Nice. It reminds me of the past when men really care about their attire. Their esteem was definitely noted. They looked attractive even more than now. Even when there's no money in their wallet, then men looked dashing and darling in their attire😍👍. 🙏📖😇
I really have to say that in case of trousers i would always say:"Try colours!" Try to buy trousers wich are not only blue or black or grey. Go for patterns go for brighter colors and make the trousers the eyecatcher of your outfit of the day.
Funny, as started watching this Swedish tv talked about some treasure trove of vintage, never worn, clothes from some store or warehouse. Loads of clothes from the 40’s - 70’s. They are now being sold in Stockholm. I would have loved to go there and get some 40’s - 50’s suits, shirts and coats.
I have my own confirmation bias but I definitely subscribe to these ideals of spending more but buying less to get more value per wear. Furthermore, I had never thought that I would enjoy wearing braces/suspenders but they are far more elegant and comfortable; plus I never have to worry about my shirt untucking or constantly pulling up my pants.
The more I see how poorly men dress today, the more it motivates me to dress a little nicer in public. This channel has helped me to refine my own style. I always wear a hat with my outfits too.
I bought 2 pairs of Florshiem Royal Imperial black lace up Derby's 10 years ago for daily workwear, first pair was $400.00 AUS but they went on sale a few weeks later so I returned that pair and bought 2 pairs for $200.00 AUS each. Had a toppy put on day one, worn in rotation every day since and still like new, took some breaking but well worth it. Have not bought another pair of black work/dress shoes (I am a suit guy) since. Pay once, cry once.
I enjoy these videos. The recommendations and comparisons to the past are interesting. I keep thinking we should understand what we are doing and where we are currently going. That has a great deal to do with comparisons to the past. Movie stars recreation, dining and entertaining is different than my life and where I go.
Any consideration to doing an episode of "Is it Worth it?" focusing on the iconic aluminum luggage line made by Rimowa? I'm a big fan of the art-deco derived design, but I'm less knowledgeable on whether or not its worth the additional cost to purchase a Rimowa versus the lesser priced lines that appear to be just about equal in design and quality? Thoughts on this?
Overcoats still look good on most men today. I grew up in Chicago and besides its Navy heritage, peacoats were very common. Overcoats have supplanted them today, but the cold weather states still have a slight degree of elegance simply because a lot of office workers still choose classic style overcoats over down and quilted jackets. Not to say you still won't see hundreds of people a day in those jackets, but your eye is drawn to those who chose an overcoat for the day. I'll be moving back to Chicago at the end of summer, and I am looking forward to using my own overcoats again.
@@BlueJayWaters it's funny when people comment about my peacoat when I'm wearing it and I'm like "join the navy and you can get one lol". I never wore it while in the navy because I wore cammies, so I waited until after I retired.
@@fmfdocbotl4358 I think I wore it once going to my Marine command in my NSU's (was also a Doc). But other than that, I also wore mine more after getting out. Shame they're not issued anymore. New sailors won't know what it's like to be issued a piece of history that's tailored to them.
Living in the Chicago suburbs, a variety of coats is necessary. I got a double breasted polo coat in camel color, made in Italy. It was virtually brand new at Goodwill I purchased a navy RL peacoat this year from Macey's. And, I got an A2 Bomber jacket from Cockpit this year. Of course, being a senior now, I have owned camel hair polo coats, leather bomber jackets, safari jackets before these recent purchases. Two Burberry trenchcoats are also in my closets.
I've been collecting vintage watches for a few years and I've always been impressed by the quality of each piece. They're meant to last basically forever(ofc with regular services), and their small sizes fit my tiny wrist so nicely. We rarely see 32~34mm watches being sold for men but back then it was the norm, which I think is just fantastic.
My tip for shoes: Check the used market. I have bought so many of my shoes used, because some people sell their shoes after only a handful of wears because it's only then that they notice they do not fit them. I got a 400$ pair for 50$ that has only been worn once because the guy took the new shoes to the cobbler, had a rubber sole protector glued on, then noticed the pair was too small, but he could not return it anymore for obvious reasons. It is my favorite pair right now. Another pair I got was completely neglected, sold for 30$ (300 new) and was looking like new after one hour of shoecare.
The #1 thing I enjoyed about cruising was the dress code for dinner in the main dining room. I remember a guy showing up in his ‘dress’ t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. He was denied entry much to his chagrin and walked away cursing the front of the house people. His wife and small children were so embarrassed they refused to walk away with him.
