Meh, I guess. I've own my Tegu for the last 22 years. Tila is alright, I wouldn't recommend her to anyone. Their young adult stage is where they can be a bit of a stinker. Tila hated eating veggies and fruit. Child would throw the worst tantums over getting a bowl of it. Like flipping over water dishes, throwing her log about. Picking up the bowl and shaking it until all the fruit fell out. Following that up with standing tall, stomping around the cage and huffing.... Ugh don't even miss those days.... 22 years later with her and yeah I wouldn't get another lol.
We had a sav for nearly a decade and he was the most amazing pet we ever had. He roamed around the house with our cats, was incredibly friendly and super easy to handle. He'd just open his mouth and let us put the food in when we hand-fed him. He was housetrained and incredibly clever and playful. We spent a LOT of time handling him and taming him. Savs can be incredibly difficult, some of them never like being handled at all. Ours was tame like a puppy, but that doesn't mean all of them get like that. They require a ton of effort and attention. Getting tailwhipped by one can be pretty nasty. Ours only ever attacked when he was a baby and then completely stopped, but I've seen adult savs, which didn't want anyone near them at all. My point is, savannah monitors can be incredible, they can be fun, tame, even social and playful. They can also be total jerks.
I have a juvenile savannah monitor and it tail whips, hisses and bites when I try taking it out of the enclosure, I’ve had it for about 5 or six months and I try working with my sav as much as possible. Do you have any taming and trust tips?

