The 60s is my particular area of interest, and this is an unbelievably well researched video. This is a very respectful, fair and accurate account of the 60s and I'm glad that you managed to capture how ridiculously quickly culture changed in the mid 60s. I kind of wish you spent more time on hair and the popularity of long hair, sideburns and moustaches. I think that was a really huge change and it's still a pretty unusual in the last 100 years that all the big celebrities had long hair, super long sideburns and a beard or moustache. Mad Men captured the feeling very well of the advertising industry and older professionals really being aware of the massive amount of baby boomers and the power they would have over society and the changes they would create in just a couple of years
My college had a copy of every one of their yearbooks at the library. Comparing 1963 to 1973 is absolutely unreal. There is no bigger and quicker change in styles for any other ten year span in American history. In 1963 students still primarily dressed in suits - you'd rarely see anything more casual than chinos and an OCBD. Every man had short hair and was clean shaven. In 1973, almost all students had much longer hair, facial hair was widespread, and you'd be hard pressed to find a single student wearing a suit. Jeans and t-shirts were already the norm.
For the 1970s video, there could be a comedic introduction to the horrors that the video will include. Maybe something like Rafael locking himself in an emergency shelter, or smashing something that says 'break glass in case of menswear catastrophe'
I’m really looking forward to what you have to say here, as we tend to look back at the 60s with rose- (and LSD) tinted glasses. Thank you in advance for making this!
I love Gentlemans Gazette, Great job with this. I think after WW2 most 20 yr olds were not wearing the hat so much anymore but their father's ,who were young in the 1930-1940's continued on. Some till they passed away. My grandfather was like that. I myself love men's dresswear and appreciate this channel very much. Thank's for the upload.
6:14 THANKYOU for making that distinction, Preston. I had friends who were "skinners" and "boot boys" back in the mid 70s and they had little to do with the co-opters of the ensuing decades.
Great series. Would love to see you continue it into the 70s, 80s, 90s all the way to the present. Even if those decades aren't "classic", classic style somehow survived through them, and the full history would help understand the current style landscape.
Pretty good report on Mod. I've been a Mod since the revival of 1979. Your only mistake was the Beatles had nothing to do with Mod. Bands were Small Faces, The Who, the Kinks & Motown. The collegiate look that you touched on also impacted Mod. Bass Weejuns, Harrington jackets, chinos and JFK hairstyles survive today. Cheers. Well done.
I think you missed two important styles: Men's sleepwear/loungewear during this period and beachwear. I loved the cabana sets men used to wear (matching jackets to go with their swim trunks) and even the ones that had matching ones for father and sons.
I loved this look on Preston! I'm taking notes lol Otherwise, this was an amazing video! Happy y'all talked a little about the subcultures as well as the general public.
I've watched quite a number of your videos and continue to watch with interest. If only I'd have had these simple tips when I was growing up - in the late 1970s'.
I was around in the sixties in the Uk and this is a pretty accurate run through... I was a mod...how great to hear about bum freezer jackets and other stuff after all this time... happy days...
Denim was a big thing in the 60s. Denim jeans, denim shirts, denim jackets. If you had to pick the single most worn item by men in the 60s, it was denim.
THATS AMAZING! I just recently found a wonderful suit in a 1940s style but made sometime in the 50s/60s and it has those exact frogged pockets. What a wonderful little detail.
I want to move toward a Mad Men/early James Bond style. Very helpful. A few years ago my former employer had an anniversary party, the company was founded in 1979, and we were requested to come in 70's style clothes. I started early looking for a legit powder blue leisure suit and it took a long time for one that fit to show up on eBay. I consider myself trim but muscular, 34 waist and 42 chest, but almost all the pants were 30 waist or less.
Good guess on the scooter. You can just see it's a Vespa rather than a Lambretta if you look at the front forks and engine. Definitely a mod revival shot from late 70s though :)
I love the Gentleman's Gazette and classic menswear, but I simply adore the 60's for breaking through honestly uptight rules and expectations for clothing in general and letting everyone go wild with their style
Been rewatching your What Men REALLY Wore series recently and I must congratulate you on a really interesting and informative series. It really is fascinating how fashion has changed over the years and it's got me thinking about a potential video series you could.... Would you be interested in doing a series on the outfits from Doctor Who, for the show's 60th Anniversary next year? You could cover the influences of the outfits, which eras they belong to and your general thoughts on them. Just a thought. Anyway hope your enjoying the festive period and I look forward to whatever great content you put out in 2023.
I like chelsea boots. Thanks for showing them! Very interesting to me. I bought a pair of black 063 dress Blundstone boots because they were the closest I could find today to the chelseas of the 60s. I even started wearing high-hemmed straight-legged Carhart pants with them, so far in burgundy or olive. I'm a straight man, but I love Andy Warhol and his Sixties style too. Heck, I might try to find something like Cuban heels. I believe that stuff is going to come back. We've already seen skinny jeans. I could see it happening in more cosmopolitan cities/areas though, LA, New York... I'm in a not so fashion conscious area currently. It can be awkward for me to stand out sometimes, but I'm pretty brave.
3:37 the lad at the front in the light suit is a 15 year old Marc Boland, later to become lead singer in T rex. He was a very famous "face" around the early time of the mods.
7:24 as a monkees fan, it's always michael nesmith that pops in my head whenever someone says "60s hair/facial hair" (and peter tork as well, but mike first and foremost)
Great Video, thank you for the careful research. Many have commented about the upcoming (?) 70s. But in my personal opinion, the 80s were the worst. In fact, my interest in classic men's style began in the 80s when I was a boy and watching old movies I noticed that men like Jimmy Stewart or Humphrey Bogart etc. looked very different than men out in the streets. Well, different and by far better
Love the 60s fashion, I'm obsessed with everything, I want to dress like that but us hard to find clothes, my room is all 60s I'm just missing the tv I have to make one
6:08 Thank you very much for clearing that out. It can't be said often enough that the Skinhead movement was everything but racist in its beginning. That being said, there are still Skins around remembering these origins and who don't take it lightly to be identified with the far right at all. Other than that, thank you for this enriching and insightful video. It's always a pleasure to watch them.
I remember a fire drill in junior high. I was struck by all the colors as the student body gathered on the playground. I had just been reading an article about how austere conditions were in Communist East Berlin. My Beatle Boots were branded as "Watusi" by , I believe, Florsheim. One unforgettable trend was the prints in oversized polka dots, mostly in men's shirts and women's dresses.
If you look at some of the suits The Beatles wore in the early days, you'll actually see that it is more conservative than one would think. For instance, their dress shirts were rather roomy and their trousers were high-waisted. They were probably one of the few people who still wore Winchester shirts.
I was born in 1956 so the 60 's styles really didn't affect me but the 70's we're when I started buying my own clothes but ina also worked at a shoe store while in high school so for me it was dress pants and sport jackets .I still dress more conservative than most people my age
I recall the 1960's very well as well as how the business leaders and politians dressed as ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for this remembrance that was in fashion. Have you done any programs of the 1880's, 1890's and 1900's mens ware that was popular with the gentlemen.
I have an old photo of my dad from the mid 60's rocking a pea coat over a long collared button up shirt over a turtleneck!, I wouldn't have even thought of that, but it's a glimpse into the styles. I went out like that once just for fun and got at least one nice compliment. 60's style was cool, just not the whole hippie thing!
When you wear sweaters over Dress shirts can they be of the same size? I already size up on Jackets so just wondering. Appreciate the insight as always. Nice job on the video!
Excellent video. Very impressed on the segment about the skinhead/hard mod subculture and that the media portrayal of skinheads being nazis stems from political/racist groups co-opting the look. Especially since the skinheads of the late 1960’s originally stemmed out of the love of Jamaican ska/reggae. There is still a decent following of traditional skinheads and mods in the UK and all across the world There are many small independent shops the recreate the various pieces, such as Oxford shirts, Crombies, sta-prest trousers and Harrington Jackets catering to the subculture. It would be an untested ring video topic if you ever need a video idea 👍
My mother was a skinhead or suedehead around 1970-71 in London & I know from her how much they looked up to West Indian immigrant families for their sense of style, as well as their music. Of course she was into early glam rock, Sweet, Slade etc but she loved ska & reggae
Nice outfit Preston, but i would suggest using a knitted tie without the red stripes, at least, for me, it was odd enought and broke the outfit synergy.