Thanks for this helpful video! I am in both Model A Ford national clubs 1928-31 that have era fashion divisions and judging and I get lost fast trying to put something together correctly.
My favourite pair of pyjamas are a lovely traditional cut set from M&S that are blue with a koi design pattern and navy piping on the collar, they just make me happy when I wear them. What I like to do with my watches is change out the straps for different occasions, a NATO strap is very practical when I'm hiking or doing any watersports, while a leather strap makes a watch look dressier. I own a few vintage watches that only one of them came with the original strap, so I took the opportunity to buy some really nice alligator, lizard skin, and rayskin straps for them so they can look great with my outfit.
That is all very true, but the main problem is a marked lack of posture and deportment. That is why most do not look good even if they are dressed up (women as well as men).
I'm butch so I find that a masculine style really suits who I am. I first want to extend a big thank you to the Gentleman's Gazette - although this channel may at first seem to be the most vintage fashion focused of them all, it's actually among the most timeless men's fashion channels on RUclips, unlike all those cookie-cutter men's channels telling men that they HAVE to dress a certain, trendy fitting way (looking at you, tight-fitting suits) and that they have to have a certain body type to even be attractive. I really appreciate the emphasis put on creating your own personal style, using the rules of classic fashion as guardrails and a means to create good looks more consistently while working with your body's features, not against them. This is helping me immensely in seeing more formal fashion as a way of expressing myself at occasions where I want to shine instead of something constricting. Today, I was at a celebration honoring this year's statewide best graduates from apprenticeships, and I'm super happy that I get to attend the national one as well as I placed best in my entire country. While previously, such occasions would taunt me months in advance because the fashion side of things was so overwhelming, I now have a really basic formal wardrobe and today, I really enjoyed dressing up for the occasion and I felt really confident, all thanks to your advice. It was sad to see how many of the guys there did not know how to dress properly, with linen shirts with button down collars paired with a suit, pants so long they were really bunching up at the bottom and buttoned lower buttons on suits.
I bought my first suit after I watched your video on how to measure. I ended up getting a great brooks brothers charcoal color suit. Fit okay but I kinda knew already, I got it tailored and now it looks great.
@@Acemans Oh, I see. Congratulations on your purchase! I was just wondering as I got my first suit at the age of 7 or so. So I obviously didn't buy it myself. 😁 Enjoy your suit! 👍
The other thing that added to the classic good looks was the fact that they had their clothing washed and pressed (yes, folks, I mean with an iron). I hate to admit how casually I've been dressing and your videos have inspired me to dress up more often and to take better care of my clothing. Keep up the good work!
Bruh you ain't lying. During rona I been wearing cargo shorts, t-shirts and usually sandals or tennis shoes because I been doing work around the casa. A few weeks ago our Vet group met up and everyone was like "dapper Doc is back" because I was rocking some linen pants, a Guayabera and a Kangol.
@@fmfdocbotl4358 HA! See? THAT'S the smooth kind of nickname I'm hoping to earn one day right there, my brother. Well Mr. "Dapper Doc" it looks like styling season is back for both of us 👌🏾
Same. I moved during covid and sold all of my menswear except for my lone custom Isaia sportcoat (which I didn’t have the heart to give away) and wore my black on black techwear for the last two years. Now that business and my clients are returning I have a lot more excuses to dress well.
I purchased some pre-owned chocolate brown Allen Edmond's cap toes from Ebay and an array of colored, warmish colored shoe strings from Fort Belvedere. I'm having the shoes resoled. I want a pair of shoes that look like the pair shown at 7:05 of this video. I love that chocolate brown shoe with the warm pop of color in the shoe laces. Thanks, Raphael. Cheers.
once I wore a pair of 400$ shoes... I never went back. It's also increasingly hard to find natural fibre socks. I do not want nylon on my feet. And I agree on the coats. I have a cashmere blend overcoat and its far nicer than a big puffer, which I hate. I had an old Harris tweed overcoat that I wore out completely but it lasted 15 years for me and lord knows how long for its previous owner. It went with literally everything. My watches are also on the smaller size because I don't want some monstrosity getting caught on my sleeve.
I'm curious about one thing, when I was younger I noticed at the PX yes I'm a military kid, they introduced an evening uniform and I was wondering how was that stylish. My dad was retired by then I thought I would ask the stylish gentleman here. I think it was the 80's when I seen it.
