  • Have you ever had the frustrating experience of hearing a musical idea you want to work with as a player or as a composer but have struggled with being able to write it down? This lesson is an exercise in hearing a two part passage and being able to notate it. The video explains how to go about the task and how to sharpen your aural ability. The approach will liberate musicians wanting to notate ideas and will also make sight reading skills more assured.

Yet another wonderful way of explaining a musical skill logically, encouragingly and most clearly. So very much appreciated! Thank you Gareth!

Great exercise! I surprised myself by nailing the upper part on the first try. But I struggled with the bass part. I got the right contour and duration, but the wrong intervals. Thanks for the workout!

I like to transcribe my favourite songs and the vocal harmonies are always the parts I get stuck on! Usually I just guess intervals until I get something that sounds right. If this helps I’ll be eternally in your debt haha

There is a resemblance to Subject 1, Mvt. 1 of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique symphony.
