Hastings is a town on England’s southeast coast. It's known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands.
Two points of interest dominate the character of the bustling East Sussex town of Hastings - the sea and 1066. One of the medieval Cinque Ports, Hastings has long had a close relationship with the ocean, and although its fishing industry has declined, it still has Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet.
Today the town offers a range of attractions for the short break visitor looking for what to do in Hastings. From Britain's steepest funicular, to the meandering alleyways of the Old Town, it's a great place to explore for a few days.
Bexhill is just a short cycle ride or bracing seafront stroll from Hastings as far as elegant Bexhill, the birthplace of British motor racing.
Visit the nearby town of Battle and see the site of the famous 1066 Battle of Hastings at Battle Abbey.
The history-rich town of Hastings retains the character and charm of a Victorian seaside resort. Explore the lanes and passageways of the Old Town, lined with vintage shops, boutiques and welcoming cafés. Small independent art galleries line the streets to sell their art that is heavily influenced by the surrounding landscapes. When you're on the beach, don't miss the famous black fishing huts that line the seafront.
A seaside resort that developed in Victorian times, Hastings retains its old-world charm with its seafront squares, grand Victorian facades, elegant parks and pier full of good old-fashioned amusements.
The medieval Old Town offers a chance to explore the narrow passageways with an enticing array of independent cafés, restaurants and shops selling art, antiques, flowers and food.
Located in South East England, Hastings is easily accessed from London.
Hastings Pier has recently been refurbished to its former glory. When the elegant pier first opened in 1872, on the site of a submerged prehistoric forest, it was the pride and joy of the town. A place for leisure and pleasure, from its American bowling alley to its joy wheel - a popular amusement ride at the time which involved being spun round on a giant revolving disc
Hastings has characterful accommodation by the bucket load. And if you want something more traditional, you’ll find welcoming Hotels and B&Bs aplenty.
There really is something for everyone here in Hastings UK.

Lovr Hastings. Uesd to come here a lot when I was a kid. Had friends that had a hotel in Warrior Square. Last time I visited was in the 90s. Thanks so much for this.😎
It was my home for 2 years, missing it greatly and I can't wait to visit next week :). ❤❤❤❤
Lovely place
I studied English in Hastings back in the summer of 1999…I loved the place and the people. Greetings and love from Morocco 🇲🇦
Loved the video. Hastings is so clean and well kept. Last went there 60 years ago as a child. Living in Canada now.
Ah greetings to you in Canada! 🇨🇦
Hastings is clean becusse they buired all the dead bodies under the sand not leaving the innthe beach
The two builders on basement flat are planning to steal my kayak with hastings police

Ah great stuff - hope everything goes amazingly well for you ❤️
Great video but you should have carried on walking past the old town to see Rock a Nore! Its amazing :)
Missed hastings 😢 I once got Great times there back in late 90’s..
Pier used to have club where I spent my time with other students from arround the world..
Been a while since I've visited. Looking forward to the Premier.
Great video! If any chance you go to Hastings again, have a look on the West Hill and East Hill, above the old town on its west and east. Also go and see the Hastings Country Park on the east side of Hastings, all are amazing places with stunning views 👌
It's been a long time since I visited. Thanks for showing me around again 😊
You’re welcome - thanks for watching my channel! 👍❤️
A quaint seaside resort with a lot of history behind Lovely place Thanks
It really is!
I love Hastings and the Old Town in particular. Perhaps, you might do a video on the many charms of the O.T. Great video, btw.
Sounds like a challenge I can’t turn down - watch this space I’m going to do this 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for mentioning Debenhams. I used to work on the swichboard at Head Office in Welbeck Street London! Sadly missed.😪
My sister just came back from Hastings a week ago and I was therefor two weeks twenty years ago. Thank you for the memories.
You're welcome Marie! Our pleasure!
