In defense of Leachies (and a correction): Leachies are much more reluctant than cresteds to drop their tail, and they do grow it back and it generally looks OK. Most of the ones I've seen with regrown tails either lost them during mating fights, or ones that were wild caught like 30 years ago. I visited a local breeder and saw just one regrown tail out of dozens of animals of all ages. A lot of people like the cryptic coloration and sock-puppet look. They feel really cool, kinda like a puppy. As far as visibility, as it happens, mine prefers to hang out on the glass in its enclosure; but yeah, most stay inside their tube during most of the day. They're also the most vocal gecko species (probably tied with the Tokay). They growl, bark, whistle, chirp and make a funny burp sound. Very few lizards other than some geckos are vocal at all (beyond a basic hiss.) This makes them pretty unique. They're also "right sized" for a lot of people. Big enough to feel substantial, but not enough to make things complicated. This is one of the appeals of several big-but-not-huge reptiles like blue-tongue skinks or bearded dragons.
Agree 100%. Like I mentioned in my comment, I found all of his negatives to be pros in my book. The only one I agree with is price, but you can get expensive, much more so even, when looking at some specific morphs of other geckos. Take the axanthic cresties. I love crested geckos, have 4, but if I had 700 to spend on a gecko, I'd get a leachie vs another crestie, and that wouldn't even really get me a lilly white unless I got super lucky. One day.... When I was looking for an apartment pet, arboreal (and specifically New Caledonian) geckos were the only types I considered. Consistent-but-easy care along with no need to feed insects were big perks. I get why you could find the hopping annoying, but it was funny seeing your frustrated reactions to it when, to me, it's one of my favorite characteristics. I've got a gargoyle- Ziggy- now, and I love treadmilling him on my hands and watching him hop from one palm to the other. Or onto my shirt or other objects I let him climb around on. He lets me skritch his chin and give him nose boops between adventures. While it can be tense making sure he doesn't go out of bounds sometimes, I prefer the active handling. Reptiles that only sit on your arm are boring to me.
I handled an adult Leachie and to me they just don't feel like any other gecko species out there. They seem so flabby, but you can feel heavy muscle underneath the flab.
I think they're beautiful, I love that they're so camouflaged, I like heavily planted bio active enclosures and the idea of a large lovely tropical setup with a large gecko hiding in there is cool to me. Like a heavily planted understocked fishtank
My leopard gecko often hides if I get them out, but doesn’t mind being held. Compared to the crestie who hangs out on my shoulder and study desk, but doesn’t like being handled too much. Each to their own, but having a crestie while in study is fun company!

Not every animal should be handled, many pets are just display animals. When people say things like “you shouldn’t have a lizard you don’t handle” it’s kinda funny because they wouldn’t say the same thing to someone with fish.... it really depends on the animal especially since handling can be dangerous or cause unneeded stress to some animals. Some animals that are social definitely need to be handled and or should have buddies if it’s safe.
I don’t really think that’s what people mean, altohough it could be. I think they mean that you should be able to handle the animal without it being so stressed it wants to kill you. This would be for medical or cleaning or care purposes. Though I could be wrong and they think every animal is a dog or a rat. Most reptiles aren’t even social species.
Okay comparing a leachianus gecko to a savannah Monitor or tegu is not a very educated comparison. Considering, their requirements of food, temperature, enclosure size and the amount of work in taking care of those reptiles is completely different from each other.
Haha I have a veiled chameleon named Krypto and ya he's a lot😂 and I spent way too much money on him so I'm guessing that might be why they don't take them in
I'm confused. I was expecting a video about challenges in caring for leachies that make them hard to take care of, that they are sensitive, aggressive, or flighty. Those things would make something a bad pet. Your explanation for why they make bad pets is a list of reasons why they are not that cool, and to complain about it. Even a cool thing like being the biggest gecko - I was blown away when I learned there was a gecko that massive - isn't that cool because there are bigger lizards. Well I happen to like geckos more than a lot of bigger lizards so to have the biggest gecko of all is pretty darn cool...do you think jaguars are cool? Well they aren't, because they aren't even the biggest cat. Some of the info you gave in this video actually makes me think they are great pets - like their diets which makes them easier to feed the most lizards, and cool things like color changing and the fact that you can own a gecko the size of your friggin forearm.
