I am not Sikh but I understand this by living and working with Sikhs ..... Being Sikh is about good actions and living a good life . They are great people and the world would be a better place with a lot more Sikhs in it . If a man wants to grow his hair , grow a beard , wear a turban , thats just fine by me . I believe with his hair shaved off he will still be a good man , a great man even .

I am Native American, 26 years old, and I just befriended a Sikh. His name is Baljeet.
I grew up in Southern America (Mississippi) so I was always taught to stay away from people in turban/anybody with different skin color. I KNOW that way of thinking is wrong, it never felt right to judge anyone because of their outer appearance..
I am older now, I lead my own life. I understand different religions and I do my research. I connected with the Divine Spirit through meditation. I would kneel down on the ground and beg for forgiveness and for the Divine to watch over me and lead me away from negativity.
For a long time I listened to my ego...I cared too much about what people thought, I thought I would always be lonely because no one else I knew listened to the Divine. But now...my Sikh friend came into my life and opened my eyes. I am learning more about Sikh religion in a very tough time of my life and now everything makes sense...I am grateful for this religion. I WISH I would have been introduced to it sooner but I know everything happens at the time it is suppose to happen.
Now I do not feel so alone and I am never cutting my hair again 😂 💕

Im a Sikh and I cut my hair. But one thing I dont try to do is try to justify my ego of not wanting to let my hair grow out and make excuses for it stating that “Oh I cut my hair but im a nice guy”. Yes you can be a better person than someone who doesn’t cut their hair but the point of the matter is that you still have an ego attached to ur mindset that doesn’t allow you to grow out your hair, which is ultimately a flaw.
One who cut his/ her hair is not a sikh.. we don't want fake people in our religion.

Also, for those of you who are continually going on with the "we keep kesh to respect God's creation", well, in that case - why wear clothes, Waheguru didn't send us in these.
Guru Gobind Singh told the "Khalsa" to keep kesh as a sign of saintliness, but what a saint is - is clearly defined in Gurbani, therfore simply keeping 5 ks without studying and following Gurbani is like wearing an army uniform without any military training.

@@indrajeet you're right in saying that a sikh should understand scripture as well as following rehat, which is why santhiya is so important but wrong in saying that kes are just "a sign of saintliness" they're necessary in helping us during meditation and if Guru Gobing Singh Ji Maharaj himself has ordered all sikhs to keep their kes, then it shouldn't even be something that needs speculation if you're a sikh. If you do disregard this however, for whatever reason, you either think that you know more about god that god himself or you don't believe that guru gobind singh ji was God in the flesh, in which case you're simply not a sikh, and there's nothing wrong with that. You can talk about anything you want about cutting your hair and eating meat if you're not a sikh, the problem arises if people start suggesting that sikhism doesnt rlly say x or y when they know little to nothing in the first place.

But Hair are important for Sikhs. We don't keep hair, they grow by themselves , people just cut their hair. Guru Gobind Singh ji has made it compulsory for Sikhs to not to murder hair 😊

someone could be wearing a turban and following all the 5k's, but then also completely disregarding the teachings of the guru's. Sikhi focuses on the internal well being and then external. I do however respect whether u chose either, because with a turban or not, sikhism is about internally understanding the lessons given by our guru's.

I'm sorry to say but i think You didn't get his point. It's about loving your body as it is, without worrying about what others think if you don't change this. If you cut your hair simply because you think you don't look good, that's a problem.

A tad bit idealistic, it is one thing to agree from a sikh perspective that anyone could be a good person and express the importance of humility by understanding the passages of the likes of bhagat kabir ji who had this mentality of never thinking of anyone as being below you as it gives birth to haumai but to state that sikhism is all about "internal issues" is just not true and comes off as an attempt to say that no matter if you commit bujjar kurehats by eating meat, or cutting your hair, you can still be a good sikh, which simply isn't true. The standards for the title of "True Sikh" as maharaj describes are much more strict than simply someone who has taken amrit, but even by a sikh societal standard, you have to at least be someone that has taken amrit and follows rehat properly to even have the right to call yourself a sikh at all. Sikhism is about being a gurmukh through and through, and cherrypicking what you want to follow and leaving out what you find inconvenient while claiming vague things like "sikhism is about the inside, as long as a person's heart is clean.." etc isn't what sikhism is about, it's what being a manmukh is about.

