I miss that van, it was traded in 2010... It was my grandmother's van before she passed and it was given to my mother. she had a 1996 Mercury Red villager GS. That was the beginning of my driving in 2008 driving and doing errands back and forth up and down the street for the family.

My sister and brother-in-law had a Mercury Villager. It was very fancy. I remember it having all leather seating and a theater surround sound system.

White with white wheels. A 13.1 sec 0-60 being respectable, combined with 20 mpg. It was a different time...

Used to have a Villager Nautica. Too bad the rats chewed up the wire and the previous owner dented the subframe. Still handled ok, AC was CRAZY, blew like the arctic wind.

This Villager make me think of some friends of ours whose Villager was almost exactly like this one here and the movie Boys On The Side; which was driven quite a lot of in the movie.

All of the minivans from that era had pretty similar 0-60 times (between 10.5 and 14), lol. I find it funny how John would be either overly critical or permissive of certain cars with similar 0-60 times… you could tell if he didn’t personally like the vehicle imo, lol.

I remember seeing an article in the paper years ago (mid-90s) about the family featured in this MW episode perishing in an automobile accident in IL or somewhere around there. It's sad to watch this episode and not think about them 😢

Our first minivan was the 1996 Mercury minivan and it is the worst vehicle we’ve owned with many issues to fix during and after warranty. The worst issue was the automatic transmission failed at 80k miles then again at 170K miles forced me to sell it to junkyard.
In contrast our second minivan a 2005 Toyota Sienna is still running flawlessly at 322K miles and 17 years later with nothing major needed to be replaced: engine, transmission, AC, suspension components, struts, engine mounts, fuel pump, electric windows all work like new and we plan to keep this super reliable Toyota Sienna for many more years to come. Kids are all grown up but we still love the Sienna for long distance road trips and daily commuting. This Sienna has never been towed, always completed the trips and make to repair shop on its own power.

I saw one of these yesterday surprisingly in good condition. I bet it was the only one in the city.

13.1 to 60 is much slower than I remember seeing from most magazines of the era; IIRC most managed high 11s/low 12s. This number is slower even, than the 4-cyl Previa previously tested by MW

If the Windstar had come from the same quality as this truck it would have also sold like hot cakes.

Poor crash test ratings along with poor sales led to the cancellation of the entire line.

It’s crazy how people and mfr didn’t care about car safety and crash test back then, especially for a family vehicle. Back then, after a car accident my mom had, my parents ended up getting a Volvo and Mercedes bc they were supposedly known to be safer cars, but not sure if they were actually safer.

This generation gotten a marginal rating, while the 1999 model performed EVEN worse and getting a poor rating.