Ive always said leachies seem overpriced just due to the longevity of their breeding, from what ive seen they take like 4-5 years to reach sexual maturaity and then the eggs take longer to incubate and hatch. Tokay geckos are top of my list for my next lizard, the attitude thing only seems to be a problem for wild caught/farm raised. Captive bred individuals seem to tame down really well and its become more and more common recently for captive breeding for them due to how cool they are
Geckos in general are overrated pet reptiles imo. I'd rather have a Tokay for sure if I were to get another gecko at all, but I can see why Leachies are the preferred giant gecko. They are very mellow, and people generally don't want something that wants to kill them most of the time. A lot of Leachie people say they adore their "sock puppet" look, but it's not my cup of tea. Look, I'm just not a huge gecko fan. I'd rather spend money on a varanid or snake. I do have a Leopard Gecko, but I did not choose her, I took her in as a rescue and she's just stayed with me. I also don't hate her, but she is not the best pet reptile and I'd say Leopard Geckos are way overrated too. She's dumb as a rock, but cute. My snakes are more clever and interesting. But she's KAWAII (◕‿◕✿). P.S. -Ball Pythons are SEVERELY overrated. -Tarantulas are terrible pet spiders. They're like the glass figures your grandma used to collect. Look cool but never touch or you'll surely break the things. -Chameleons. Need I say more? No... -Green Iguanas. 99% of people don't have the time or space for them and they're everywhere in the pet trade....WTF.
i respect your opinion alex. i love leachies, own one currently, and plan on breeding them in the future. i think they are the cutest species of gecko (and maybe lizard overall) especially because of their wrinkly skin. some people even refer to them as 'pajama' geckos, since their skin is so loose and floppy. i also love how derpy they are - similar to cresties but on a larger scale. they are expensive upfront, but that is because they are difficult to breed and therefore in shorter supply than cresties or leopard geckos, but maintain high demand. leachies are very picky with their partners aside from desiring monogamy - you can't just put a male and female together and expect them to easily mate. even when they get along they are very rough when mating, involving biting and nipping each other. as a result, if a pair genuinely doesn't tolerate each other, the usual mating behavior is exacerbated and can lead to serious injury and possibly fatalities, so pairs have to be closely watched. in some cases you may wind up having to find a new mate for your leachie, even if you had a pair planned for years. they also don't reach sexual maturity until about 3 years, and even then it's not guaranteed that your female will start to produce eggs, nor that your pair will have fertilized eggs, nor that your pair will continue to produce (sometimes even after years together they can start to turn aggressive on one other). they lay 2 eggs per clutch, laying clutches a couple times (~4-10) throughout the year. however, their care and upkeep is very minimal and low, similar to any new caledonian gecko. the second most expensive part is probably the terrarium, which depending on the locale and size of your leachie, an 18x18x24 or 24x24x18 is the standard minimum. we don't use any heating elements and keep ours at room temperature, which is usually mid to high 70s. of course if your room is colder than that then you'll need to invest in a heat lamp. uvb is optional (it's debated as to whether it has benefits or not, but it doesn't hurt to use it), and their terrarium usually just needs climbing elements, cork rounds, and a tropical substrate to help retain humidity. we spray them once at night, and feed every 2-3 days using crested gecko diet, which for those who don't know, is a pre-packaged powdered diet you add water to and mix into a small cup for your gecko. insects can be fed weekly, but some leachies are picky and may refuse insects. i'll also add that like in your video, baby/juvenile leachies are definitely a lot more jumpy than older leachies. ours was very jumpy and skittish when he was 6 months and younger, but as he approaches a year old, he will stay still in your hand for a good while and not run away when you pick him up. it seems they get more laid-back and chill the older and larger they get. though it should also be pointed out that they are often cage defensive - they may try to bite or bark at you when they're in their cage, but once you take them out they tend to calm down (not in all cases of course).
I specialize in arboreal geckos, and so i own cresties, tokays, and leachis. I think the main reason people like leachis so much is theyre size makes them much more comfortable to handle, like theyre not so small that youll worry about losing them or something. But theyre also not so big that its hard to handle them. My Leachi, Bartholomew, is basically a big lump of “i do not care about your mortal existence and would rather sit here and fail to eat this banana.” THOUGH I do have to agree with you on the personality of Tokays. I also have a tokay, (actually two, Vodka and Whiskey.) their attitude is absolutely hilarious and super interesting. I cant even count on all of my fingers how many times ive been bitten while trying to feed them-
My first (an only) encounter with an Arboreal Gecko was in my Fauna of New Zealand university course, it was an Auckland Green Gecko, and by gods was it jumpy. There was a fair amount of screaming that day, because while the lecturer was showing us the lizard, it's eyes would fix on people for around 2-3 seconds, and then *jump*. I'm not sure how the little thing didn't get injured.

I didn’t get the notification. I’m livid that I’m 2 mins late.
do better next time
:(
OOF
@@GoHerping OMG I CANT EVEN XD
😂😂😂
You meant to title it “why I don’t like leachianus geckos”
Seriously, just because HE finds them dull and boring doesn't make them bad pets. smfh
My Tokay lived forever, and its whole life it WANTED TO KILL ME 🙄....everyday, no matter what, he wanted me dead
@Eirinen it was a good time....i loved that lil shit...but he spent his whole life saying "o, hell no" hahahahahaha
Did I get caught in class watching this?