It’s all about the internal actions not external looks. What’s the point in someone having turban & bears but their actions are bad such as talking about others, bad behaviours etc. So it’s irrespective of looks but actions of a person
I completely agree with you, many angry people in this comments section claiming if you cut your hair you can't call yourself a Sikh. Absolute disgrace to the Sikh religion, instead of focusing on actions they are more obsessed with looks. Now for anyone reading this, don't get me wrong here, keeping your hair is an important part of Sikhi but if your actions are terrible there is no point of it. I'm a Sikh. I cut my hair and I pray. It's a choice I made early in my life. I don't regret it, it was just something that worked for me. I agree with most comments here that it's not about the aesthetics but about being a good person and living a righteous life and to help others

I have a lot of respect of Hinduism and Sikhism and they are both rooted on the same land. different people are just leaving in different ways be Hindu or Sikh. Whats more important is how Humane one is... I agree all the gurus, rishis all grew and do have long hair.
Their is a big misconception that external things such as hair, beards, Turbans, 5k's, are a requirement to be a Sikh, this cannot be further from the truth. Sikhi focuses on the internal first, then the external.

1. One God
2. The 10 Human Gurus & Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
3. All the writings/teachings of the Guru
4. Does not identify with any other faith
It says nothing about keeping hair or a turban. If we apply those strict rules you're talking about in the definition of a Sikh, then all of a sudden most Sikhs won't even be classified as Sikhs anymore.

Be Happy, Believing and Practicing are two different things. Using you're logic, only fully practicing Amritdhari Khalsa are Sikhs. The Sikh Rehat Maryada is written in a way to allow non Amritdharis to also call themselves Sikh.

If someone doesn't want to keep hairs, he or she has endless excuses like migraines, sinus headache, dandruff, etc. More important is practicing what your guru has ordered you.

Harsimran Singh Bir, perhaps we misunderstood what is meant by natural. We mow our lawns, we weed our crops, we cook our food. Why do all that, just remain natural. You see how we cherry pick being natural as just applying to hair. Please don’t confuse tradition of keeping hair as requirement. The requirement only applies to Khalsa as it is specifically stated, the rest is just conjecture.

It has nothing to do with maintaining ancient Indian/ Hindu Tradition
In fact the whole effort of Nanak and the following Gurus was to tell them to stop blindly following tradition... on the bank of the Ganges Nanak tried to splash water in the direction of his fields rather than follow the blind Hindu Ritual/ Tradition of trying to splash water towards their dead ancestors in the celestial world !!
It was to tell them to break blind traditions and realise the folly of their superstition
Again he has no idea of who and what the Buddha did, or taught or wore!
In the times when all Mystics and spiritual seekers grew long threaded hair ( the Jattadaris) and smeared their faces with ashes etc, Buddha deliberately shaved his head and refused to smear his face with ash ... this was to tell the people that the outward dress and appearance has little with the inside journey ...
both Nanak and the Buddha were reformers and had to get the people out of their blind superstition and beliefs .
My understanding of why the Sikh was made to wear a turban/ long hair ?
Because the Guru ( Gobind) wanted the Sikh to wear a dress and be seen as a Sikh from far... to stand out bravely , courageously and be ready to be seen and identified by the enemy

When someone does tappasya and gains tappo bal, hair is necessary to retain that tappo bal or else it is lost... Thats why rishis, maha rishis all had long beard and hair....