I love Gentleman’s Gazette!!!! And I love Preston’s jacket and longer hair!!!!
Me too!
YESSSS❤
Like the new hair style!
I know right! He is very gorgeous with that!
I put so much information into this and I'm so impressed that it fit into just 25 minutes. Preston, as always, did a stellar job!

Would like to see a semi historical video about how the space age affected small details in men's fashion and lives.
As a fan of space stuff, I would very much be interested in that.
Look at ties and cufflinks.
Totally agree! 👌

Noticed that Steve McQueen Bullitt photo in there - watched it for the first time last week, what a film!!
Another excellent Preston Video! These are the best videos on the channel. The right combination of humor and information. Well done.

Preston - this hairstyle looks so good on you! I even prefer it to your 'slicked back' look.
Groovy, but you missed mentioning Desert Boots, they were huge in the 60's.

...I also remember Native American style moccasins being a thing with the "Flower Power" set...
Indeed they were! Our guide to Chukka & Desert Boots is here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/the-chukka-boots-guide/?

Given that the 60s had so many styles and was so wildly different from the beggining to the end, I think this is an excusable detail.

My dad was a college professor who wore a suit ALWAYS. He decided to replace the traditional tie with western bolo. Then came Leisure suits.
Bumfreezers as a suit name has to be the most hilarious nickname I've heard in menswear so far I literally spit out my drink hearing that 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s British humour for you mate!
Looking forward to Preston or Raphael wearing a leisure suit for the 1970s video 😅
Proof positive that being stylish 'a la Cary Grant' is always safely elegant as opposed to being highly 'fashionable' ! Scary !
OK, Gentleman's Gazette - your True 1970s Menswear video is way behind schedule now. :)

The very early 60’s was very cool. Steve McQueen, Route 66, etc. Slim suits, ties and sport coats, Ivy League.
i have been searching desperately for the overcoats from the 50s and 60s, but to no avail.
Oh boy...did this video ever bring back memories.
One of the trends missed in this video was the collar less suite jacket popularized by The Beatles in the early 60s.
Oh I've been waiting for this one!
Ivy or Mod styles would be interesting.
I think the 60s was the most transformative fashion era.
The fact that most modern fashion is derived from it, makes it my favorite decade
