Here in Canada, we get these 'polar vortices' all the time... it just happened to move a little more south this time

Yep my last Chicago winter before moving to Phoenix in 2014 had a polar vortex. Many of my coworkers didn't show up to work for a couple days because they couldn't start their car.

I’m in Michigan and I work in a steel mill. Our buildings aren’t insulated, they’re just big pieces of sheet metal bolted together, and we lost heat to the plant I work at. This was during the worst days of the polar vortex. We lost our boiler houses which produce steam and heat to the plant and to the blast furnaces that make iron. Everything started to freeze, pipes and what not. Then when it started to thaw out pipes were breaking everywhere. Some of my superiors (our bosses aren’t union hourly workers) had to stay and work 24 and even 30 hour shifts straight to fix the damage done. This polar vortex was devastating. Imagine working in -15 weather all day long. The only plus side is the wind chill can’t penetrate through the walls. It just makes everything really cold.

Our schools still on, our cars are running though it may be the reason we're not so cheerful. It is -40celcium right now and it is not a catastrophic :) you will survive, just dress well. Cheers!