I’m a military guy who retired two years ago. Last week was the first I forgot to wear a belt, I felt totally nekkid. It’s a thing. When you are supposed to be the “decider of things” you have to command the room.
I went in to men’s warehouse in search for a classic fit suit for prom and the employees were shocked that I even mentioned classic fit. The vintage and straight fit look is my favorite look and nobody at my school will expect it haha.
I will never understand why a lot of men as of late prefer T shirts, blue jeans, and athletic shoes to go out in public (Dinner, movies, etc). I enjoy your videos Gentlemen, please keep up the good work. Respectfully submitted, Mr. C
I think one thing that factors in is that these days, people (Americans anyway) are just getting fatter and fatter. So much of the vintage style comes from a not so long ago era when men, statistically speaking, were thinner, even less muscular. While there are definitely options for us larger guys (well, I'm now formerly larger, yay) people seem to be dressing solely for comfort's sake.
I'm low middle class or working class in England, minimum wage etc, the more I see the downfall of man and society, the more I look to the past (as we all do) and I have found using less technology, driving an older luxury car and dressing this way does make everything feel so much more refined in a time of darkness
High rise pants are so comfortable! When I was a kid my mom was pretty confused about why I always pulled my jeans up as high as I could, I just didnt find it comfortable to have them on my hips. As an adult I tend to wear pants on my hips cuz I usually have to buy them a little too big, but I really should take the advice of finding a tailor. I dont care if I paid $3 or $300, I want my clothes to last and look nice!
im a middle age british man, i enjoy your videos. i dress classic half the time and yes i change my watches to colour match and style depending on outfit. We are known for our flat caps and old style still. keep up the good work, cheers.
Would it possible to do an episode of what men wore to work? I don't mean business, but more of the laborers. I have seen pictures of what looked like mechanics that would wear what seemed like dress shirts, ties and hats. Unless I am completely mistaken, but I find that very intriguing and wonder if the material was different than regular business attire back in the early 20th century. Thanks!
I totally agree with everything on this list. Where can one buy a decent pair of pants that use suspenders instead of a belt? Most of what I found was on a site that does more late 1800s (steampunk) style) which is nice, but not for everyday wear. I am a steampunk, but I don't wear it every day and those pants aren't as (if I may use the word) dapper as I would like it to be. Thank you.
Another great GG video. A couple of things, if you don’t mind. Could you please do a video entitled “ William Powell: Gentleman of Style “, or “How to dress like William Powell”? Can a gentleman still look stylish if they have to wear orthopedic shoes? Many men back then looked better, because they often wore vests as part of their wardrobe. Thanks for all that you folks do. Very much appreciated.
My grandfather was always fresher than a Florida orange and slicker than oil. Pristine purple clean he was mistaken for royalty. Hope you like my rap lyrics I made by accident.
The greatest paradox to me is that while clothing, even quality clothing, is becoming cheaper men just dress worse and worse. I'm a student so I can't afford much anyway but I see no reason why I wouldn't invest in quality clothes as soon as I get a better income
I quit throwing my shoes away and going to get them repaired. I noticed something at the local thrift store, about the same socks they had the same brand at different prices yes they did one was 4.95 and the other was 6.95 and the same number of socks, I don't have much money when I go out.
Hi I’m hoping you get back to me because I have a wedding in June that I need to dress for. I was wondering if it would be wise(because I’m on a very very tight budget and can’t afford everything all at once) to sort of build a suit so to speak. With one psycheck buy the trousers, with a different paycheck buy a wastecoat, another paycheck but a jacket and so on and so forth, and getting them tailored as you purchase and go along?
@gentlemansgazette : at 11:07 (in the background)- Is it possible these days to wear the original knickerbockers (as shown in the video at 11:07) without "being looked at", in the village and in the city and outside of golf or other sporting activities? - - Maybe there will be a separate video for this?
Quality was cheaper back then because it was the norm 160 bucks per month and spending 10 on good quality shoes is still better than getting 1000 euros per month and spending 300 euros on a good quality shoe
I've been curious about the suits people wore while doing outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, etc. I have seen artwork of Englishman wearing sports coats and boots.
I agree with all points except the shoes. I don't about the US but in Sweden young people take great care of their shoes, and because they have multiple pairs usually, they won't easily be thrashed. That said there is a lot of quality over quantity, the reason being that sneaker collection is big here. But I mean if you take care of your Jordan's and Yeezy's they'll stay in great shape - most sneaker collectors have shoe trees
So vintage men wore better pants, shirts, suits, ties, jackets, socks, shoes, pajamas, hats, overcoats, and watches. I guess modern men have gained the edge in underwear though.