You are right. Sant Maskeen Singh ji also affirm the same. Kesh have their own importance in bhakti marg.
Making following comments with utmost respect for Satpal Singh ji.
Problem is not 'keeping hair or not keeping hair'. Problem is the amount of importance given to the hairs. People assume they become Sikh by merely keeping hair and wearing turban.
If we are aatman not the body nor the mind then why so much importance to one body part? Cut it or not, major importance should be given to cleansing of mind and then transcending mind.
If hair is important then so is all other body parts. People eat all kind of junk in the name of being vegetarian which is even more harmful then meat. Ideal functioning of this body is vital for self realization.
I think learned persons and our sikh preachers should consider cutting hair to show the importance of cleansing mind and being nobel first.
Guru Nank told pandits the importance of mind control then wearing jenau (sacred body string). Same apply to Sikhs. "Maan nu bano phela, paag nhi".
Keeping hair and wearing turban was norm in India at that time. You can see various turbans worn by people across India. Only students and teachers used to keep chonti to distinguish them from others. Later pandits misused this getup. But orginal intention was different.
Don't make hair growing as if it belongs to Sikhs only and don't make Sikhism about keeping hair. Our gurus belongs to everyone in the world irrespective of appearance.

Also, you don't become a Sikh by being born and raised in a Sikh family, you become a Sikh when you practice the Guru's Hukam. Sikh literally means the person who follows the Guru's hukam and so Sikh is a definition of such person and not of a religion. Any one of any caste who practices and follows the hukam of his religion is a Sikh.

As they are all commiting bujjar kurehats and are not baptised and following rehat. That said though, there are plenty of good practicing sikhs here especially in england

Here i got answer for u , we only cut dead nail so it doesn’t hurt , when sometime we cut our nail more what it need to be cut it hurts. So we only cut dead nail and same thing happens with hair as well, when we comb dead hair comes out . So we or our need to get rid of those things which need to be removed

Back in olden days everybody would work with hand and feet in the farmlands. While they work hard in farmlands their nails will automatically get cut. Those times there were no machines, everything was done by hands.

But for a true aspirant, following orders of the teacher must be the most important thing. As Swami Vivekananda said, one must test guru thoroughly before getting initiated.

P.S.- what this man in video trying to say is one can of course worship God (with or without long hair). But it was his point that there is no need to shave ,if it is going to regrow. It's growing in natural way. But it is itchy or for any good reason, you want to shave, then it's your choice. It has nothing to do with Gurbani, Guruduwara and good Sikh deeds.
It's just it is a recognization given us from Guru Gobind Singh ji. Sikh loves to keep them, following their teacher. They want to keep it as their tradition and roots. Everyone respects and love theie roots.

First of all, Thank you for your wonderful teachings. I am still not sure about the hair thing. Why don't you see nails in the same way? I guess, for practical reasons. I see hair a bit in the same way. I don't mind wear a turban, but I would still want to have short hair underneath because it feels better. No one needs to see it. Anyway, I do respect your look and I find you attractive in your way but not completely convinced in the spiritual side of it.
We only cut the extra dead nails and if u cut the whole nail, it will bleed...Similarly, when we comb the hair, dead hairs get taken off. So cutting nails are like combing hairs. 🙏
Hi , nails have a very low cross sectional area but not in the case of hair . when you cut your hair they go into healing mode which affects your body nutrient value because your hair will try to achieve the desired length.

When we cut our hair, our body turns into a healing mode. The hair starts growing to achieve its desired length according to different bodies. People who cut their hair are actually growing their hair continuously till they die. When you do not cut your hair, it will stop growing after achieving its desired length. It does not grow continuously. And when it grows it also absorbs nutrients from your body.

After reading some comments I agree that there is no point keeping Kesh if you're just going to do bad actions but we are only looking at 2 possibilities here, someone with cut hair who is good and someone with long hair who isn't good. Its easy to judge this as a way of making a shortcut to "being a good person". What about having long hair and being a good person and having short hair but doing bad deeds? What looks the best out of these now?
For the Sikhs who are doubting the relevance of Kesh today stop looking for answers from other people, everyone whether they have Kesh or not will tell you what they think. Read Gurbani and understand the hukams of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and make your own decision, if you put effort into finding out this way im sure you'll make the correct decision!