I spent most of my childhood summer holidays in Hastings and St Leonards as my grandparents lived there...many a happy hour on the beach....the fun fair looks a lot smaller than in the 70s and 80s...and I didn't see the crazy golf, which would be roughly where the ferris wheel is now...the underground area just past the pier used to be a swimming pool, then ice rink.
I haven't been back for about 25 years, was very run down and shabby looking then, good to see the place has had some money spent on it now.
Thanks for memories!
I really enjoyed watching the video, we were in Hasting from June 12th to 15th this year, It was nice to see it all back,
Thank you for watching my channel Jack! 👍👍
lovely and superb music just adds to it.xx
The locked door down the stairs is where the old underground ice rink was :)
Ahhh!! I did wonder!!
They were built as the white rock baths had my first swimming lessons there when we had school visits.
It is huge under there.
The other two were public toilets.
Looking very nice indeed. Great capture as always 👍
Many thanks!
What a lovely place, and so much space along
The sea front. No wonder the people in London
Like to get there.
Very nice place.
Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Beryl - have a lovely weekend!
Thank you 😊 I’ve just booked a three night stay in August so this was very helpful and great to watch 👌🏻👍🏻 xx
You’re welcome 😊 You'll have a great time!
Thank you for this very informative video, my wife and I are going to Hastings again for our annual holiday, we are both pensioner’s.
The structure sticking out of the sand could represent one end of a Viking ship. 🌞😎
Thanks Don - I wish you and your wife a happy trip and a lovely time!
I've never been to this place, but it looks very clean and tidy. The seafront looks really gorgeous. I would have thoughts of paying a visit to this resort, the way that you've presented this very nice video. Many thanks.
Changed a lot since I last was. There in the late 90s beautiful beach and all looks very lovely 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍😍😍😍😍😍
It really is!

Thank you Brian!
Hope you are safe and well 👍
Used to holiday in Hastings every weekend and major holiday back in the 80'2 and early 90's, Hastings was way better then. hate the look of it now.
often loved to walk from St Leonards on sea down into hastings then back and over the cliff to Bexhill and back. hate the look of bexhill too going by that video - glad I have not been there in over 20 years.
Lovely walk. I like sunny days and walking. I really enjoy your commentary throughout. Found out things I never knew and I’ve been to Hastings a few times 👍👍
Thank you Sherrie! Lovely place hastings!
Always liked Hastings. To me, it's like the seaside equivalent to Bromley.
Hastings, back to a place we’ve visited.
A trip around the West Country on honeymoon and three years visiting Austria then our first born arrived and two years later the shock of twins.
This led to flats in Filey and Lytham St Annes but in 1987 when the three lads had got a bit older we ventured Darn Sarf, to stay in hotels, a couple of years in Cliftonville, Margate then Bournemouth, Eastbourne and Paignton in following years.
In 1988 we visited Battle, and then on to Hastings, we parked near the tall black buildings and went up the cliff lift before walking to the pier, by this time it was dark, and we watched the rather underwhelming display of the Armada being defeated.
As in most of you wonderful walks much has changed over the last forty odd years, the black net buildings were actually on the shingle beach then.
Sorry for the life story, again, but your walks have the habit of stirring long lost memories.
Never apologise Mike - quite honestly your memories are the exact reason I want to visit and film these places!
I'm jealous of you visiting Austria too - I'd love to do that!
@@GimbalWalkTV
Austria was great but was surpassed on visits to Norway for our Silver Wedding with a trip on the Norway in a Nutshell tour and a Fjord cruise a few years later, scenery so stunning it brought tears to your eyes.
I have Scandie ancestors in my tree so it was almost like coming home.
Ready to go❤
You have a good sense of humour! What I remember about the De Luxe cinema,is when they changed from cinema to bingo hall my old mate would rush over to see what film they were showing! Oh look Jack Pots staring in Bingo! He never tired of that joke! Needless to say I did!!
ha ha ha ha I bet! Funny though! 🤣
Great video Iv'e not been to Hastings for years my friend James was in the town at the time of the fire on the pair and took some amazing photos..stay safe..V...