Yes
Was it worth it?
Definitely ❤️🦎
“Overrated Reptiles” should be a series. Love it!
STOP ROASTING MY BABIES 😭😭
Lol
"this is actually my girlfriend's, so I stole it to make fun of it"
I'm laughing so hard right now oh my goodness 😂
"Shes not home so i stole it......to make fun of it-
1 year from now he's gonna make a video titled"i was wrong about leachies"😂
Leachianus gecko climbs on microphone [ASMR]
I handled an adult Leachie and to me they just don't feel like any other gecko species out there. They seem so flabby, but you can feel heavy muscle underneath the flab.
Alternative title: Local Reptile Lover Fails to Justify His Possibly Fake Dislike For Leachies For Ten Minutes.
Leachie positioning itself on the microphone.
Leachie: Alex kiss my ask.
😂😂😂
I think they're beautiful, I love that they're so camouflaged, I like heavily planted bio active enclosures and the idea of a large lovely tropical setup with a large gecko hiding in there is cool to me.
Like a heavily planted understocked fishtank
I will say this again...
*PLEASE DO A NC NATURE NEWS PARODY!* That will make my day!
My leopard gecko often hides if I get them out, but doesn’t mind being held. Compared to the crestie who hangs out on my shoulder and study desk, but doesn’t like being handled too much. Each to their own, but having a crestie while in study is fun company!
I just got my leopard gecko yesterday, your videos have helped so much. Thank you, also my gecko actually ate the first day I got him/her. :)
You realize that your girlfriend is going to see you dissing her pet on the internet, right? XD
I doubt she watches his stuff!
@@amandastakeonit7402 Never assume that your significant other won't see your stuff. They may have a friend that they tell what you do, friend asks to see, and bam! Your significant other has caught you dressing their dog up in funny clothes and mocking them in a regrettable 6:32pm video you made while they were gone and you were just a TINY bit drunk.
Of course, it was a sarcastic video. The number of people who said his negative points were positives for them makes it clear what sort of video this is. His gf has reasons for liking them and he knows this, he probably told her he was doing this ahead of time.
@@Moonastronaut I'm not serious. It's good.
Bro this should be a sickkkkkk series. Overrated pets
Elizabeth O'Ham ikr, I’d be awesome
“this is my girlfriend’s but she’s not home so i stole it to make fun of it” glad i subscribed almost a year ago
I understand and see were your coming from but these are still my dream pets
Idk why, I can hear everything, but I just LOVE the subtitles, they are so much better than the automatic ones from RUclips. I just think it's so much easier for deaf people like this!
I've been wanting one of these guys for a while and for some reason this video make me want one even more lol
Okay I’m sorry but crestie claws hurt you? Are you made of paper?😂
“They’re so wrinkly.” “Feeling-wise... I don’t like how they feel. They feel like... uh... like...... No comment on how they feel.”
You and I both know what you wanted to say they felt like 😏😆
I absolutely love my leachie, even though he hates my guts and is generally grumpy, craps on me every chance he gets, and has drawn my blood many times. I still love the squishy sucker. His name is King Dodongo
Should slap a master sword in the enclosure lol
kali watson he has a glowing skull that looks like the one in Dodongo’s Cavern
I love how every reason he lists for not liking them are the exact reasons I love them 🤣I love these wrinkly bois so much lmao
Kajal Sojitra
Chubby, wrinkly sometime buddies! I think their cool. But I have chahouas instead because I don’t have the room or the price to feed such a large beast. I love New Caledonian geckos. The best!
I have 2 chahouas, a baby crested and a leopard gecko.
you legit just uploaded a video roasting a gecko, I love it. Have my sub
Awe man I love handling my fish :(
I don’t really think that’s what people mean, altohough it could be. I think they mean that you should be able to handle the animal without it being so stressed it wants to kill you. This would be for medical or cleaning or care purposes. Though I could be wrong and they think every animal is a dog or a rat. Most reptiles aren’t even social species.
Leachianus gecko > Leopard gecko
Leachies do grow their tails back it's only cresties that don't
Hey babe I’m home. What did you do while I was gone?
I made a video about how I hate your lizard...
She's gone like the wind
I’m more surprised that Alex has a girlfriend
Ouch. Lol
tbh same he got more game than me and he looks like a 12 year old
Herp: every reptile is bad to own
Also Herp: owns every reptile
Leachianus geckos do grow back their tails though...
Okay comparing a leachianus gecko to a savannah Monitor or tegu is not a very educated comparison. Considering, their requirements of food, temperature, enclosure size and the amount of work in taking care of those reptiles is completely different from each other.
"I can't even handle it cause it jumps"
.....
"I don't need to handle all my lizards"
🙄
Would love to be given a leachie. It makes me sad that you are gifted animals that you don't even appreciate.