I have always been, am, and always will be a Kes-dhari Sikh. I had a very hard childhood and often wished I had cut my hair; things have happened to me which I would not wish on anyone.
But I am now glad that I have always been Kes-dhari and have never tried to hide that I am a Sikh. Because I have lived through the toughest times as a Kes-dhari and now Anmrit-dhari Sikh, I am intellectually independent, mentally tougher, more emotionally mature, and more open-minded.
I have had your discussion with numerous Sikhs without Kes. I told them that I understood that many career and personal paths would be closed to me because I am Anmrit-dhari -- and I accepted the prices I have paid and will pay were sometimes very high. They have more professional success than I ever will have, yet they all said they envied me.

You can have a big beard unshorn hair, it's all show. Most of our "leaders" in Punjab have the same. Eg Badal etc, or look at your local Gurdwara committee. What matters is your character. The great Hindu warriors Marathas , rajputs , agrasenis ,etc had long hairs.
They had turbans above their heads. Even before guru Nanak deo ji stated sikhi. The great warriors just about 200 years ago Prithviraj Chavan , Aala, Udal had long hairs. And many had turbans as well. So no point in cutting the hairs. It's British culture to cut hairs and we should reject it with full opposition. In schools keeping or growing hairs should be optional in missionary schools also there should be no compulsion to cut the hairs for boys

Anyone who has even a semi decent understanding of sikh history as a sikh would never cut their hair. The sakhis of shaheed singhs when read in detail are enough to make even the toughest of hearts weep with sorrow and when you cut your hair as a sikh, you are throwing all of that away. My tip to you ramneek is that you read through the history of shaheed singhs and their stories, and if the sources are in hard punjabi, ask a parent to translate for you.

Whenever they decides to be in complete Spiritually determined mode for some particular continous days( may be 40 or more days or sometimes even more days) by taking ayyappa maala(maala=dheekshas), bhavani maala, govindha maala, Or any other dheekshas etc...will not cut their hair, beard, nails & donot wear the chappals even and wears a single colored clothes (Black,Blue,Red,Yellow.....) through out their dheeksha period { Now a days, Chappals and clothes are exceptional if and only if they need truely in their works etc... }

to be honest i have no issue with being looked at by others and looking different and conforming to modern expectations. its just a inconvenience for me as it renders me unable to do certain things and me being a swimmer it makes it really hard as after swimming i must wash my hair straight after and also it takes time and on top of this it makes me slower in the morning and i have been late at least 40-50 times due to this.

I think this video still doesn't address a very important issue, which is convenience. The idea of vanity and insecurity of how others perceive you is an important point to bring up. However, cutting your hair makes it easier to manage, Yes, it grows back-- why is that a sign that you're not supposed to cut it rather than a sign that you can cut it and not worry that it won't grow back? It's typically quite easy for us to stay healthy and understand our body if we just listen to it. Going off of that theory, shouldn't it hurt when we cut our hair if we're not supposed to do it?

