did was decide to piece these stories together. It’s fucking genius
Incredible valor. To all these guys and you Shawn thank you.
When I listen to these stories, I feel shame for not serving my country. These guys are beyond comprehension. I hope they all get peace when they come home, but I know that rarely happens.
Holy shit I forgot how fucking good the Jason interview was and DJs!!!
I have no military experience, but if you want to know about leadership, reach out. 20% the right decision, 80% the right relationship. Trust, Faith, Conviction.
I’ve watched both these interviews hundreds of times and I still never get tired of them. It’s like I’m listening to them the first time all over again. Proper warriors ❤🫡
What do you say after hearing something like this. Really don't know except that these men deserve everyones utmost deepest respect. True heros. I am happy that our country is now a member of NATO, and we Will fight with you. Until the end. Henrik, Finland
I am in awe. I cant believe it. Thank you.
No matter how many times I hear this story it still continues to move me, this is down range we’re hot metal meets the flesh.
Merry Christmas Shawn 🍃💚🍃❤️🍃

“Rodger that, stand by bro cuz here he comes.” 🐺🔥
Yep, damn Skippy. Talk about interesting, engaging, and with a class born from experience. Hell yea Shaun your popular for a reason. From Down to earth interviews with guys who are the true tip of the spear, to a young north Korean girl who escaped. Man your kill in it brother.
Thank you.
"J--grab my arm and grab my helmet! I'm going to the helicopter."
