My parents graduated high school in the '50s but on opposite ends of the decade, as Dad graduated in the early 50's (Truman era-still some 40's influence) and Mom in the late 50's (Eisenhower era). You can tell from looking at the yearbook and class photos the evolution of clothing within the decade itself.
I remember my dad wearing very wide-legged trousers. There were even special metal frames that were put in the trouser legs, when not being worn, to keep the fabric taut and preserve the crease. This would have been late 1950's.
I personally like wearing loose fitting clothing, you can move easily and breathe with ease. I do not like tight clothing. Clothes from the 1940's and 1950's were comfortable to wear, well at least for men anyway - I wore some as a child - and young adult. Even though this was decades after they originally were sold, they were still stylish to me anyway.
1950s style offers plenty of inspiration for casual outfits which are still dapper. And one can wear 50s outfits today without looking (too) costumey. I love the menswear of that decade. Unfortunately, my late Grandpa didn't keep his older clothes. But I have his cufflinks from the 50s and 60s.
My grandfather worked in the financial sector his entire adult career. From the late 1940's - mid 1980's. He loved photography as a hobby, and so I've been blessed with the experience of growing up with a stylish grandpa who had proof of his style throughout all the decades he worked. He was so stunning in the 1950's, my favorite era for his fashion. RIP PopPop, I still look up to you.
The substantial amount of polyester being used in the 1950's is surprising for me. I've always assumed mixed cotton/wool blends from those days was on the dominant side.
The Teddy Boy movement actually kickstarted my interest in men's fashion back when I was about 17 - so 10 years ago 😂 Not wearing Creepers anymore but I surely enjoyed it back in the days
I love casual sports shirts of the 50s and 60s! I bought a sewing pattern and cant stop sewing them! Although i did modify them to have a massive spear collars

Unfortunately, classic style is so complex and poorly understood that learning the "basics" in one video is like learning how to speak a language in one video. Here's my advice for you teenagers, having recently been one myself (I'm now 21): - Up to around 17 or so, buy cheaper, and especially used. Outgrowing your suits at least once is a sad necessity. Once you're in your late teens, you can start to buy more permenant suits. - Avoid trends and fashion, but not so much that you lose your individuality. Slimmer suits can help you look thinner. Just avoid the extremes. - Buy suits which can be used as a sport coat and slacks, along with a possible odd waistcoat. - Three-piece suits are more versatile than two-piece. Why? Because, if you sew braces buttons on to them, you have a three-piece suit with braces, a two-piece suit with braces, a two-piece suit with a belt, an odd waistcoat, slacks, and a sport coat. - Always go to the tailor, even if you think it fits! It likely doesn't quite fit. - Learn the ropes of thrifting, both in-person and online. - Avoid the cheap, polyester suits. They're certainly tempting at that price point, but you'll grow to resent them soon enough. Polyester blends aren't quite as bad, assuming the majority of the suit is natural fibers. - If you're tall, get long shirts. It's a struggle! Look for Brooks Brothers, they're a great, long shirt brand. - Buy over-the-calf socks. Just trust me on this. - If you get a hat, know what you're getting. Please do not get a cheap trilby. Get a proper dress hat with a proper brim and good materials. Be sure to switch your hat to straw come summer. As for a good suit to get, here's my advice: A navy, three-piece suit. Good size lapels, not skinny like you see on modern clothes. Peak lapels is acceptable, but a double breasted waistcoat and peak lapels may steer too far into the power suit. Avoid pinstripes, because pinstripe suits must be worn as a full suit. Navy is better than charcoal, in my opinion, because navy makes you look more youthful and sharp, whereas greys make you look older and more conservative (as a person, not politically). If that is the look you want, go for it. Take it to the tailor, and have braces buttons sewn on, along with the regular stuff. You'll need the following other details: - At least two dress shirts, preferably one in white and one in blue. A Winchester shirt is acceptable, but possibly eccentric. - Black dress shoes: derbies, monk straps, or oxfords. Not loafers or patent leather (too casual and formal respectively). - A pair of button braces, preferably matching the suit color, and a black belt. - A tie, preferably colored and with some subtle pattern or texture. - Over-the-calf dress socks, either matching the suit or tie color. - A white pocket square in wool or cotton. After you buy this, consider buying a grey suit. You can mix and match the grey and navy to create various combinations. You can also wear a navy blazer with the grey slacks. I hope this helps.

@luke5100 for example a lot of the loud designs of the era don’t tend to be my favorite but the best interpreters of the style i am trying to describe would be Husbands Paris which is one of my favorite underground designer brands.
Classic stuff..my maternal great grandpa was known for wearing a suit and hat (usually a fedora..not a trilby but an actual fedora) pretty much every time he left the house. I am curious though as to how one kept their ears warm while wearing such a hat back then. I could never ask him that because he passed away when I was young iirc..might have to ask my aunt, his second daughter. She was born in the 1950's as her sister was born in 1948 and she was born some years later..so my family collectively has seen quite a few decades of dress from both men and women. In fact the older I get..despite being very southern (so was my great grandpa), and a tad overweight..I feel the urge to dress like him at least once..with a nice suit and the like. Something about that 1950's look appeals to me..might have something to do with all the cartoon reruns I grew up with having that kind of look often and don't even get me started on Batman the Animated series which made Gotham City look very much like something from a classic Noir film as far as the average person on the street..same for Tim Burton's Batman movie which I also watched growing up.
I would love to see the history and modern use (Kingsman) of the Siren Suit. Winston Churchill was donning this in WW2. Please make a video about this!

Desi Arnaz wore Sport coats in the old I Love Lucy episodes that were buttoned very low almost at the waist to reveal more of the shirt with open neck he wore with them the collar turned out over the jacket.

Two piece dark suit, notch lapels, white, barrel cuff, plain shirt, plain belt (if any), plain shoes, and that's about it. This whole minimalism thing needs to die with fire as soon as possible.

Coming from a south american man ( Brazilian from the south, the region where the 'gauchos' are from ) your pronunciation was on point! Obs: Gaúcho is the name we use to refer to the people from that region, which got associated with their characteristic style to this day.
One of the problems with trying to find and wear men's vintage clothing is that men now are generally much bigger than they were back then. I have some of my father's really cool shirts from the 50s and they just do not fit me and I am not a big guy at all. I have a good female friend who wears vintage clothing all the time and she has no problem finding things from back then that will fit her.

One of the problems with trying to find and wear men's vintage clothing is that men now are generally much bigger than they were back then. I have some of my father's really cool shirts from the 50s and they just do not fit me and I am not a big guy at all. I have a good female friend who wears vintage clothing all the time and she has no problem finding things from back then that will fit her.