I have no hips so I always have my suits and paints (other then jeans and chinois) made to wear braces (suspenders) so my paints hang better. I wish you would do a video on braces.
I'm still looking for a pair of dress shoes or boots, that are comfortable enough to walk in for a couple of hours (and are within budget) any suggestions?
Dress shoes require a certain break in period. Some may also be comfortable right away but most are stiff at the beginning. If you choose a shoe that fits your foot and you wear it often it will feel comfortable. I wear a pair of dress shoes every day that was so stiff that it literally opened up the skin at my heel when I wore it too long. The solution was to use band aids so it didn't injure me and wearing them anyways. Now the leather is so soft that they feel extremely comfortable. Also make sure that the shoe isn't made in a glued construction because those won't last long. As for brand recommendations: watch the video for the best dress shoes under 300$ by the gentleman's gazette. It's very informative
Could you guys do a video on how to start building your wardrobe? What to buy first on a budget, brands that are long lasting, et c.

Your best video recently. Extremely well done!
The more I see how poorly men dress today, the more it motivates me to dress a little nicer in public. This channel has helped me to refine my own style. I always wear a hat with my outfits too.
Another super lesson which covered alot, thank you, enjoyed this
I bought 2 pairs of Florshiem Royal Imperial black lace up Derby's 10 years ago for daily workwear, first pair was $400.00 AUS but they went on sale a few weeks later so I returned that pair and bought 2 pairs for $200.00 AUS each. Had a toppy put on day one, worn in rotation every day since and still like new, took some breaking but well worth it. Have not bought another pair of black work/dress shoes (I am a suit guy) since. Pay once, cry once.
Good video. You covered the clear differences without denigrating today's lack of style. (Well, not too much.)
That blazer is very Spike Jones! I love his style.
I'm totally addicted to this channel. Even my wife enjoys watching and often comments on what she'd like to see me in.
I enjoy these videos. The recommendations and comparisons to the past are interesting. I keep thinking we should understand what we are doing and where we are currently going. That has a great deal to do with comparisons to the past. Movie stars recreation, dining and entertaining is different than my life and where I go.
Your clothing at the end is superbly curated.
I've had my peacoat for 32 yrs now, I got it issued in bootcamp and it still fits
@@fmfdocbotl4358 Same. Got it in 2015 though. It's my go to below 15 degrees, which is fairly average temps come Nov in IL
I'm always on the lookout for a good pair of spectator shoes.
I work for Moores which is in the same company as mens wearhouse so seeing my work in a video was a very nice surprise
In japan you can get dress socks relatively cheap, i guess becuase everyone still wrars a suit. Theyre great and last years
The #1 thing I enjoyed about cruising was the dress code for dinner in the main dining room. I remember a guy showing up in his ‘dress’ t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. He was denied entry much to his chagrin and walked away cursing the front of the house people. His wife and small children were so embarrassed they refused to walk away with him.
Great video. This one’s a saver as there is a lot of information and links that are well worth following up on. Thank you
Thanks for this helpful video!
I too enjoy varied combinations of odd pants and sports jackets and routinely attire myself thusly.
The music 🎶 break was absolutely perfect!
That is all very true, but the main problem is a marked lack of posture and deportment. That is why most do not look good even if they are dressed up (women as well as men).
Even super heroes dress! Like the Green Hornet (1931), Sandman (1941)! Thanks to guys like you, keep up the Tradition!
You bought your first suit yourself? How old were you then?
@@tubekulose 21 years old. I bought it used online after measurements. I ended up getting it tailored, but it fits pretty well now.
@@Acemans Oh, I see. Congratulations on your purchase! I was just wondering as I got my first suit at the age of 7 or so. So I obviously didn't buy it myself. 😁 Enjoy your suit! 👍
26:28 - "These suspenders are a bit whimsical and feature dogs" - magnificent
Haha, so true. I told my mother about my new pair of Santoni Oxfords only the day before yesterday. 😄
The other thing that added to the classic good looks was the fact that they had their clothing washed and pressed (yes, folks, I mean with an iron). I hate to admit how casually I've been dressing and your videos have inspired me to dress up more often and to take better care of my clothing. Keep up the good work!