I feel he should have mentioned that Tegus have adapted to survive in Florida as an invasive species & they r a big problem. Very important not to release an unwanted tegu outside country of origin.
Cuan Chulainn Florida’s climate is pretty unique compared to the other states, at least south Florida/some parts of central. Its humidity and year-round high temps (we wear long sleeves if it hits 70F lol) is pretty ideal for a lot of species that wouldn’t survive the, say, drops to 40F in Georgia or the extremely dry heats in other hot states. Plus, Florida Man will do what Florida Man does.
I love my savanna monitor and he loves me. Savannah motors are great and they can be really nice just need to spend a lot of time with them so that you can bond otherwise they don’t know you. Have a feeding routine outside of their enclosure so they never expect food there and will never confuse you with food. They are smart but if they just don’t trust you they will try and leave. You have to kind of force your friendliness on them until they trust you. Hold them a lot. When they’re trying to bite you or being aggressive, ball up your fist so that they can’t and show it’s who’s boss. Let them try, keep your fist balled up so they can’t bit you and try to pet them. Them keep petting them firmly so they know who’s boss. Let it sense that you can crush them at anytime and their attacks dont work yet all you do I love it. They will eventually be tamed and enjoy your company. Fall asleep while you carry them like a baby and give them kisses. Savannah monitors are the coolest. And it’s even cooler that you have to bond with them so much in order to tame them. Cause if you can do that you realize how smart they really are.
Tegus seem to have much more of a modern mammalian brain, They sometimes seem to really enjoy touch and they are amazingly easy to clicker train. Tegus are amazing. Please keep him.
I have 2 tegus, one red and one chacoan. They have been the best experiences I ever had with any reptile! If a lizard could be close to a dog, tegus would be that lizard! I love EVERYTHING about my 2 tegus! They have never pooped anywhere but their cage, and I've held them for an hour and a half straight! If someone wants a monitor, get a tegu instead! You might think at the time you want a monitor, but trust me, you want a tegu!
@@RGBSupremacy yeah, I've had my tegus for about 4 months, and they are already close to 3 ft! They've outgrown 3 Cage's! I'm building a 8ft by 4ft enclosure right now, and will let them have free range of my room. They grow faster than even most monitors I've had!
tegus are native to where i live, sounthern Brazil they may attack, but in general they are super friendly wild guys and are commonly feed by people and even petted! but it's illegal to keep one, even if captive bred
Your humor and personality is the main reason I have watched every video. Do I own any snakes, lizards or anything else that would warrant me being an active member of your channel. Nope. I have a service dog who is over 100lbs, and that is it. I love snakes, I love turtles, and loving some lizards. I have hopes to have a rescue for some herps in my cafe that I am working toward. So that they can educate. Now, will I become a member of the channel.... HELL YEAH! Keep it up kiddo and if ya'll every need a place in Austin to stay hit me up!
Obviously you can make your own decisions, but you look a hell of a lot happier with the tegu (as opposed to Bonnibel), and I hope that soon you're at a point in your life when you can keep one.
I have a savannah and I love him, he’s amazing, but I would never recommend one. He’s a lot of work and the more we learn about them in the wild the more we learn that we can’t really give them what they need in captivity. I don’t recommend big lizards at all but if you’re set on getting one, go with a tegu or a pre socialized water monitor.
Lizbeth Mendieta it’s honestly a good thing, because it turns away people who aren’t capable of owning a savannah. I honestly think he needs to rehome Bonnabel though. Moreso for his mental health and wellbeing than hers. Maybe to a zoo/rescue.
if you dont rant about how horrible savannah monitors are then you are a bad reptile owner and i literally own a sav monitor and love him more than all my other reptiles, but dont ever get a savannah monitor
The beginning made me laugh so hard 😂 super editing! No one could ever criticise your commitment, perseverance or the effort you put into your animals 👍
Yeah my tegus are SOOOO much easier to deal with than even my beardies! I Love the leopard patterns on red tegus. The older my red tegu gets, the more beautiful he gets!
I always love Savannah monitors because they remind me of the raptors from Jurassic park, their head shape and their beautiful eyes. id never get one though, ive seen too much that they would not be great for me
Having had, and still having both, the Tegu is easier to re tame if they didn't come from a good home, and were handled. Savannah Monitors grow out of being bad around year 4-5 I see if they had a bad up bringing, but, honestly keeping them both from the start...They were the same, and this is form keeping and breeding multiple male and female from birth and rescues. I consider both of them as beginner for a medium size lizard.
I have an argentine black and white tegu. The basking spot should be 120 degrees, not 100-110. Just a little FYI. UV bulbs also matter, some brands are much better than others. I know you said it wasnt a care video, I just wanted to point that out if any new tegu owners watches this video. My tegu story: I went through two countries to get my tegu. I was on the waiting list for 6 months, I was the first to pick one from the clutch. He's in an enclosure that is slightly bigger than 8x4x4 (its 250x125x125cm) and has his own room. I open the enclosure when im home and hang out with him. Great animal. But, he was a demon the first 6 months, so you have to be prepared for that (I honestly wasnt), but I never gave up and now hes as sweet as they can be. I do have a video with his growth over the months on my channel (I dont post reptile videos though, it was just a 100 subs special). I will gladly help if anyone have any questions 🙂
You got unlucky if your tegu was a work full in the first 6 months. That is most definitely not the norm. 120 is the absolute max you should go for a tegus basking spot and that's pushing it. Tegus come from a tropical climate. Their natural basking temps range from 90-110. And generally they spend most of their time burrowed. UVB is without a doubt, the most important aspect for most larger reptiles. Especially for a tegu due to once again, their tropical climate. Very nice on the enclosure size.
Before I even watched this video, I already knew I loved Tegus just by the tons of research I did. Probably not getting one any time soon -- I'll be investing into a ball python way before any of that. But, Tegus just not only look cool, but they just seemed like a way better pet compared to a lot of other lizards (especially a lot of other popular monitors). Tegus also get *so huge*! *Anyway*! Fab video~ ♥
I rescued a very abused Savannah monitor about a month ago. They are so for driven. It's crazy! He's pretty friendly for the most part but he still has his moments lol. I personally wouldn't recommend these animals to anyone unless they have a lot of money, time, and patience. I didn't realize what I was getting into when I rescued third monitor, I just knew I could give it a better chance than it's current situation. It was a real eye opener when I started researching their care. He's in good hands with me but I don't think I would ever get another one lol