Oh I'd love to see those photos sometime Victor!
@@GimbalWalkTV He moved to Lincoln about 6 years ago so i don't no about the photos...
As ex resident of Bexhill, I know Hastings/St Leonards equally well and it was interesting to see a few changes since I left, plus you mentioned some facts I didn't know! The best fish and chips I think, are to be found at Rock a Nore, plus there is a great pie and mash shop/restaurant there, which comes highly recommended. I remember the pier fire in 2010 very well, started by a couple of naughty local lads who were never prosecuted for it. I haven't checked all your Sussex vids, but two places I'd love to catch up with after many years, are Hove and Rottingdean. I lived in Hove (prior to Bexhill) and loved it. At same time, I worked in estate agents (for 13 years from 1974) in Rottingdean, so daily drove all along the coast road which took about 25 minutes (longer in summer!). Rottingdean has much history, plus very pretty, with a pond in village centre and a green. A pub called The Plough, situated right by pond, where I used to work some evenings. Village has connections with Kipling, Byrne Jones and Black Beauty!
Another great place for a video tour would be Rye. I also lived there for some time, working as receptionist at the well known Mermaid Inn, where the infamous Hawkhurst smugglers gang hung out! It was destroyed by fire but rebuilt some years later. It is said to be haunted and staff were encouraged to promote those stories! Lots of guests would tell me, when checking out, they had seen or felt odd things during the night (oh er!!) There is also a secret staircase from one of the main bedrooms to the bar downstairs. Rye has lots of things to see and do and Camber is also nearby, with its sandy beach. Thank you for doing a great job! 😁
Thank you so much
I’m going to plan Hove and Rottingdean now - thank you so much for the idea!
@@GimbalWalkTV that's brilliant, thanks so much! Oh, and if you are ever in Devon, I lived in Dawlish in the 80s, it's the town with red cliffs, and the trains run all along the coast, beautiful views. They have black swans right in the centre of town, you can see their goslings hatching and taking their first swim! Charming and friendly place, can recommend! 🤗
What a great video thanks so much. What is the background music that is also great, Could you do a walk in Brighton as your videos are often so much better than others on the same town Once again thanks
It’s well over forty years since we were in Hastings
Hope the video brought you back some happy memories Charles! ❤️
loved the video. I would like to see a video of Folkstone, since you said we may have requests. Regarding the thing on the beach you told us to guess, is it some sort of art? For me it looks like a half little boat that have sunk, i do not know, i think.
A great video! Been a while since ventured down to Hastings (infact I remember staying down the road in St Leonards for our honeymoon back in the 80s!) A lovely place. Hastings definitely on our to do/places to go list this year! 👍
Thanks Brian - hopefully it brought back some happy memories
Last 2 suggestions (I promise!) could you do at some point, Margate and/or Whistable? Both really interesting, the former with great sandy beach and arty vibe, and the latter particularly for its famous oyster connection. Thank you! 🤗
Definitely!
Here's Margate 👉 ruclips.net/video/wcob8ITiNqI/видео.html
@@GimbalWalkTV Brilliant, thank you! 😎🤗
It's a café, the funny round building you asked about
Thank you!
Must try it!
@@GimbalWalkTV it's open quiet early as well, which is good. Nice coffee and pastries
Why waist money abroad look what we have on our door step. Let's stay home and build our community back xxxx
Getting all emotional and feeling homesick now
Do you ever get back?
Catherine Cookson must have loved the Sea Side, she was born in that lovely Sea Side Town of " South Shields " ...
Cheers from Australia, my wife is from Hastings and loving it!
Ah perfect! Hope you are safe and well
@@GimbalWalkTV yes thanks although under strict lockdown right now
Yes thanks, under full lock down at present but we trust in the Lord!
