  • AUTO FANATICA | Honda Civic MK 9 | REVIEW 2019 | (2013) | 5 Door Hatchback | sadly nothing special
The Honda Civic, A mainstay in the UK market and other countries. They used to be know as world leaders of quality and innovation. Why does this car feel like it's lacking something? Like Honda have lost their sense of self? All Japanese manufacturers seem to be going through this identity crisis but the MK8 civic onwards exemplifies this.
After the embarrassment of the "you don't need a rear wiper with this window design" failure to, "It'll look really cool if we hide the door handle in the door surround" Honda seemed to be trying to look like they were innovating, when in fact, no major forward steps were being taken. The unique things about the MK8 design all seemed poorly thought out and ultimately not fit for purpose. Then at the fact that the MK8 and MK9 basically amount to a bunch of minor face lifts and slight improvements.
This Civic feels stale and not quite as good as it should be. It's not a bad car, that would be unfair to say, it's just not exciting, innovative, well designed or special............. it's just average. I didn't feel this way about Hondas I've previously owned. Even my mostly Dull MK6 did not leave me feeling quite this level of uncaring meh..........
Pros: good viewing position for drivers, smooth ride, low cabin noise
Cons: Poor interior design in some places, lack of equipment, needlessly calaustrophobic interior, not exactly the prettiest Honda ever made

I own this shaped car 2.2 version but the es spec. I think this version might be the SE? That's beyond basic. As for the shape itself, , yes it's not the most pretty car but it's superb practically and for its reliability. The Es and models above have good specs for the age, suits me perfect with bluetooth, reversing camera, cruise control etc. I would recommend to anyone.

You appear to be testing the SE grade mk9...ive been driving the top spec EX GT model for 6 years now and its pure luxury..great car to drive and typically honda reliability...love it. Would not change it...

I’m not surprised about the verdict if you are testing very basic, prior facelift model. I would never buy one like this and I don’t know anybody who would, unless there are some fans of plastic steering wheels...where did you get that trim version from?

Youre not keen on the civic ... What do you prefer for the same money ..?.

At the time when I made this review? Well to keep it simple. At the time, you could have had the old model in Type R spec with decent mileage (not amazingly low) for about the same money. If you went back another generation, you could have probably bought 2!
There are a host of good models that could be imported from Japan to the U.K for less money too. All with better spec and quality for around the same price. Usually these are a bit older but the condition is usually far better and lower mileage than U.K cars of the same year.