Now that the lock downs are eased up in my area it's time to brush back up on these GG videos and get to styling 👌🏾
Well Mr. "Dapper Doc" it looks like styling season is back for both of us 👌🏾
@@xcaluhbration that's the nice nickname they have for me lol. I'm retired but I like to dress sharp at times.
Same. I moved during covid and sold all of my menswear except for my lone custom Isaia sportcoat (which I didn’t have the heart to give away) and wore my black on black techwear for the last two years. Now that business and my clients are returning I have a lot more excuses to dress well.
Could you do a video on what to wear for the gym and look like a grownup man?
I noticed the majority of the classic pictures you present, show german writings "Neue Sportliche Stoffe", so interesting.
I too hate those polyester trash bags called puffers.
Wow I want a pair of high waisted trousers now.
Respectfully submitted,
Mr. C
Especially since the women they accompany like to dress up and it ends up being such a juxtaposition when she is dressed up and her date isn't.
Tolles Video, vielen Dank dafür! Könntet ihr mal ein Video über Kleidung zur Zeit es Barocks (1600-1700) machen?
Ja, vielleicht.
I'm low middle class or working class in England, minimum wage etc, the more I see the downfall of man and society, the more I look to
the past (as we all do) and I have found using less technology, driving an older luxury car and dressing this way does make everything feel so much more refined in a time of darkness
Thanks!
I always enjoy your videos. Thank You!
A friend asked me if she was under dressed recently. I had to explain to her that it is impossible to under dress these days.
I would suggest that as long as your orthopedic shoes are wellpolished it shouldn't be too much of an impediment.
Haven’t seen high rise pants in years, where do they still sell them of the rack?
My grandfather was always fresher than a Florida orange and slicker than oil. Pristine purple clean he was mistaken for royalty.
Hope you like my rap lyrics I made by accident.
The greatest paradox to me is that while clothing, even quality clothing, is becoming cheaper men just dress worse and worse. I'm a student so I can't afford much anyway but I see no reason why I wouldn't invest in quality clothes as soon as I get a better income
In short, they wore EVERYTHING BETTER than so called modern man who does not even care for his toe nails, let alone shoes and clothe's drape.
We’re not the men you’re limited to..
Great video! Could you do a video on the first socks you should buy?
As it happens, we're working on putting one together! Stay tuned!
A pressed saussage -> Presswurst
I haven't heard this word for a long time and you created the english version 🤣
11:20 "They always make me look like a pressed sausage" "But not bad, ma'am" (Loriot)
I quit throwing my shoes away and going to get them repaired. I noticed something at the local thrift store, about the same socks they had the same brand at different prices yes they did one was 4.95 and the other was 6.95 and the same number of socks, I don't have much money when I go out.
Stunning jacket. I would love to know who made it. What a gem!
In the hat section you flashed a hat colour match to fabric chart. do you have this full chart available ?
"You look like a gangster " lol
It was funny
My guy is a sharp dresser, not quite like this though. His crew are into looking good too. So I am sharing to send their way
@gentlemansgazette : at 11:07 (in the background)- Is it possible these days to wear the original knickerbockers (as shown in the video at 11:07) without "being looked at", in the village and in the city and outside of golf or other sporting activities? - - Maybe there will be a separate video for this?
It would be wonderful if you guys could do a video by taking a trip to Heime’s (sp?) in St. Paul!
Quality was cheaper back then because it was the norm
160 bucks per month and spending 10 on good quality shoes is still better than getting 1000 euros per month and spending 300 euros on a good quality shoe
I've been curious about the suits people wore while doing outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, etc. I have seen artwork of Englishman wearing sports coats and boots.
Look up the "English country gentleman" style
@@Redneck_Wizard thanks :)
$70 handkerchiefs on their website... dream on.
Well done 😎
Yep!
Ha 😄 🤣 😂 😆 😄
There was a time not so distant people took pride in their appearance, not so much today sadly.
I have no hips so I always have my suits and paints (other then jeans and chinois) made to wear braces (suspenders) so my paints hang better. I wish you would do a video on braces.
Nowadays Even the tailors don’t know how to stitch high waist trousers
Hello, would you mind answering what is the red sleeping robe in this video? Is it available for order?
I got a off White spot coat from a vintage store
I like the shoes in the Foto of the video where can i find those??
TAC Pants are good for Weapons training or The Range, but no way would you see me wearing these on a casual outing.
You know what men wore better in the days of yore? Their own bodies.
They were generally very fit and athletic and rarely obese.