@@sunflowerss122 make each interaction a positive one. I click trained mine to get him to warm up to me, lol. People use this method with birds, dogs, and other animals. Check out the non-judgemental Savannah monitor group on Facebook. They're very helpful :) I lucked out with mine being pretty calm. Although when he has his moments of attitude, I just leave him be. Younger ones are different though. I highly recommend checking the fb groups out for more experienced advice :)
You should keep him! But, I totally understand about not having enough time. I just bought another young horse, and I have forgotten about the amount of time a young horse takes. I’ve gotten used to my now, calm older horse. It’s good you are taking your time spent into consideration. Take care kid!
Ive had both, currently keep a gold tegu as my main pet, never been bit by my tegu but my savannah monitor use to nip me all the time in his first year so I def recommend Tegus over Savannah’s, plus Tegus eat everything we eat eggs/fish/fruit/veggie/ground turkey/etc and can be potty trained, clicker trained, hand fed, etc.
I feel bad because whenever I see a snake my stupid monkey brain still gets the urge to kill it. I love the little guys though so I'm trying to get better about it(I've never actually killed a snake but I want to stop feeling the fear)
I love tegus. They are so charming and can be so sweet if raised right. My local reptile store has a black and white tegu who just roams around the store sometimes (he isn’t always out, but he likes to take strolls lol). He’ll literally come up to you for pats and scritches. Super beautiful and friendly like cat.
As a tegu owner I greatly approve of this video! Savannah Monitors are just terrible pet’s: Being wildcaught, complex, and incredibly difficult to care for. Tegus. Are just AMAZING! 10/10 great video! And 10/10 that Tegus are awesome pets! (#tegusnotsavs!)
Idk there's just something about savs that are cooler than tegus IMO mostly the buff forearms and legs and dinosaur head, most savs do tame down quite well actually it's just most of the savs on RUclips are mistreated rescues who are traumatized. They are definitely more difficult to care for though but that much more rewarding because anyone can keep a tegu healthy but not many can keep a sav healthy
To your point of whether a novice should own an intermediate reptile, I am going to agree with you. I am glad there is a good amount of information out there, but it still should be to the benefit of these animals to have a more experienced handler taking care of them.
At the store that I work at, we've had a gold tegu for the past year and a half. She is an absolute monster and acts more like bonibel. The Savannah Monitors we've had have been relatively rude but I've been able to handle them to a point of being nice. Interesting how lizard behavior can vary so much between individuals. Loving your videos, can't wait to see the next one!
KEEP THE TEGU!!!! I’ve had mine for almost a year now and every day she brings me so much joy. I love her and her curiosity, her spunk, and her sense of humor.. they blossom into the most silly and wonderful and loving animals and you need to have one! (Obv I don’t support keeping a pet you can’t care for, but I do think you could!)
I had a Savannah Monitor and he was actually a peach outside of like a 6 month span. I haven’t had reptiles for quite a while. I’m planning for a Tegu eventually! I can’t wait!
I work at a reptile rescue herps alive foundation in Cleveland and most of the time with Savannah monitors come in they are pretty mean but there's this one that's pretty old that surprisingly just loves people there's also a fully grown red tegu that is probably the meanest I've ever seen you get anywhere near the cage it will charge at the glass and head- but it full force
Also remember that argentinian overo tegus are more chill than bolivian red tegus. And please put them in real sun sometimes, they love sun, and walking a bit, and chilling in some stone or hot dirt. They're not snakes that can be still for a year
Snakes won't be still for a year either of you give them to room to explore, they're mostly lethargic when kept in undersized enclosures as many people do.
@@cooperolm9687 yea I know, it's an exageration, also depending on the species and individual, like ball pytons and little sand boas behaving differently. Compared to most snakes though, tegus are more active.
I've got a Savannah monitor named Monte and, as much as I love him, I would never recommend them for anyone. He's my baby and I couldn't imagine not having him, but the amount of time and money I've spent on him is a little ridiculous. (Not to mention the scars I now have for the rest of my life) My next pet will definitely be a tegu. Wish you could keep that little guy. He seems perfect for you. Great video💖
I work at a petco and I have to say I've been inspired to consider owning a reptile simply because of the care I see our reptile care dude puts into their happiness and husbandry. We have a solomon skink, a quince monitor, crocodile skinks, true fire skinks, red beardies and tegus (red and argentine) in addition to our snakes, turtles and frogs. People come from hours away to our particular location because of our reputation in our reptile department as having healthy animals and a knowledgeable staff. Chain stores are slowly but surely becoming more and more care conscious, and my particular store is fortunate in having people who are driven, caring hobbyists as representatives. I just wish they would be more selective on their wholesalers who often send us injured, ill or diseased animals that we often have to nurse for weeks or even months before becoming saleable. It breaks my heart whenever we get a bad shipment and the little guys don't make it.
James Headley I have an ackie, he/she is alright...no good with handling right now (it is relatively young still tho) but yeah, it’ll try to bite me when I do, but it does at least trust me to where it’ll stay out while I’m in my room.