Absolutely
Thank you for this video. Hastings has lots to see, I couldn't imagine getting bored. Was the sculpture a Viking boat's skeleton? Love, love, love your videos.
I think it might have been a boat yes!
Hope you are having a lovely day!
Someone should invest in beach tables and chairs a few little food shacks it will take off beautiful place thank you xxx
I live just a few miles outside of Hastings, it is a place to drive through quickly, not to stop at. The French didn't stay very long in 1066, they were wise not to do so.
🤣🤣🤣
You started your journey from St Leonard's on sea and you're waling towards Hastings beach and town centre.
Ah ok - thank you!
How do you know when you’re in one and not the other?
@@GimbalWalkTV The pier marks is the half way point between the two :)
I have been to Hastings a few Times with my wife and the fishermen sell fresh fish and crabs near those big black buildings where they store their nets Best wishes
Ah wish I'd seen that! I'd have definitely bought some!
Yes, I asked a fisherman if he had crabs .
He said ; No.mate ! I always walk this way....( boom, boom ) !
Where should I film next?
Just to let you know some of the stairs going down on the seafront and not all toilet or a understand. Some of them was a night club whick could be renter out as a friend of mine renter one in the 90's they maybe now close down but they was nice
Sorry when I asked for a Brighton walk I meant the seafront with it;s Michelin Star restaurants Volks Railway and pier etc
Looks like a sculpture of a Viking longboat to me.
Yes I think you could be correct!
The metal sculpture on the beach is meant to represent the bow of an old boat, if you can imagine the rest of it buried in the beach
Ah thanks Ken! I did wonder!
It looks like the ribs of a Viking boat. Appropriately, it is near Denmark Place. I guess the Vikings had a bit of R&R, or was it R&P, in Hastings.
You didn't go into Old Town. So much to see there.
I did in my Hastings old town tour video
@@GimbalWalkTV Ah right, I will check it out. thank you.
My favourite place!
You have good taste!
The underground closed bits were toilets male and female hence 2, the cyclist bit it is an underpass to cross the road.
I was born n bred in hastings but have not been back in over a decade.
It is amazing to see how much has changed, the fishing fleet holds the record for land based boats.
Ah thank you Andrew - I did wonder!
What a lovely place it is - can't wait to go back!
The disused steps down by Palace Chambers are the former entrance to a Ladies'
Please come to battle east Sussex
Nice walk..I can just envision 1000's of Normans walking up that beach being met by 1000's of battle weary Anglo Saxons.
Yeah imagine just what a sight that was!
My aunty actually bought a beachut there and they are gonna renovate it but they're busy MOVING house
We had a holiday there a few years ago. Never saw any of this. 😐
In a good way or a bad way Gwyn?
Where is Caffe Nero from Carlisle Parade?
Souvenir thanks de la part d'un Ancien🦊🐼✨️. Comment oublier
Hastings Otieno Otieno is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"Restored" is not the kindest of words for the Pier.Once the temporary huts and attractions are removed,it's virtually a Plank.Nothing traditional about it anymore.Hastings is an ok place to come for a day out in the summer.Much more than a day and you'd soon get bored.
Crikey
I'm missing my first home. So hoping to retire here
Hastings would be nicer if it had trees along the front. Without trees it looks so barren. So for me, more trees and it would be really nice.
True
Fabulous video thank you.
Would have liked your commentry by voice rather than music but that's just my preference as my eyesight poor😍
The wind ruined the natural sound recording sadly so I had no choice 😢
*Thought it was a sandy beach*
Everything is a matter of opinion of course but i moved here from Oxfordshire for work and i hate the dump
Fair
"That'll teach him for nearly running me over" !! Timing ! [no excuse for ignorant cyclists]
🤣🤣
Definitely a place to visit impressed just watch out for mad cyclists lol
ha ha yes!! mad cyclists!

Hastings was great until the Pakistanis took over
I don't know what that means John