Hey Tahlia, yes it does hurt. But we've lost touch with ourselves... We must be in tune with our natural forms in order to feel that. As a woman I was desentized having growing up shaving, waxing etc. When I kept my hair and did this again once, it was very painful. It hurts physically and emotionally. My hair is a part of me and my body. To remove my hair feels so unnatural now. Hope that made more sense.
Also as for inconvenience, do you honestly believe paying (financially and time wise) to alter our hair is better than just leaving as is? Cut hair is harder to tie up, can have loose ends, come into the face etc. Longer hair can easily be tied in a knot. Super convenient. No need to get a haircut. Super convenient. No need to worry about latest trends. Super convenient. No need to spend time plucking waxing shaving to meet social norms. Super convenient. Not to mention the countless benefits spiritually. Hope I did not come across too blunt. I've laid only facts and experiences in this comment. The rest is up to you to be aware of how it is society itself that has bred vanity and insecurity, not the other way around.
Satinderjit Kaur not too blunt, it was a conversation I wanted to have. :) I like to think I'm pretty in tune with my body. I'm try very hard to take more natural approaches with every element of my body-- from using exercise and food instead of prescription medication to using natural daily products as well as clothes. That being said, natural things cost money too. The economy is corrupt and that's the way it works. I don't expect that to be any indication of what is more natural or not. In terms of cutting hair hurting, I can see waxing hurting, and knicking yourself while shaving hurting, but how does cutting off your head hair hurt physically? If worried about not being able to tie it up and loose ends, can't you just cut it short enough that you don't have to deal with that problem of it getting in your face?
The symbolism inherent in not cutting hair or altering the body can be supportive and reinforcing of the mindset in Sikhi. However, the basic message is about a healthy self-acceptance and respect for nature and being careful not to fall into vanity. You can do what's practical for you so long as it doesn't promote vanity and self-aggrandizement or preoccupation with artifice and superficiality, which are hindrances to the spiritual path. If you are wrongly concerned about how you look to others then that too is a hindrance to self-realization.
What about finger and toe nails. If left will grow too?
I'm a Sikhs. It's not very practical to keep letting your nails grow. They will always continuously keep growing. Look at the world record holder for longest nails. It's so impractical because you can't cook, clean, and do other things properly. Unlike your nails, hair will reach terminal length and stop growing.

That's surely not very practical. Having long hair isn't impractical at all. It's just because many aren't used to it. Thousands and thousands of Sikhs have long hair. Woman have long hair.
We tie our hair up in a Jura(topknot/bun) to keep it tamed, neat and out of the way and also to protect it. You see women doing ponytails or other styles. You can easily wash it so it's not unhygienic.

Point being, it's just impractical to have long nails compared to hair. Hair can be washed, tamed and tied up. Nails can get very dirty underneath, not to mention super unhygienic when cooking or using the bathroom. There was a study that showed there are more germs under your nails than there are on a toilet seat simply because of the sheer number of things we come into contact with with our hands.

I think this is the difference and unique relationship between Sikh and Khalsa - Sikh is our umbrella term that encompasses all communities within it's realm (Nanakshahis, Nanakpanthis, Sehajdharis, hundladharis, kesadharis, Dadupanthis, Sufis historically, Kabirpanthis, Ravidassay, etc) and in this realm the main foundation are Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharajs 3: Kirat Karo Naam Jaapo and Vand Shuko. These are like the step 1a, 1b and 1c - the core of every Sikh and Khalsa - to become initiated by the Sacred Khanda, the Iron bowl and to keep Kes while adhering to the code of conducts brings in those conditions of maintaining saroop as our Guru has commanded therefore we obey our when we have chosen the Guru as our master. Everything is one, Chaar Varaan ik vaaran karouu, udasis and sunnaisis shaved their heads when joining their fold but were treated as an Ang of the Paanth before colonization. But when they became khalsa (as seen with the Nirmalay and Sevapanthis) they follow that maryada given to us by dasvah Patshah. Of course this all changed because of the results of colonization and the redefining of "Sikh" in the fervor of the Singh Sabha movement. Just some thoughts and exploration, Phul chuk maaf!
Sikh is not an umbrella term at all, and is quite extensively and specifically defined within maharaj's bani. To go down the route that claims Khalsa is in some way separate or just one part of it is very false. Dasve Patshah was god himself and he not only took amrit himself but passed on jot to Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj as our current Guru, the Khalsa wasnt just some warrior sect, it was an order to all Sikhs that they were to be initiated to unite all previous scattered denominations and sects under one complete identity, the Khalsa. Any people today that claim to be a part sikhi but have not taken amrit and do not follow the rehat properly do not qualify as sikhs. The point being here that the Khalsa after its formation is what Sikhi as a whole is defined as. Anything outside of that today can be classified outside of sikhi, not under it as some umbrella term. Yes these practices can be related to the origins of sikhism but to claim that theyre different forms of it is false.