Arnica Moana I know it feels like it, but it’s actually making things a lot worse. By buying wild caught it supports more wild caught selling.. which is overall not a good thing because of the risks that come with it. I definitely would go for a captive bred animal. This applies with any animal you can get that has the ability to be bought captive bred.. If you ever do decide to get a tegu keep this in mind
Alpha Wollf wild caught from florida. where they’re invasive and being killed en masse. that doesn’t affect the market of wild caught from their native country. it takes individuals out of where they aren’t supposed to be and supports those trapping them. where is the downside?
Oh well, I did not know that.. thank you for telling me. I still stand by the opinion to go for captive bred animals, but I have looked into and yeah this would be a good exception I believe.. thank you for informing me of this haha. Sorry for the criticism
For the most part, you articulate very well as a young man. And you generally offer good advice in your videos, but I couldn't help to disagree with the majority of this video. We have had very different experiences concerning larger reptiles. My savannah is roughly 14 years old. Savannahs are primarily insectivores. From time to time if given the opportunity, savannahs will catch small mammals/fish to consume in the wild. They generally spend most of their time burrowing for grubs/scorpions in the wild. I have kept him at around 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit his whole life occasionally adjusting temps for the winter. My sav and tegu are identical in temperament in that they are both like dogs. I generally let them free roam together and they love to bask on top of one another. Since they are roughly the same size (just a little over 5ft each) they get along very well. My tegu has mainly been fed a carnivorous diet his whole life with the occasional fruit here and there. He does get alot of eggs and rarely will he get a rat. Tegus consume a lot of carrion in the wild and are primarily scavengers. They are closely related to monitors. But they come from tropical climates. The warmest basking temp I'll give him is 110 which is just above the lowest I'll give my. I love them both equally and in my honest opinion make great large beginner reptiles.
Hey so I have a question my turtle go this large blister after my friend put him in a pot of boiling water yes he is clumsy but I think my turtle is ok do I just provide him sub zero temperatures?
Every Savannah monitor I have ever worked with, even the most aggressive full size ones, have turned into nice pets with time and patience. My own sav behaved like yours at first, but now he's a big baby that will happily ride around in a dog stroller and lay on the sofa with me. I used "bath time" as a way of bonding with my monitor because he loved swimming and felt much less stressed. Afterwards, I would sit on the floor with a bowl of his favorite food item and tong feed it to encourage him to approach on his own to get it. Eventually, he learned I was something positive and not to view me as a threat.
My tegu was a third hand animal and she was a major pain in the ass when I first got her. But now I’ve worked with her and she’s great. She hangs out with me she’s such a personality. I have her free roaming in my room and it’s working great. I had almost got a savannah monitor and I’m so glad I didn’t get one 😊
When I was a teenager and didn't know any better, I got a Tegu and a Nile Monitor at the same time. I kept the Monitor for about a month before selling it. The Tegu was with me for 19 wonderful years. One day when my cats are gone and my sons are in College, I plan on having a Tegu again.
Dude I know a tegu that got beaten by some dumba** kids because they thought it would be cool, then he was beaten by a dude while his friend held the tegu down by the tail with his foot, poor tegu had to rip off the end of his tail to get away (the reason why they were beating him was because they thought he was a Gila monster sml) Anyways, he ended up hiding in a drain until the rescue team that I volunteer at rescued him, he is the sweetest big boi you’ve ever met, sadly however he has permanent head damage and has to take special meds for his migraines... but yeah, he’s good other than that!
I found this interesting, I have a 6 year old captive bread savannah monitor and he is a good size, I've been researching tegu's for the past couple of years and now I think I'll get one, thank you👍🏼
yeah but at the end of the day would you recommend anyone owning a sav? wouldnt it be better to keep literally any other monitor species? or simply a tegu?
@@danh7805 honestly I wouldn't recommend a Savannah monitor for any one unless you have a tone of time and a free room in you house because my Savannah was huge he was at least 4 feet long and he ate a lot and needed to be held at leas 2 hours a day to go play around and explore
Growing up I always wanted a monitor,I finally got one and it lasted a year .too aggressive and as u say the heat level is hard.now I’ve had a tegu for about 2 years and yes a totally different experience, only thing is my tegu doesn’t really like being held but she free roams my house with no issues and can be pet whenever ❤
This is actually really interesting because I've owned both and had the complete opposite experience, I rescued my Savannah from someone who was only (rarely) feeding her scrambled eggs and kept her in a small tank but she was the sweetest and loved to cuddle.. my tegu was a baby and took 2.5 years to tame.. got bit so many times by him lol
I agree with your opinion about getting beginner animals. My sister hasn't kept an animal but has wanted an axolotl for 6 years now and has assembled her own care manual from however many books. She's been watching youtube videos and reading huge reference books on them for the last 6 years and i think it's ok if she goes for it. They're a more advanced animal but she doesn't want anything else and has done the research.
I know you say you can't keep the tegu right now, which is so admirable, but remember there will always be another tegu that needs a home. When the time is right for you, I'm sure you'll find an awesome tegu for you!
the whooping/baying kinda sound around 8:58 had me so freaked out, I thought it was one of my dogs being very upset about something until I played the clip back about 10 times