Can we get your opinion on chameleons? I've never seen one on your channel and I'm wondering if you guys have any in your care.
Haha I have a veiled chameleon named Krypto and ya he's a lot😂 and I spent way too much money on him so I'm guessing that might be why they don't take them in
Leachie: wrinkly sock puppet
Flighty, sensitive and aggressive may not be YOUR cup of tea but can make WONDERFUL pets for someone else. Your reasons make no sense either.
Captive bred individuals seem to tame down really well and its become more and more common recently for captive breeding for them due to how cool they are
Alex you’re insulting this lil boy right in front of himb 🥺
I'm planning on getting a leachie so I was SO excited to watch you roast them when you posted this 😂
They do grow their tails back. Do your research!
Goherping: I hate Leachies
Me: *completely fixated on the wrinklyboy
Oh no! Small peepee :(
Big calm gecko
Alex: no
Big angry gecko that bites and acts crazy all the time
Alex: now this.. this is great
I would love to see your thoughts on chameleons. I have one and I love them.
i respect your opinion alex. i love leachies, own one currently, and plan on breeding them in the future. i think they are the cutest species of gecko (and maybe lizard overall) especially because of their wrinkly skin. some people even refer to them as 'pajama' geckos, since their skin is so loose and floppy. i also love how derpy they are - similar to cresties but on a larger scale.
they are expensive upfront, but that is because they are difficult to breed and therefore in shorter supply than cresties or leopard geckos, but maintain high demand.
leachies are very picky with their partners aside from desiring monogamy - you can't just put a male and female together and expect them to easily mate. even when they get along they are very rough when mating, involving biting and nipping each other. as a result, if a pair genuinely doesn't tolerate each other, the usual mating behavior is exacerbated and can lead to serious injury and possibly fatalities, so pairs have to be closely watched. in some cases you may wind up having to find a new mate for your leachie, even if you had a pair planned for years.
they also don't reach sexual maturity until about 3 years, and even then it's not guaranteed that your female will start to produce eggs, nor that your pair will have fertilized eggs, nor that your pair will continue to produce (sometimes even after years together they can start to turn aggressive on one other). they lay 2 eggs per clutch, laying clutches a couple times (~4-10) throughout the year.
however, their care and upkeep is very minimal and low, similar to any new caledonian gecko. the second most expensive part is probably the terrarium, which depending on the locale and size of your leachie, an 18x18x24 or 24x24x18 is the standard minimum. we don't use any heating elements and keep ours at room temperature, which is usually mid to high 70s. of course if your room is colder than that then you'll need to invest in a heat lamp. uvb is optional (it's debated as to whether it has benefits or not, but it doesn't hurt to use it), and their terrarium usually just needs climbing elements, cork rounds, and a tropical substrate to help retain humidity. we spray them once at night, and feed every 2-3 days using crested gecko diet, which for those who don't know, is a pre-packaged powdered diet you add water to and mix into a small cup for your gecko. insects can be fed weekly, but some leachies are picky and may refuse insects.
i'll also add that like in your video, baby/juvenile leachies are definitely a lot more jumpy than older leachies. ours was very jumpy and skittish when he was 6 months and younger, but as he approaches a year old, he will stay still in your hand for a good while and not run away when you pick him up. it seems they get more laid-back and chill the older and larger they get. though it should also be pointed out that they are often cage defensive - they may try to bite or bark at you when they're in their cage, but once you take them out they tend to calm down (not in all cases of course).
When your early and don’t know what to say
That perfect ad placement tho where the gecko was just a violent mid-air blur in the last frame.
What can I say other than you're wrong.
I cant even count on all of my fingers how many times ive been bitten while trying to feed them-
They’re kinda scary looking lol
So glad to see your content again!
Stream your rants on twitch? Steal more reptiles to make fun of and rant about them for hours! I'd watch it.
I clicked on this, genuinely curious about the issues with them, and then remembered you also hate cresties and now this video makes so much sense lol
Me getting a Leachianus gecko in a couple months 😔
me this whole video: NO LOOK AT HIM HE'S ADORABLE AND WANTS TO CRAWL AND JUMP EVERYWHERE I LOVE HIM
"i don't like leachies"
i seem to recall you saying something similar about bearded dragons...
And iguanas
Such weird timing... someone in my town on craigslist is selling theirs for 3000 and I kept wondering why it's such a ridiculous price.
Wow you don’t like the arboreal geckos but like arboreal snakes? 😂😂
Arboreal snakes are pretty interesting to watch except green tree pythons, they just sit there
Tony Flamingo Sucks I mean they’re nocturnal right??
Bacon lol they’re nocturnal and don’t move at all :( it’s cool how they change from red to yellow to green though
Tony Flamingo Sucks yeah
You didn't change my mind..
He's SO FLAT when on the table!