He deserves to keep that Tegu 😰💕

The savanna monitor is in bad condition. And is very hard to work with. He needs to keep the monitor because it will likely harm the owner.

I always love Savannah monitors because they remind me of the raptors from Jurassic park, their head shape and their beautiful eyes. id never get one though, ive seen too much that they would not be great for me
Formorian they even move like raptors from Jurassic park lol
Thanks for being responsible enough to rehome an animal you want to keep because you can't keep it well.
thank you for all your videos. every time i have some questions your opinion is always one of my sources.

Miss NA I have a juvenile savannah monitor and it tail whips, hisses and bites when I try taking it out of the enclosure, I’ve had it for about 5 or six months and I try working with my sav as much as possible. Do you have any taming and trust tips?

Ive had both, currently keep a gold tegu as my main pet, never been bit by my tegu but my savannah monitor use to nip me all the time in his first year so I def recommend Tegus over Savannah’s, plus Tegus eat everything we eat eggs/fish/fruit/veggie/ground turkey/etc and can be potty trained, clicker trained, hand fed, etc.
My mother's boyfriend killed a 3 foot tegu in the back yard; I was so mad and said they should have kept it as a guard dog.
Wtf is wrong with you?
To your point of whether a novice should own an intermediate reptile, I am going to agree with you. I am glad there is a good amount of information out there, but it still should be to the benefit of these animals to have a more experienced handler taking care of them.
The first time I've ever heard of a tegu was Winston the tegu off Facebook. Check him out! He's a very cute and charismatic reptile

That Tegu looks so excited while eating the tomato lol
I had a Savannah Monitor and he was actually a peach outside of like a 6 month span. I haven’t had reptiles for quite a while. I’m planning for a Tegu eventually! I can’t wait!
Can you do a video about the best ways/places to adopt reptiles🙌🦎🐍
Bonnebell is quaking
Would you consider an ackie monitor as they are pretty chill and small and look amazing. Keep up the good vids i love this channel
James Headley I have an ackie, he/she is alright...no good with handling right now (it is relatively young still tho) but yeah, it’ll try to bite me when I do, but it does at least trust me to where it’ll stay out while I’m in my room.
Ive been doing a lot of research lately I really want one. Most of the time keepers really like them.
The intro was killing me 😂😂 love the duality 😘
If I got a tegu, I’d buy one of the ones wild caught from florida. feels like it’s supporting a good cause
Yeah I'd say that's one of the good exceptions for buying wild caught
GoHerping it’s probably one of the only ones I can think of worth supporting tbh, at least outside of rehab or rehab/release
Oh well, I did not know that.. thank you for telling me. I still stand by the opinion to go for captive bred animals, but I have looked into and yeah this would be a good exception I believe.. thank you for informing me of this haha. Sorry for the criticism
I am not the kind of parent who would like a reptile... so I watch these because I like seeing passionate people.

Lol very kool video. 👍 I agree with you. I have 2 myself.
Tegu: Baby boy. Baby.
Monitor: Evil.
I'm amazed how sweet he is after a human BURNED HIM. What a good boy. Protect him. ;u;
It just goes to show how sweet and precious tegus are 😭
it was more than likely a burn from a heat source, still could be the owners fault but i doubt the previous owner directly burnt him
Dude I know a tegu that got beaten by some dumba** kids because they thought it would be cool, then he was beaten by a dude while his friend held the tegu down by the tail with his foot, poor tegu had to rip off the end of his tail to get away (the reason why they were beating him was because they thought he was a Gila monster sml)
Anyways, he ended up hiding in a drain until the rescue team that I volunteer at rescued him, he is the sweetest big boi you’ve ever met, sadly however he has permanent head damage and has to take special meds for his migraines... but yeah, he’s good other than that!

I was super mad yesterday when I went to a Petco and they had a baby Savannah monitor for 50 and labeled as a beginner animal 😤😤😤
Both are extremely adorable though! Even though Bonibel is a poopster.
I know you say you can't keep the tegu right now, which is so admirable, but remember there will always be another tegu that needs a home. When the time is right for you, I'm sure you'll find an awesome tegu for you!
